I am also a vista home premium user and i use WIZARD.
All i cant do is upgrading Wizard in vista by any PROVEN METHOD.
And there are many like me.
So, i am using VMware workstation to upgrade my wizard and hermes mobile. I have done it many times without any problem.
VMware is a software to create virtual machines in it like Windows XP....
All you need is VMware and winXP cd.
link for VMware full version is:
warez link removed -- Try the free VMWare server version instead: http://www.vmware.com/download/server/ (register with VMWare for serial #)
first download it and install xp in it.It will not take any big space in your pc and you will also not need any partition or formatting.
After downloading it open it and select new virtual machine and install XP in normal way as we install on PC.
After installing install active sync 4.5 link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/activesync/activesync45.mspx
Now in vista go to WMDC and disable usb connection.(it is not required)
goto VMware(remember that your curser is in vmware) and connect your wizard................and upgrade normally as you do it in XP.....
And ~~ENJOY~~
Any query is invited........thank you..........

I've updated the OP's post with a free version available from VMWare directly. If you have any questions as to why this was changed, please see the forum rules.
I had many difficulties to install windows 7 to my shift, maybe because of my USB stick. And then every guide was a little bit complicated - too many instructions, too many steps, too easy to make a mistake and then go back to the beginning..
Didn't want to buy an external dvd-drive either..
Anyway, all this before I found this article.
Check this out
Installing Windows 7 without using a DVD or USB via direct method - No USB stick required. No USB drive required
In this method we install Windows 7 on a clean partition like the normal DVD boot method. Only change is we don’t use a DVD drive in this guide. Please follow the below instructions carefully and don’t skip any steps to make things quickly!
1. Download the Windows 7 ISO files from Microsoft. I hope you have already downloaded one.
2. Download and install Virtual Clone Drive from http://www.slysoft.com/en/download.html
3. Firstly, go to the directory where you have saved Windows 7 ISO file. Right-click on the ISO file, select Open with and then select “Mount files with Virtual Clone Drive” to mount your ISO file.
4. Go back to My Computer (or Just Computer) and then double-click on the Virtual Clone Drive icon to start Windows 7 installation process.
Yes, you are installing Windows 7 without a DVD or USB drive!
5. Next, follow the normal Windows 7 installation procedure to finish the installation. Windows may restart during the install process. Worry not, everything will go fine.

There already are some from microsoft availabale via the link in the personalize menu. Have you already downloaded those ?
Unfortunately those are aero themes, I'd like some NON-aero, to fit with both resolutions.
ok, now the short way to make a bootable USB Disk to install Vista/7
cmd
diskpart
list disk
select disk $ [where $ is the number of the USB Disk listed in the list disk command]
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=ntfs quick label="InstallUSB"
assign
exit
exit
Copy the content of your Installation Disk on USB and boot from it, just simple as that
do this method install the new windwos over the existing windows, or on a new partition in HDD.
As far as I know, no version of windows allows installing of a new windows except from booting.

I just tried it out and it installs it over the existing running windows, doesn´t matter if it was downgraded to xp, or already upgraded to 7, it will install a new and fresh copy of Win 7 in your local drive, regardless of the existing vista recovery partion, which can be used in any time... (I hope to get ride of it once Win 7 final version comes out...)
When the installation is complete, a folder called "old windows" saves all the files from the preivous running operating system, bt since it´s over 10 GB, I suggest you erase it..
Win 7 is fantastic!! I have my shift now running both Internet Explorer 8 and Opera, Office Pro 2007, Skype, Live Messenger, Eset Smart Security 4, Adobe Reader, and more.... as smooth as butter
Great..............Shift on W7.
Please someone could tell me if the differences are big using W7 instead Vista.
So, it's a great solution to move Shift to run on W7, or not ?
I upgraded my hard drive then changed to windows 7 with a clean install. It is amazing how much better my shift runs now that it is on W7. It is really worth it to upgrade.

Windows mobile 7?
Hey guys,
Wonder if you can all help me,
Im not new to Rooting, but i have never come across this error before, ive searched accross XDA and Google, but cannot for the life of me find a fix, found a couple of things about deleting a registry file, and installed the One drivers which i had downloaded from here. I Do not have HTC Sync installed.
When device is powered up normally and connected to USB it as fine. When i reboot the Device into fastboot and connect it, i get a Error saying USB Device not recognised.
When i goto device manager, its shows up as My One under HTC, but has a Yellow '!' in a triangle, when i click on properties it states a code 10 Device Fails To Start error.
Please help as this is really frustrating me... Ive tried everything! And i really dont want to re-set my whole laptop as i will lose ALOT of data!
Like i said, im not new to this, as been doing this since the days of the HTC HD2...Am i missing something? Having a thick moment?
Running Windows 8.1.
If anyone really knows what this could be and could possibly fix, let me know as have team viewer and would gladly let you connect to me to help me out (Donation for your time aswell)
Thanks in Advance!
Really simple mate, windows 8.1 isnt compatible with fastboot drivers for now. Only adb is working atm. So dont be scared, your phone have no problem, its only because you updated to 8.1
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Edit: there is a possible fix if your computer is based on intel chipset usb 3.0. Just google something like Windows 8.1 fastboot fix. Otherwise I think you will need to wait or simply use another computer with win7 or 8.0 or maybe dual boot win7 or even boot win7 with a vm?
Edit 2: search the forum, there is a "how to" force win7 fastboot drivers installation on win8.
Perfect buddy worked a Treat! Thankyou so much! I was getting so frustrated haha!
Didnt know it was a problem with Windows, so just needed to change the search terms, do'h!
For all those that has the problem in the future, a link for the fix!
Clicky!
Mods, this can now be closed, fixed!
fastboot for windows 8.1 over linux and this is my option to work fastboot on win 8.1
load wubi (windows ubuntu installer) over the link http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Wubi
than install ubuntu, on harddrive C:// and reboot your Pc
Now you have a linux in your current system, you can remove ubuntu (linux) in Programms & feautures list in windows.
now reboot reboot the system and isntall in ubuntu fastboot.
you musst give in the terminal sudo apt-get fastboot
and now you can flash your bootloader in linux.
but you musst sudo bevor you type fastboot flash type sudo fastboot flash boot boot.img
adb is working to on linux
i love wubi <3
you say it is easy
gooogle wubi (windows ubuntu installer)
tried running ubuntu in a virtual machine still no go guess the vm needs the windows driver to see the damn usb ports ffs
anyone know if for sure it will work if i actually install ubuntu to a partition?
Sony vaio 13 i7-4500u so only got usb3 ports and small hard drive didnt wanna dual boot really

You can use a Windows pc to download the Ubuntu ISO file. Burn that to a DVD. Reboot, making sure you can boot off the DVD. You can run Ubuntu in memory without affecting your Windows installation. Several people have reported that this works.
Personally, I have two hard drives on my computer and I already had Ubuntu installed on the other drive, just for doing stuff like that.
Or if you want the windows files, I probably have them archived. Just let me know if you want them. Note that unlimited.io / juopunutbear do not support the windows version at all any more. I did my s-off on windows (and I'm sure many others did too) and it worked out OK.
Yes please. If you could send them to me that would be great. You can pm them or if for some reason pm doesn't work my e mail is [email protected]

1) Install SDK and setup adb
simple script to setup sdk and adb on linux, tested on old version linux mint as im using Ubuntu 14.04 now http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459945
just in case the udev rules is not available on above link. http://rootzwiki.com/topic/258-udev-rules-for-any-device-no-more-starting-adb-with-sudo/
2) Add below code inside android 99rules
#Xiaomi
SUBSYSTEM==usb, SYSFS{idVendor}==2717, MODE=0368
3) Voila, u can now use mtp into linux
4) other than that, u can use ftp. It is built inside the mi file explorer and connect it using Filezilla or simply type the ftp host into web broser.
