I have not been able to get this working, even after a re install of the kindle program. I am using go launcher hd, I put the kindle launcher on the home dock page and just use it for getting to my books. Better than nothing, but still a bummer.

Yeah I wanted easy access to all my books rather than open the launcher I agree it's a bummer!
I think the amazon launcher is needed one time, after which the kindle app can always launch (need to verify). There's also a similar Kindle app in the play store, you can rename the default Otter version and load the play store one.
Does that program allow you to get to the cloud? I have a lot of books on there and would still like access rather than eating up space on my kindle.
I have the kindle fire hd 7 inch non rooted. Skype works perfectly while kindle is on. After maybe ten mins of having the screen off, when I receive a call it rings but when I unlock the device a little box in the middle says "skype force closed", or something like that, and you can either choose "wait" or "ok". Anyone else experiencing this? I was thinking of using the phone version instead of the kindle version to see if it is better.

try this
Try using the program "Skype Boot." You don't need to have the Play Store installed; use go to the 1Mobile website, download the installation APK, install, open, and search for the Skype Boot program--enables opening Skype at boot up. I'm not sure it will help you, and you'll have to reboot to try it. I'd uninstall your version of Skype, and select to download the one fresh from the Amazon App store labeled for Kindle Fire. When you uninstall, select to uninstall from the app settings menu--completely wipe the program. Force close, wipe data, then wipe cash, then uninstall. That's just what I'd do. Then re-install the app, selecting it from the app store.
Sign in to it. I have a microsoft account I sign in with. probably doesn't matter. after that, go and open the Skype boot app from 1Mobile ('cause you didn't have any issues installing that, right? SHOULDN'T). Select to load Skype at bootup. Navigate out of that app, and reboot, see if that helps.
I've things a bit different in my setup; I'm rooted, and I used titanium backup to convert Skype to a system app. It hasn't force closed since yesterday when I rebooted. Also, if I go to my settings menu and look at installed applications and select to view running applications, Skype is not listed as running, but it definitely is (showing Online status in the notifications pull-down).
Just FYI, there's no harm in rooting, it won't break anything--but installing the Play Store is a bit complicated. Most people, myself included are not remotely interested in installing a recovery or flashing a ROM; it's risky, and any ROM you might flash at this point will seriously decrease the KFHD functionality. At this point this thing Flies, especially in comparison to the original KF. Flash a ROM and you likely won't even be able to play video (hehe, you might brick it too, if you're lucky!). Don't hold your breath on getting a ROM that actually improves Amazon stock function. That kinda broke even with the original KF, and with HD I don't think the incentive is really there to move and shake, dev-wise.

my kindle fire HD after trying this ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43274610#post43274610 ) mod that surpolst to fix the black wallpaper issue has instead made my toolbar where it will show up for a few seconds then just go away, and it dosent even say my name anymore, it just says my kindle on the name. at one point my kindle was rooted, but in efforts to fix this problem i have un-rooted ( used unroot app on computer and restored factory defaults) im wondering what else i could do to possibly fix it, or since all the root is gone should i just get a hold of amazon?
any help would be appreciated, thanks!
I used to experience that too. Just do a factory reset and re-root...
Gmail notifications can cause this. Disable Gmail notifications, might fix it.
Sent by KFTT, in spite of everything.
factory restore on a kindle dosent un install root, and I've already tryed the gmail as I have seen that in another post, no diffrence at all
Restore kindle using kindle fire first aide and choose 7.2.3 option, it should restore kindle to bone stock, like when you first used it

Toolbars Gone? ...Download KindleFree From Google Store
You know it takes some time to root this thing. Before you start over...first download the app KindleFree (Free) by Stephen (Stericson) it's kinda hard to find. I downloaded from Google store, installed and set it up and rebooted. Afterwards, I got my toolbars back, but still can't get those live wallpapers to work!

I managed to replace the launcher in Fire OS 5.0.0. I just (sideloaded) copied the apk for smartlauncher and installed it. It was working fine, until the tablet (during use) restarted and installed 5.0.1. After the update, I had the default launcher again.
For older Kindel devices, I read, that you can block (in Lollipop it's now hide) the amazon launcher via adb.
pm list packages does not show a com.amazon.otter package, so hiding it, doesn't work. Instead I found com.amazon.firelauncher but if I hide (block) that package, a tap on the home button brings up a message from the parent control saying "The requested action is not permitted. Check Parental Controls settings and retry."
Any other ideas what I can try to replace the launcher?
Exact same issue here. Looks like the fire os update 5.0.1 locked things down a lot. You also can't give SD card write access to an app anymore as the SD card doesn't appear in the file manager that opens (eg when trying to copy a file from internal to sd card via es explorer) - but this did work on 5.0.0.
Really hoping someone manages to root this thing fairly quickly, it has awesome potential for a cheap little device but Amazon's persistence in locking stuff down is frustrating.
I've tried to set multiple launchers as default, but none of them work. You can't even "clear" the default settings for Fire Launcher. The app "Home Switcher" doesn't work either.
I think we'll have to wait until someone roots it to achieve it, as it is impossible right now.

It's extra annoying because it was possible until the day-1 update. That update prevented changing the default launcher, and prevented micro-sd storage from appearing when granting permissions to write to external storage.

Maybe Gatesjr debloater tool (here on xda) will work to disable launcher package you identified. Also, see if you have com.android.launcher. This is stock launcher on 2014 models running OS 5.
Can we overwrite the ab with the Google now launcher?
Just wondering if anyone's found a solution for this yet. I'm game for being a guines pig and trying things..

Aww, c'mon, be nice. It had been a few days and no one said anything. If anyone had an idea and was looking for people willing to brick to test because it was so cheap, I was willing to offer.
Just for the fun of it, I'm going to play with testing all the different "universal" rooting options to see if I can get around the launcher issue and I'll report back what I find.

This discussion gives me an idea.. Could one unpack a new fire and block the OTA by disabling the update mechanism allowing for the launcher and sdcard exploit to remain?

If you connect to wifi during the initial setup it automatically does the update. At least it did it on mine.
Yeah that is what I am proposing before ever connecting to WiFi. Hmm is it worth $50 for me to find out. My initial one is already updated so no joy there.

As far as I know someone did that in one of the other threads and then used the OTG ethernet adapter. I personally am not a fan of the idea though to only be able to access the Internet via the adapter.

I'm interested in this issue. There's a thread about using ADB Shell in Fire HD to block the package amazon.device.otter to allow default installation of another launcher. I finally got ADB to accept the Fire 7 (USB driver was a big challenge) but in new version of Android Block command has been replaced by Hide command. Anyway, hiding amazon.device.otter had no effect. On the other hand, hiding com.amazon.firelauncher almost did the trick, it defaults to new launcher (in my case Nova), but then sort of freezes, citing Parental Controls. Anyway, I almost got there. Anyone else's input is appreciated.

So I got this working without rooting.
I'm on the latest preview for 5.0.1 asof the time this post was written. I am not sure what I did...
I had sideloaded google play store & services and got that working for 5.0.1. From there I grabbed the google now launcher.
I hid the com.amazon.firelauncher as well as some amazon parental controls package (don't remember the name). It did give me the error about parental controls. I ended up rebooting and it went to the upgrade screen again for updating the OS. It stayed there for a while and I thought it froze so I rebooted again. It then appeared to go through the fire os install again.
Once more it started up (while plugged in to computer) and it gave me the parental controls error. However, after a few minutes the google now launcher started working. It went through some intro screen and viola. My google now launcher now comes up as default when my kindle starts.

Yes that must of been it.
The home button will not work because that parental controls dialog will pop up. To get around it I click up in the google search bar above and then hit the back button. That will cause the desktop to show. It should also show if you close all open programs.
Hi All,
I managed to use the method shown here- https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/themes-apps/play-store-amazon-5-4-0-root-t3669740 to download google play.
This worked well, and I managed to download and use apps from the play store. Eventually I decided to organise all my apps into folders, taking it from 2 screens of apps into 1. I then turned off the tablet overnight. After I rebooted this morning, everything worked normally, apart from the fact new apps downloaded from the store wouldn't have an icon appear. The apps still work perfectly, they just don't have icons on the screen which is mildy frustrating.
Any help on this would be great!

Hi, I assume I am just using the original launcher (not 100% sure however). I am trying to find the application under manage apps like you said, however I cannot find a name of an app called launcher, or with launcher in the name. Is there a specific name for the app?
Sorry to be a pain!

This is an increasingly frequent complaint with recent builds of FireOS 5.6, especially in the HD 10. Root cause is not apparent and there does not appear to be a durable workaround at the moment. My guess is a 'glitch' snuck into the stock launcher that will be addressed in a future update. Conspiracy minded members will claim Amazon is up to no good. Will see where it goes.
For now not much you can do other than wait for a fix or attempt to use a different launcher with accompanying pros/cons.

I just got my son a Fire 8 for xmas and it has the latest 5.6.0 software and I got all the google stuff installed and was working great. He downloaded a few games and apps with no issues then he downloaded 2 other apps (games) and they didnt get added to the home screen (stock fire launcher) and the only way to get to them is through the Play Store pretty much and then select Open from there. Is there any way to get them added to the home screen? They will show up in the recent apps but after you use a few other apps its gone. Its frustrating to say the least.
EDIT: I tried the force stop and clear data thing and it didnt work. Still missing app icons on the home screen. If I install Nova Launcher or something though they all show up in the app drawer. Im on the fence with this Amazon Fire at the moment.

I did not but I did delete the 2 apps and then later did a reboot and then just reinstalled them to see if it would have issues again and this time they both showed up on the home screen. I hope my kid doesnt run into issues and cant find his apps if he installs them. Either way, they are there now and hopefully no more issues. Fingers crossed.

Hi, I just got my first fire hd 7th 'gen. I tired the hack and I do have google working on the it now, but like others here my apps on the home screen are not showing up ( the ones I installed the day of the hack are fine).. it is the apps I have installed the say after that are not showing up on the home screen, I had files ready to go but... HO hum!
what I call Add/Remove: they do show up, but unlike a phone or windows. I have no clue how to fix this. since it seems you can't drag and drop from a master folder within the system.
I have seen where you got your home screen working again, but I don't know enough about the Fire 7th Gen yet.. can you or someone be so kind to point me to the correct place where I will find the launcher?
better yet, tell me what the launcher is.
Also on the search, is there a way I can get a google toolbar installed? I dislike using bing. I have to say I do so love my Google tools. and I miss my google search bar I had on my cell phone..
