Has been a while since I last tinkered with a phone. Am wanting to unlock the bootloader and flash CM to my Sony Xperia T, and found these instructions to help
http://www.xperiablog.net/2012/12/04/how-to-install-cyanogenmod-10-on-your-sony-xperia-t-guide/
All fairly straight forward stuff, although the instructions make mention of installing Java. I already have JRE installed on my PC, if memory serves me right, it's Java JDK that I also need to install?
Also, last time I tinkered with my phone, I had to enable USB debugging but the instructions make no mention of it. Do I still need to do this or not?
Many thanks in advance
Rich
These are the only instructions you need to follow
http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/instructions
They are the official ones from Sony
Yes, but the official Sony instructions also make mention of the necessity to download/copy the 'android_winusb.inf' file and paste it into the usb driver folder within the Android SDK, but curiously no other guides make mention of it. Was wondering if Sony's instructions weren't upto date?

I have no comment to make about this,,,,,,,
Are you seriously saying that Sony don't know how to unlock their own bootloader? Considering the only way to do it is via the official Sony method, I suggest you follow their instructions....
Are you seriously saying that Sony allowed unlocking of the bootloader for the Xperia Z1, knowing it would shag the camera function for everybody who did it.....???

Unlocking the xperia Z1 bootloader is not on the supported device list and adequate warnings about it are on their site, so yes I am saying that.
Also, this is in the Xperia T forum so has nothing to do with that issue
You're absolutely right, it's not on the supported device list. But it was originally - which is why Z1 owners started unlocking their bootloaders - which is why Sony backtracked and it was no longer a supported device. Because naturally, every Z1 owner wants to disable camera functionality. And who wouldn't? It's always the first thing I try to do when I get a new phone.
So if you're saying that, I'll take advice from somebody else. But thanks for trying.

You are more than welcome to take advice from someone else. But basically these are the facts
1) The only way to unlock your bootloader is via the official Sony website following their instructions.
End of facts.
If you do find another way, please do share because there is a thread in the general section with about $1000 waiting for the person who can do it.
Good Luck
Yes, I am fully aware that is the official method, but it would be naive to suggest that Sony are the font of all knowledge when they messed up where the Xperia Z bootloader was concerned, and no other instructions I've researched on the web (with regard to unlocking the Xperia T) make the exact same references as Sony do.
I actually think caution is a sensible approach, hence my original question.
I unlocked the bootloader of 3 Xperia T's following nothing but those instructions.
They were perfectly fine. Just give it a go.
Will do, that's great, thanks.

I feel kinda screwed here, I purchase phones without contract on purpose so that I do not have locked bootloader restrictions, though i cannot with this Xperia T, It's a lovely phone and I'd prefer to not return it for this restriction.
I'd love to get my hands drity on the Xperia T' s kernel source
What would you guys recommend me?
FYI, I only rooted the phone and updated to Jelly Bean.

Currently there is no way to unlock your botloader if it says its not allowed.
I would return it and get ask for one that can be unlocked.

This is probably a stupid question, as I guess you are well aware of this issue, but are you sure that the bootloader was unlockable when you purchased the phone? What I have in mind is that if you've used Goroh_kun's rooting method (or option "3" from Bin4ry's script), then the service menu incorrectly shows that bootloader unlocking is not allowed. I haven't bothered to check whether this actually does prevent the unlocking or it's simply a bug in the service menu itself, caused by the hooked library, but in any case it can be easily fixed. From what I've heard, it would be rather unusual to have an unbranded Xperia T that has the bootloader unlockable.
Edit: Ah, sorry, just noticed in your signature that my comment was also not relevant anymore, in addition to being unlikely helpful in your case.

This has actually been fixed in the latest version (22+) of the Bin4ry's script. If you do the rooting manually, using the Goroh_kun's method, I'd suggest that you make a copy of /data/data/com.sonyericsson.android.servicemenu/lib/libservicemenu.so, noting also the ownership (should be system:system) and permissions (most likely 644). I went so far as to restore the file's timestamp, but that seems to be unnecessary. In case you forget to do this, just take a look at Bin4ry's script and use the library he provides in the archive.
BTW, could you please tell which ROM version have you rooted successfully? I got a phone with 7.0.A.3.226 preinstalled, and neither method seems to work. There's simply no /data/local.prop for Bin4ry's original method to work (it seems to either be completely ignored if created, or at least its ownership is checked to confirm it's owned by root and not by, e.g. system), and Goroh_kun's method fails to switch the ownership of /sys/kernel/uevent_helper to system (if I understand correctly how it's supposed to work). Judging from other reports, this ROM version (and .223, perhaps) has indeed been patched against Bin4ry's method, and Goroh_kun's is likely working only on JB, so no surprise, but I really hoped I could make a full 1:1 backup of the phone.
Cheers,
Luchesar
P.S. Here's an article* that mentions the problem with the bootloader, but the solution is indeed much simpler. (Sorry, being a newbie here, I'm not allowed to post the link more conveniently. )

any resolution which does not involve flashing or boot unloading or whatever those intricate processes are?

Have you tried a thethered update (with PC and Sony PC Companion)?
Else find out what Model (I'm guessing C6602) and customization number you have. Open the dialer and type *#*#SERVICE#*#* (*#*#7378423#*#*), then go to software info. the Customization Number is a 8 digit number of the form XXXX-XXXX. Then go to this thread and see if a update for your version exists. If it does, you should be able to get it via PC. If it doesn't you have two choices. Flash another (Generic) ROM or wait. I understand that you don't want to Flash because you are not familiar with the process, but it is certainly manageable by someone with average computer skills (patience, willingness to read and to double-check) which you seem to have.
EDIT: Just had a look at the "Latest firmware version per customization" thread. If you have a C6602 1271-0119 Generic US, you need to do the update via PC, the OTA update is not available yet.

He specifically said that he did not want to unlock or flash. I interpreted factory unlocked as unbranded, because Sony would never "factory-unlock" a bootloader.

I have just moved to XZ1c from Z3c. Rooting the Z3c was so easy, flashtool, bit of old firmware and an exploit and you were away.
Seems that it's much more tricky now.
There is an 'OEM unlocking' option in the developer options, not sure what that does.
Does anyone know if iRoot works and if it's possible to disinfect your phone and replace it with SuperSU afterwards?
I can see lots a couple of generic Sony 'how to's' in the guides thread, but no feedback from anyone who's done it with a real life XZ1c.

That's to allow you to unlock the bootloader, but with no MM ROM available we're unable to back up DRM keys, but with no TWRP.img as yet either flashing a Superuser.zip might be hard. I'm in no rush to root so haven't tried hotbooting a TWRP.img from another ROM.
Iroot / vroot whatever you call it
not sure what happened with the original software but in the present this is nothing but belated adware and spyware it is pure spy when actually not even as well a virus it will not root but gives a false message that it has rooted and install a bunch of crap well on your PC as well as Android device on Android device it will automatically start downloading a bunch of jar files and install some virus apps Android OS if it is sensitive will complain that this seems to be a Malware none of the virus programs including Norton and other hochos will detect this it has to be manually removed file by file folder by folder do not under any circumstances install this so called rooting software
Yes, iRoot is working 100% fine. Good luck.

This is definitely not true!
There is actual no way to root a xperia XZ1 Compact without unlocking the bootloader.
At the XZ1 section you can find manuals how to get root.
But read them with care, because you loose your DRM Keys and you never get them back!

Xperiafix is $20. But it comes with support from sToRm// who wrote it. So if you have any issues, you go back to the website and raise a ticket and he'll help you.
Once you have the correct ADB drivers installed (more difficult than it sounds, Windows10 makes this very tricky), it's pretty much automatic. Start the software, follow the instructions.
You end up with the latest TWRP installed and Magisk systemless root. This works on any version of firmware you have installed.
If you want some reading on how to set the drivers up, have a look at the original thread, although this is in the XZ premium forum, the Xperiafix also works on compacts.

Okay, first of all, go to your phone app and enter *#*#7378423#*#*. Then navigate to service info- configuration. If it says "Bootloader unlock allowed: yes" Your bootloader is still locked and you could try to update your phone via an over the air update if available or Sony Companion, or whatever it's called.
If it says "bootloader unlocked: yes" you could try to flash any firmware with flashtool by androxyde. As long as you uncheck the box with wipe data all your data will be kept.
A backup of your files is only possible if you have a custom recovery installed. For that you need root and it's risky if you're new to it.
I don't have any working Xperia T anymore, so I can't give you an advice since it's been such a long time that I flashed it.
If you follow my suggestions above you'll be able to update to Android 4.3 though. In the service menu at the point Software info you'll find your customization version. Write it here and I'll see what the newest version for your phone is.
Cheers

It says
Bootloader unlock allowed: NO
And its already rooted(came rooted when I bought it) I used to do it with some old phones (well, way older), so I know some of the risky stuff
The thing is, I was searching for a recovery to install, but , apparently it only can be done on android 4.3 (or at least is what Ive seen around, I still having the 4.1) , I tought would be the same process to drop the files on the system folders
And the customization number 1266-9267_R21
SO, shall I try to directly update to 4.3 in order to install any other stock roms?

Hey, just after a little help
I was just wondering if there was a way to root the XZ1C without unlocking the bootloader? I didn't really see a guide
Can you still hide root or go back to stock so that apps that don't work with root won't have any issues? I know unlocking the bootloader can cause issues, not sure about just root though.
I did see this, but it seems to be a bit outdated
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xp.../reference-xperia-debranding-rooting-t3667368
Oh and also, is it true that the Xperia XZ1 Compact doesn't have double tap to wake? Is there no way of getting it back? Since most of you have probably had one for a while, what are some other drawbacks or negatives about the phone?
Thanks for any assistance :good:
I don't know of any ways to root without unlocking the bootloader, at least not on any Xperia. Pretty sure it's required. It didn't cause me any problems running latest stock then unlocking and flashing TWRP and Magisk. In fact it worked pretty well.
Phone is incredibly fast and smooth. I've used different ROMs. Haven't seen double tap to wake. Anyway it's the best compact phone by far, the only drawback being no raw image support so google camera isn't compatible. The stock camera app is good but not great.

I really need to update that guide as it is outdated. To answer your first question, not really, an unlocked BL is required to get the most out of the phone.
If you want to root just unlock bootloader, flash TWRP in fastboot mode, then flash magisk in TWRP. It's fairly simple. But that's only if you unlock the bootloader.
Thanks for the responses, really appreciate the help. Good to hear the phone is still fast and smooth.
I'm pretty sure I was able to root my Z3 Compact in the past without unlocking the bootloader. I think it was through flashing a stock rooted .ftf file. I was really hoping something similar would be possible here. My concern is the apps that detect an unlocked bootloader and restrict access. Banking apps for example. Doesn't it also cause issues with Sony cameras once you unlock the bootloader?
I'm fine just being on stock Rooted and not being able to use custom ROMs if that's at all possible without unlocking the bootloader?
The XZ1C fortunately doesn't have the same issue as the other previous Xperia models when it comes to unlocking bootloader and losing DRM keys for the camera. So if you unlock, the camera will behave like it does on locked stock.
If you want to root stock you'll still need to unlock the bootloader. I haven't seen any other way to do it. Maybe it's possible if someone on root stock uploads their rooted boot.img and you take that and replace the original boot.img in the ftf but I don't know if that'll work.
It's disappointing to hear honestly. Given I did it on my Z3C, I thought it'd be possible here. Oh well, thanks for letting me know!
Maybe I'll have to see if I can make do without root. Does rooting still block Sony Apps like PS4 Remote Play, or have a lot of issues been ironed out by now? I know Banking Apps are completely blocked. You can't hide it, right?
What would you guys suggest is the best guide to rooting these days on an XZ1C on Android 9?
I use banking apps regularly and haven't had any issues despite both safetynet and CTS profile failing, I'm still looking into getting that fixed. I'm not sure about Sony remote play on root.
To root stock you just need to unlock the bootloader using the Xperia Flash tool, then in fastboot mode flash TWRP, then boot to TWRP and flash Magisk. It's surprisingly pretty simple.
There's also a recent thread here that I didn't see before about rooting with a locked bootloader, you might find something there. Haven't tested it myself though.

Thanks, I'll definitely have a look at that. I did notice it said Android Oreo when mine's on Android 9, but I assume you can downgrade using flashtool. There's probably a list of firmwares somewhere on the forum, right?
One thing I am confused about it is you mentioned you don't lose your DRM keys on the XZ1C, but a lot of guides seem to talk about backing up the keys and the TA Partition as the camera won't work otherwise. What's the reason for that? Are the guides just a bit outdated and there's no current one available?
Thanks for all the help btw, appreciate it

Thanks for all the help btw, appreciate it

No problem. Flashtool will probably only have Pie firmware available. You could try this post for a link to the Oreo firmware for Central EU:

As for unlocking the DRM keys, I should clarify - I meant that if you unlock the bootloader you still lose the DRM keys but the Sony stock camera works as intended with most of features still enabled (before there used to be a green screen and glitches but not anymore for Pie, as with previous xperia models). I think some still get disabled after unlocking.
You can read more about that here: https://www.xda-developers.com/sony-xperia-android-pie-unlock-bootloader-drm-fix-camera/

I'll definitely try that, looks like it might be worth trying the whole temp root method from Oreo and then updating back to Pie after.
I read up on the link, it's nice to see Sony reinstated Camera functionality, but honestly I wouldn't really want to lose access to the other features too from unlocking the Bootloader. Is there a way to keep them by backing up and restoring the DRM keys? Any recommended software for that?
I clicked through and saw this link, but I'm not sure it works for the XZ1C or is the most updated version

I'll have to do a bit more reading, I was looking for a more up to date guide for everything like unlock/backup/restore etc, somewhere on this forum but I've not been able to see it honestly.
Afraid I haven't seen anything recent here on DRM backup and restore cause I haven't searched but maybe someone else knows. I haven't noticed any difference myself without the keys tbh.

"I've not been able to see it honestly", seriously?! Try looking harder, and in the right section. - https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-xz1-compact

Yeah I was serious

This seems to be the thread, but honestly I was pretty ill that week and didn't really read through it properly, so didn't notice it's got a full breakdown. I thought it was just steps to backup the TA partition.
In my defence it looks like another user on the forum was also looking for the same thing
