Upgrade to the G Flex? - LG G Flex

As the title says, would anyone upgrade to the G Flex? I'm curious as I just finished watching MKBHD's video on how it heals from scratches and was really surprised. I knew it was good against scratches but a knife scratch? Really? I also did some googling and found that it will be coming to Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile So the hype train has officially started. In my opinion I think its some really cool tech and i have always been a fan boy of the curved screens (ex: GNex) but i'm still not sure its worth the money :good:
Link to MKBHD's video: http://gizmodo.com/watch-lgs-g-flex-kinda-self-heal-after-a-knife-attac-1468100430
Link to Sprint confirmation: https://twitter.com/evleaks/status/400495015454978048

I was actually pretty impressed with that video and had no clue this was coming to Sprint until now. The screen size alone makes it very intriguing! I was very close to pulling the trigger on the G2, but I figured I would wait until the HTC One 2 was officially announced. However...this phone definitely has my attention.

I'm seriously considering it.

Having a note 3 I may miss s-pen, but will be cool to have a phone I can use without a case.

saw the commercial, very cool, the self healing and the flex screen. if it's more flexible, it'll be better. fit curve in pocket.

It's rather impressive, but I think i'd wait a bit to see how it handles more real life scenarios. And to be honest, I'm probably not going to upgrade until the next generation of processors.

Makes sense.. I really am interested to see how this technology will evolve. Maybe they can make a self healing screen :silly:

haha true enough! in my experience I don't care what circumstances are, u drop a phone on the edges and its breaking the glass. minus of course a quality case.

As for the present, the improvements that curved phones have over their flat counterparts are rather minimal right now -- the extra value is certainly not significant enough for us to recommend that you spend $1,000 or more to get one

Yeah I think I'll pass on this.

I'm considering the LG Flex as an upgrade to my Note 2. Especially since we're starting to see FCC clearance as this being a tri-band sprint device. The O-LED kinda worries me, but that isn't going to be a deal breaker.

Pocketnow made a "Real-World Torture Test" video for the G Flex: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxmbPDe0h-I

If it gets released with LTE support in north america i will pick one up for sure, looks awesome.

How does the screen look? It's the only thing holding me back as it's 720p.

My upgrade with Sprint is February 1st so right on time for the launch of this phone. I am pretty much torn between this and the Note 3. It's going to be a pretty tough choice, I've been debating a lot since it was announced when Sprint was going to release the G Flex.

Alot of early review say not worth it because of the price. Now that it comming to US I see price is going to be around same as Note 3. Im also considering the Note 3 or the G Flex. A big factor for me is if tmobile model can easily be rooted. If it's bootloader is locked the the choice is mede for me and choosing Note 3. I have the Note 2 and 720HD is fine when watching 1080p movies. Also camera picture quality is a big factor. Sadly G Flex does not have optical stabilization like the sibling G2.
just waiting to hold in my hand to deside and price also.

It's a fantastic phone to say the last. Has to be the most comfortable big phone.

Depends on what phone you have now. I have both the T-Mo one and the T-Mo note 3. The bigger screen is nice on the G-Flex, but the screen on the Note 3 looks better to my eye. I do like the curved screen which is one reason I am willing to give the G-Flex a try. However the S-Pen is really nice on the Note 3. Only you can decide what you want. Go into a store and try out the GFlex and see what you think.
Ok so here are my first impressions, first thing i am coming from a Note 3 and like Prod said i notice the lower screen quality right away. From the wallpaper to the hideous LG icons does are the first to things i disliked right away. I was spoiled with the Note 3 1080p so i can really tell the difference kind of disappointed on flex screen. I played a 1080p Movie and it was ok not as bad as the icons, wallpaper and pictures on websites. On the other hand i like the phone itself the curve, buttons, size and feel pretty much everything so far. Phone feels snappier than Note 3 also. If only the screen was a 1080p this would be a really good phone. I have just played with it briefly so this are my initial thoughts. PS if you guys are debating on this or the Note 3 and if its going to be your long term phone go with Note 3, Like i said in other treads i change phones every 3 months or so and ill probably just have the flex for 2 months. One more pic Flex and Note 3.
I'm coming from note 2 and my plan was to get this phone, get the 6 months of Netflix, use it for 6 or 7 months and then use jump! To get the note 4,which should absolutely be a freaking beast.
Either that or get the s5 but I don't want the s5 then jump to the note 4. Besides I absolutely LOVE the way that the flex looks.

Yea one thing the flex does have is looks for sure and the curve, if coming from note 2 it shouldn't be that bad of a transition. I have been looking at some more 1080p movies on it and its good not as bad and there's something about the curve that give the movies a different feel I wasn't a believer on this but its true.

Saw it today at att store today, At person greeting at the entrance said the phone was not in yet, lol. but it was, I noticed on the way out as I was checking out the Mega and Note 3. The phone holds great in the hand and the curve looks great. After reading review here about the screen that's the first thing I looked for and noticed it a little. The Icon in the phone look as if stretched a bit. Then in youtube saw a HD 1080 vedio and was not impressed. Apart from that I would be very happy with this phone.
The phone seemed to fit in my front pocket no problem. I just started wearing glasses last year and sometimes I forget and my eyes start to hurt from reading on the phone. since you have both N3 and G Flex does reading a book look better (or even noticeable) on the Note 3 vs g Flex? I would imagine it would look sharper on the N3. thus causing less eye strain for me.
Have you tried installing Nova launcher to see if it gives you a crisper icons.
Enjoy you G Flex and thanks in advance.
Congrats on the new phone. I'm a phone whore like you. I took a look at the Flex today at a AT&T store since T-Mobile didn't have it yet and a snow storm is coming now. lol I liked it but coming from the G2 I'm not sure. I'll have to think about it some more.

Reading books and webpages would definitely be way better on Note 3. Thats the main disadvantage of the flex however on videos its not that bad. Again if ur looking for a long term phone i would suggest Note 3.

Ok if ur coming from G2 i would figure the change would not be so bad since its the same hardware and u are getting way more screen only thing would be the great screen quality on G2. In my situation. I gave up storage, 1080p and just gained a bit of screen, 3gb of ram, usb 3.0 and stylus (even though i never used it).

I like the Flex design and battery life but other then that it's just a stretched out G2. I'm just thinking after the newness wears off I might regret leaving the G2. I had the Note 2 and S4 before. I went to the G2 because it was different.

Two words to keep me from Samsung: TouchWiz, Knox
I currently have and S4 I can't wait to get rid of. I got a G2 then TMO announced the Flex release. I returned the G2 because I didn't want to spend a JUMP. I'll be stopping by a store to see if they have it in stock. With better things coming, I think this is a good move to get flex now and see how the new (non Samsung) devices shake out in the next few months (G Pro among others).
Man I can't wait for mine to come in Friday...then its time to start working on root and building aospa!!!
Reason i changed to was that i have been using samsung for a while and wanted a change. I was initially going to change when g2 came out but non sd made me go to N3, but i figured i was not using much memory so went to flex for something new.

Not sure if its AT&T network or my phone. But as of recently, when I turn on GPS, it can't find me. It'll get a general area (within 1 mile), but nothing compared to what it used to do (within 30 feet).
I haven't experienced those issues, but I'll use my Nexus 5 today when I travel to be safe.

I have the Note III, how do you say it has better internals than the Flex?
They have the same Snapdragon 800, they are both Quad cores, they both have the Adreno 330 graphics processor. The ONLY difference is the RAM, oh yeah the Flex has a 3500 mAh battery and the Note III has 3200 mAh battery. So how does the Note III have better internals again?
I'm not sticking up for the Flex here at all (I love my Note III) but it really can come down to the way Samsung and LG skin Android differently.

one tenth the bloat, and the stock ui is pretty decent until roms are available.

for me, color is more important than xxx ppi or whatnot. love me oled.

Let me preface this. I wanted the gflex very badly and went to the T-Mobile store to see it. I am not a fan boy. I compared to my note extensively and the gflex failed on every level except its form factor was amazing. Loved the look and curve. I didn't notice it to be any more snappy then my note and the screen was the biggest disappointment side by side. If I wasn't looking at my note and then looking at the flex I can maybe see how people could say the screen looks nice...after you get past the horrible grainy screen when the brightness isn't turned up. Also its the combination of p oled and 720p that makes it so bad. The gflex 2 will be a lot better and will consider that next year once the technology is where it should be.
Sent from my SM-N900T using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
you know, it was a tough call for me. In the end it comes down to personal preference and more importantly how you use the phone. As others have pointed out, the p-oled display reminds one of the GNex for those of us that used that phone. It's got some grain on low brightness settings and technically the Note III (and many other LCD displays like those in the One and G2) are superior. What I did was use the phones together for a week and at the end of that time period I ended up keeping the Flex. I've had the Note 3 since November and have enjoyed the phone very much for a while now but I found in that week where I had them together I had a slight preference for the Flex. I especially enjoy watching vid on the Flex as I don't use it in this context with low brightness settings. Turned up I find the screen is quite nice and the shape makes the experience for immersive for me. Sorry to sound like an advertising wag but this has indeed been my experience. YMMV. I like the Flex for making calls to. I actually still make a fair number of these and the Flex is more comfortable for me here than the N3. So these are my experiences but honestly you can't go wrong with either. Good luck with your decision.

the difference in the screen aren't enough for me to care, color/vividness matters more to me.
I was given a FREE z1s, and haven't touched it because of the terrible screen. seriously, its THAT bad.
for me, the flex is everything i need. the note was a bag of tricks that i hated.
I just picked up my flex last night and all I can say is WOW!!!
Not sure why anyone would complain about the screen on this phone; the screen is GORGEOUS, fast as snot, and would be a GREAT addition to your phone inventory..Who sits there and analyzes there screen all day anyways? This is a cell phone, not a 4k television.
Not sure if there is much reason to dump a note 3 for it, but, if you are torn between the 2, and don't care about S-pen stuff, the Flex would be a fantastic alternative..

You probably never owned the G flex. It's a fantastic device with insane battery life and speed. Yes the display isn't the best but it's still decent. Both the note 3 and flex are great, it's just that the flex offers something different vs the note that has same old touchwiz.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
yep, they are both great devices; if you need a major productivity tool, the note 3 is probably a better choice; if you want a multimedia, fun, unique phone, the Flex deserves a serious look..
After 5 samsung phones in a row, I had a HTC one max which was very nice, but this thing blows that away, especially with tmobile service versus Sprint..
Okay, the display of the Flex is a mixed bag. Before I go any further, I have to admit I'm a fan of the Flex. Not a fan of Touch Wiz or Sammy Radios
What sucks about the Flex's display are the artifacts and ghosting. Its that simple. What is great is the color and 720. 720 you ask, well this is the best 720 android display you will find. After using the note 3 for sometime, then going to the Flex, you notice whites are whiter on the LG. That's something that's more important than splotchyness you might find. At least for me.

Just Give the LG G Flex A Chance Peeps

I'm kind of surprised with some of the negative G Flex reviews and how some people don't even give the phone a chance. Is Samsung paying them? lol The curved design is not a gimmick. It's pretty damn impressive. IMO The phone just feels right in my hands/face and fits better in my pocket. I was impressed with how LG fit a 3000mAh battery in the compact size of the G2 which is what I had before the Flex. Now after using the Flex for a week LG has impressed me even more with battery life. I know the Flex has a bigger battery by 500mAh compared to the G2 but seems to last twice as long as the G2. Why is that? Probably because of the 720p display right? If so I might be the only one but I think LG was smart doing that. I got annoyed at times having to charge my G2 during the day. I just charge my Flex when I sleep. I think the 720p display is sharp and I have no ghosting. As you can tell I'm very happy with the Flex even coming from a G2.
I ignored all the bad reviews concerning the screen display and I'm happy with my flex coming from a N3... Battery life is superior and I'm only on my 2nd week with this phone.

I must of got lucky. I got mine in Columbus Ohio at a tmobile store and no ghosting issue for me. I do have a grainy appearance to the screen. But turn brightness up and your good if it bothers you. I doesn't for me. I tell you this coming from the note 2 to gs4 the screen was the difference maker for me. But took the hit in battery life never again not worth it if you ask me. I rather have a good to mediocre screen. ( which the flex doesn't have a crappy screen at all just a different technology). And just because everybody's using one type of screen doesn't make it a better just differently.
I personally got tired of Samsung and touchwiz. So I switch will I have the flex for ever? No I won't I will jump in six to eight months from now and into something else that give excellent battery life with killer specs. I don't regret getting the flex we already know what coming down the pipeline anyways. Oh wait let me guess.... HTC flagship, Samsung flagship, LG flagship, new nexus and also ios. It never changes people the flex got me because it's different and I personally didn't want to have compositive keys or hardware buttons such as home and back. Grow tired on rooted to gain this feature. That left me 4 choices nexus, Sony, and lg g2 or the lg g flex I went with the flex because it was the newest device that they had available and don't regret it. Yeah the note 3 is a nice device but my last 3 phones were all Samsung and like I mentioned before I grow tired and was wanting other features that Samsung couldn't offer. Just my 2 cents.
Sent from my LG-D959 using Tapatalk
no ghosting for me either, and with the brightness turned up to 60%-70%, completely grainy free..
I had the same issue with the stupid reviewers on my htc one max; that too was a great phone, but, every doosh bag reviewer found something bad to say about it. Fortunately, I have my own brain, and dont give a rats arse what any "reviewer" has to say about any electronic item I buy.
Sprint network still sucks, and because of that, I had to sell my one max, and our 2 htc one's. We all changed to T-Mobile, and are thrilled with the network coverage and speed outside of Chicago now!
4 Samsung phones in a row was enough for me, and especially with the Knox security Krap they are forcing on every one now..Lg phones are really nice, and my wife and son really like their G2's. We'll see whats out there 6 months from now, but if dev picks up for the flex, I doubt I will want to get rid of it for longer than that; the best battery I have ever seen in a phone. Now, if they would just come up with stereo front facing speakers for this beast!!
Crazy I'm in Columbus, Ohio but I got my Flex online from T-Mobile. Maybe if people don't put a magnifying glass over the phone they might enjoy it. LoL. My only issue if you call it a issue is that I want to carry the Flex naked but it's not easy to do plus risky business.

Love the display, only ghosting I've ever seen was in injustice, and was so short a time, l almost missed it. And i too wish i had the scruples to carry it around without a case.

Just come with that custom recovery and I'll be happy when i can see cm11 on this boy other than that the g flex is a really solid phone i put this phone thru more than i did any other phone and i can honestly say the battery in this phone is great a whole shift at work streaming tune in watching movies and still have more than 50% when i get off

I just got the Flex, my reason was the negative reviews. I have a Note 3, while I'm not convinced yet that it's better. I'm open to giving it a chance. I like my stylus. Lol.
Sent from my LG-D950 using Tapatalk
I've only read one review that gave it a thumbs up. It was a woman who reviewed it after having it for a week or so. She gave it 8/10 and I tip my hat off to her. She has small hands and looked past the size of the phone, and just reviewed it straight up.
I don't like reviewers who say the phone is comically large, and the curve of the device is a novelty. That's an opinion. Although reviews should have your opinion, it shouldn't blind you from fact. What's large for you isn't large for me. What fits in your purse, fits in my pocket. Blah blah blah. Anyway I like the Flex, not for what it is, but I like it because its just a better device than its competitors.

Im coming from a note 3 and im liking it so far. Then again i loved the G2. Awesome phones. Good. Job LG

Picked up the flex the other day to replace my Xperia z ultra. Basically same specs slightly smaller. Screen has some issues but the only thing I hate about the phone is 4.2 and the locked boot loader preventing me from getting kitkat. Btw the LG keyboard auto corrected kitkat to diktat. Lol this phone needs to be loved by all its owners ?

I'm happy with the G Flex. I was going to get the nexus 5, but the battery inside of the G Flex was appealing. The only downside I see about this beast of a phone is that there isn't expandable storage and that it's running 4.2. I do notice some of the screen issues, but I can live with it. I can't wait for development for this phone to really start.
KitKat should be coming out soon. Maybe some of the developers are just waiting on that. I love my Flex and that's all that matters to me. LoL

It's a great phone! I miss it sometimes and wish I could carry 2 phones so I could use the N3 as my daily driver and the Flex as my multimedia toy. Can't wait for the Flex 2 to eventually come out with some good upgrades so I can make the switch back.

I came from an S4 and don't miss the 1080P. Love everything else about it especially when upgraded to the Lenovo camera. I love the flex except when you try to add a case then it just becomes way to large otherwise perfect for me!
My only issue is the screen. It is ugly. But i love thr curve.

G3 thoughts

I was converted to lg with Nexus 4, and have stuck with them. I was a long time HTC fan, but the g2 is the best phone I've ever owned.
I'm a little disappointed in the news on g3. It seems the screen will be bigger and a higher resolution, but the battery is staying the same? Isn't this going to severely change the battery life?
The processor isn't going to be the LG octa core we had hoped for, I am just really not too excited. Anyone have any good news?
Sent from the BEST phone I've ever owned my LG G2
The good news is that the LG G2 is a great phone, and there is no reason to spend the extra money on the G3.
Thanks Devs, from my LG G2
Yeah I find it a bit ridiculous that they are going 2k screen yet many companies can't make a 1080p screen last more than 15hrs.

Well I'm a phone junky. I've had the g2 longer than any phone ever. I just hope there is more to g3 than been released so far.
Also wish you could buy one of the new phones from One or OPPO and use them on Verizon

G2 is still good I'll wait for G4, I think they are aiming too high on G3 with bigger screen and same battery size
I just don't get it sometimes. People are killing the HTC M8 and even more so the Galaxy S5 for being "more of the same", so LG works on a totally revamped UI, a (industry first) 2k screen and more that's yet to be seen and people are now complaining because they're "reaching too high"?
I understand the battery concerns, but that's speculation at this point. I am not a huge fan of the UI, but I also hated the original UI on my G2, it's grown on me with the help of LGs built in themes. I, for one, am glad they are trying to make their phones drastically different.
I have an upgrade I'm thinking of going to htc one m8. But was gonna give lg a chance to impress. How are the speakers on g2 I know will not compare to htc one m8.

Honestly, with viper4android installed, along with a few sound increasing options ticked on it, my phone speaker is rediculously loud, stock its pretty quiet, but the potential for it to be loud is there.
I think HTC will inevitably be gone. Everytime one of the people does something that is of really high quality, such as their recent design guy, they leave. LG is one company that has the resources to go toe to toe with Samsung and Apple. I'm not complaining, I just don't want them to lose the momentum they gained. As for LG ui? I loved it from jump... Much better than Sense or TW

The new UI will surely be ported to the G2 at some point, as for the hardware, I don't think they shot high enough. The hardware changes between the G2 and G3 just are not enough to warrant the cost in my opinion. I am with others, I will wait for the G4 or 5 before I make any changes. The larger screen higher res but same battery is going to be an issue. I guess we will see.

It comes down to what's available. None of the new phones this year were massively better than last year. And battery technology has become lateral. 1080p is already as good as it can get..2k? Will or can anyone tell? The cameras are the only real place for drastic improvements and both HTC and Samsung failed to deliver. These companies keep pushing out phones because they have too now. Annual flagships are almost required to stay relative even when the technology doesn't support the need to upgrade. I'm excited to see what Motorola will do next. They're the only phone manufacturer last year that didn't use the latest and greatest and still hit the mark. Better camera, better battery life and better screen. all fairly easy to obtain. And they have a homerun

Forgot which site it was but they reported on a rumor stating it would be coming to Verizon. Seeing as how Sony is facing manufacturing delays though in other markets who knows when it will finally come to the US.
As for the G3 I'm just hoping Verizon doesn't push LG around in order to have a unique variant like they did with the G2. It results in a very limited amount of cases to choose from when compared to the standard model.

I dunno if you guys have heard of Flowly (App that has several sources for Android news like Phandroid, AH, AC, etc) but I read a few articles on there that said the Sony Xperia Z2 will not be coming to any US carriers, not even T-Mobile. They'll sell unlocked phones in the US but that's it. I don't know why, but it seems like something on Sonys end is causing issue since not a single carrier will be selling it. It's lame IMO, but things like that are why Sony doesn't matter when it comes to anything Android.

I have grown very fond of the wireless charging though.
Yeah its cool, but I'm tired of being the bastard model too. Cases are hard to find. I'm anti iPhone but if iPhone 6 looks cool, I'm tempted to get it just so I can play with cases for a bit

You should be kicked out of your own thread for saying that. Lol
We don't need a 100 cases. I'll gladly take Qi charging over standard back design. I only wish Verizon hadn't changed the back buttons.
Worry about locked bootloaders, not cases.

That bootloader is what worries me. Since they blocked Loki with KK, the G3 is going to be in the same boat. But this time with no way to push a loki'd aboot since there won't be one.

You mean You don't need cases and prefer wireless charging. You don't speak for everyone tho. I care less about wireless charging but enjoy a variety of cases to mix it up.
I agree on the boot loader. Its gonna suck

V20 worth it?

Does anyone think that v20 is worth the trade? I'm 50/50 since both phones are almost identical. Any opinions of its worth it?
im in the same boat, v20 seems legit but man, after holding my note 7 I think I will have to keep it. Well exchange it for another note 7
I'm going to watch the forums here, two weeks after the V20 hits retail. Should be interesting.
Waiting is the key
Yeah I'm gonna wait as well. Once it comes out, which is the 26th of this month I believe, then I shall decide if it's worth keeping the note or not. I'm just glad the recall promotion runs all the way through the 30th so that's a relief
I had the V10 for 2 weeks and it scratched very easily, the V10 was great so I bet the V20 is even better. The better question is to have an S-Pen or to Not have an S-Pen?

I haven't researched on an S-Pen alternative for touchscreen devices. Are there any out there, without such an "eraser head tip?" Love the precision of the S-Pen tip. Just wanted to know what is out on the market, if I were to get an LG V20, and wanted to use a stylus with a small tip like the S-Pen.

I honestly almost never use the S-pen. I take it out occasionally but just to play around. I don't see it's value for me personally.
Yea, I ALWAYS use it for hours after first getting the phone but I never seem to stick with it. Honestly, I would really love to try out the LG v20. It looks surprisingly really really good. However, I'm sure i will get tired of it quicker than the Note7.

The V20 is impressive and a worthy trade for the Note 7 IMO! You are getting everything minus the S-Pen but plus a removable battery! I'm not sure, but I think the bootloader is even unlocked. I'm not switching, but based on specs, it's a good trade!

dont count on the bootloader being unlocked. when the v10 first came out it was locked but quickly unlocked. the same thing happened with the g5. i had both on tmobile which in the past usually came with unlocked bootloaders. unlocked bootloaders are becoming a thing of the past on tmobile.
Going from the Note 4 to the V10 was a disappointment screen wise. I have a feeling going from the Note 7 to the V20 IPS will be the same for me.
Have fun with the bootloops !
The V20 is impressive, I'm watching the forum section, and will try hand's on when in the stores....
Any word on the price? If its less than $700 (lol yeah i doubt it) then maybe I'd consider it

This. The screen on the V10 felt like a step backwards. Plus, it started having some burn in/ghosting a month or so before getting the Note7.
The camera and sound were great though. The fact it supported micro SD is what really made me get it over the Note 5. Build quality was good IMO, as I was able to rock the phone naked for almost a year and it still looks great. Just a few scuffs on the rubberized back.Chipset was slightly on the weak side for a flagship, but that's just being over critical.
All in all, I feel the V20 is a solid phone and a good step up from the V10. I doubt the screen will be as good as the Note7 however, and considering how much I look at it when using the phone (~90%), I feel it is something that can't be overlooked.
I am really considering the V20 as well. The Note 7 is nice but at the same time, I wouldn't mind moving to something else. I have always been a Note guy too, Note 3,4,5, and now 7. All the real world reports of the scratching make it feel like you have to really baby this phone. It sounds like the screen will be better than the V10 but I am sure it won't equal the Samsung displays either. As long as it is "Good" on its own I think it may be a good trade off for the superior sound quality. If it really is that much better like they claim.
From the android central podcast lg expects low sales of this device, if it comes in at $600 that would be a killer of a deal.

all the sites i have seen have it at $699. i am really considering getting a V20 to replace my note. i am really not a fan of the edge screen on the note. i really don't use the s pen at all. i also like the fact the v20 has the removable battery. sound quality is supposed to be amazing. i honestly think my note 4 is almost as good as my note 7. might have to jump ship from samsung.
Been trying to get excited about the V20 for audio reasons but that's gotta be one of the ugliest phones out there right now.
I don't find the V20 too ugly. I just hope I'm not disappointed by camera and software. But, I'm currently experiencing bad battery life and major lagging on my Note 7. I'd just like to try something different. Who knows, I might like it or I might hate it, lol.
