[Q] Upgrading to the Z1 from my HTC one! - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yo Guys!!!
This is my first post here so please take care of me.
I am going to upgrade to an Xperia Z1 from my HTC one by next month. I just needed some input from you guys on a matter I am a bit insecure about.
Online reviews are constantly bashing the phone for its sub-par brightness and ultra bad viewing angles. My HTC did everything right in the screen estate department. I would like to know what changes should I expect if I get the beast from Sony in relation to:
Viewing angles
Outdoor Visibility
Contrast
It would be awesome if some genuine Z1 user shed a bit of light on this matter.

The Z1 is a step above the Z screen but is not the best that is available in the market.. the Z Ultra although larger is a better display..if are alright with a PolyCarb build phone I would suggest a LG G2 as its got a great OIS camera and a larger (and superior) Screen plus the same internals as a Z1..I Know I am gonna get a lot of hate for this but it is a logical move if and only if water and dust proofing is not a criteria..I moved from a Z1 to the HTC One and I have owned a G2 For a couple of months so u know where I come from..I would suggest u seriously give a thought to the G2 before u invest in a Z1..
I hope I helped..
Cheers

-Viewing angles: Definitely not the best in the market, but not a dealbreaker at least for me. How often do you look at your screen off center? If you look at it directly it's one of the best screens in the market. Anything more than 20 degrees off-center and it starts washing out (but you can still read text). This is largely subjective, for me it's not a huge problem.
-Outdoor visibility: one of the best devices out there for that. IMO it's the best Android phone for outdoor visibility, 2nd only to the iPhone 5S. Where did you read that it was bad?
-Contrastretty good head on. Probably not as good as the HTC One but as good as the LG G2 definitely. Of course because of the not so good viewing angles contrast starts going away pretty quickly once you move off center.

Hey,
Thanks for the awesome reply.
In relation to the outdoor visibility, I just wanted to know how good it is. I never said that I read it was in any case bad.
And thanks for clearing out my viewing angle doubt. Probably I have to live with it, but oh well, I really don't care much for it. The only reason I asked was because if I am getting a $700 product I wanted every inch of it to be worth $700.

I have just made your move from a week ago.
Go swap your phone without thinking twice.
You wont notice any change unless u tilt the screen for extreme angles.
And yes the display is as bright sharp and great as the Htc One in normal handling.

nobody talk about battery? I find z1 the best android phone I have ever had about battery, you can cover whole day with heavy use( or at least I do) and this is the real point with today smartphone......with my z1 I never worry about battery......I think this is important....
and just two other tips.....if you take z1 I suggest you to NOT peel off the anti-shutter film, you can live with it and please don't unlock bootloader or root or downgrade or anything else, the phone is great as it is, consider that in a few weeks sony say give us 4.3 and maybe a few months we have kitkat(sony as just say taht) so for now dont mess up the phone and enjoy as it is.......maybe later in 2014 when there'll be more custom rom you can consider to root ecc ecc.......just my 2cents.....

I had an HTC One so I know exactly what you're getting into! Viewing angles are not an issue for you, it's a problem for others! If you wanna show some photos or something on your phone for a bunch of people at the same time some of them may complain! Blacks are better on the Z1 but whites look better on the One, and outdoor visibility is better than the One but still not so good

Let me tell you something kinda off topic though! I'm loving the Z1 more and more every day! This is the first time a phone outside the iOS ecosystem had made me feel this way. I'm telling you you won't be disappointed
And G2 is a great phone but it is extremely ugly like Samsung (I think it's a Korean thing!)

one more thing to be honest. the only thing made me felt sorry and felt downgrading is the Speakers Experience. the Dual Front boom speakers of the htc one are the best in class. So am saying that to expect a very inferior speaker quality. BUT thats because u can go swim with the Z1 without a worry

i had htc one x
one x has much brighter screen, deeper blacks, better viewing angles - screen is much better in general (even tho its lower resolution)
color reproduction and viewing angles dont even come close on my new Z1
and viewing angles DO matter, as screen gets washed out from just about every angle, you HAVE to watch the screen head on in order to get the full experience which is damn annoying
IPS screens are that much better
TFT doesnt even come close, no matter what software tech sony puts in it
luckily build quality and battery are great so i am not that disappointed with my purchase
also HTC phones have MUCH better developer support for their phones (huge number of roms)

hey anybody know if ATT will release any of the xperia hopefully the c6909 since its lte?
thanks

[Q] Problems with HTC One and 2013 flagships

I have a difficult choice to make between choosing the three 2013 1080p flagship smartphones...
HTC One:
-subpar camera
-4.7" screen but with thick bezels so size of the phone is actually same as the 5"ers (The curved back makes it easy to
handle one handed and thumb can reach other side of screen very easily so I think a 5" would be nice)
-removed the 3rd softkey and put a HTC logo there??? (wtf)
Xperia Z/ZL:
-bad screen, bad screen viewing angles
-horrible battery life, but that comes from the bad screen thats too power hungry probably...
Galaxy S4:
-Pentile Screen, Nuff said
I really wish there was a 1080p 5" compact (ZL/S4) RGB stripe screen flagship with good battery life (8+ hours screen on, video/browsing)
If the xperia had 8 hours instead of 5.5 hours i'd probably get that despite bad viewing angle and contrast ratio of the TFT screen...
I think I am just going to get the HTC One, what do you guys think?
I know this is the HTC One forum, but some unbiased opinions would be cool,
Im still scared if i buy one i'll get a unit with the gaps problem some people are reporting...
Judging from your negatives, I'd say the SGS4 is your best bet. Pentile won't matter at 448 PPI, you just won't be able to see the difference.
8+ hrs screen on? Not gonna happen any time soon.

Hm, I just can't seem to buy into the "naked eye cant see anything past x ppi"
Even if we cant see the pixels individually, it would still be sharper when u look at it wont it?

ANY 1080p phone will be very sharp, I'm not saying you won't notice a difference between them. I'm just saying the difference is going to be in the type of panel used.
Amoled = blacks, vibrant
IPS = brightness, neutral colors
TFT = washed out, poor viewing angles, light bleeding on edges of screen
If it was up to me, the Sony Z would have no business being compared to the One and the S4.

I agree and feel the same about 2013 devices. Just stick with the note2 and see what the note3 brings.

Samsung switched to RGB stripe with the S2, but they decided to go back to pentile cross hatch bs with the s3 and now s4...
They realized that overall it wont really hurt their image that much since majority of users don't even know the full specs
of their own phone...
Overall they cut a lot of cost in manufacturing and profits skyrocket...
Sigh, there needs to be more competition, which will be good for consumers.....whenever a company dominates a market, consumers lose out =(
Samsung could have made the S4 Aluminum body and RGB stripe, which will give their company the image of a premium smartphone maker, but they dont need to because their profits will be a lot higher if they keep doing what they do...
by adding a question in your title, this should be in the q&a section.
but anyways
if your looking for battery life, the s4 has a better standby time.
But both devices are great. You decide on which device you want.

Why not wait a bit for what Google and Motorola are cooking? Based on your post, I can (ALMOST) see into the future and see that you will be complaining about one thing or another no matter which of these three devices you'll get. No offense intended, okay?
Larry Page did say that Motorola would be launching a phone with an "unadultered" Android experience, and people would start to not need to charge their devices every day, worry about kids spilling liquid on phones, and drop their phones without getting worried. And rumors say that the next Motorola phones (or probably just the X Phone) would have a camera based on the technology that Canon (or was it Nikon?) uses.

That might take until August though...=(
I wonder how the new pentile layout looks, instead of the RGBG in the S3, now the subpixel arrangement in the S4 has the green subpixels on a diagonal axis to the red and blue subpixels....hmmm
motorola will release tiny 4.3 inch phones . Even though i saw the petition on gsmarena. I like the 4.7-5 inch sizes. 5.5 is fairly large, but that should be the limit on phones. Hopefully phones that are being released at the end of this year and next year will improve on software optimizations (also KLP) on making android super super smooth, and manufacturers working on their skins making it optimized. Even though sense is somewhat heavy, its good on battery life.
Being on stock android is boring imo.
This design on the htc one is phenomenal, hopefully next years htc will build upon this and hit every sweet spot.

Xperia Z compared to HTC One

Okay first off, I hate to start one of these threads, since it's basically an opinionated question. The GS4 is a no go for me, really don't like physical buttons. Currently looking for a gsm replacement on tmobile for my Galaxy Nexus. The only thing holding me back from getting the Xperia Z is the lack of a huge development community (and possibly reports of poor screen performance). Just curious if anyone who's used these devices could weigh in with their experience. I'd prefer to hear first hand accounts than continue to read expert reviews.
Thanks everyone!
Also, mods if this kind of post isn't allowed on xda anymore, my apologies, please remove it.

I went from a Galaxy Nexus to a Nexus 4, then had the same decision as you.
In terms of screen, the HTC One's has better viewing angles, no doubt about it, so does the Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus. In actual usage, on the latest firmware that improves blacks, it doesn't really matter that much. When actually looking at images, I compared the screens side by side and the Xperia Z seems to have a sharpness or vibrancy that the HTC One's doesnt. I really think the reviews overcook the view angle issue, it nearly put me off.
If you're used to the on screen buttons of AOSP, then I think the HTC one would be really irritating. That was a major factor for me, the quick swipe up from the middle launch of google now is also retained on the Xperia Z.
I found the HTC One difficult to hold, the edges seemed really sharp and hard, and the phone was quite slippery. At the same time the Xperia Z is also quite uncomfortable, but it doesn't feel like it is going to slide out of your hand. The power button placement is also much better on the Xperia Z.
The speaker is definitely much better on the HTC One, that said, the Nexus 4 is much better than the Galaxy Nexus, and the Xperia Z's speaker sounds better than the Nexus 4. So the Xperia Z isn't bad. I hold my phone with my left hand so it doesn't block the speaker, but if you hold your phone with your right hand and play music, then you will muffle the speaker.
I'm sure the HTC One is slightly faster due to newer processor but I don't think this matters that much, both will be fast.
I disliked sense 5 coming from AOSP, hated not being able to remove blink feed (find it really frustrating even though you can move it to a different home screen). The Sony customisations are actually an improvement on AOSP, things which frustrate me are fixed and also there are some other nice additions like location based wifi, bravia engine, wifi syncing with media go. The Sony Gallery called Albums is much much better than AOSP, the Walkman app is really good as is the Movies app. I never used built in apps before but I do here, I haven't installed MX Player.
The better camera in good light is undoubtedly the Xperia Z. I'm an amateur photographer (although street photographer so not much of a pixel peeper) and I'm impressed with the Xperia Z. Again the Nexus 4 is a step up from the Galaxy Nexus and the Xperia Z is much better. I haven't taken many pictures low light but I won't argue that the HTC One will provide better photos, the HTC also takes better videos and has Zoe which is cool (was one of the reasons the HTC One was attractive to me). Front camera is better on the Xperia Z than either the Galaxy Nexus or Nexus 4, the HTC One's is wider than the Z's if that matters to you.
The battery life I've been seeing has been pretty good, eg, if you're playing an mp4 film, I was seeing about 25% drop for 2 hours of watching the film. It's much better than the Nexus 4 which is a bit better than the Galaxy Nexus. Apparently the HTC One has a better battery life, I've never tested it though.
The Xperia Z has Micro SD slot which is great for music and films, I missed that owning the recent Nexus phones.
The last major point is the Xperia Z is water resistant, which is priceless, not because I want to take it under water but because it's nice having a life proof phone that you don't have to worry touching when you have wet hands or worried that rain will get into etc. It's a relaxing phone to own.
I only got the phone last weekend, the HTC One was the same price and I'm very happy with the phone and that I made the right choice for me.
Well thanks for that really in depth review. The more I think about it, the more I really want the Xperia. The water resistance factor hit me today while missing several calls walking through a downpour. I'm sure no matter what I end up getting, it will still be a step up from the gnex (which isn't actually in need of replacing, I'd just like something new). Hopefully T-Mobile releases the phone soon as the leaks suggest. I think I'd rather pay monthly for it than fork over the 500+ now. Thanks again

This is one good things about the Z.

Agree completely with uberlaggydarwin.
Fact is, compared to most (non-Nexus perhaps) phones. Much more actual development gets done such as actual "fixes" for problems and not just hacky workarounds. We still have a way to go towards complete AOSP, theres one or two driver blobs still required for example, and a few minor bugs. But with (almost) every day that passes there are new platform-specific patches submitted to the CyanogenMod device repo on github and if I'm reading them correctly we have already, or will very soon, have a blob-less driver powering WiFi.
I must say, coming from a non-Nexus device it is a relief to see this much actual development and not just WinZip-wielding 10yr olds mashing together ROMs with 10,000 unnecessary hacks that make them laggy and/or unstable.
...a little torn on the screen though. As everyone is saying it is beautiful to look at from the front and probably (from this angle) the best mobile screen I have used, but again, as mentioned, the viewing angles are sub-optimal.
Too add my egg to the basket... I too am coming from a Gnex, which i loved. Been owning the XZ for roughly 3 months now. The screen angle thingy is definitely exaggerated. The colours and the viewing angles will take some getting used to, coming from an amoled screen, but the sharpness and clarity definitely make the transition much more pleasant.
The camera is undoubtedly much much better then on the Gnex, which was my only gripe with it. As to the HTC, I would wager the XZ one better for my taste, but thats only based on reviews, no hands on :/
The battery life has been stable enough for me, for my use... they both lasted about 2 days, Gnex maybe a bit better, HTC again cannot comment.
As far as the build quality... there have been some issues if u read the forms and from my case - the flap on the charging port doesn't wanna stay closed anymore In this case I would say HTC is better. It also prefers on your design preferences.
For me, leaving my Gnex behind for the XZ was actually not that hard of a step. U will have to get used to less development as compared to the nexus devices but that doesn't mean there isn't any. Free xperia team are awesome and CM is coming along nicely and with it a whole bunch of other roms, from PAC, PA, AOKP and independent AOSP projects, so no fear there
In any case, ull get a wonderfull new phone, whichever u choose and I hope u enjoy it!
I guess in terms of development, I definitely prefer actual dev work over tons of roms that are almost the same. Out of curiosity, any soft key mods yet? I have mine set to RECENTS HOME BACK and having been like this for almost 2 years I'd rather not have to relearn default (honestly minor issue I'm just being picky).
I would love to go to the store and compare them as someone has said, but I can't find anywhere local that sells the Xperia Z.

Even since the update the screen on the z has been great and really great to see in bright sunlight how I noticed today using it in sunlight yeah Germany didn't had the best weather as of late lol anyway I also don't think the viewing angle are a huge deal. I still see just fine what is on the display and actually Sony here in Berlin told me that the viewing angle is extra made a little darker so not everyone just can look and see stuff that easy on the screen if u don't want them too. Even so I think the viewing angle o's fine. Never had any issues seeing anything. Battery has been great as long as not being used with mobile data. All phones seem to get sucked dry in no time using Mobile data. At home with WiFi I can easily get 2 days.

Any idea what kind of battery life you guys get with mobile data enabled? I currently get about 16 hours with 2.5ish hours of screen on time with my gnex.

With my Gnex I get about the same as you. 2,5-3 hours of screen on time per day on auto-brightness. With my Xperia Z I can get 4-5 hours of screen time per day, depending on brightness (0%) and usage. With auto-brightness I get like 3 hours per day. But with light usage I can easily make it trough 2 days with my Z. My Gnex never lasts that long, even when I almost don't use it.

XZ and HTC one is neck and neck for me, I dont like sense one bit, havent touch the device but i had prior HTC devices and I can tell ya sense really suck other wise i think the HTC one won in every aspect. if you looking to go CM10.1 then i would go HTC one if you looking to stay stock i would choose XZ.
P.S I dont like the physical key either damn samsung for starting that in the S3

Battery life on data is not that good actually. Well I would say when listening music. Somehow the mediaserver always comes with on and even after turning off music it still drains the battery. Just a reboot fixes that. Listen barely to music on the phone anymore.

I'm having a blast with my Xperia Z.
Lots of fantastic ROMS in development...
Never noticed anything with regards to "viewing angles" i'm one of these freaks that tends to look at my phone head on.
With my own custom setup and settings i'm getting a full days use out of my phone.
I'm getting a whole day's battery life with heavy usage. Internet, Web, Whatsapp, Youtube, Camera etc.
Some people submerse their phones and have no problem, but i'm happy jsut treating my phone as resistant not proof.
I can reply to text messages in the bath with wet hands etc.
Build quality is fantastic. The best out at the minute i feel. Feels like a slab of glass! :fingers-crossed:

1 - how stable are the cm10.2 builds ? Such as battery performance ?
2 - battery performance on stock firmware ?

The battery life is pretty bad OP to answer your question honesty. Also the screen is poor, which may bother you. (very bad contrast and viewing angles). Aside from that it is good. Great design, definitely turns heads
Go look at battery tests, S4 sits as one of the top.
Also op, if you get one without an unlockable bootloder (like myself), you'll never even get to try cm

Seems legit.
Go check any battery tests on gsmarena, etc.. Did not fare especially well.
I mean it isn't horrid, but 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours of screen on time isn't anything to write home about
Depends
Depends on how you intend on using it.
If you're a avid gamer, then I probably would not recommend it. Battery life when gaming is average or below average.
However if you're not, and gaming is reserved for the tablet, then I highly recommend it.
Aside from being one of the most beautiful phones out there, you can get it for quite a good price now. Performance is, honestly, all you really need at the moment.
Despite what people say, the screen is very sharp (admittedly viewing angles are not the best, but it's not a concern for me as I pretty much always view it front on. Also when you think about it, you get more privacy).
Battery life is not bad at all (if you don't run heavy games all the time). On screen time varies and can be between 3.5 - 5 hours or so, but don't be obsessed with the times though, just enjoy it. Unless you have nothing to do all day then it's quite hard to run out of battery during the day. Talk times and quality are pretty good.
Loving my Z, I can't say that this phone is the best at anything, but all together as a package it's quite awesome. Waterproofing is a bonus.
Give it a 0.2 mm thick back cover, custom rom, maybe a sound mod and I guarantee you won't regret buying one!
Coming from my beloved ville, I'm just looking at phones with 2gigs of ram and a quad cpu, and good dev support. its between these 4 phones at the moment
-nexus 4 (mainly for support and xda support)
-s3 i9305 ( better then the s3 as it was an extra gig of ram)
-note 2 (big ass screen)
-Sony xperia z (1080 screen)
Im not the hugest phone gamer, i mainly use my device for Instagram, tumblr, and other networking apps. Iv watched a few reviews on all 4 phones and I'm kinda leaning towards the s3 and the sony ATM. Its just the screen problems (battery drain, and poor viewing angles)

My advice is not to be overly fussy about what you're looking at. By the time you decide, a bunch of new phones will be released and you'll have to start all over again.
IMO all 4 phones have all the goods you need to do what you want. For what you want to do, battery life on all 4 would be sufficient for a whole day.
They are really not all that different unless you go into the tiny details. Honestly, in my experience, being overly focused on the details will make you regret your purchase no matter what you buy.
I understand why iPhone lovers can be much less stressed with their phone choice because there is really no choice for them. I prevents them from feeling bad about making the wrong decision We all know that the iPhone is not the best but it's owners are happy. For android lovers there is a paradox of choice........ which in this case is a bad thing.
So try to look at it a different way.
Since it will be with you everyday, think about which phone matches you as a person, just like when you're choosing clothes, or a car. E.g if your practical or stylish. Reckless or careful etc.
I got the Z because I like style. You may think it may be a bit superficial but the viewing angles are really irrelevant when you think about it. When would you ever need wide viewing angles anyway? It's not like you have a group of 4-5 friends watching a movie on it all the time (if at all). I don't see anyone tilting their phones at an angle to use it. TV, yes, but phone, no. Everything is pretty much on par with the rest of them (except for maybe battery life on the Note 2, but it's too big IMO)
Trust me. Thinking about it this way will allow you to enjoy your phone more and not regret buying it.
If you ask me, I would recommend the XZ, S3, Nexus 4, Note 2 in that order.

It isn't just viewing angles though, the screen is extremely washed out looking with bad contrast.
But view angles matter if, for example, your phone is laying down on your desk and you turn it on to glance at the time, a text message, etc.. It isn\t extreme angles, it is unreadable if you aren't looking at it directly on.
I own a note 2 and this phone, I wish I could have the two make a baby.
I love the design of this phone, but the screen really gets me down :/
Spending that much money, you shouldn't have to "settle"

Any of those will preform better than the z, and will have much nicer screens.
Get the z only if fashion over function is your thought process (you want a nice looking phone, until you turn it on)

The battery life is pretty bad OP to answer your question honesty. Also the screen is poor, which may bother you. (very bad contrast and viewing angles). Aside from that it is good. Great design, definitely turns heads
Go look at battery tests, S4 sits as one of the top.
Also op, if you get one without an unlockable bootloder (like myself), you'll never even get to try cm

well... at first my s4 got 4 hours of screen time (set on low brightness) after a couple of months it was 2,5.. the samsung batteries are very bad..
the screen is poor... yes... but i like it better, the screen is more visible in the sun compared to the s4... i dont really like the oversaturated screen of the s4 anyway... so win win
great design... that is one of the things.. and waterproof... that was actually why i wanted to change... on my s4 i always ended up hitting the screen when touching the damn buttons and it made me angry in the end.
what amazes me.. is that the camera is the same but samsung has made a better firmware.. the camera works very well on s4.. and the z has a very poor camera compared... focus is not great, black dots etc, low light grain and such... EXMOR surely is just a name.. not worth anything imo

Strange must have been a rogue app, I've had my note since it came out and battery life is the same as it was.
You can change to natural mode in screen settings to completely get rid of the oversaturation.
I definitely agree the z's design is amazing. Easily one of the nicest, if not the nicest, looking android phones there is.
What I don't get is why there is macro mode on Samsung but not Sony :/

I'm planning on buying a xperia z, but with all upgrades there's a few things I have to check before I can commit on buying a new phone.
1 - how stable are the cm10.2 builds ? Such as battery performance ?
2 - battery performance on stock firmware ?
Screenshots would be great...

It's a good phone for the price. It's got a sd slot which is always appreciated. Performance is fine and it's got 2gb ram, that will make it last at least 2 years.
The screen is fine for me. Yes, viewing angles aren't great but nothing to worry about, unless you watch very dark movies at night.
Battery is average, standby time is quite good, screen time goes from 2h - 5h depending on what you do.
Haven't tried cm10.2 but Sony stock firmware is quite vanilla.
It all depends on what do you want, how much do you want to spend, etc.

macro mode? in what way?
well... the phone was deep sleeping properly... so i dont know why the battery was that bad... at least now i can say that my phone has used 60% for 2 hours 10 minutes screen time, 1 hour of calls, sms and web usage... with 2 days of standby... i am not unhappy with that.
all stock.. no root or anything.. i have relocked as i need to get the camera fixed... as i have quite a few black dots... when i get it back.. i will root and unlock the bootloader..

I get about 8 hours of screen on time on my note over 2 days or so. Best battery life I've ever had by far.
By macro mode I mean in the camera, you cannot take true macro pics.

Well, just one thing to contrast. Even the xperia s has a "numberous" higher contrast, in real life it is another story. The display is quite bright and colours are natural. Contrast is good enough for meh.

How to know if you have a new Xperia Z1 screen or the old Xperia Z screen

Is there a definitive way to tell which screen I have? I'm a proud new owner of a White Xperia Z1 but how do I know if I have the new Xperia Z1 screen or the old Xperia Z screen.

Short answer actually, you have the Xperia Z1 screen. How do I know this? Because all Z1s come with Z1 screens...
The rumors of there being multiple different screens are for all I've seen just rumors, literally everyone has reported the same panel identifier.

That's brilliant. I'm only asking since there was a report on GSM Arena saying that some models of the phone have the older Xperia Z screen installed with the poor viewing angles. There were scattered reports all over saying that this was true and I was only asking if there was a definite way to tell which screen you had because the viewing angles on mine did seem a little funny.

It boils down to this, either you like the Z1 screen or you don't. That is the only reason there are reports of "bad" screens. It is the same screen, but the users that like the screen report it as being "the good screen" and those that don't like the screen, well, they have the "bad screen from the Z". Why would you need to be able to view your screen from an angle? There is literally no point.
It's so painfully obvious, why is nobody realising this?

I must agree here, this is a pointless thread. The OP should have searched and posted in thread where this has been discussed. I think the screen on the Z1 is more than adequate, yes viewing angles arent as good as other phones, but like myself and others have said, who on earth constantly use a phone at an angle?
Like it or not?
The thing with Z1 Is that all journalists all over the world are calling it the best phone on the market with fabulous screen and picture quality compared to all other top models.
People order them because of the test results.
So when people got them in their hands they get frustrated over the bad screens and picture quality.
We are now 4 friends that are returning them and are trying to find out what units they where testing in the media. It's obvious that it's not the same units that people on the street gets.
They have tested them side by side with units that I already have and I respect their judgement when they say Z1 has better screen and picture quality but it has to be something with the units on the market.
Even a 3 year old can see that it's not the case.
After 2 firmware updates it's still not competitive to other top units. Nobody and I mean nobody will rate Z1 over other top units if they test/compare them side by side in shops. So why did they get the good reviews??
Yes. I'm not happy.
That is because I convinced 2 people to wait and go for Z1 and now they are returnig them too.

Just let me get this straight because I'm not sure I'm following completely. Basically, you and 3 of your friends are returning mobile devices meant for use by one person at a time, because of how their screens look when you view it from an angle which you'll never actually do yourself. Did I get that right?
Have you considered the fact that from head-on the screen is actually ridiculously good? Is there some other reason here or are you just jumping on the "herp derp I can't use my phone while holding it at a 45º angle because the colours get so washed out!" bandwagon? It is literally the most ridiculous excuse I've ever heard for returning a phone which is otherwise (ok, may be exaggerating a little here) pretty much perfect in every other aspect.
You gonna go buy a Samsung with ridiculous AMOLED colours? Or an LG with silly back-buttons and hideous UI? Or maybe an HTC One with only 2 capacitive buttons and no SD-card. Ok, I am being unfair, in reality all of these phones are really good options, but I'm seriously wondering what the actual reason is for why you 4 are returning this phone.
EDIT: The reasons I personally picked the Z1 were roughly these:
Great, robust and premium feel, unmatched (in my opinion) on the mobile market today.
Simple UI with a good feel to it.
Sonys openness to developers, something only really bested by the HTC One.
The screen is great for everything except the viewing angles which I don't see as a problem during use.
On top of all of this, they have managed to make it waterproof!
I'm so happy to hear that you like your unit.
As you can see I have returned to my Note 3.
I guess the reason for returning it lies in the fact that I'm over 40 year's and my eyes need better readability and my old thumb don't like the moment to hit the side button.
I can live with the bad camera in low light, but as I use it a lot for reading documents and technical drawings it's useless.
We have compared it with so many other phones now and actually we can't find one that has so poor readability of the same website.
Why they release such quality is strange to me.
But again, it's nice to hear that you are happy and love your unit.
I actually like the side button better when I hold it up side down. All 4 units have had reboot issues, but not on latest software.
But again, why stick with a new unit when the last one was better.
I don't care what brand I use, but people that defend a poor product is normally married to the brand.
Why is the phone nearly as big as Note 3, but the screen feels/displays like a iPhone 4s?

Let's not comment on each other.
I'm not satisfied but you are.
It's no point in trying to convince anybody to have the same opinion.
Let's just say that I like phones with buttons on the front, good screen and camera.
The screen must be crispy so that the contrast between gray on white are crystal clear.
And that the screen shall be as big as the unit.
Because of that Z1 was not for me.
Other people have other criteria so therefore there are many options out there.

[Q] Moving from HTC One to Z1 (Questions!)

Let me start by saying that I am an avid HTC fan. Been using all HTC flagship devices..but now I feel its time for a change. I love the One, especially the speakers and the feel of the device, but the camera is really bad. So now I was thinking of moving to the Z1...but before I do..I have couple of queries
1. Custom ROM: I ALWAYS use custom ROMS and I am not too impressed with the choices. Either way, since I have no control over which ROM version I am going to get, I was wondering if there are bootloader lock issues, or other things I should be concerned about? Do I really need to unlock boot loader before I install a custom ROM?
2. I read that the camera doesnt work if the bootloader is unlocked..is this still true? If yes, then how do you guys manage?
3. I read the speakers arent that great (and no comparison to the HTC one), but how is the headphone sound? I read that these devices use the same audio chipset and I know PureX audio (or something like that is great) is available. What is the general view?
4. Do I really need to get a case? (I HATE cases...just kills the beauty of the device!)
Appreciate your comments/remarks.

hi i am also htc fan had htc one replaced it for z1 due to purple tint issue
1)at the moment unlocking bootloader causes camera to break and sony might solve this issue in future
2)at this moment happy with the stock and some roms which can be flashed with locked bootloader
3)as compared to htc one not that much great
4)it depends on u r use i found no need of case
I can't comment on any of the ROM questions as I haven't gone in to that yet, but for the others...
Headphone sound is excellent. I bluetooth mine to some Sony MDR1BT's and the quality is very good. Very negligible difference between BT and cable operation. I have a few sets of high end cans and the quality is right up there. Can't say what the cheap earbuds are like that you get with the phone as I haven't taken them out of the packaging!
With the case, I'm 100% with you on that one, I hate cases on phones. However, the anti shatter film that they put on the front and back scratches ridiculously easy. Easier than most screen protectors I've used (also not a big fan of those either). The glass is meant to be very durable, but the film on top is not. I'd recommend a tempered glass set, pretty sure you can get them for the front and back.
Camera will break if you try to unlock, rooting and installing Xperia roms however are fine
Also I am really mad about the camera quality...
You should also know that you won't be having a lot of choices in rom and mode department, if you come from HTC (like me) you will feel a giant hole in Z1 threads...
Speaker is not going to be pleasing in anyway but you should know that this is a waterproof phone, so shouldn't be having high expectations, and finally I don't use cases and this phone really doesn't need one so no worries there

Hi mate
1. We have, for now, just a few custom ROMs, based on CM (PAC) or based on stock which is better solution for now - because we still have camera problem when we unlock bootloader.
And, yes, if you want custom ROM based on CM or anything else except stock you have to unlock bootloader because you have to flash custom kernel and it's possible to flash kernels only when you unlock bootloader.
2. Yes, camera will broke if you unlock bootloader, for now.
But, as you could see, few guys claims that have informations that Sony is already working on it.
Also, what's important is to backup TA numbers before you unlock bootloader.
On custom ROM you can't use X-Reality and you'll lost any chance to get it back even when you go nack to stock - if you haven't backup TA.
You have great tutorials for that.
3. Speaker is good enough.
You have MODs and you don't have to unlock bootloader to flash that MOD.
But headphones that you get with your phone are great - sound is deep and the base is strong and clear.
If you are using professional headphones you'll get even better sound.
4 Absolutely agree with that statement.
Z1 is beautiful device and it would be shame to put "condom" over it.
I bought front and back screen protectors (follies) and just ordered rubber frame for it.
You can buy rubber or metal frame that looks awesome and protect device but your device isn't covered with case and it's perfectly visible.
I would definitely recommed Z1.
I had few Xperia devices (I still have them) and I can say Z1 is the best device I ever had.
Elegant, fast and beautiful.
And....as we are on 4.2.2 and are very, very satisfied, you can just imagine how happy we will be when we get Kitkat for it

Also coming from the HTC One to the Z1 and this is my first Sony, it seemed like the logical choice and it's certainly the best phone for me at the moment anyway, it beats the competition in my eyes.
As for my reaction to the Z1 and it's performance, well i couldn't be happier, i'm not knocking the One, i think it's a fantastic phone and I would still recommend it to anyone.
I'm running a custom rom on my Z1 at the moment, Monx rom and it's superb, i've got CRT off animation and various tweaks by using xposed mod, i'm also running the google launcher from the Nexus 5 and all in all it's a great combination.
Audio, screen, camera, build quality, battery life, functionality and performance are all top notch, well worth the upgrade.
The bootloader isn't an issue as you can still flash custom rom's.

I wasn't very happy with my xperia x10 because of the updates, so I decided to give sony one more try, I come from HTC One to Z1 (Bell C6906), all I can say is very disappointed, the phone is heavy and more bulkier for a 5" screen hard to operate with one hand, speaker is lousy even compared to my old S3, camera is okay but not what it seems to be 20mp, the whites on website is yellowish even with brightness to high compare to the htc with auto brightness (but I don't have the yellow tint on the device) viewing angles are bad I just tilt the phone 10 degress and the color is washed out, I have to look at the device straight on, I keep my htc one any day over the z1, waterproof is just another gimmick, the phone software/hardware is buggy, it reboots randomly and I was on my 2 DOA replacement, finally sold the Z1 I hope sony can learn from their mistakes and make a better device on their next flagship but for now im staying away from their device because all those problems

The Z1 is a stellar phone, the only problem at the moment is development, however once the camera / bootlock issue is fixed i believe that will turn around, don't get me wrong i loved my HTC, but you really can't compare a last gen phone to a next gen phone and that's what these two are, regardless of how old they are, the 800 is the newest hardware available and if you want to compare it to another device then you should only compare it to another 800 (note 3 and G2) pitting it against the HTC One is a little like bringing a knife to a gun fight, it's going to lose.
As for the screen, I have to agree with you in terms of visibility, but then again i don't hold my phone on a slant when i use it so hardly anything to write home about.
As for the Camera, there is a manual mode so I suggest you look into using that properly before you judge it, simply using the automatic option is going to give you an 8MP picture with lots of features turned on to make it look as good as possible, hardly something a person with knowledge of a decent camera would do.
The bugs you mentioned are literally software issues which will be ironed out with further updates and as i said before once the camera / bootlock issue is sorted i have every confidence that they will be rectified.
As for the bulkiness, i actually like the size, i do have quite big hands so i guess it fits me, I did use the phone in the shop before i bought it so i knew it would work ok, i guess you should have done the same before commiting, bit of a rookie mistake in all fairness.
The speaker is a bit of a come down from the HTC One's boom sound speakers but in terms of loudness and with active equalizers on both, i think you'll find that the Z1's speaker isn't half bad and with them both playing infront of me you could hear both, the HTC didn't exactly drown out the sound of the Z1 so again I believe you should spend a little time tweaking your phone to get the most out of it.
The yellowish tint you describe I actually can't say that I have noticed it, but it's possible that your eyes are playing tricks on you as you've come from one screen to another entirely, check out an s3 compared to the HTC One and you'll see that the One appears to be washed out, but this is just a different screen, not worse or better, different people like different things.
Anyway, none of this matters because by all accounts you've sold your phone now, I just find it strange that you would go out and buy one and then find out all the things that you could have summarized in a shop ?
Either way, good luck with whatever phone you pick next, for me and a lot of others, the Z1 is the best of the bunch at the moment, so it's either Samsung's note 3 or the G2, and I do believe that both of those phones aren't without issues and definitely a pair of large phones if using it with one hand was an issue on the Z1.
PS: Lastly, the water proof casing for me is superb, I can use the phone in the rain (i live in the UK) for me it's a great feature and not a gimmick as you say, the last thing you need is something going wrong with your phone, only for the company to tell you it's water damaged even though you have never got the bugger wet before.
Just my two cents.

In real life everyday use you don't notice a huge difference between snapdragon 800 to 600 speed unless you are a benchmark freak, The HTC One doesn't washed out compared to the S3, you can notice the display on the HTC one a lot whiter and more sharper than the S3, I still have both devices maybe u are a defective One? I have tried the camera in 20mp manual mode play around w the ISO and EV setting I still think its not a 20mp camera phone more of a 13, i was able to test the g2 is felt nicely in a single hand use but is the power and volume key in the back is just not so good, I wish I could try the Z1 device here in Canada I went to many shops they don't even have a demo display if they did I would've tested it before I commited buy. As you can read in the forum not everyone z1 device is waterproof when its submerged in water and why a company dont cover water damage on their warranty, if a device is certified waterproof why not warranty it, I'm not saying Z1 is a bad device but the viewing angle is just deal breaker for me since my phone mostly on a table at work I don't always hold the device dead on
I'm personally using a One and bought my wife a Z1. The Z1 is pretty snappy but the screen viewing angles (while sharing video with someone) and sound is a disappointment compared to the One. The water proofing is top notch (tested thoroughly because of the 6 month accidental damage warranty). Anyone invested in the HTC Sense experience will face a few issues initially especially with migrating from the excellent contacts/ phone application in Sense phones. My wife is now using a purchased app to manage her contacts, ex-dialer or something. Z1's running stock rooted with Xposed.
And like others have already pointed out, ROM dev is pretty scarce on the Z1.
Try the 4.4 launcher and other apps on the z1, simply brilliant.
The OK Google voice activation is quality, works perfect an i've even got a scouse accent.
