Worth $300.00 to switch? - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

To those who have at&ts note 3, is it worth it $300.00? Thats how much I would be charged but id also get a free Galaxy 8 tablet. That alone makes me think maybe I should get the Galaxy s 4. Just looking for some opinions! Thanks.

I love this phone even if it has a locked bootloader. It was a big upgrade from the original Note. It's so much faster and the battery life is very nice.

I love my note 3. Had it since the day it came out. Great battery, speed, screen. Great everything really.

Yes! In my opinion the galaxy gear is way over priced, but the note 3 itself is the BEST phone on the market!
Galaxy Note 3....of COURSE size matters!

Got an offer from ATT to upgrade at $249.99 for Note 3 with $100 credit per line and free family texting which is $30 a month for 6 months. Only avail through Customer Relation, and no free tablet.

I traded my 5s for a note 3. I love it. I'm always on my phone because of my job and the battery is bar none

How would I contact them? I would be leaving sprint and going onto my friends account. We would do a family plan.

Call ATT Customer Service and ask them to transfer to Customer Relation Department. I am not sure if you would get the same deal from switching, but it is worth a try.

THE PHONE IS TOTALLY WORTH THE PRICE AND IS SIMPLY AMAZING! sorry for the caps, the phone deserved them haha

What exactly did you say when you talked to them? I tried going through online chat and they wouldnt make any offer.

First of all I've been with AT&T for over 10 years now. Would customer relation give a discount if you threatened to leave? I have a family plan with 2 lines. One is unlimited and one is 2 GB per month. I've already used the unlimited line to upgrade to a S4. Upgraded when the s4 came out so was fortunately to get root plus Loki cwm. Plus I'm truly getting unlimited LTE speed, no throttling what's so ever. Been checking this forum for a while now to keep up with the bootloader status. Doesn't look too good but I would be OK for now with just root. Even that is not a guarantee at the moment with the newest firmware.
I'm ready to jump ship to T Mobile just because of how locked down At&t phones have become. The only reason I haven't done so is because T Mobile's service where I'm at are horrible. Nothing compared to At&t.

I called in to upgrade and told them that other carrier offers Note 3 for 169.99, so 299 is a bit too much for me and asked them if they have any special for upgrade. They transferred me to Customer Retention and got that deal.

Pre-Ordered my HD7

Just pre-ordered my HD7 at MobileCityOnline dot com for $699(unlocked). Not sure if I like T-Mobile and hence I have AT&T, I will stick with AT&T.
However, once they have HD7 in stock, I will get an email and have 24hr to cancel.
Anyone else with lower price that you would like to share?
That sounds like a reasonable price for the phone.
Yikes, that's a fair bit more than I was hoping to pay. I was hoping for around $100 less, if not moreso. I spoke to someone at T-Mobile regarding the phone and while she wasn't sure of the exact pricing she said according to what she's heard it'll sell for around $500 full price, though naturally it'll be locked to T-Mobile. I hope that's the price it winds up being, though I wouldn't mind paying a bit more.
I’ve been considering doing the same thing. I’ve been a hard-keyboard/Tilt guy for a long time, but from what I’ve read, I think I’m now willing to trade the hard keyboard for the large display. But this represents compromise. I don’t understand why I can’t have both.
I’m sure you’ve done your research and confirmed that the device will work on the AT&T network.
Have you made your decision because you feel that the HD7 will not come to AT&T? With a price difference of $500, does the Samsung Focus with the super AMOLCD display not become a contender?
I’m going to have to hold off for a bit and see what happens.
Dave
Doesn't that mean you'll only get EDGE speeds, though? I did that with the Nexus One. Bought it when it was first released and only had 3G for T-Mobile, but I was on AT&T.
Eventually I made the switch to T-Mobile, though. Much better prices and unlimited data!
I believe they (AT&T v Tmob) both have unlimited domestic data. Unfortunately, I missed-out on AT&T's unlimited international data. Now neither offers this.
I would switch in a second if anyone offered unlimited international data. This is an issue of increasing importance as the new OS appears to me to be more WWW centric as opposed to relying on device-based memory. (disclaimer: this is a personal opinion of one who has never used the new device)
Tethering is also fairly important to me, but my gut is that we will see this feature relatively soon.

I'm positive AT&T only offers an "Unlimited" plan that caps at 2GB. After 2GB is used, you're charged 10 dollars per GB used.

I made my decision based on the hardware, and I don't think I like Samsung writing in the front and the back of my phone. HTC(3 letters: minimum) looks better on my phone. I would love to have super AMOLCD on my HTC, but larger screen is more important for me because I like to watch movies and surf the net.
Wow, I was hoping to purchase one directly from T-Mobile and they usually retail their high-end devices at $499. Hopefully that is the case.
i've seen it as low as $529.99 for pre-order
I am torn now.
After some research, I ended up liking Samsung Focus better than HD7. I guess I'll cancel my order and wait until one of this baby (unlocked or AT&T)

Part of it because HTC is having doubts about Windows Phone 7 OS, and is making their cheap ass phones. I am sorry but they just lost my business.

[Q] Which Note to buy, Unlocked or AT&T?

I have seen some of the threads with tech comparisons between them, but I wanted to get a feel from forum members as to what the better purchase is. I currently have a grandfathered unlimited smartphone data+text plan from AT&T, and I am ready to jump ship from my trusty Nexus One. My question is, aside from the obvious price difference, what is the better purchase in terms of user experience and potential ease of upgradeabilty? I will be using it mainly for voice, texting, light browsing, and some note-taking. My hope would be to try to keep the same plan I currently have.
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Would you like performance or data speed? Do you have the money to spend or do you want to buy subsidized with a contract?

Keep in mind if you buy an unlocked international version you won't have warranty on it in the US, unless you purchase an aftermarket one. Also, 3G near me sucks, so LTE would be great since I figure those airwaves are pretty uncongested for now. With that said, I have the unlocked version and love it.

I own both and have been comparing them side by side. On the plus side the at&t version has lte (and boy is it fast), a much better speakerphone (much louder and clearer), and feels very smooth when moving around home screen. On minus side the at&t is a disaster on video playback IMHO. I ran the same video side by side and the at&t is skipping frames. On MX Video you cannot leave it in hardware mode, have to put it in fast sw mode. Total opposite of the international. Google earth loads in about half the time on the international. I find it very strange that its so different. The mail app is better O. The at&t but definitely runs slower.
I have a buyer for my international but I'm thinking I may just return the at&t .

Performance over data speed. I have the money to spend (amazon points!) And ICS sooner rather than later would be nice.
I assume these answers favor the international/unlocked. Right? My follow-up question would then be if I need to change my current plan to get the most out of the unlocked Note. Or can I just keep my current one? Are all of the unloked versions created equal? Or should I be looking for a particular one? Are all of the ones sold at amazon w/o US warranty? And what exactly is an after-market one? Sorry about all of the questions. I just want to make sure I make the right decision.
Thank you again.

if ATT doesn't have your IMEI in their database, they can't detect your phone model. So just call in say you drop your smart phone in the toilet and you have to roll back to a dumb phone now, and you want the dumb phone data plan. It's 15 bucks a month alone, and 10 with unlimited family messaging ( 30 total for the package). I am getting 4mb~7mb down and 1m up with the data plan.
But of course, there is risk involve, and there were people got caught with doing this and most of them were nexus user since at one point at&t got a batch imei numbers into their database. Worst case is at&t will auto bump you to the 3gb/month data plan. and of course, if they start to monitor your traffic, it wouldn't be hard to tell you are accessing stuff on a smart phone.

Samsung CSR's have already said they will deny a warranty claim if you are from the US. There is an Amazon listing that says "US warranty" but I would not trust that to be true. But, I would definitely purchase one that is either shipped by or sold by Amazon themselves, because of their "no hassle" return policy incase you get a defective one. Good luck.
There are 3rd party vendors who will sell you warranties and insurance e.g. Squaretrade. They typically run around 100 for a 2 year warranty and roughly 50-100 deductible.
AT&T LTE just means you can hit the stupid AT&T caps sooner and spend even MORE money. Just get the international.

Death of grandfathered unlimited data

I'm not sure if this has been discussed here or not so I will post it. After June, if you want to continue your unlimited data, you will have to pay full price for the phone. If you take the standard subsidized phone, you will lose your unlimited data. It doesn't matter if your on 3g or 4g. If you want to keep your unlimited data, you will be paying $500-600 for your next phone (unless you buy it used) if you don't buy it before the end of the month.
I have already received confirmation email from Verizon verifying this as there has been much debate about the impact this will have. Basically what I'm saying is, if your eligible for and upgrade, get it now, don't wait, especially if you want to keep the peace of mind of not having to watch your data usage.

this is gonna just come back and bit them in the ass, I will wait it out since I can't upgrade until March 13 anyway and I will see what happens but I will not pay full price for a phone, if I need a new one I will just switch providers and get a better deal for being a new customer and have to play that game, just like I do for cable tv

All depends on how you view the situation since on contracts they're making more money off of you since you're paying more than what the phone actually costs usually and have you locked in for 2 years unless you early terminate it.
Went in and talked to a Verizon rep today and they said I average 7gb a month. If I get the the 10gb data plan I will be paying right around the same amount for my monthly payment.

Ptel Service for $41.24/mo w/ Coupon - Tmobile USA MVNO

The original HOT deal has ended. See below for the latest 25% discount. I've been meaning to post this for a couple months now and kept putting it off thinking that a) the promo was about to expire and b) most people might find this too much of a hassle. I however think this is a steal and I'm willing to move to Ptel while it's this price and switch elsewhere if the deal ends. The joys of using Google Voice means I don't really care if the phone number associated with my SIM changes. If you fall in to the same camp, read on.
*********
Plans
Ptel offers two "unlimited" plans:
$40 unlimited talk and text. First 250MB at 4G speeds then throttled.
$50 unlimited talk and text. First 2GB at 4G speeds then throttled.
Both plans include unlimited international text, MMS, and 411. Also, unlike all other prepaid companies I've tried, Ptel includes conditional call forwarding so Google Voicemail is not a problem.
Promo Codes
PTELG25 = 25% off ($4.99 SIM Card & Free shipping) = upfront cost of $41.24 for the unlimited 2GB plan -OR- $33.74 for the unlimited 250MB plan
This code requires you to buy a sim/top-up card combo each time, unfortunately. I don't see any way to use the coupon code when simply topping up.
Expired Codes
PTELSLICK20 = $20 off (Free SIM Card & shipping) = $30.00 upfront cost
-OR-
PTEL25BRAD = $25 off (Free shipping) = $29.99 Final upfront cost
-OR-
PTELSTUD25 = 25% off your order and free shipping (not really useful IMHO unless you're buying a phone)
Additional Savings (Cashback)
Befrugal changed their policies effective July 2013. No more cashback from them when buying minutes. If you find another site that will do so, please share! In addition to getting their unlimited deal for $30 $41.24, you can get 20% cashback via BeFrugal making the final cost $24 $32.99! BeFrugal will only allow you to cash out after your account reaches $25. For those of you that are new to cashback sites, just know that in order to qualify, you must click through on the cashback site before you go to the carrier's website. I will often open up a different browser, just to make sure I don't mess anything up. For other cashback options, see here:
http://cashbackwatch.com/store.php?store=PlatinumTel
Buying Multiple Months
The deal has been going on since December at least. So, while it's not "guaranteed" $30 service, it has effectively been that for a few months now. Another option to consider is buying several months worth of SIMs if that makes sense for you. Some might consider this to be counter to the premise of buying an unlocked Nexus. My brother is one of those people that thinks buying a years worth of service up front is a bad idea. "I guess it comes down to principle. Buying 13 months is like having a 13 month contract, more or less. I'm not cool with that."
Either way, it's your call. I bought enough for 3 months and as long as the promo continues, each month I buy one more SIM.
Here are more details which I found out from a Ptel customer service rep:
1) You must order a new SIM each time you use the coupon. There's no way around that.
2) The "Activation PIN" that comes with the SIM card can be applied to your original SIM. No need to change numbers each month by using the new SIM they send you.
3) Top-up cards in any denomination are good for a full year, but...
4) Once you activate the card, you must use it up within a certain period of time. For the $50 card, the term is 180 days. Totally fine if you're just using it for the unlimited plan.
Click to collapse
So, the max number of cards you can buy at once would be 13, I think. Feel free to correct me if my math is off.
Odds & Ends
Other things to keep in mind:
They send you a standard size SIM card. It's too big for the Nexus 4 so you'll need a SIM card cutter. Or you can always ask someone at a Tmobile store to cut it for you (if they have a cutter one available). I bought mine on eBay for a couple bucks. EDIT: As of April 2013, Ptel now sells Micro SIMs too (labeled as Combi Card 2FF/3FF).
Ptel has been around since 2001, but only just switched to GSM (SIM-based) service in December. It seems this promotion is their way of drumming up business on their new plans/network.
I've been on Ptel since January 2013 and have had great luck so far. Good customer service. Fast HSPA+ service in Boston. 16mb down. Zero complaints. If you have any questions, just ask.
Just figured I'd give this post a bump. Just bought another month's worth of Ptel service. The PTEL25BRAD code still works. So, $29.99 service is still in effect (before the $6 cashback).
I don't understand why no one else jumping on this? Give it a try people!
Definitely giving this a try. Thanks for the info.

Haha. Well, if my XDA account was a new one, then maybe that'd be a red flag. That and and if I wasn't finding ways to pay nearly 50% what they charge per month...that too. I'm just a penny pinching mf.
It does sound too good to be true though, I admit. I hope it lasts for a while longer. At this rate, the savings will pay off my N4 by September. The only thing keeping me from buying even more cards at a time (well one of the reasons at least) is that it might be nice to have LTE at some point. It's still not clear if Tmobile will allow MVNO's to use that network.
how is tmobile's own unlimited everything for $50 any worst than this? considering you'll probably get better customer service, choice of buying a new phone and making payments, no contract or buying upfront, discount monthly bill if you're a student or have corporate discount, and last but not least like you've mentioned, simplicity?

At Ptel's normal monthly fee, the only benefit would be 2gb of unthrottled service instead of 500mb. With the coupon codes in the OP, plus cash back, Ptel's a no brainer in my opinion.

This is just another option offered up by the OP. I personally think it will work out better for me, but if it doesnt I can just toss the sim and go back to Tmobile. But for $20 I felt it was at least worth trialing. That is one of the benefits of using my N4 with prepaid carriers. I can try out whomever I like or switch plans if I wind up needing more 4G data later on. For right now though I use mostly wifi at home and work so I just needed the data for times in between those two.

My error, I thought I had seen a note on their website about it being throttled back to 3g if I use up the 250mb. Still I dont mind the slower speed for now. And I can always switch up to their 2gb plan if their services is adequate after my test run with them. Thanks for the info. I will try to put a quick update in a week or so after I have had some time to test out their service.

Because PTel's $50 plan gives more data, and with the coupon alone it costs significantly less. Plus you can save even more with the cash back.
If they ever stop having the coupons, then you can always switch to TMobile, but as long as you can save $20 to $30 per month over TMobile, why not go with PTel?
You can get TMobile refills at a discount as well, but I haven't seen any for effectivly 60% off.

Cool. Thanks for the update. I wouldn't mind a proper micro SIM. Didn't do a very good job cutting mine down and I'm honestly worried it may not come out without a fight. We'll see!
Oh, and I noticed they're selling the N4 now too, albeit for $399.

I thought so too but tested out the service this week and it works everywhere T-Mobile does. Plus unlimited phone ,text, and data for that price is amazing. Already bought 6 months worth of cards just in case promo changes. Definitely recommend buying through the befrugal link to save the extra 20%. At this rate switching to my nexus 4 will more than pay for itself.

Just bought another month. Still working.

128gb promo

T-Mobile is now selling the 128gb s6 for the same price as the 64gb...

Samsung needs to stop doing this kind of crap, they will kill the resale value of the S6. they copy designs from the iPhone yet they can't copy the business practices of apple. geez.

This really has nothing to do with Samsung, this is T-Mobiles business model.
Ya, this is getting ridiculous. I wouldnt have chosen the 64gb if i knew th 128gb would be the same price.
This is a recurrence of an existing promo that T-Mobile has been running since the beginning of June, though I think they killed it for a couple of days in there somewhere. I picked up my S6 128GB (non-edge, didn't see the value in paying $100 more for the bit of extra screen real estate) on this deal on 6/7.
Just be aware, they won't honor this in store (though I'm told none of the stores carry the 128GB phones, period), and if for whatever reason you can't order via the website you may have a bit of a time getting customer service to honor it over the phone. I had to go through 3 different phone reps/supervisors to get one who knew how to do it, when the website referred me to customer service.
This phone is not worth $850+ lol but yeah android phones never have and never will keep their value.

With the S6, there is no additional screen area with the edge
Stores will honor it IN STORE on wedneday.
Also , Samsung seperately is gonna give you 100$ back if you buy the 64gb full price (which is already discounted 100$ by t-mobile).
So if you go and buy the 64gb for 649$, Samsung will send you another 100$ rebate

Why would they take it back in return? Take back a used phone for a new one? The only thing you entitled to is some kind of reimbursement via account credit. Call customer service and explain your situation.
But I'm sure if you pay the restocking fee they'll let you swap it out.

For one , buyers remorse lol
They won't let me even do a restocking fee.
I'm over it already
They gave me a 100$ credit to the account instead
Are u sure we can use the T-Mobile 100 promo and the Samsung promo at the same time? Samsung says it has to be full price which it's not the case when T-Mobile has discounted it

No harm in trying. If they accept it and you shouldn't have qualified it's on their heads not yours.
