[Q] display / faded white. - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've gone through the forum but found nothing.
I'm trying to work out if the issue is specific to model or device.
Open screen with a lot of white and some colour.
Eg; stock messaging app in conversation.
When screen is tilted back, display is washed out.
Loses sharpness. Colours dull and fade.
Does not happen on my HOXL.
Does not happen on my mates Ultra.
Colours remain bright and clear.
I haven't found anyone with a Z1 to compare.
Should I be having my device assessed for fault, or does everyone get this?
Also when I plug my charger in, some lines of interference happen across the top of my screen.
These feint lines always seem to be there, but move when I plug / unplug cable.
Not normal right?
-
sent via xda app on my shiny new Z1... oh so stock.

The worse viewing angles are indeed normal but not the lines.
You should probably replace it, aren't these lines bothering you?

screen defect?

I just got a tilt about a week ago and ive noticed that in the middle of the screen there seems to be a purple greenish tint when put against incandescent light. The size of said glint varies in size but i'm unable to see what changes the size. Not sure if its heat or pressure or something. The touch screen works perfectly its just really annoying to always see such an annoying glint.
An interesting discovery is that when i press all four corners of the screen it disappears and when i press in the middle of the little square it seems to spread out. I feel like theres some kind of material or something in the touch screen that is causing this due to pressure. I keep it in a hard case in my pocket so the screen isnt pressed on inadvertently.
I've searched the forum for any answers but i havent seen anything about it. Any response or help would be greatly appreciated. I'll try to get a picture of it up asap but i left my camera at a friends house and dont know when im getting it back...thanks in advanced

Do you see the same "annoying glint" under neon light (not day / sunlight)?
Lots of NOKIA and SONY ERICSSON phones for example get this screen recolorization under direct sunlight - this has nothing to do with the screen being defective but with the plastic above the screen which breaks the light and shows you this colored spots. If you can't see the same spot under direct neon light then this might be the cause.
It is normal that you get color changes while pressing the screen in. First of, you press / bent the protecting plastic and the liquid within the screen which causes the incoming light to break in a different angle, therefore the color changes. (BTW: you shouldn't do that too often, it can cause permanent stains on your screen!).
There sure is the possibility that your screen gets pressure from underneath due bad assembling! If you're still under warranty, try to get a replacement.
yeah you cant see it in day light. but i feel as though there is constant pressure on the screen between the plastic and liquid since the spot is always there and doesnt really go away (unless of course in daylight).
well im thinking im going to go back for a replacement. thanks for the quick answer!

[Q] display problem

Hi I have a small problem with my galaxy and I wonder if it is a common thing or is it a sporadic case. I recently took my galaxy in assistance for the replacement of the screen (between lcd and capacitive glass had a hair) Once again after a while 'I realized (I think that there is a problem from the beginning) that appeared on the display strange signs. Initially I thought it was a lcd problem then I tried to shift the LCD image and saw that signs remained fixed as if they were between display and glass. I brought the phone back in service but they said there were no defects. For sureness (they were very nice) they showed me another galaxy just out of the box and presented the same peculiarities. It seems to me (but I'm not sure) that the first galaxy that I had not had this feature.
If you want to help me try to manually set the display brightness to low and pull down the curtain of the notification bar, or choose a dark gray background and gimme an answer.
thank you
i attach a photo
anyone?
I saw that many people have downloaded the image.
thank you
Can you explain what is so peculiar about it ? I dont see anything wrong with that image . Is it the three orange color curved lines ?? (though that looks to me like a reflection of something).
Are you talking about the red haloing effect around the white text?
Apart from the orange claw 'reflection' in the top right there is nothing discernible about that image.
orange signs are camera lens reflection. I talk about grey zones of images. If you watch closely you notice that some grey pixel zones are different from other. With a kind of green blur.
thank you for your answers
Is this what you are concerning about?

[Q] screen flicker bottom left hand corner

Hi All,
Not sure if anyone else has noticed but now and then the bottom left area of the screen flickers a little. Mostly on non white backgorund.. i.e. Grey. Have brightness up full and the auto dimming unckecked).
Didnt see any other post with info on this hence the new topic.
Does this sound like a faulty unit.. even though its intermittent, or just some sort of glitch.
Any help would be much appreciated.
I have no flickering.maybe its model specific or a faulty unit
Sent from my LT30p using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I have it too, but I don't know whether it's just a faulty unit or something else.
I don't think there's anything "faulty" about that. It sometimes happens on comp LCD screens too, with certain shades of gray, especially when there is color bending betwen different shades of gray.
It's like visible refresh rate or something.

Let me clear up the Yellow Hue problem.

I'm not an expert, my conclusion is based on my time spent with my old Z1 ( defective screen, Sony service center agreed as well ) and my new Z1.
So here goes:
I bought a Sony Xperia Z1 C6902 around the end of last month. After coming home I almost immediately felt like there was something wrong with the screen. The display light seemed to be coming from the sides ( like underwater divers with lights).I had this yellow hue and slight tilts would produce drastic washing out + more of this mysterious "yellow hue" everyone's been talking about. The display just didn't seem uniform. Videos and pictures however seemed to display perfectly. A completely white screen would appear patchy.
After a lot of running around, going nuts and tweeting, I finally got my replacement Z1 today.
Now : Slight tilts DO NOT produce drastic washing out anymore. The screen displays uniformly now .The sharpness of viewing angles still sucks, and there is slight washing out, but only after you're holding it at an awkward angle.
HOW TO CHECK IF YOUR Z1 displays whites correctly.
Do this : Go to your service menu. In your device, open the dialer and enter *#*#7378423#*#* to access the service menu.
Hit Service Tests ---> Display
You will notice the 1st and 2nd screens match the yellow/off whitish tone of the settings menus. ( On a bad screen it will be patchy, on a good screen it will be uniform )
Now tap the screen 8 times
THIS screen will show you if your device displays whites correctly.
(attached pics of my replaced Z1's display test from the service menu )
Conclusion.
There are 2 things going on here. The yellow hue and and bad Z1 screens are two different issues, but not completely separate.
The yellow hue /off whitish color seems to be Sony's color config for the Z1.( check the screen i've mentioned above to know if your device shows whites correctly )
The bad screens are the ones that don't display uniformly and seem patchy ,have drastic washing out on slight tilting ( which in turn, seems to make the "yellow hue" seem worse, making people think they're connected.)
So,
Bad Screen : Patchy when displaying a full white screen, drastically bad viewing angles, not uniform, display distortion on even a slight tilt.
Good Screen : Decent viewing angles, NOT patchy when displaying a full white screen, uniform display.
ALL screens seem "yellow".
Sony's customer service here was SO SLOW and It should have happened sooner but after almost a month, I'm finally using the device I paid for.
Trust your eyes. Don't blindly accept that all Z1 screens are bad. The Z1 has a lovely display.Know the difference between the "yellow hue" and a defective screen.
Best of luck !
When you say patchy are you referring to like uniform patterns squares (pixelated within)? I see these pixelated squares for all colors in the screen calibration and the 2nd color was like very light patchy horizontal bars. I thought it was my thumbprints but no. I cleaned the screen before the test.

Nope, that's not what I mean. When I say patchy I mean a non uniform like display. Almost looks like there's light patches of water on the screen.

Screen brightness uneven -- anyone else?

Folks,
Got a question for you -- as per the title. To give you a little background, I bought an S2 8.0, loved it, and then decided that I really ought to replace my existing "data plan" tablet from the S 8.4 to the S2 9.7. So, good-bye to the S2 8.0, and I've got a new S2 9.7 LTE.
All is well, EXCEPT for some screen oddness. I'll have to post some pictures, but I think I can describe it well enough. To begin with, I don't really like "busy" wallpaper -- I just use a solid-color, medium-to-dark blue wallpaper as my background. What I really notice, both in portrait and landscape orientation, is a darker band at the top of the screen -- again, it happens in both portrait and landscape orientation. It seems to be a "viewing angle" thing, as the dark "top" in landscape orientation doesn't turn into a dark "side" in portrait orientation. Instead, when I move to portrait orientation, then the top of the screen has this dark band, and the sides are just fine.
But I don't notice quite the same thing happening when I get into some apps -- for instance, the yellow/orange top band in the "Memo" application doesn't turn noticeably darker. But the green top band in the "Evernote" application shows it IN SPADES, though it's a really thin band at the very edge of the screen. And, again, it's always at the top, no matter which orientation I'm in, that I see the dark band.
Anyway, that's the most obvious stuff. However, when you back up and take the whole screen in view, what I'm really seeing is A LOT OF COLOR CHANGE as I angle the tablet towards me (more vertical) and away from me (more horizontal). Again, just go into the Memo application, and lay your tablet flat on a table, then grab it and tilt it up towards you -- do you get a big change in color, or does it stay the same? I guess I would say that the "white" color "turns bluish" as I raise the tablet towards me (making it more vertical), and it goes more to a normal white when I lay it flat.
I can understand changes in screen quality due to viewing angles, but that's not something that I associate with OLED screens. I sure didn't see anything like this at all with the S2 8.0 that I had. And I've started looking at S2 9.7 tablets in stores, and I really haven't seen anything like it in the stores. Thus, I'm definitely thinking about returning the thing -- unless it's really a case of "they all do it."
So, if you guys could check out your tablets and let me know if you see anything like this, I would appreciate it. It's not worth taking the thing back and asking for an exchange if what I'm seeing is common, but I'm definitely a bit disappointed in the screen quality that I've got with this tablet.
Thanks in advance for checking this out for me, and for any thoughts you'd like to send my way!

I have yet to see an S2 that can display a uniform white screen. I can always see a light pink/purple tint on a white background. If all you're doing is consuming media you will never notice, but if you're reading anything with a white background it gets too distracting. I don't see any issues with uniform brightness though, it looks perfect from that standpoint.

Understood -- thanks. I installed a couple of screen testing apps, and they show no issues. For instance, I pulled up a full-screen blue that was very similar to the blue I'm using for my background, and it was nicely solid blue. Then I pulled up a full-screen green that was similar to the top of Evernote, and it was nicely solid blue. Then I pulled up a full-screen white, and you could see what you and I have both mentioned -- it does change colors a bit as you move the screen around.
So, it's just very strange what my S2 is doing -- it's like it must have something to do with other on-screen elements. I'll definitely take it back and exchange it for another one, but I'm just trying to get a grip on whether this is happening on any other S2 tablets. And it definitely appears that it isn't.
Thanks for your reply!

I've been checking my T815 a little while ago after noticing similar behaviour. The way I see it, the tab S2 screen is very sensitive to the viewing angle. Not so much in blue and red, but very much so in green. In fact, to get a proper green, I have to look dead on. I even notice a change in the green colour: dead on it's yellowish green, while even at a slight angle it is an uglier green. The first is clearly what the device is calibrated for, because that's when things like skin tones look perfect.
I used the *#0*# menu to test.
I compared this to my other devices. On the note4 I didn't notice this. But that may be because of the smaller screen. On my previous tab, tab77, the effect was also completely absent. But that one has a completely different oled layout.
I've already eliminated display modes and auto brightness as influences. I still have to look into the effects of ambient light, since the displays of my devices do reflect differently when turned off. In fact, under some angles the tab S2 reflects a bright white lamp as pure green. While the tab77 always reflects the same lamp as white.
I know that the tab S2 has an rgb matrix that has two Gs for every R and B. That's probably related to the effect I'm seeing.
