So, I'm an automotive Technician and have a White Verizon Moto X. As you could imagine, I get random oil residue and grim on my hands all the time which makes it's way to my beautiful X. Unfortunately, I've found it to be quite difficult to get it off my X. It kinda stains it. I've tried a towel dampened with Windex to no avail. I'm sort of scared to try anything stronger. Has anyone found a good cleaner or concoction that cleans it well without damaging it?
I'd try a good spray polish. If you're around a Honda motorcycle dealer, pick up a can of Honda polish or the equivalent. I use it for everything and it degreases as well without damaging paint/plastic etc. I won't hurt the screen either.
An automotive technician probably shouldn't have a white phone and expect to keep it white. The design of the back of the phone is such it is going to be very hard to keep clean if grease or oils get on it.
Isopropyl alcohol is pretty good for most plastics, and most surfaces in general. Note that I haven't tried it on my Moto X, but it's my go-to cleaner on most items where I don't want to clean without leaving any residue behind. Certainly better than Windex, which has a huge amount of blue dye in it (unless you're using one of the clear versions), and ammonia reacts with some plastics moreso than isopropanol.
Rubbing Alcohol and Microfiber towel.
Yeah, maybe white wasn't the best choice to keep it clean but I got it for free with a deal and didn't want the typical black phone. I'll try rubbing alcohol when I get home.

I would like to add my 2 cents. Use what works for the body of the phone....but do not clean the glass with anything other than a cloth...it has a oleophobic coating that will be removed if you clean it with alcohol or other cleaner.

I wipe mine down with alcohol pads and a microfiber cloth every night.

Hello fellow auto tech, I'd suggest a full body cover. Honestly the otterbox defender for the moto x is AMAZING and is well, perfect in my opinion. I don't get any drip through and it'd be quite difficult to actually damage it with my/our profession unless I drop it in an oil drip pan. However, get yourself a bottle of goo-gone and spray it on a towel, then coat the device in a SMALL film/layer of it and let sit for a minute or so, then get a slightly damp paper towel and wipe it down, followed up with a good drying towel to capture all the moisture. Maybe even wrap it up in a drying towel/microfiber towel and let it sit in it so it's all absorbed.
I'd say alcohol and microfiber cloth. Noticed screen is little harder to keep clean on Moto X.
Also noticed screen doesn't seem to be very scratch resistant.
Have some fine scratches on it, either from pocket use or from cleaning.

Anyone else who goes caseless have their white plastic bands on the back get dirty? If so what did you use to clean it?
Thanks
Ive used LCD cleaning wipes for both the One & the One X I used to have with pretty good success.

Another person said rubbing alcohol for tough spot haven't tried it but it's generally safe for plastic as it comes in a plastic bottle!
I used a q-tip and pulled all the cotton off so I just had the hard stick, then dipped the tip of that in rubbing alcohol and that let my apply pressure and get it looking perfect again.
But my job gets a lot of oil on my hands so it could depend on what you think is building up on it, for instance that wouldn't work as well for an architect who got a lot of graphite on it...
A small amount of 409 cleaner on a rag works amazingly.

a very light suction tool.
no vaccuum.. maybe a handheld bulb pump, squeeze and allow it to suck the debris out.

I just used a toothpick with extreme care, because there is no soft grill, worked good.
You should try one of those baby noise cleaners, great suction and they're cheap.
I've had good luck with a dry toothbrush and light, quick strokes.
you run the risk of forcing it deeper into the holes.
i'd only use a fine bristle art brush for the edges.
suction bulb for holes.
or just put your mouth on it and suck dry and fast.
ive been using those hand held blow thingys used for cleaning debris out of dslr's
The best way is with a toothbrush damped
In alcohol.
Soak the toothbrush in alcohol and dry it about 90% with towel(semi wet, not too dry, not too wet) Brush the grills, The remaining alcohol will clean the gunk on the speaker grills.

Use a magnet

i forget what it's called, but i like to use the tacky putty material that is meant to be rolled into a ball to hold posters/photos on a wall.

I've had mine at least 5 days before most people on here, and I haven't seen anything stuck in the grills of my phone. Does anyone have any pictures they can show? I'd be interested to see how big of a problem this is.
Some tips from reading this post and having this issue
I have a three week old HTC One and untill my recent trip abroad i had not noticed anything slipping into the grills of the phone on my return from spainI put it in my bag along with a bottle of Liquer and a My babys left over fomula powder... Then i dropped the BAG!
Needless to say the combination of the powder and some of the Liquer made for a horrible thick mess which covered my Phone including filling the speaker grills.
I used a toothbrush and this actually did a brilliant Job, its not 100% but i know if I do it a few more times over the next few days it will clear it.
The trick is as stated above careful strokes in one direction across the grill to drag the dirt out using a brush with fine bristles.
Do not put a Magnet anywhere near the speakers on your phone this can cause internal damage which may void your warrenty. Also the suggestion for using some form of blue tac to do this could also go very very wrong, If the tack is too warm it will stick itself into the grill and that will be indredibly difficult to get out if not impossible dependent on how hard you press down trying to remove the dirt, this can also just force the dirt futhur into your device.
The alchol based methord is also very good but be careful too much moisture and you could damage your speaker if it seeps in so its best to dry a dry toothbrush at first and only resort to some cleaning based alchols if you have dirt which simply cannot be lifted. (I will say formula when turned to a paste is incredibnly hard to remove but as with most things does dry after a few hours.)
I used a simple baby wipe on the phone afterwards to remove excess dirt from the grill once the toothbrush had done the job.
A magnet isn't going to harm your phone...

A strong moving magnet might.
And I've gotten some... I dunno... stuff stuck in my grill, but it hasn't bothered me, usually, it disappears after a while.
Tape?

So I got a black HTC One and barely 15 minutes after using it, it already had fingerprints. But, that's not the problem... The problem is, no matter what kind of cloth I use (the one that came with InvisibleShield, the ones that came with all my old phone's screen protectors, the ones my old cases included, etc...) there's just NO way to clean this b*tch!!! I even thought they were scratches, but that's just impossible, this is the first day of usage it's had and I barely handeled it for a few minutes before putting it in a case... Anyways, those of u using a black htc one or that have had similar issues before, what would u recommend??? Thanks in advanced!!
Try rubbing alcohol and a microfiber cloth.
Hmm, I don't have alcohol right now but I'll give it a go tomorrow cause where I'll be I'll be able to try it. Have u tried it?
I have a silver One, but rubbing alcohol has always taken the little marks and fingerprints off of other metals with black finishes. It's safe for electronics too. Apply it to a small part of the cloth, work the cloth until it's damp and carefully wipe. Don't slosh the liquid on the phone or get it in the ports..

Hmm, will do! Thanks for ur tip, I'll let ya know tomorrow if it worked out :good:
One more thing... It can affect some plastics and leave a powdery residue so keep it away from the sides and antenna lines. I doubt it would affect the plastic phone, but I'd hate to be the guinea pig.
I've heard others have had success using a slightly damp Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. You may want to try that first.
If a damp cloth or microfiber doesn't cut it for you a sand paper delivers a clean slate!!!
LOL

+1 at one point I noticed I accidentally rubbed some on the top antenna strip, I checked my signal and it was still full... Out of curiosity I rubbed the alcohol damped cloth through the whole top antenna strip and nothing happened, then I just cleaned the whole back (except the camera and flash of course) and it's all good still
I have had my white Moto X for a couple weeks now, and it is starting to get some dirt spots on it, which are fine, a magic eraser gets rid of them no problem. My problem is how do I clean the crease/crack where the front and back meet? If the back came off like on phones with interchangeable batteries, it would be no problem, but it doesn't, so how do I clean out the dirt and whatever that has built up in there? Would a q-tip or cotton swab work with some rubbing alcohol?

I clean mine with alcohol and a clean rag. Lightly dampen the rag and scrub away. Go light on it, you don't want it to get inside. Remember, if it does...... (dont) it'll evaporate and you'd probably never know....

Does anyone think that the rubbing alcohol could effect the water repellent coating?
I've heard a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser works WONDERFULLY. They talked about it on the Vergecast one week too and tried it on the show and confirmed.
anyone's moto x come with little dark specks in/on the white back casing? i just got my second dev edition (first one's screen had streaks on it) and now the back has some specks that i can't get off - although i haven't tried magic eraser. but it came like this out of the box. i'm getting super frustrated with this phone. for $700 it should be perfect.
Hi i hope this doesnt sound overly meticulous...but i was wondering is there a household material or a something that safely cleans and permenantly removes greasy, oil like stains of the back cover...i know its a petty thing but i do like to keep my phone shiny like a new nickel lol...any help would be awesome
90% isopropyl alcohol and a good quality microfiber. i have sitting in my room and clean my phones at least daily
I found that fingernail polish remover works too. Found that out when I took the AT&T globe off of my Nexus 6

I find that the smudges go away when I carry it around in my pocket, because of the fabric rubbing against the back of the phone. But a microfibre cloth is probably your best bet in any case.
I've found that good ol' fashioned elbow grease (or: spit on a rag) cleans the prints right off of mine.
Thanks guys I'll try the microfiber cloths and go from there
I recommend a dbrand skin on the back, no more smudges

That's gotta be good for grip.
I have glasses, so I just use a lens cleaner spray and microfibre for all over the phone.
Eyeglass wipes are good.
Lately I've been using those handi-wipes as they are a good degreaser. You know, the kind you get when you go to a restaurant that has messy foods like wings...etc. Usually lemon-scented. Any time I go to a place like that, I always ask the waitress if I can have a few extra. End up with a handful of them. Great to keep in your car glove compartment too. Great for the back of the phone, not sure for the screen though. Might leave streaks on glass.
