When will we get this functionality? The S4 has this option on their app manager wherein they can transfer installed apps to their memory card without rooting their unit. I know for a fact that Sony released the Z1 months after the S4 why didn't they include this functionality on our phones considering it is "premium". I bought the this phone because I trust the brand and I have been loyal to them. I beleive not having this functionality is a big draw back given that we only have 16gb of internal memory to use for app, which is pretty low. I hope Sony can resolve this?

I agree. I come from HTC HD2 to Z1 right now and I am disappointed too. I think the solution is to flash some scripts or even a ROM Rooted.
I start searching.

When I got my phones I thought it was kinda weird with how they link their directories. The storage/emulated/0 etc etc and apparently this is the reason APP2SD is not supported.
It's easy to get around this with apps like link2sd etc.. But for non-rooted I don't know. I just wished it was there officially.
I use Note 2 rooted and I can't move apps even with app2sd apps. (10gb on Note 2 is hardly enough)

10GB has never been enough, In my honest opinion I think 32GB should be the standard for mid range and hi end phones.
Guys Get Fouler Mount it used to work for me on my Xperia S when i had it i have Z1 now and its not working but i might be just doing something wrong. Its a really good app but you need to be rooted to be able to use it.

When I bought my Note 2, they claimed I would get 16gb. When I brought it home and used it, there's only 10gb. So:
1) where's that 6gb?
2)It's not the os. (I'm using Illusion ROM which uses 200+mb while stock needs 1gb)

You are right for that part for unrooted devices.
But if you are root you have endless combination and ideas.
You can even use Xposed modules to tell your camera (stock/snap/better) to store your pict to sdcard.
As I said - I agree with that part - it would be great to have that without rooting but that's the way it is.
I always root my phones - to get adaway and remove that stupid baners from apps

On Xperia Z1 too. We are talking about app data which can be moved to the SDcard instead of internal storage of the phone.
ex: game apk on the phone, game data on sd.
I use GL to SD root App. Needs a fix though. There's a post about it some where on here.

I haven't even noticed the option was missing. Even my old Arc on Gingerbread had the App to SD card option.

really want to get this phone s-off and rooted
need to move so many apps for my gf from phone to SD
sigh....
Same wish here... no sense having an android smartphone where you can only install a few apps. My GF bought this as replacement for an x10mini pro..
Salsa is a very cool little smartphone but... 123mb of free internal storage seems a joke. Install maps + street view, skype(on SD), vtok (because it has not the latest gtalk and can't make videocalls) and you are done.
I would definitely donate for some development.
to be fair i got rid of my desire as i got bored with after rooting and then s-off, i spent time on getting the most out of the phone but then felt what else can i possibly do to this phone, I moved to blackberry bad move then got the mini x10 pro too and felt the phone was a bit of a joke and only got the salsa cause it seemed pretty similar to other phone and has a dedicated button that can hopefully be remapped, The internal memory is pants but it does let you move apps to sd card which saves graze

that depends on the type of andro apps installed some of them can be moved to sd card but not all (go to application settings or run wizard to dump cache/move apps to sdcard)... if only they put 1GB memory it would be perfect
s-off coming soon to htc sensation perhaps next build will support salsa
NOTE:
you may also force unmovable apps to SD card thru ADB, applicable only apps resides on nonROM apps
I was just wondering if anyone has heard any more about a means by which this phone can be rooted. Really, it's pretty much worthless as a smart phone until it can be rooted. You install 4 apps and you're out of memory, meaning email apps stop working properly, the phone runs slowly and text messaging becomes problematic.
I spent good money on this phone and it does nothing really that my old one couldn't do. Make calls, send texts and use 2 or 3 apps at a time max.

I don't think we can install apps on the SD card yet ):
The OS is unix based, you can create symbolic links in the internal memory to point to the External SD card. These links tell the OS to look in the location you specified whenever something requests that folder, pretty much seamless.
There are other tools that have been developed which automate some of this for you, if you are not comfortable typing in a terminal window.
There is already a thread about this, conclusion is that mattiad is not going to be doing an internal2external mod, been using his mod for years and I asked him, told me that without the device in his hands (probably donated as he isn't going to be buying it) it isn't going to be happening, mount points and code are different from the s3 apparently.
I've personally been using folder mount, it's a paid app but allows you to mount the larger games and apps found in android/obb or anywhere from one location to another.
Upped my memory to 5GB from 2GB, I've got about 4 large games and around 100 apps installed so it does work.

Root will happen and there will always be a way around things, the problem Z1 users are facing is a lack of dev's to accomplish these things. Just compare the note 3 forum with this one, huge difference.
The camera bug has obviously played a part in this but it's causing irreparable damage to the Z1 community and has probably put off some dev's we could sorely do with.
Hopefully it'll change withe new releases but as time goes on i'm losing faith to be honest.

Wearing very thin my friend
Hi All, newb here, please forgive my question which can probably be answered by searching, but I am having a hard time deciphering a lot of this...
I have a Note 3 that I updated to 4.4.2 yesterday. It has never been rooted.
My biggest gripe is the SD card restrictions - namely the camera unable to save to SD card.
How can I root this phone?
Additionally, if I decide to go ahead with a new ROM, which ones are available and recommended. The 2 things I would like to retain are S-Pen functions and WatchON remote (i have a samsung smart TV and it works beautifully).
Before this I had a SG3 on slimbean, and loved it. When I moved to the Note 3, I was overall very happy and didn't have a desire to root after installing Nova Launcher.
Thanks!

unfortunately mine won't save to card. It's always been set to "card" but now when i snap a pic, it tells me it can't save to card and it has switched it to device for me.
This is a known issue with 4.4.2 and the only fixes are inserting some new code... which requires root. So I'm wondering how to root.... some say it can be done, other say it can't.....

Here's the weird part -
Last night I pulled the battery and reset... it saved to SD card a few times before giving me the error message.
Today I backed up my SD card and pulled it in preparation of a root that may or may not exist....
Upon reinstalling, it is saving to SD card.
I have it pulled again right now. Trying to root via Kingo, although it's reported not working.
Supposedly Chainfire (firechain? i forget) works, however trips the KNOX detector thing.
Cross your fingers!
Kingo is not supported... Oh well.... was worth a shot

Hi guys, i wanna perform a downgrade back to jellybean because kit kat really gets on my nerves for multiple reasons..
The reason i have not done this yet is purely because i dont want to lose anything i have on my phone, basically I'm looking for a backup programme which backs up absolutely everything i have on my internal storage, including 3rd party apps I've installed and set up, downloaded videos which are stored within apps and everything else pretty much THEN once I have performed the downgrade, to be able to just restore the backup and have my phone identical to how it is now only with jellybean instead of kitkat. Is this possible? Cheers in advance.
Titanium Backup is Good but sometimes gives errors.. I personally use Super Backup Pro it never fails very good for App and other items backup and restore

I was greatful for being able to restore the device ID so apps would just work like before.

Very true, using the non pro version will work but it's a mundane task to have to allow and then install each and every app one after another, very useful if you plan on testing different roms with your apps, the automated process is so much quicker and it'll save you time.
Half way through installing 300+ apps you'll be thinking of that pro key.
Plus the do deserve your cash, amazing app titanium.
When looking into these backup apps including titanium it says I need to be rooted to use the features i want. I'm not rooted and dont really plan to be. It's a shame really because i moved over to android so i had more freedom and control over my device and at first I had as much control as i needed with jellybean (more is better obviously) but the kitkat update pretty much made every sd enabled phone into a poor device. Plus I find the wifi range is really bad on kitkat but jellybean had so much better range. My point is that it's annoying that i should have to root my phone to make it as i want it and be able to toy with the settings when really it should already either have these features or be better optimised. Now I'm wondering if i should just root my phone rather than downgrading it? If i root it can i tweak the wifi range? And can I allow my apps to have better access to my sd card? Also if i upgrade to 4.4.4 can i still root the phone after? Cheers
If you root, it is easier to do on 4.4.4, and you can fix the sd card issue.

Fantastic help from you guys, much appreciated. It's good to actually be on a forum without morons! Lol
Ok so im now possibly leaning toward the rooting route.. Would you advise getting it done by someone in a shop or doing it myself? I'm pretty competent but if it's a risky process then I'd rather it be done properly! Are there any good tutorials for rooting from 4.4.4? Also does rooting wipe the phone memory? Cheers
And any app recommendations for rooted phones that allow me to sort out the sd access problems, also apps that allow me to tinker with my wifi range etc.. Just any good full customisation apps really so i can really get this phone as it should be!

I know it's my decision to do or not .
Honestly , I think it became more a habit than a necessity for most users.
1. First reason
After many years of owning latest smartphones I know very well which application I cannot live without. So after using pathed versions - for a (long) test purpose - just bought them. So - no need to root from this point.
2. Second reason
Stock UI. Been trying many ROM's with good or bad results and realised that there are never ideal custom soft for your mobile. They caused always some kind of trouble. Maybe the reason is I'm getting older and have no time to dig into system, but lately I decided to stick to preinstalled firmware and as the only modification - to change unuseful Galaxy launcher on similar Galaxy one from Play store. So again - no root needed.
And yes - I got my Note4 rooted. There are two reasons I did this:
1. To get a possibility to add any application shortcut to the bar on the right side. I know I can jump between applications by using the task touch button on the left side but I love to use the bar on the right. Much easier for me.
2. To get access to my SD card. From this point root will be always needed I'm afraid.

I've rooted every android phone I have.. The note 3 took me about 8 months of non root use before I rooted to try custom ROMs.. They were great but not essential.
The note 4 running stock no root seems to be rock solid. Produces good enough performance to run anything with ease I chuck at it.. I like root apps. But deem non of them essential in my daily use of my phone. So in my opinion. This phone right now doesn't need root.

So in my opinion i shouldnt root it to make it faster.

It depends on what you are doing with your phone. If you use mobile banking I recommend you DO NOT use root if so use as much protection as you can. With root you basically control anything - change design, control behavior of you device, control it's CPU and GPU, using different ROMs and more.
I've rooted my S4 and with awesome tools on XDA I was able to revert it and with USB jig make it totally unroot without any evidence of change.
It probably will be on Note 4 however Know could be problem.
I use root, I've SuperSU Pro and also I use Eset Antivirus. Mainly I use Xposed and fantastic X-Note ROM. Also what I love about ROOT is backup - simpy in recovery like TWRP.
Anyway it still depends on you what you wanna do with your phone. You can live without it in stock but at least Android 4.4.4. in Note 4 with Stock ROM is pretty junk on RAM.
Just a personal preference. I specifically root all my devices for two main reasons.
1 adware programs
2 hotspot
Those 2 reasons usually are the only 2 for me. The warranty thing i feel like it doesnt matter for me. I use to keep the sprint insurance on my phones and if i had a prob i could just take it and and get a replacement or repair. Sprint hasnt ever told me they wouldnt fool with my phone because it was rooted. I just bring it in with stock software and most of them dont even know what root is. I swap around phones so much now i just dropped the insurance all together because i figured i was paying 130 dollars a year with the rate increase and i wasnt benefiting from it. I hardly ever use any kind of hotspot and sprint makes u pay 20 dollars extra a month. I dont think i use it enough to justify paying that. I can go 6 months easy without using it. Its just those few and far between cases where it comes in handy.
My 2 cents
Sent from my SM-N910P using XDA Free mobile app
I didn't root my Note 1 or the Sony Z Ultra but I've been looking into rooting the Note 4 due to the phone interface being far too large for the size of the phone screen, the Z Ultra was correctly scaled to suit the larger screen so it made the Note 4 feel very cramped in comparison. I've used the adb trick I found on this forum to adjust the DPI without root which largely works well, it mucks up most of the Samsung applications which is fine as they can be replaced aside from the stock camera application which is meant to get the best out of the camera. The only solution seems to be to root it and set custom application specific dpi's although I'm not finding the misaligned camera screen too much of an issue.

The only reason I would really love to root is :
1. xprivacy
2. Ability to use any app in multitasking mode
But still waiting on the new android

How will rooting help privacy?
I was lazy about rooting my Note 4 for a while but as soon as I did I realized I should not have waited as long as I did. There is some really solid, stable, streamlined ROMs available right now. The lag on stock is not as noticeable until you've rooted and installed a custom ROM. Now I can truly say the 4 is a beast.
touchwiz has no lag on stock. turn off window transition animator in dev options in stock settings and your lag will disappear.

No...no LOL...deactivating the window animations always does help a lot to prevent lags. Afterwards everything is much more smooth. It's the first thing I always do when setting up a new phone / custom rom.

I think that's what most knowledgeable people do when setting up a new TW phone. The LOL is because that doesn't eliminate the lag that is there. There is so much discussion about this all over, I don't really want to start it all over again here.
