My phone sent an SMS that I did not send - Moto X Q&A

So this morning I open Hangouts and see that in the middle of the night my phone sent a text message to 2635. The text message body was:
/T:20fa2a57-f8b2-41c8-93d7-15c2b1fa2327/ /R:5294462c0cf29206e34cd1ac/
Can anybody tell me what this is, why it sent, etc? Has anyone else had this or something similar happen?

Verizon, and yes, I'm using Hangouts and GEL.

My phone did the same thing. I'm pretty sure its for the NFL mobile app. I'm also on Verizon. Its done that in the past to verify your service

That makes a lot of sense. I opened the NFL Mobile app last night for the first time, then it tried to verify something that I didn't want to wait for so I closed the app and then disabled it. Thank you very much, I was kinda freaked out that my phone had some kind of malware that was sending encrypted info without my knowledge. I guess it was just crappy bloat-ware instead.

Hangouts shows sms messages that are supposed to be hidden, it intercepts them as they go out, you are not charged extra for them, it goes as far as intercepting voicemail commands on my sprint version so I had to switch back to stock sms app until they fix it.

Confirming this. Very odd. The NFL app should have warned that it was sending a txt but it didn't. Bit scary...

Verizon / NFL Mobile
Yes, it is from Verizon verifying that you are eligible to watch free, live, NFL games that are broadcast in your region and all national prime time games using the NFL Mobile app. Today CBS changed our game from Houston @ Minnesota to Pittsburgh @ Miami so I tried to watch Houston @ Minnesota on my phone and it worked fine.

THANKS for your clear and timely response. I was about to hard reset my phone because I thought it had been compromised!

That freaked me out thanks for putting my mind at ease guys. That's certainly what did it. Super Bowl while in line for dinner. Any good suggestions for identifying applications or possibly root kits etc. And the connections these types of apps tend to use, I intend of contributing to the boards more again. I used to everyday for mobile hardware and Web app development generals. But Im curious if there are apps by which they execute tasks like in this manner which I know this particular one isn't but I don't know the best path for figuring that kind of detection and more advanced feedback results and whos signature database wont be easily corruptible, maybe something more productive and professional but real scan and firewall features would be nice however I think thats why some socks and vpns services exist. I use a couple things. I can't help thinking I'm an idiot for wanting to know what and who want what from my android Mac or Windows device. Instead I could be allowing perms access to apps advertising to stop it but make you vulnerable to the point of someone walking on in and helping themself. I want control over my life my tools and devices, but would settle for doing my best to avoid it from someone else. This is one of a couple weird events. Subtle (what I think are attempts to install $.... yet stood out tremendously at the time. Sorry for etiquette I'm conjuction with topic question a small add on to it and thoughts of others encountering nfl live, any info or comments welcome don't beat me too hard, it's been a working progressive thing for the last year I noticed all these horrible warning signs of the end of true privacy as we know it, since it resonated my interest has grown but maybe my interest has drawn attention like vpns and etc. Idk what to do at this point. Take me back to 1996 and a Circle K with a few dimes and a pay phone if I need you on the phone right now, bad wish for a developer. :]

wht if u never use (hangouts.) & in fact have it disabled on ur phn. do not have a (NFL APP) on ur phn, have never opened one or installed one on ur phn. do not watch t.v. or movies. or sports of any kind on ur phn. have no idea how to cast to anything, nor

Worthwhile AT&T Apps to keep?

Has anyone given the AT&T apps a good try to see if any of them are good to keep?
I see instructions out there on how to wipe AT&T off of our phone, but haven't seen anybody comment on why they're wiping the apps off besides to "get rid of the AT&T apps".
I'm just wondering if there might not be one or two of the included apps that are actually worthwhile to keep.
I know one I won't be sorry to delete is the mobiTV one. I loaded it up to the welcome screen then had to step away for a couple minutes. When I came back it kindly told me my 2 minute trial was up... LOL nice! So yeah, unless it really is an incredible piece of software worth buying I'll be dumping that one at least.
Many if not all require additional fees and subscriptions, despite free alternatives.
For example, the AT&T navigator app is $10 a month, but Google Maps is free.
There's also the matter of principle... the fact that AT&T made them non-removable is a compelling reason to get rid of them.
The only at&t app worth using is the att my wireless app that you can down load from the market place. It lets you keep track of your minutes usage, data usage, and change your plan.

I agree. Funny thing is, that's the only app AT&T didn't preinstall on the phone IIRC. I guess they expect you to pay money for their crappy services by default (or by mistaken clicks), but don't want you to have a way to track it so easily.

You just staited my two primary reasons.
It is disgusting that AT&T forcefully occupies space on lesser phones with pay apps. Just appalling.

I'm not sure if it's an AT&T app, but the music player that comes on our phone is awesome!
I even started a thread asking if there was a way we could extract it or reinstall it after flashing a different rom. Hah. I like it.

This is a Samsung app. We'll get it in new ROMS.
Look at about 1:05 on this video:

Yeah I have to say that music app is pretty nice.
Although I just installed one called "Moodagent" that is kind of neat. Haven't had a chance to fully explore it, but it appears to have quite a few features along with the main interface that's a bit gimicky, but cool. It has sliders that you adjust up or down (Sensual, Tender, Happy, Angry, Tempo) and it adjusts the playlist according to the levels you set. Probably old news to everyone else but interesting to me!
everything that is labeled att_nameofprogram is pretty much useless. the other programs like allshare or instant messaging may still be usefull.
Allshare
If you interest in using DLNA, the Allshare app may be a good one to keep. Although, I have one major problem with it: you can only add 1 song at a time to the Queue. What a pain.
But I haven't found any good alternatives yet.
I opened the 'Where' app, and (stupidly) breezed past some part about a monthly charge if I don't cancel. Has anyone else run into this? And if so, do you know how to cancel?
"Where" does AT&T get the idea they can charge for this?
You probably want to call AT&T ASAP to make sure you don't get charged for using the Where app. Also, stop using the included one and download the free one!
Funny story about the Where app:
I had a Nexus One and saw that Where was on a lot of "best app" lists for Android so I went to the market to get it. It was nowhere to be found. After a bit of research, I found some vague explanation about how AT&T had a deal with Where and that they blocked it. This really pissed me off since I paid full price for the N1 with no subsidy from AT&T -- how dare they block apps? Anyway, I found the APK online and installed it.
Later, I rooted my phone and installed the MarketAccess app. Now I could find Where in the Market and installed it from there -- still free of course. When I got the Captivate, the first thing I did was root it. When I saw that Where was pre-installed, I thought "great, now I don't have to jump through hoops to get it." Luckily I saw the warning about being charged, what, $2.99/month to use an app that is free for every user of every other Android phone? I promptly used Titanium Backup to remove the pre-installed version and then used MarketAccess to download the free version from the Market.
The point is that AT&T is really trying hard to charge extra for things that every other Android user gets for free (maps, navigation, Where, etc). Very frustrating. My employer pays for the service on my Captivate and I will be moving my wife's phone (that I pay for) to the Epic 4G at the end of this month after being an AT&T customer for 7 years.
What about AT&T Hot Spots?
I visit Starbucks frequently and occasionally McDonalds. Both offer free WiFi, but require you to check a box and click a button to agree to terms before using it. I know that's not a big deal, but it is a little bit of a hassle especially if I am not planning to use the browser anyway -- I just want to go straight into another app that uses WiFi.
Since I got the Captivate, I've noticed that as soon as I turn on WiFi while at either of these places, I get a notification that says "AT&T Hotspot Detected" or something like that and I am able to use WiFi without having to visit the agreement page in the browser.
Does anyone know whether this app is required for this detection and agreement bypass to function? I have thought about making a backup with Ti Backup, uninstalling, and testing it but am worried that it might not reinstall properly. Also, it might be handy for finding hotspots when traveling -- making it the only useful AT&T pre-installed app.
ATT wifi hotspot app seems to be useful to connect to Attwifi hotspots without having to manually agree to terms
does anyone have a copy of it ?

I have it and will try to make a backup and post it within the next couple of days. It might be Monday before I can do it, unless someone else beats me to the punch.
Update: I still have it on my phone, but it seems that Titaniun Backup only backs up the data, not the APK. I also tried Mybackup Pro with the same result. I have root, so if someone knows how to extract a system app as an APK please let me know. I haven't searched yet, BTW, so if I find out how to do this myself I'll update this post (again).

I swear they are only doing that to mess with us. While it's not hard to completely remove all AT&T ware, it's fairly simple to hide the apps with LauncherPro.

Bought the App, works great functionally, but I m having an issue with it on my SGS2, its always awake. No Sleep I m on villain rom, and tried uninstalling, rebooting, etc.. removed all widgets, see if it was interfering... same thing, seems like it keeps a persistent data connection open, to accept commands cuts my battery time in half though, or more. Wondering if anyone else experienced that issue? *haven't thrown it on the xoom yet ^^*

Data drops and Facebook app

Had a s#it ton of data drops lately and couldn't figure out why because it want a problem in the past. Seems to have coincided with the latest system update. Anyways I noticed a pattern involving the Facebook app and the data drops (even ruining in the background). Uninstalled the app and once again am data drop free. Must be some kind of conflict between the app and the 905 build.
Just thought maybe this would help someone else out that us losing their mind with data drops.
Btw, Facebook is the worst tech company I've ever seen at coding. Should really fire their entire staff and start over or outsource. With every update the product got worse. (rant off).

I am with you on this one. The facebook app is one of the worse apps i've ever used. With every update it gets slower and slower. It's not the phone or my connection as it happens the same on wifi. Sometimes I am better off opening the browser and going directly to the website which is about 10x faster. Even my brother who is on ATT/Iphone says the same thing. I do not experience data drops like you're mentioning and to think I tried to apply for Facebook -.-...
I hate to sound like a ****, but maybe use a different app? One of my favorites for everthing is Scope Beta
Scope Beta Link
It is an easy beta to get into.
(Rant on)
I have stopped using Facebook altogether, plus they are a huge security flaw in the Android framework. If (and this is a big) Facebook brings their games to Android then I will be forever scared of Facebook. I have seen girls computers contract viruses just from using Facebook (guys also but knowing men we look at porn so we really dont count) the one question I ask them is do you use Facebook games, 97% of the time it is yes.
Like you said also the source code used for the Android app/ iPhone app is complete and utter POS. Which also scares me becasue this code could be used for exploitation. I havent deleted my Facebook yet....It is still on the list lol
(Rant off)
Everyone I know likes Facebook I cant stand it....is why I rant....
28 hours and not a single data drop. Before I was getting probably upwards of 10 per hour if not more under heavy usage. I was about to yell, rant, and cuss at big red to try to get a credit towards a different phone, and then pay for one even at full price if need be. Now I can enjoy this phone once again.
I just haven't looked at using an alternative app yet, but plan to. And fb wonders why their ipo wasn't a big success... Look at the product.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk 2
This is my experience EXACTLY. It's impossible to use my phone, and it feels like it coincided with the latest update and installation of facebook. My phone is unusable as it sits, I will try uninstalling FB and see if it clears up my issue with data drops.
Facebook knows about their app issues. That's why they made everyone get an Android until the problems are solved. They also abandoned HTML5 and will no longer use it.

Coming from Android with a few questions...

I just ordered a HTC 8x (keeping my 32gb SIII for now) from Verizon and had a few questions. I have not used a Windows phone since my HTC TP2 - which I loved until the HTC Incredible came out. Is there an app that allows WiFi tethering - like FoxFi? I don't use it all that much but when I travel it is nice. I am grandfathered in to unlimited so the tiered plans are not an option. I also use mass txt messages several times (13 team members) a week and I am currently using GoSMS to do it. I am hoping there is a similar app that allows mass txting on Windows Phone OS - stock would be great. Does the wireless charging system use more power than the traditional hard wired cables?
Looking forward to WM8 & thanks all for any help!
Currently
On WP8 only way to tether (I could be wrong) is to pay carrier extra fee. I am waiting on another option as well, and as far as mass text you can do that in the groups setting I send out text to 16 people at a time for basketball games and such. And the room feature seems to be nice but I haven't used it yet. There is also http://xyo.net/lumia/ which will tell you what apps are somewhat equivalent.
WP8 -- in settings has an option for internet sharing (no app needed) that provides up to 5 other devices (at least on my 920 with AT&T). I assume that this is a general option in WP8 ...
I have the shared data plan that allows tethering, so I am not sure if networks need to have it allowed in order to use it ...
But, the option is there without the need of an app ...

wi-fi tethering is a built-in feature in WP8 (since WP7.5) - it's called "internet sharing". i have no problem with at&t, using my nokia 920 as a wi-fi AP for my notebook and my ms surface rt. i can even go remotely to my work computer through VPN.
you can create a group, adding anybody from your contacts. after that you can send email or text sms to all the contacts from this group - just by one click.
and yes, you don't need any additional applications for these features.

i've been a t-mobile customer, and now i'm an at&t client. i didn't pay anything additional for using my phone as a modem (through bluetooth or wi-fi, whatever) and i'm not paying now. the only payment you should be aware of - for the data, you use. i subscribed to a data shared mobile plan in at&t - $90/mo for 6Gb shared data (plus unlimited voice and text) for up to 10 (i believe) lines (i use 4) plus $35/mo per device. i pay $225/mo for 3 smartphones and 1 simple phone. we've never overlimited our 6Gb plan. though if you do, it costs $15/1Gb.
the room is a cool feature, but it works only for WP-phones. but as i said you can group your contacts to be able to email or text all of them by one click.
I think on Verizon unless I am on the Share all plan I am not allowed to use the wifi/bluetooth tethering. At least without an app like FoxFi. Speaking of contacts... how are they managed on WP8? I will go out on a limb and say iCloud is definitely out and probably so is Gmail... hope its that easy.

the only way to avoid lockups is turning off these phones.
I don't think I've had a lock up or app crash on Windows Phone. They were all too common on iOS though.
But can we leave all the playground arguments over best platform to some other forum? they're only phones at the end of the day.

You're the first person in this thread to mention best platform, no one is arguing.
Crashes are present in Windows Phone as well, but are less obvious as the system simply closes down the app without saying a word.
In most cases, crashes are due to the poorly written app and not the system.
Although I have a killer wifi and university that restarts my phone lol.

After reading several of your posts, I still can't figure out if you are a WP8 supporter or not.
Either way, I have been on Android for my entire cell phone career for several years and most recently had the GS3. I can't even tell you how many force closes I have had from apps, lag and slowdown because of horrible resource management of the OS, dalvik cache slowdown, etc. I rooted all of my devices and was heavily into the technical side of things.
I never had an iPhone but have played with many. Never was my cup of tea, but I won't talk bad about it since I simply don't know enough.
I finally grew tired of it all and purchased a HTC 8X last week. I can tell you that WP8 OS is such a breath of fresh air coming from Android. There is absolutely no lag or slowdown whatsoever....ever. I can pop in and out of apps, do whatever I want and it constantly stays smooth. No ram dumps or reboots required. I also have not had a single force closed app or random reboot like some people have reported. It has been an absolute flawless experience so far.
Just thought I would post some positive energy after a lot of negative. Is WP8 a lot more simple than Android? Yes. Is it a bad thing? No. It's such a seamless and smooth experience that I'm not sure I can' go back to Android at this point. At least not for a while. YMMV.
You quote me why? Who was negative? Just stated a fact, dont be so defensive.

I'm not being defensive at all. Just stating my opinion based on your quote. The other reason why I quoted you is that I've seen you all throughout this WP8 forum sort of talking down on WP8. Just curious as to why and which side you are on. Not saying you have to pick a side or you can't talk down on WP8, but just curious.
What have I said down? That it lock ups? Is that a lie? App crashes? Is that a lie?How about random reboots? I could go and mention a host of other things but there is no point.
So don't quote me with baseless rhetoric.

Anyhow, my bad. At the same time, my experience with WP8 that I posted doesn't change. I'm loving this OS so far! :good:
A ton of folks are, enjoy it. Don't take this stuff seriously, it's just a phone at the end of the day.

Insane data use

Hello, I'm having problems with the amount of data used on the one. For me normal is around 20mb a day on 3g use. Now I have this..
How is this possible? Is there something wrong? I only have 1gb data and from the first of June to the fifth I have used 250mb..

Only thing I can think of is blinkfeed. Do you have autosync on?
Youtube and streaming music takes up a lot as well.
Only on wifi..
Is it possible to have so much data use just by checking software update? I did that a couple times..

Have you got any auto photo backup services switched on system, dropbox, googke+ etc? If you take Zoes on this device you get all the jpegs and the videoclip uploaded which can be a huge amount of data

No, I haven't.

Just today it used 87 mb.. Could it be weather related? My htc clock refreshes every 6 hours, but for the blinkfeed weather you have to turn on sonrthing in location settings. Turned that of now. But it seems very strange to me. Is it not possible that I did it myself because I checked the software updates a couple times? Then I at least now where the problem's coming from.

Get 3G watchdog so you can see what each individual app uses.
check with your provider to see if it matches. the phone could be reporting inaccurately.
Watchdog can't help me on this one.

I am having a heavy data usage problem as well. I use my phone to listen to music on my motorcycle, streaming GMusic.
My buddy has a Note II, I have the one. We both streamed music from Gmusic all day, same amount of time. Both of us have "high quality" turned off (unchecked).
At the end of the day he had used 100MB, I had used 873MB!! (reported as being used just by Gmusic). Both phones are on the same account so I login to AT&T to check data usage thinking it had to be a flaw. Nope I've used .9gb his phone says .1gb. WTF?
I still haven't figured it out and have used most of my 3GB in one weekend. Suckage.

Why don't you take a look at Settings>Usage to see which apps are actually using your data?
As I said, Android OS is using this. No further details in there

I've had similar things happen with a couple of HTC's, not Ones. I only worked out how to stop through trail and error and I still don't understand why it happened. What I discovered was that the Mail accounts were constantly eating into my data (140Mb + one day but only 3 short emails actually received into the mailbox). The way I resolved it was to delete the Mail accounts (POP or IMAP, whatever) and then add it as new. This seemed to solve the problem. Never worked out why it was doing it in the first place mind.
The OP says its Android OS, which it could be. But there would be no harm in trying to disable/change apps and accounts to see if makes a difference. And if not methodically you should be any to ID the problem. Fingers crossed.
