Use this guide The best solution to resolve your problem would be to remove junk from your Internal SD card by formatting it, which should be done after you have saved all its contents to your PC for salvaging what you may need.
Its best to climb the ladder step by step, so is upgrading, so from gingerbread > ICS > JB > KK, would be the best. You don't have to use it but just boot , THe above guide has every details to achieve that. good luck

[Q] update for rooted captivate

ok ... i guess i should say that yes i did "search" about it and i just didn't find the answers that i was looking for ! that's why i ask it here..
so i rooted and apply the lagfix to my samsung captivate. now everytime if go to setting>software update . it just says that "no firmware" or "dm initialization is not ready" ! i know there is no update available for samsung captivate yet ( im on jh7) but when there is how can i update ??!!! and is it safe to update ? how do i restore back to original setting ? (sorry i used iphone for so long and i am still not used to this phone yet ) what i needed to know is how do u restore this phone if something goes wrong ?! i messed up my iphone several times but it was no problem ! all i had to do was fire up itune and hit restore...!
Are you using the voodoo lagfix? If yeah..then you would want to disable that and restore a stock kernel before you do any future updates. Then reinstall it after. If something ever goes wrong with your phone, you can always put the phone in download mode and flash a stockRom with odin.
Well eveytime I check for update it said no firmware . It doesn't even go to menu and say checking for new update from att server and all that ! Is that normal ? And I don't know what lagfix I'm using. I download it from here and it has a shortcut with the name of SL4A and I installed the lagfix-ext4.sh from its options

I am new to the Android world and just got a Captivate rooted it using UNLEASH THE BEAST V0.2 from this Forum.
Now I cannot update the phone with the new AT&T fix and could not find a place explaining how to do it. I read the tread above about restore a stock kernel, flash a stockRom with odin.
Can someone be kind to explain that and maybe put a link up of a tutorial.
I would really appreciate that and hopefully get my phone updated.
By the way my firmware version is 2.1

That is the Odin one click downloader- it restores your phone to stock, make sure you make a back up first because it WILL erase everything in the process. The thread should have adequate instructions as well
Zilch25 I will do that. I appreciate your help.
Thanks
Worked like a charm! Thank you

[Q] How to get Android 2.2.1 update on Galaxy S

Hi,
I recently upgraded my Galaxy S to Android 2.2 via Kies... Now the Baseband Version is DDJP2... Is there anyway through which I can update it to 2.2.1 using KIES ?
I have not rooted my phone till now (and no idea on how to do that)... and no idea on Flashing the ROM as well...
Should I root my Phone and Flash the ROM? In that case, what will happen to existing data in the phone and apps ?
Also, need step by step guide to Root and Flash the ROM....
Which one is the most stable ROM for 2.2.1 ?
Any suggestions and thoughts?
P.S: I have been Symbian user for years... This is my first android phone... These questions may be basic...Pardon my ignorance...
Thanks,
Guru

Only if your network has it .

[Q] Rooting I-9000

Please see post 3 for the 'worse' update
-------
Hello,
Just a bit of background - have had my galaxy I-9000 for 1-2 years now, had been running dramatically slow, so upgraded it to 2.3.6 (GINGERBREAD.XWJW6) & it runs a lot faster. Unfortunately, it has many more "optus apps" which I detest.
I'm looking to "reboot" the phone - which from reading some threads means "rooting" the phone. My questions relating to this are:
1. If I 'root' the phone, will my contacts/messages be retained, or is it a complete wipe of the phone
2. How exactly do I 'root' the phone? Is there a thread that shows you (I've seen threads, but they are technical, & I become confused when they start mentioning roms etc)
Furthermore, as far as I've read, after you 'root' your phone, you have to install a ROM, for example "SLIM ICS" (what's ICS stand for?)
I've also read, but I'm not sure that because the firmware I've upgraded to is relatively new - that 'rooting' is not yet available? Is this also true?
Thanks for your help =)
1. Rooting doesn't wipe anything. Maybe cache or/and dalvik cache uf you flash with cwm.
2. Look for cf-root kernel thread.
There is a step-by-step guide and the needed rooted kernels.
You will need, Odin, the kernel.tar file and the phones Downloadmode (volume down + home + power)

Hello again,
Well my phone seems to have shat itself? It comes up with the "black screen of death," but I have been able to get to the downloadable screen.
I wanted to know how to recover it, I am no tech wizard, but this is the stuff I have:
- ODIN v1.85
Please tell me what else I need, I'm guessing a ROM?
I will be forever grateful, thanks
if you have the download mode, you have to flash properly the GB JVU, then to flash the CF root for JVU to become root and have access to CWM. then you can upgread to ICS
---------- Post added at 11:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:08 AM ----------
here the link for jvu
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/xxjvu/
good luck
Thank you!
I'm following it step by step (downloading the XJVU 200meg file at the moment)
I will let you know about my progress
you need the three files, for phone, pda and csc. And you also need the pit file, and the cf_root file.
So an update!!!
Black screen of death, diverted!!! (phew)
Flashed to 2.3.6 XXJVU
Rooted it as well
Now looking for a ROM to put in...
Now because I'm on 2.3.6, does that mean I can only get the "SURFACE" ROM? What's the advantage of changing ROMS anyway?
Cheers

If you want to flash slim just go to slim website, and follow the instructions, take your time, and make sure you read and follow the instructions, any problems then post on the slim thread, I will keep an eye out for you
I'm glad for you thiolus. Cm9 or slim are good. I'm on cna by franzy and i think it's a very good rom on ics
Another update guys!
Well I flashed it, then rooted it (see now I'm using proper lingo =P) XXJVU
Then finally put on CM7 which makes everything faster, for now I think it is okay, although I think I will update it later as I want more whizzbang!
Another problem I encountered was getting all the contacts, kies saved as SPD file which wasn't recognised - had to save it as VCR/vcard file, then merge all of it together into one file - I learned how to use DOS too!
So literally 8 hours later (slept at 430 am, now its 730 =P) this is it for now, thanks everyone for helping so much

flash a rooting kernel, either CF Root JW6 or semaphore GB from My Android Collections

Going from stock 2.3.4 to ICS

Hi people of i9000
I will be receiving a second hand Galaxy S one of these days. Now check my postcount, and the fact that I had more phones than some people change underwear in a month, but I don't want to mess up this phone.
According to the owner the phone has --> 16GB, Android 2.3.4 with I9000XXJVQ
Knowing my history I will get the phone, boot it ... and flash it after 2 minutes.
I have 4.04 on my S2 and I like it so I want to move to a rom with that version.
Now I've checked the stickies but it seems (maybe because it is right in front of my nose) that I can't find any thread that deals with this directly.
I will need odin for sure but then it gets a bit blury for me.
Anyone willing to point something out for me?

It should be a simple progressive upgrade
1) update it to 2.3.6 Firmware, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881 according to your region First
2) Add a Kernel with CWM, like a semaphore kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112908
3) USE CWM recovery to flash ICS 4.04 ROM of your choice from SD card
I doubt you need a guide on basic flashing procedures

Ok thx that looks like it!
Well if you know I had a Moto Defy and a HD2 and all of the others. It's all alike but some have had their funny stuff.
missed the kernel part which adds clockwork in this case.

[Q] ****ed my spare i9000 when trying to upgrade the ROM

It was running CM9.x and I figured since there's a stable CM10.x out now with jellybean that I'd upgrade it. Was going to give the phone to someone who had a POS Huawei for free.
I've somehow screwed it completely. I can't remember what I did either lol. Can someone help a brother out here? When I turn it on it does this:
s23.postimg.org/id3rqwrsb/Untitled_1.jpg
^^ Can't post it as a link apparently.

You have wrong CWM for upgrading to CM 10 ( no idea how you managed to do that from CM 9), you need to upgrade gradually, so go here and start from gingerbread stock ROM and step by step to CM10 would be the correct way without problems . Read everything, than proceed once you understand it.

Thanks for the quick response!
Okay, I saw the guide previously. Could you tell me if my train of thought here is correct? I get ODIN, download the appropriate gingerbread fw for my version of i9000 (I think its just i9000 actually), and use ODIN to flash that on? Then from there I work my way to CM10? Have I got that process right? Because it seems like I may have screwed up the file system from what I am seeing on the screen. Will that get fixed if I follow the process I've just written? Thanks!

yes you got that correct, all the download links are given in that thread and respective upgrade you want to do, so it would be wise to use the PIT file as mentioned in the gingerbread section ( since you say you might have done things to the file system) ...so, simply follow it and you should be good to go
