I'm used to running recovery backups and titanium backup to get my apps and data backed up.
how do I do this on 4.4 without root? I'd like to try running a factory reset on my moto x to see if I can fix the active notification unlock lag but don't want to lose everything (photos, progress in games, app settings)
thanks
You can use this or something similar to back up your app settings and saves.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...m_medium=organic&utm_term=app+back+up+no+root
As for pictures you should back them up manually over USB.

it says in the description that it does not work with motorola devices...have you tried?
It works with the moto x. I've used it a number of times.
Though, it has many short comings compared to titanium.
1) you need to have it connected to a computer in order to use it. There is a desktop client that must be installed.
2) not every app is supported... But the car majority of them are.
3) if you don't want to back up to a cloud, then restoring is a pain. If you want to do a local backup then you need to jump through some hoops...
Overall, it's better than nothing and now that I got it figured out, it's quick and painless... But it's definitely not titanium.

I did a TB on my contacts in my phone, and a few other things like sms messages etc. When I updated to the 4.5.3 cognition from 4.3.1 it says it restores the app, but when I go to it...it did nothing. No restoration of any data. What gives?
Also im getting used to all this flashing and stuff, but the modem thing is new to me. Since the search feature isnt working I wanted to ask a question. My phone usually has about 3 bars and I used to get excellent internet speeds. NOW all I get max is 552 kbit/sec. Its so slow its irritating. Will flashing the modem help?

So you used TiBu to restore and nothing showed up? Did you try to restart. I've noticed when you restore the green items in Restore system/user apps, (the only things you should restore from that selection, using restore user apps is just fine), you need to restart the phone to have things like txt messages show up.
Those things are considered system data and should not be restored from TiBu when switching ROMs. Only app data from apps you installed are considered safe to restore with TiBu.
When I do a restore between roms I have found that sometimes I need to reinstall TIBU from the market and then run the recovery.
A couple times the TIBU that came with the rom didnt work. Reinstalling TIBU has given me consistent results anyways.

THat super sucks. Why give the option to back it up, when it wont back up?
I sure lost a lot of phone numbers =/
If its just apps then I really dont need it. Cause I know the main apps I use.

I've had a lot of success using Google contacts in backing up all my numbers/addresses, ect. You just sign into your reflashed phone, sync, done. Importing contacts any other way never really worked consistently for me.

A simple solution to you problem.would be to install GOSMS PRO and use the SMS backup feature in setting then after you wipe and flash something else you can just restore from the app also the modem depends on where you live but try JF6

Your problems are simple first of all the contacts aren't syncing to Google is because they are stored on the phone or SIM CARD
What you gotta do is two things first of all go into the contacts app and hit the menu button them tap import/export. Export them to your sd card then hit the more button in thee contacts app then go to settings after your in there click save always to google then copy the exported contacts file off your sd card onto your computer them import them to google website

Backing up apps with TiBu is very helpful. Especially with apps that save data, Like Angry Birds. Would you want to lose all your game progress? Without a TiBu backup you would get any paid apps back from the Market, but not any data they created while using them. Some system data can be restored from TiBu, like Contacts and BT pairings info, but only if your on the same ROM base. For instance, when I upgraded from Andromed 1.2 to 3.0 I was able to restore almost all the green system items without issue. When I switched from Cognition to Andromeda and did that the Contacts and dialer apps would force close because they are different and that system data corrupted the apps.
Use titanium for user apps/data only.
SMS Backup & Restore is your friend for sms
And for contacts, always save them to google.
Every night I get a notification from backup assistant that it's unable to connect to the network and will try again in 2 hours.
I would like to uninstall this app but it doesn't look like that's possible without root.
I can't even figure out how to turn it off though or fix the nightly error. There doesn't seem to be any real options for it.
Any ideas?
I didn't have this problem before I performed a factory reset on my phone. After I did a factory reset, the backup assistant insisted I gave it my info. It hijacked my homescreen and is now an always-running app. I get that error every night.
I was thinking maybe a factory reset would fix the phone? That seems like the only option right now.
go to accounts in the phones main menus/settings/accounts and see if you can disable the sync there.

There's no option to disable it. The only think you can do is change the time of day it tries to backup.
I don't even get why they put this on the phone. It looks like all it does is try and backup your contacts which is pointless since they are all already backed up in your google account.
Don't seem to have this issue but you can add it to your task manager auto end list, enable system/core apps in settings and u can see it then add it.
-smc
Edit:
Maybe not, can't add system apps it seems.
Do you use backup assistant? If not, now that you can root, freeze it.
B-)
I did freeze mine after rooting with Ti. Rebooted and no problems.

I've just read we shouldn't be uninstalling/freezing too much stuff until there's a way to recover from a soft brick.
Yes, I've read that too. I tried anyway. No problems (well one, not a show stopper) with the ones I did. Rebooted and everything.
B-)
The thing that stopped working was already mentioned in the rooting thread.
<quote>
I froze that one. I'm not sure if it was the issue but my quick dial contacts would not function.
</quote>
I ran into that too. And believe it or not, it was the Yahoo! Mail Authenticator 2.3.4 that stopped that feature from working.
B-)
The interesting thing about that one is that once you use the quick dial contacts, you can re-freeze YMA until you reboot the phone. So I booted clean, and listed my running apps. Used the quick dial contacts and re-checked running apps. Turns out an app called "Contacts Data" is what requires YMA. I suppose it may not be YMA specifically, It could be that it requires at least one authenticator and I may have disabled them all (accept google mail)
B-)
I've been trying to post directly to that thread, however, it seems I don't have permission (developer thread). Hope whoever was looking see it here.
B-)
Before I even begin, I was a nub didn't know much about rooting and did it anyways. I suppose I have learned it the hard way and now I must pay.
I rooted my phone and everything went fine.
Before knowing much about Titanium Backup Pro I instead of "freezing" application I have accidentally deleted some apps that I shouldn't have.
When I say my phone is messed up I don't mean not "operational"
I can still use it for day to day but for instant.
I deleted backup manager and now I can't even restore my backups from verizon online.
I also when I try to call somebody from my contacts list I get this error
The application Contacts Storage (process com.motorola.contacts) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
I have random errors like that all the time.
I have unrooted and did a factory reset but to no avail.
Is there anything out there that could help get my phone back to the way it was when I received it?
I know its my fault for not learning but there must be something out there
Any help is appreciated.
When you first rooted, a backup is usually created. Go to your recovery and look for backup and restore and restore it.

Thanks for that quick response, could you be more specific about "Go to your recovery and look for backup" Where do I exactly go. Went around settings but couldn't find backup
There is no backup unless you made a backup.
And there's no recovery mode on the Droid 3 yet either.

I requested before, but i think the thread got moved or removed to be redone in devl section... Can someone post a backup from Titanium BackUp of the stock apps that will be needed for those who have gone Delete-happy and removed some wrong stuff?

Thank you for the responses guys.
I have played with it but I can honestly say I have not been able to get it to work.
I have tried following the instructions, even bought Root Explorer but can still not figure it out.
I attached a picture of the error. I just can't seem to do anything to get it fixed. Also I was attempting to re-install backup manager without success.....
Anybody that can help out? Is there maybe an easier way to get back to defaults maybe somebody have an image or something of a stock operating system that could be copied? sorry I have no idea of this stuff yet still learning

Ok here is what I do. Let me know if I am doing ANYTHING wrong at all.
I load up root explorer and transfer my backupmanager.apk and .odex from ex-sdcard to /system/app
then I change the permission to r/w
press and hold the file and go to permission. There I set Owner to Read/Write and Group, Others just have read privilages.
Hold the file again. Then I scroll to the bottom to change owner and group to 0 - root...
Reboot...
The program doesn't appear in my apps? Anything I did wrong?
First off, you are doing it correctly. However, I'm not sure if backup assistant is even an app you can launch from the drawer. You have to launch the "My Accounts" app. Second, you can check if it worked by going into titanium backup, and looking for the app. If the name of the app is in red, then you did it correctly.
Hey thanks for that reply! I have looked into it and like you said, it was there in red but now I can't find the my accounts app all I can find is the my verizon wireless app and our doesn't have any backup functions from what I can tell.
Let me ask you this since you seen to be pretty knowledgeable. I have all the apps on my computer from that file above! Would I be able to just copy paste them with root explorer to /system/apps and then do a system factory restore would that work? Or do I have to manually find the apps I stupidly deleted and do it one by I've like I have been?

If you can't find the app, just go into Settings>Accounts.
As for your question: Unfortunately, it's not that easy (I would know, that's one of the first things I tried when I was fixing that contacts bug ). You would have to set the permissions and owners for every apk and odex file from the system dump. However, that contacts bug should've been fixed if you reinstalled those yahoo apps the same way you reinstalled the backup assistant.
Btw, you do know that backup assistant is pretty pointless since all of your contacts are synced with your Google account, right? People have reported no problems when removing the backup assistant app.
And thanks! I'm no android guru like many others here; just trying to help others with a similar problem that had me stumped for a good hour.
Thanks again. I've located the app but it still gives me troubles and not bein able to sync with the online server please call *811 or something like that. The only reason why I care its because I actually did backup all my contacts to the backup client but couldn't get them back on the phone now! I figured it out last night with syncing to gmail and it worked but still trying to get it back to normal. I will just have to do the rest manually haha! Appreciate it a lot!

I got that error message even without root with all of the system apps in place. Backup Assistant is just a poorly-coded app.
I'm pretty sure you didn't do much damage to your phone. I mean, as long as you didn't remove any other authenticators or other apps that blur needs in order for it to function, you should be fine just reinstalling the yahoo apps I told you about. After all, that looks like it's the only error you're getting.
And no problem.
Alright so now I need urgent help!
I went through the entire applications that I was missing and I gave them all permission etc. Rebooted my device and now I am stuck in this screen.
It's an endless loop because I get the error message and can't exit out of it.
Anything that can be done at all?
Haha, oh wow. I knew I wasn't the only one with that problem. Accounts loved to crash on me whenever I reset my phone. You can fix this one of two ways: hold the search button on your phone until it launches voice search. Say anything; as long as it launches the browser, you'll be fine. Once the search is performed, search for an apk for another home launcher. The accounts app basically hijacked your home button, so you'll need another launcher in order to get your home button back.
The second way involves using the desk dock. If you have one, then go into productivity mode. There should be an app drawer there. Open up the market, and install the launcher of your choice.
Once again, I had this problem even before root, so I'm not sure what the cause for this was.

I don't know what I would do without you lol... I was searching google like wild for droid 3 recovery but there is literally NOTHING out there.
Also let me ask you this. If I do a factory reset. Do I have to re-do the whole application proccess to give them permissions or should they be right now
Once it's a system app, it will always be a system app, even after resetting the phone. You should be fine.

So I tried doing the factory reset. Everything went smooth and I was hoping that my phone would be back to the old phone.
I am at the Welcome to DROID 3 screen. Tap on the little green guy, get to the motorola screen from before and same damn error. Except this time, I can't even try to use the voice or search buttons, none of them work.....
What now? I feel so stupid right now
so like always I get my phone from verizon and there are just LOADS of apps that I don't want and will never use. the first thing I usually do is download my browser of choice (xscope) and then I will go into an application and click a link or an ad. you are prompted with a dialogue of which of the browsers you want to use to open I chose xscope and tick the box that says use this as default. I am then safe to un install the stock browser and not run into any problems. I also took out the ones I knew wouldn't interfere with anything like netflix, blockbuster, pre loaded game demos.
my question is , is it safe to remove these moto blur applications, I never use facebook on my phone, I don't twitter...they're wasting space and I'd rather just get rid of them, but my last phone was the moto droid 1 and it didn't have any of this blur bull****.
so are there any complications if I remove my facebook or twitter apps then I click someones facebook link and my phone explodes because it cant find the moto blur app? Also can I get rid of the backup stuff...and Im not sure why...but Gallery has been replaced with 'my pictures' and it has that ****ing red thing on the top which indicates it will upload these to my verizon account....uhhh no thank you....do I have to keep this or can I just install an old gallery and make that default?
I wouldn't remove them, just freeze them. Titanium backup pro is a great tool and really worth the money. There's a lot of apps that can be frozen and not cause issues, check the Android development for the Droid 4, there's a thread about which apps you can freeze. Removing them can cause instability with the phone, and no sbf files have been released

Can't I just unroot it? I know none of the retards at the store will be able to tell the difference...but I figured I would use the Droid 4 Utilities seen here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1492843 and just unroot it and give it back? you think it will work?
I have a message that randomly pops up on my N6 that says "Database backed up to SD card". This actually happened on my Nexus 5 as well so this is really my first place to start as I can't find anything online about it.
I am stock, not rooted. I don't have any AV software or back up software that I know of. I don't sideload and don't run any non market apps. I can't for the life of me figure out why this message shows up and don't run any janky apps that I would normally do this.
Nova Launcher Prime 3.3 is the only thing I can think that might do it. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this and a solution of how I could narrow down what is doing it?
Thanks in advance
P.S. - I'll *try* to get a screenshot for future reference. The message always appears at the bottom of the screen in white letters
