Hi,
I'm thinking about picking up a Dev Edition Moto X to use on T-Mobile. I'm currently on a Nexus 4 and do not have any tethering services. With my Nexus 4, I cannot tether on Android 4.4 unless I root and customize a system file. I'm curious if anyone else uses the Moto X on T-Mobile and has been able to tether successfully via a user agent change on Android 4.4.
So far, the threads I've seen are related to modifying Verizon Moto Xs to allow tethering.
Thanks.
Anyone on T-Mobile and tethering with their Moto X?
Yep. Using easytether pro currently. No root needed and works perfectly

The Nexus 4 on t-mobile should be able to tether on 4.4.2 update without tethering services. The 4.4 kitkat somehow disabled tethering but the 4.4.2 re-enabled it. Does anyone else have experience with tethering without root and without using an app like easytetherpro or is this not possible?
Thanks.
Isn't this restriction made by the carriers and not by the phones software (or is it both?)?
I just checked with my moto makers t-mobile running 4.4 and it works flawless with my tablet (wifi tether, haven't checked BT yet).
The thing is, I live in Sweden.

has anyone found a good way to turn the hotspot on the moto x? thanks
Without root.... You can try apps in the Play Store like Fox If and Barnacle.

Yes, you do. It's a minor inconvenience for me. I use the hotspot then clear the credentials out and take the lock away.

Wouldn't the "skip" thing get around this as well?

Maybe, but personally I'm not a fan of the idea of carrying around yet another device (no matter how small) just to help me unlock the phone.

Try that. I used to pay for hotspot on two unlimited lines but got tired of the price. Dropped those features and still have unlimited. Before I rooted and boot loader unlocked my Note 2 I tried widgetsoid on both a stock Verizon note 2 and stock galaxy s3 and it works for both of them.

That just provides toggles for hotspot off and on. On the Moto X you can't use hotspot without the VZW subscription. Alternates like Foxfi are the only options for us right now.

I tried everything I could find for my Verizon Moto X, including SVTP which I paid for and worked great on my GNEX but does not on the Moto X.
FoxFi does work, however the certificate and lock screen PIN or pattern thing is annoying. Since this is the only option, I have no choice and will go through the routine when I need it, for now.

I know that but I wasn't paying for the hotspot on my two unlimited lines with a Note 2 and S3 and the widget allowed bypass of entitlement check apparently, as I was tethering via stock verizon hotspot on two stock unrooted phones. Didn't know if it would work or not on the X.
Now that we have root, is there any chance that we could see a working port of the NFC-enabled Google Wallet app that works on the Verizon Moto X? I'm sick of trying to use Isis for NFC payments, and I don't think that there are any hardware limitations that would prevent the app from working on the Verizon model. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.)
The latest wallet app works on a lot of devices, including verizon and devices without nfc. download it and try it. Are you saying that the nfc part of it doesnt work?
I downloaded Google Wallet on my non-root Moto X (Verizon) just the other day, and it seemed to log in and work fine. Haven't tried paying for anything with it though.
Tap to pay is disabled on Verizon.
Does the Moto X even have a secure element?

The Moto X on Sprint and US Cellular both support tap to pay, so all we have to do is trick the app into thinking that our phone os one of those, and we should be able to do it, right?

I think I remember reading that the secure element is being moved to the sim?
Just ordered a Moto X for Verizon and I need to find information about tethering this phone to my pc. I use this alot because I have unlimited data through VZW... So it would be really nice to continue using it.

As of right now you'd need to root (then use WiFi Tether, or make the necessary changes to use the stock tethering). FoxFi doesn't work w/ the Moto X on KitKat at the moment. No word on when it will, but it may be related to a cert issue in KitKat.
Root is no issue for me... I think the longest any of my phones have gone without root access is maybe 6 days from purchase... I've always rooted my phones. First thing I researched when ordering the X was whether or not they had root for kitkat

try using easy tether ... and foxfi has updated and works on kitkat on my s4... get the add-on and key, and you're golden :good:
You didn't define whether the phone you ordered is a Developer Edition. Because as far as I know only the DE can be rooted on Verizon.
I am really shooting for getting the MotoX on Monday with the $150 discount, but I cannot lose my wifi Tethering that I have on my rooted HTC DNA. Can someone ensure that I'll be able to tether free on a MotoX updated to KitKat?

It can currently be modded to enable tethering. Whether it can do so with any future updates is unknown, unless you get the Dev Edition...

I have unlocked AT&T Motox and I use native tether without any problems.

While you don't say your carrier directly, since you mention HTC DNA, it appears you are on Verizon.
Currently there is a method to root KK 4.4 on the "carrier" or "motomaker" editions of the X for Verizon. Once doing so, there is a thread on how to replace the VZEntitlment check apk with a hacked one and tether. I'm using the experimental beta of Wifi tehther for root with my rooted Dev Edtion X for Verizon.
As jeffreycentex said, we don't know what the future holds for ROOTing the "carrier" or "motomaker" edition X with its locked bootloader. So if/when the next OTA update comes to the Verizon X, you may or may not see it rooted, and might be stuck on the current 4.4 if you want to keep root/tether. The Developer Edition X is a different matter, and can be rooted thanks to its unlockable boot loader.
I may be completely wrong but isn't tethering included in your verizon share anything plan.
Isn't targeting included in Verizons shared plans

Thanks for the info everyone. Sorry, i completely forgot to say what carrier I was on.... I still have my unlimited data with Verizon that's why tethering is so important to me.

Like mentioned above.
You can follow the steps to root which will also give you the option to boot without read/write protection applied. At which point you can do the Entitlement Swap. And it will work.
That's how I did it, works fine and I'm on unlimited Verizon

If you are on older "grandfathered" plans which have unlimited data, tethering isn't included. Hence the reason for the question.
But you are right, anyone on the newer Share Everything and tiered data plans can use tethering. It just costs against your included data.
I've had a galaxy nexus on Verizon for awhile now
Its been rooted and has a custom rom
My question is how to I use my Moto x as a hot spot, without verizon getting wind of it?

root is required though...
Unless you have the unlimited data plan I don't believe they can stop you. For sure the Share Everything plans have tethering at no additional cost.
