Hello everyone
To whom it may concern:
My name is Jé and I am having issues with this Chromecast. I was able to successfully set it up and begin streaming videos successfully via YouTube and Google Play Video( I rented a movie to try it out). I do not recall if this issue occurred on the YouTube video but upon casting a video from my T-Mobile Galaxy Note 3 to my T.V it plays just fine, as with YouTube I was able to hit my home screen and send texts, etc and the Cast window still be in my notifications panel.
Well I got a phone call and went to answer it and the Chromecast window disappeared . I tried going into Google Play and even the Chromecast application and got nothing….I even restarted my phone and the movie was still PLAYING!...o and I was OFF Wi-Fi! My device said Wi-Fi was on but my data was coming from 4G LTE!
Again the movie still played with no hiccups or nothing even when I restarted my cellphone and played just fine when I accepted the phone call.
I had to unplug it from the back of my T.V, re connect it, and then go back into it works just fine I scrub to where I was and again after a short while the cast icon disappears but the movie is still playing and the phone drops from Wi-Fi. I even turned Wi-Fi off this time and it still played just fine! This is weird! I put a call into Google but to no avail.
I was wondering if anyone else experienced this issue. Why does the icon go away? How was it even working with me being off Wi-Fi ?

Not sure why the icon goes away, it should stay on your Notifications: Ongoing, but if your phone's WiFi is dropping out, that's probably why.
As for why the movie continues to play, this is normal. In normal circumstances* Chromecast does not stream from your phone/tablet's data connection. Instead your phone/tablet "hands off" the request (YouTube link, etc) to Chromecast and Chromecast goes online and retrieves it for playback on its own. Essentially, Chromecast is streaming the content directly from the source, rather than things going to your phone/tablet them to Chromecast. At the same time, your phone/tablet keeps a status/control connection open to the Chromecast so it can show you what's happening (play position, etc) and control it.
Likely the cast icon is disappearing when your phone drops off WiFi, as it loses the status/control connection to Chromecast.
* exceptions to this are apps that stream phone/tablet-stored content like AllCast/AirCast/KoushCast (currently requires root and KyoCast mod) and Chrome browser tab casting (this gets transcoded on-the-fly by the PC then sent to Chromecast)

Thanks for replying
my Wi-Fi does not drop its gotta be something to do with this app because it never drops when I am just connected to it regularly. And the fact that the icon goes away is annoying I missed so many parts of the movie because I had no way of scrubbing back unless I unplugged it from the back of the TV

Maybe I misunderstood, but you said your phone dropped off WiFi... I get that your router/AP isn't dropping the WiFi signal (I hope), otherwise there'd be all sorts of other problems.

Regardless, you shouldn't have to reboot your Chromecast - just re-launch whatever app was playing, then tap the Cast icon to connect again - it should then link up and give you status.
HBO GO seems to remember where you were at even across device reboots - must save it in your profile.
Try this:
Launch YouTube
Find a sufficiently-long video (at least a few minutes)
Tap the Cast icon to start casting it to your Chromecast
Watch the playback indicator - it should be counting...
Check TV - it should be playing
Go back to home screen
Kill YouTube app via task manager (or reboot your phone, if you want)
Check TV - it should still be playing
Launch YouTube app again
Don't choose a video, just tap the Cast icon to connect to your Chromecast
That should get your back to the video that's currently playing and give you a playback indicator that shows that the video never stopped playing

Yes you just might be on to something. But I did go back into Google play movies and clicked the movie and it started playing from my phone ! At a different point from my tv. And I went into the Chrome app and nothing, the cast wasn't even available. I keep my phone on wifi when I'm home. Never lost a signal, however since using this I noticed the wifi toggle was still on, but my device was on 4G. I turn off cast go back on wifi and it stays connected , this is weird lol

Wow, that is weird. The Cast icon should be available. I just launched something in YouTube then ran HBO GO and hit the Cast icon there (which then interrupted the YouTube that was already running on the TV, a little bit of a security/concurrency bump there).
What firmware build is your Chromecast on?

Run the Chromecast app and select your device - it'll tell you the build at the bottom.
Likely you're on 13300, or newer if there is one. I had all kinds of weird WiFi trouble with the first build (12072) - I couldn't even get through setup, but it all got better after I got 13300. Now it occasionally give me "connected by can't reach the Internet" after boot but it reconnects in a couple of minutes.

You're welcome. Hope you get it figured out soon. My Chromecast experience (past the setup troubles I described earlier) has been solid so far. Only hiccup currently is sometimes if I'm casting from YouTube it doesn't smoothly transition from the end of one video to the start of the next and I have to disconnect and reconnect to the Chromecast (switch back to phone/tablet/computer then go back to cast).
I have the same problems, mostly in the netflix app. But also a lot times the icon doesn't even show up in netflix (but also youtube) so I can't start casting. When I connect using the chromecast app, it does find the device.
I am on the latest fw and it is plugged in with the original charger.
The only thing I can think of, next to a faulty chromecast, might be the router, I have put dd-wrt on it so I can watch netflix from outside the us. But I don't have any other problems besides the same problem as the OP.

YouTube just had an application update (on the Android device side) for the oddities with the Cast icon when Bluetooth was connected... I wonder if it's related?

Still have the problems...
When on my desktop though, I get the icon to show a lot more consistently, in youtube, chrome and netflix..

I had no issues until 13300 with the "robustness" update for wifi.
Others have reported this same problem -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2443288
I went through it for about 30 minutes last night, Chromecast coming and going.
Resetting wifi through the Chromecast app on two phones was sometimes making Chromecast appear - for a few minutes.
I reset my router and that's cured it for now.
And my router is 2 days old, I just upgraded from an older model.
So for me, problem didn't start until the 13300 update, is much better with the latest versions of Netflix and YouTube but is independent of phones and routers.
Doesn't happen a lot but it's a real problem.

Funny, those are the same symptoms I had that 13300 cured, guess you can't win em all.
One thing to add since you've changed routers - if you're using the same SSID is best to clear the WiFi configuration for your devices and set it up from scratch (looks like you've already done this on your Chromecast).
Some devices get confused when the BSSID is different from what it was set up with. Essentially your new router has a different MAC address and some devices get weird about it, connecting but dropping or just sitting in a half connected state.

Google just wrote this back to me, I will try this the next time I use the cast option on my device
Hello,
Thank you for contacting Google. It was my pleasure speaking with you about your Chromecast device. With the issues that happened while watching the movie on Google Play, I have a quick question. Do you have battery saving mode on your phone? If so, please disable the battery saving mode.
The Battery Saver feature can be found under Apps > Settings > General Tab > Battery
Good tip on clearing the configuration for the SSID, not everyone knows to do that.
Google is just not getting it.
I have no battery saving anything going on, no task killing, no snake oil.
I've sat, watching the app in question and have watched the icon disappear.
Go to Chromecast right away, it's nowhere to be found.
But if you want to leave it alone, it'll play a two hour movie in that state.
Aside - maybe if I'd ran the previous version longer I'd have seen it there as well.
---------- Post added at 02:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:31 PM ----------
PS - I usually have close to 200 MB free ram, so it's not Android doing any task or service killing either.
I've captured several views of logcat during the problem.
Chromecast says it's timed out looking for it.
Netflix says E/venom media error.
Nothing to see there.

Very strange... Hopefully it's better nowadays, but my old HTC would stop doing stuff if it didn't have 300 MB or more free. *shrug*
Just for 100% certainty, can you check your Settings > WiFi > Advanced > Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep setting?

i have searched and read and searched some more and can not come up with anything.
here is my issue, i have a s4a, i have comcast modem with a netgear router, i have streamed pandora on this setup for at least a year or more, occasionally netflix and of course some youtube videos. a few weeks ago i signed up for hulu plus, got a chromecast and went to streaming video from my phone. i watched several shows through the chromcast from my phone as well as a movie on HBOgo. last week sometime something has happened and i can no longer stream anything on my phone, hulu, netflix, hbo, pandora, none of these work, i downloaded cartoon network and it works fine. if i disconnect from my wireless network i can stream all of them, as soon as i connect to wifi "unfortunatly (app) has stopped". i have reset my modem, router, wiped my phone, updated my phone to 4.3, re wiped the phone, and still nothing, as of this moment the only app that i have downloaded on my phone is pandora, and i can not stream when connected to wifi...
if i go anywhere else and connect to their wifi everything works fine... why did my phone all of a sudden stop streaming on my network only?
my wifes iphone works fine with all of the above and connected to the chromecast
any help would be great as i am ready to smash this phone

Nothing comes to mind that wouldn't have been solved by everything you've already done... Maybe you will have to buy a new modem?
Just another random thing that might work... try adding a different Google account to your S4A and downloading the streaming apps through that Google account and see if that solves the issue. I believe that specific Google accounts can be limited by developer's based on an auth code that I think is associated with your Google account. Idk why you might be limited, and it seems extremely coincidental that you would be limited by several different developers/provides at the same time, unless Google is for some reason responsible. Please note that I know little about this particular thing so it's a complete stab in the dark but it just might work.
not sure how or why this worked, but maybe it will help someone in the future.
i decided to scan my available wireless networks in range from my phone again.... (not because i was going to mooch from a neighbor ) and noticed that my neighbor had a network labeled "lastname" and "lastname guest".
that got me thinking and reading about my router, i found out that i could set up a "guest" network as well, set it up, connected my phone and only my phone and everything works again, i have no idea why or what happened but it works for now
I just wanted to make a thread to see if anyone else was experiencing an annoyance I've been dealing with for the past few days. I don't know if it's due to a new firmware version on the Chromecast, or the recent update to the Play Music app, but casting music hasn't been such an intuitive experience for me recently. As a relevant note, both my Chromecasts are running the latest Eureka-ROM.
As long as I've had the Chromecast, casting music from Play Music has been fluent and the connection between the Chromecast and my HTC One was hard to break, even as I switched between apps and let my phone go to sleep. Recently, this hasn't been the case. If I am listening to an album on the Chromecast while tethered to my phone, I may pause it for a number of reasons and step away, then come back and expect to resume it. When I pause the song, then walk away, my phone will obviously go to sleep (since my screen timeout is 1 minute). As of the last few days, when I return to my phone after such a break, I look at my TV and find my Chromecast back at the homescreen. I then look at my phone and the Play Music app thinks it is still connected and the song is paused. When trying to press play a dialog pops up and says something along the lines of "The song cannot be played at this time." The only way to resume playback is to click "Disconnect" in the app, then reconnect and it goes back to normal once I restart the song.
So anyway, I suppose this may be a Eureka-ROM thing, but I don't see the reasoning behind that line of thinking. Has anyone else been experiencing this or any other change of behavior in Play Music?
Just to make sure, double-check your Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep setting.

I could see that helping to keep control but if GPlay is working correctly he shouldn't have to be connected to the CCast with his device at all...
Does GPlay Music work differently than everything else does?

Many of the playlist-enabled apps have some level of "ping back" to manage the playlist functionality if it's not handled server-side.

Ahhh OK that does make some sense since no one seems able to do a proper playlist on the CCast that I have found...
Not the way it should work but I guess thats the workaround.
Google really should address this somehow...

The alternative would be to maintain a queue at the server's end, like how YouTube does TV Queue. Problem is, when interfacing with locally-hosted media it raises some privacy issues as the location leaves your network. It also would incur Internet traffic for those on limited/paid connections, albeit tiny, it'll still add up.
And of course not every app has a login/server attached to it. Perhaps something could be rigged with a cloud-hosted playlist file or something via Google Drive or another location that Chromecast can directly access.

I think some of the apps have moved to that buffered playlist model, though it still requires some callback and housekeeping in case the controller changes the playlist, etc.

I suppose...But they could allow changes via the control channel if they fleshed that channel out....
It definitely is one of the things Google has dropped the ball on in their design.
Thanks for the responses guys! Yeah, my Wi-Fi sleep policy is set to "Always", so that's not the issue. It's weird, my CCs have also not been showing up at all until a reboot sometimes. Something in the new GMusic or new CC firmware is not working as well as it used to.
For the sake of being thorough, give your router a reboot if you haven't already.
Also, do a ping test on your network to ensure it's not a faulty router/switch. I recently had to replace a switch (under lifetime warranty, luckily) because it had silently gone bad. It was still passing some traffic - enough for me not to notice immediately, but then my server lost its Gigabit connection (would only connect at 100 Mbps) and that got me investigating more.

That probably has a lot to do with it, now that you mention it. My AP is a crappy Linksys and I experience random connection drops occasionally. I've been meaning to replace it with something better for a while. I just power cycled it and I am casting fine now. I also paused a song and gave it a few minutes without touching my phone and it resumed alright. Then ten seconds later the song started back from the beginning. Since this isn't a known problem it probably is dropped packets from my AP or something similar.

If your AP is dropping out that can cause a number of problems. Is it one of the older WRT54G models? I used to run a bunch of those but there's a logging bug (even with logging turned off) that causes the router to go haywire. The third-party firmwares fixed it by flushing the logs via a cron job or firewall rule, I believe. I ended up with a pile of them after I moved to Pogoplugs for my VPN endpoints/servers.

That's interesting, I never knew that. I did actually used to have a WRT54G, but have since upgraded to a EA2700. I was playing around with the settings and I switched it over to "bridge mode" which I think fixed the issue. I use a router provided by Comcast so the Linksys was supposed to be acting strictly as an AP but it wasn't. Any casting I've done since has been working well.
Chromecast, stock build 22062. Was working fine a couple of days ago. Then all of the sudden one night from my phone (rooted Galaxy S3, Likewise S5 ROM) I could see the cast button in RealPlayer Cloud, but when I pushed it it would act like it was connecting for a while, and then the cast button would disappear and reappear. However, there was no change on the TV screen - it stayed on the Chromecast background. Doing some more investigation I found that none of the Chromecast apps would connect to it (Netflix, Youtube, etc.). If I go into the actual Chromecast app it would see my Chromecast, and I can see all of the info about it, but if I click on "Backdrop" it scans the network and then says "No Chromecasts found."
I could go onto my Nexus 7, and everything worked fine - I could cast from everything perfectly. However, after I rebooted the Nexus, it started having the same problem as well. I can not cast from anything. It sees the Chromecast, but cannot connect. Now none of my Android devices work with it.
I tried factory resetting the Chromecast. I could connect to the Chromecast and set it up, but it did not solve my problem. The only thing that does work is casting a tab from my laptop.
My thought is this has something to do with my router setup. I have a Watchguard XTM-25, and I am outside the US blocking Google DNS requests. About a week ago I made some configuration changes on my router (bridged two interfaces together) but this should not have affected the Chromecast - it and all the devices go through one access point on the same side of the bridge). Indeed, everything worked after I made the change. I have, however, reverted to the previous setup just in case and still nothing works. It worked for more than a year with this setup.
Any ideas on where I should start looking to fix this? It almost seems that the Chromecast is only able to communicate in one direction - it can't receive anything from any Android device (although it does from my laptop), but it is sending out the signal saying it is there. It is basically useless as it is.
Thanks in advance!
Update: If I connect to a different subnet which goes through a VPN everything works fine, so I am sure it is in router settings. However, I still don't know what to look for.

I've had exactly the same issues with my HTC One Max and HTC EVO LTE. Daughters GS4 works with the 6.5.87 version on my WIFI and my HTC does not work on her home WIFI. After doing everything you've described with no help, I noticed this occured with a recent update of Google Play Services to 6.5.87. I uninstalled it and sideloaded an older version from apkmirror.com (6.1.88) and my Chromecast world was right again. Unfortunatley Google would do a "stealth" upgrade within 24hr back to 6.5.87. So I tried sideloading the newest version (6.5.88). Now You Tube and Google Play Music work fine but the cast button doesn't even show up on the 3rd party apps (TuneIn, Pocket Casts, NetFlix etc.). Don't know what it means, maybe an API incomptability? Hoping for some updates to Services or the apps that will fix this.

Thanks. I tried going back to 6.5.86 but unfortunately it didn't fix it in my case.

I think if you try 6.1.88 you'll find it will work. My question is why and how to fix it.
Same happened to me this week, my SG3 works fine as always with the Chromecast but my SGN 10.1 suddenly stopped working. Cast button is on and Chromecast app can see it but it never connects.

Hi, I've been trying to chromecast for the last few days. I came from a Nexus 6p which worked 100% with chromecast. If i use the web browser and try to cast from a video channel, it never connects to my chromecast or TV (with chromecast built in). I've tried the mirroring option but it never finds a chromecast. I've downloaded Google Home, that seems to have a bug where i can't login to my google account from my P20 Pro.
I've looked online and on here and haven't seen any other posts on it. It would be good to test. I am on the Dual Sim Three UK 8.1.0.102 (C782) variant.
Thanks
It has worked flawlessly using local cast app.
I've always found Google home glitchy.

Works flawlessly for me. I've had the P20 Pro since release and I've never had a problem using a Chromecast, although I did recently factory reset my Chromecast, so that may have fixed any issues.
I use Chromecast several times a day, and haven't noticed anything odd.
I'm using Chrome browser to play web-videos and the Google Home app to mirror the screen.
Haven't used the built-in cast/mirror feature, but that has never worked reliably for me on any device
Thanks all, i wonder what is happening here. Even the Google home app isn't working. It's like an authentication error in the app. Chromecast doesn't connect to either of my chromecast devices. Works fine on my old phone still. I wonder if it's my firmware. I am on .102 which i know is really old. Waiting for Three/Huawei to update...

I'm on 102 and it works.

Chromecast mostly works for me. The only thing that doesn't is volume controls from screen off. Apart from that, and the few normal Chromecast glitches, it works well.
I'm casting NFL Gamepass from my P20 Pro to my Nvidia Shield as I type this, it's worked flawlessly whenever I've tried since I got my phone (mine is also dual SIM from Three).
This works very sporadically for me, often from apps that cast (excluding Netflix and YouTube which have a different mechanism for Chromecast discovery) it's as if the refresh devices button doesn't really trigger a proper refresh.
The Google home app often doesn't show my Chromecasts but if I keep it open and wait maybe 5 minutes they'll eventually show.
Anyone seen anything like this?
I had problem with NBA game time app, it didn't display the cast icon after update of the device to .107 but iwas probably due to the implementation of an old. Chromecast API from NBA app itself. After NBA has updated the app is working perfectly
I streamed YouTube to a chromecast this evening without any problem, worked like expected...
No issues here, sounds more like a network issue to me.

Have you guys tried it with apps other than youtube or netflix?
Those work fine for me but they use a different discovery method, see here;
actually... I can't post links but googling "netflix different chromecast discovery" and going to the google developers discovery troubleshooting confirms this.
Network is also ruled out for me as it's still working flawlessly on my old phone and my wife's phone.
I cast all the time from Plex so it's super annoying not being able to find the chromecasts for 10 minutes and the closing apps/G Home, rebooting etc trying to trigger a discovery.
Cheers,
Jon
Oh a further update to my theory of "the refresh/scan isn't working as it should"
I have a CC that turns off when the TV is turned off and this sometimes appears in the list of devices for hours after it's been turned off, like overnight.
I've tried a factory reset but it didn't help, it's across multiple apps so maybe something to do with discovery in the android discovery software itself?
I wish all the apps just used their own discovery like YT/NF.... grumble, grumble...
Further update...
I'm 90% sure this is due to some overly aggressive power saving. I've also noticed the BBC news widget doesn't update as much as it should.
Today I tested resetting a Chromecast and attaching it as a new one. Didn't work. Needed to use another device to get it set up with Google home. Not ideal. Be interesting to see if anyone else can attach a new Chromecast after factory resetting one if anyone fancies some troubleshooting for me?
Go on, be a pal.
Cheers,
Jon
Works flawlessly in streaming from playmovies to casting the screen
I stream from plex or YouTube to a chromecast without problem
Damn... Maybe it's just some devices or a firmware issue then.
I'm on 8.1.0.103, have you a later one? Might be stuck waiting for an update

I'm on .107 firmware, I never tried older ones.
Im also experiencing some problems with chromecast. Basically, some apps, like spotify, sometimes does not show my chromecasts under devices available.
After some tests, I think it is something related to the wifi strength and wifi+. If I disable the sim data, magically all the chromecasts around my house are correctly detected.
So as the title says, I can't use the cast/screen mirroring feature in phone. I just cannnot connect to any tv
Whenever I try to cast, it doesn't show any devices at all. Null. and using the button from the notification dropdown, it just searches endlessly.
Some notes:
1. No problem with network. No problem with TV. Other phones work just fine, and doesn't take more than a minute to find device.
2. I tried not only on my TV but on other TV's as well with cast feature. My TV is Hisense smart 39", 39A5605.
3. Already did several restarts, disabled active apps (like adguard), still same.
4. My phone is using the latest PIE update (official update but sideloaded)
5. Already tried connecting on the same WiFi network. Still didn't work. Other devices can connect to the TV without the need to connect on the same wifi network.
6. Already tried turning both mobile data and wifi while scanning. still nothing.
7. Already tried disconnecting current wifi connection (set network to 'forget) but left wifi on while scanning. Still no device found.
8. Already tried installing some apps (like Google Home app and other cast app). Nothing.
9. Already went to developer options and turned on 'Wireless Display Certification', but no additional options show up on my cast screen (like listening mode etc). Just plain nothing.
10. There's no three-dot menu on the cast screen that will show 'enable wireless display.' just a search icon on the top right and nothing more.
I really wanted to find a solution, but can't find a specific fix. I hope somebody here will help. Please. Please I'm desparate.
By the way, I know some will say I should do a factory resetting, but please understand if I say no for now. Because if I do, I'll lose a lot of settings and configuration (system-level and app-level), among other hassle it may incur.
Try connecting the TV on the same wifi as your phone and use xcast from playstore. My LG TV is a bit finicky when it comes to connection so xcast helps. But I do have the certification options on the cast screen. Since, you said you sideloaded Pie, if xcast doesn't work, maybe try resetting the device.

Thanks for the kind response. So I tried x-cast (though it uses a different name in the playstore now). Funny thing is, x-cast says it found the tv, which it did, and says it's connected via DLNA. So the phone can actually detect the tv, but why need x-cast? However, TV doesn't show any signs of connections or response. When I also try to play any video inside x-cast app, it's just stuck in loading. (see screenshot). Did I miss any step here?

This is the screen where the TV usually connects. I am sorry but I can't think of any other troubleshooting steps for now.
last night, I did a factory reset. Didn't do anything go. Just caused me a lot of trouble.
