Chromecast + NFL Sunday Ticket (from Madden 25)...this could rock

So I don't know how many of you are big NFL fans like me, but if you are then there's a chance that you may have heard about the special edition of Madden NFL 25 that is currently available for preorder on Amazon. With this $99 edition, you of course get the game, but in addition you get a code for complete access to the online streaming version of NFL Sunday Ticket (all games, just as the normal DirecTV version would have), and you don't have to be a DirecTV subscriber to use it.
Anyways, I bought the special edition and will have it the end of August when it is released. All along I planned to simply bring my iMac into the living room, connect it with HDMI adapter cable, and watch the games that way. However, it looks like I've stumbled on a great setup - just have to fire up the Chrome on the iMac in the home office, Chromecast it in full screen to the livingroom, and boom, NFL Sunday Ticket on TV for 40 bucks! Absolutely can't wait to the first week of September to try this out!!! :good::good:

I think he's talking about casting some OTHER content from the web to his TV. The 18+ kind....
But I definitely like your idea better. Myself, I am a MLB.TV subscriber and anxiously awaiting my CC :good:

He could also be referring to unofficial streaming video sites. That's how I watch the occasional Pats game when I'm not home. Not the best quality of course. Thanks to @joeski27 by the way. Hadn't heard about this special edition of Madden. I'll definitely take a look.

Well yeah, I mean I think we all know that all the porn fans will totally dig CC, that's a given. I was just pointing out another very cool idea for CC use...he might as well have popped into this thread and said "the NFL thing sounds cool, but my love of watching storm chaser videos on YouTube is so much more enticing"...what's the point? All I was doing was putting out what I thought to be a nifty idea specifically regarding NFL games. Anyways, good call on your end as well with the MLB idea, and eventually the same will be true for those who subscribe other major sports packages (NHL, NBA, etc) which allow subscribers to view content online. Really the YouTube/Netflix/etc. is the tip of the iceberg, and I think will be greatly overshadowed by many options to come for this device.

I did the same thing for many games the last couple of years (though my brother in law let me use his DirecTV password for online content when his father wasn't using it). This time I'm not messing around and decided that for the $40 extra with the Madden game I would guarantee myself every single game in reliably high quality...but now with CC it takes this plan concept to the next level, and for cheap. I know that if you look at the Madden 25 reviews on Amazon (not really reviews since it isn't out yet, just comments about the package really), the #1 thing people want to know is if they can stream the games from their PC/Mac to their PS3. Turns out the universal answer is a big fat no, meaning that - until now - they were stuck having to go with a hardwired PC-to-TV connection, which I resigned to doing for this upcoming season. I hadn't even thought about that aspect before buying my CC, but now that I have it it seems like extremely sweet icing on the cake for me!

Good looking out, I just now preordered that and I hate sports video games. Anyone want a copy of Madden 25 Anniversary edition that is only missing the NFL Sunday Ticket code? lol.

I'm not familiar with enough the CC on what limits and what kind of videos that it can play. I ordered one, but it was after the initial batch was sold out. I work nights, so I was asleep during the initial announcement.
I'm not sure if MLB will work. I know they use Flash Player, but it does some quirky stuff.
As for the rest, they could work. For those that have used these services, you know what you're getting. I personally use the international version of these service with a VPN. Then I can always be out of whatever market is being blacked out; it's nice to be "in" a different country for those national broadcasts. Personally, I've been using a HTPC for a few years, so this device is going to replace anything and will be more limited than the HTPC. I think it could be interesting see what people can do with it. May make it easier for those temporary setups at others' homes.
On a side note, the international NFL online service is free for those in the Netherlands, which normally runs around $200 to $250. Additional $50 for playoffs. I think they PS3/DirectTV thing runs a little over $300 if you don't have DIrectTV and Sunday Ticket. I don't know the cost if you already do and just want PS3 or mobile access, but I would assume more than $40.

MLBtv works just fine on CC. Tested it last night. For unofficial streams, first row worked really well too. I watched NFL Network using my CC for about an hour last night.

I use the NFL Game Pass service. It's a service that's available outside the USA and it's territories. Not all geographical regions, such as Canada, have it available, but Europe does. Here are some video comparisons of the NFL Game Pass versus local cable TV.
The nice thing about the NFL Game Pass, they have an Android app that lets you watch the live and replays, and also the NFL Network. You just have the get APK from someone outside the USA since Google changed how the store checks where you, so MarketEnabler doesn't work now. Maybe they'll update the app for CC. That would be interesting and cool.
They nice thing about the Game Pass service, the quality of service is more reliable and consistent. I've used sites like FrontRow, and you just never know what quality your'e going to get. The big knock, you need to get a VPN service which can run additional $8 to $15 a month on top of the cost of the service. And with VPNs and sports, you definitely want a paid VPN so you have enough bandwidth. For me, since I cut the cord and watch sports all year round, it's something I use almost everyday, so it pays for itself.
I've been using alternatives to watch sports for going on three years. So, I'm pretty familiar with how to get most sports and with good quality. I use both the PC and Android mobile devices..

New NFL Game Pass app
I have been having so much fun with my NFL GamePass app. Until they updated the app. When I opened it this afternoon, a message said it required an update from the store. Of course, I can't go to the UK play store for the new app.
Sux!!!
Maybe someone across the pond can post the new app apk? That would be lovely.

Actually, you can asssuming you have downloaded it from Google Play before. If so, open Google Play, go to your apps, then All (next to installed), and just scroll down till you hit NFL Game Pass. And they now it where it's one app for both phones and tablets. The new version is needed to see the games, but NFL Network still works on the old (it works on the new one too).

This could be very interesting, my concern would be this statement, "For fans who are not currently DirecTV subscribers but are able to receive DirecTV service, they will receive a promo code entitling them to $10 off per month for their first year of service and one year of NFL Sunday Ticket Max at no additional charge."
How do they determine if you can receive the service? Or just a matter of BSing

Any Hope of more (Official) Content?

I'd like to start a thread for news/rumors of more officially supported services.
Not casting web-pages, or demo Apps/Hacks, but Official Apps from other services that support Chromecast.
Any hope?

well hulu and pandora is confirmed, but the main problem right now is the SDK isn't complete (they have a preview one out though).
Once the SDK is done we will start seeing a lot of content I bet.
I am looking forward to bitcasa support. That will be awesome.

I hope so - I think this is the first step of moving away from Broadcast TV for TV entertainment. This is the revolution that Apple had planned to do but didn't. When people do reviews of the Cast I think they miss the largest point. Controlling the content using an interface we all love (phone or tablet) is a giant step forward. Using the built in smart features of a TV or DVD to search for a YouTube video is a terrible experience. You need a link to find most things and those are shared in communication links in your phone.

Ya i thought that is what you were talking about, what else the chromecast will be able to do. Its confirmed it will be able to use hulu and pandora should be comming kinda soon. And HBO, Vimeo, Redbox Instant, Vevo (?), Devour (?), Blip (?) (maybe these are britsh or something, i've never heard of them), have all mentioned they are planning on it.

Hulu said they were interested in adding it some day. I wouldn't be expecting it anytime soon. The only real partner besides Netflix announced at launch was Pandora. My guess is Pandora will release an update about the same time the final SDK is released. Google is probably working with Pandora as sort of a beta test of the SDK.

The most recent Chromecast update has broken support for AllCast, an Android application that previously allowed users to stream their personal media to a TV. Developer Koushik Dutta accomplished the feat by reverse engineering the Chromecast's code. Those apps were never approved and on the app whitelist. ALL apps are blocked by default. Only approved apps will run on the Chromecast. What those apps were doing was reverse engineering the Chromecast and using a hack to get around it. Google fixed that hack.

New names for Chromecast:
iCast
Castrate
ClosedCast
CastOff
OutCast

Sucks that now only YouTube and Netflix are the only things that'll play. Enjoyed the ability to play local media.

I've got a Roku3 that does everything I need..

Very disappointing! I was at a friend's home and he was showing off mirroring his iclone through Apple tv. Was hoping Chromecast would top that.

After getting Aircast and fling to work, I ordered 2 more Chromecast dongles. Just cancelled them.
Hopefully Google is just temp blocking until ready to officially supporti 3rd party apps. If not, back to Roku.

I don't know if anyone else noticed but casting a local video file from a chrome browser tab actually plays smoother now. But aircast provided the easiest way to cast a video file from an Android phone.

Mostly because it was more useful when AllCast and Fling worked. Kind of back in the ballpark with Google TV now in that it doesn't do a lot (for me anyway). Nothing more, nothing less.

I'd say we are disappointed because it appears Google is intent on heading off the kind of innovation and creativity that has made the Android platform so wonderful. Google should let developers do what they do best: reverse engineer, hack and create, to turn Chromecast into the most powerful and versatile device it can be. They should let people root the device, they should let people work around the limits.
The disappointment is more that this is a sign that Google is not interested in fostering a creative, innovative developer community for Android. The disappointment is more that Google seems so short sighted in thinking they need to lock everything down. I thought they knew that a large part of the appeal of the platform has always been how open it is.

It may never have been announced to be able to do it, but to most it was obvious that the device was capable of doing it and that with dev support a lot was possible. It is disappointing to see how restrictive Google is being in taking away support for a function that the chromecast can handle. That being said, there will always be a way to accomplish this, it is just a matter of how inconvenient Google is going to make it.

While Google is within their own rights to change parts of the software that was never intended to be used for 3rd party, it's a massive mistake for Google to do this just to kill off those 3rd party apps. There must be a good reason for it and Google should make a public announcement as to why. There's probably a good % of sales of Chromecast specifically because of the functionality AirCast gave. I was going to buy a ChromeCast only because of the functionality AirCast gave but without this, a ChromeCast is useless for me.
I won't be buying until this functionality is officially supported or Google provides an official API/support for 3rd party applications that do provide this functionality.
Such a shame as Google had some much promise behind this product but that seems to have disappeared.

Just discovered an app that streams local content to any dnla player - wiTV. It offers mostly russian online contant but.. It also offers streaming local content from all of your devices including apple pc and Android. It creates a dnla local server on mobile devices and you can launch local media playback and scroll through it on the mobile device plays well on my old asus oplay r3 and samsung tv

The SDK isn't final. And in this case the developer hacked around one of the most essential parts (the app whitelist). No offense, but I don't want Netflix, HBO, etc to pull their content off the Chromecast so Google can let hackers design apps to stream content from my phone in a non-standard way that was never intented. How about we all wait until the SDK is final before judging Google. All they did was fix a security hole in the device.

I agree.
I purchased the ChromeCast only for the purpose of wireless playing movies from my laptop to my HDTV. I currently use a HDMI cable, but thought wireless would be ideal.
I never use Netflix.
I never use Utube.
I wasted $35 plus shipping, because google refuses to allow me to use the hardware I purchased the way I want to.
It just arrived a few days ago, and I can root it.
But I don't think rooting it will help.
It's just a paperweight now.
Maybe I can return it to Google for a full refund?

I hope you sent this as feedback, very well put. The corporate device manufacture, including Google has benefited from free private development. A lot of the features that come on devices today started with the devs witch in turn busted sales from their innovation and put android where it is today.

I don't under stand what the problem was. I mean, I was just using AllCast to watch videos of my kids on the TV. I'm not willing to spend time to upload videos to YouTube just to do that (nevermind privacy concerns and the fact the world doesn't care about my kid doing backflips off the couch).
I already have an HTPC for media playback, there's only personal content on my phone.
This was probably disabled because it wasn't using the actual SDK and was more of a hack. Was neat while it lasted.

I submitted an app to Apple store, called rPlay, which does Chromecast emulation. The app is being reviewed right now. Here is the description:
"rPlay tunrs your iPhone/iPad/iPod into a chromecast device, so you can stream music and video from another device using chromecast enabled apps, such as YouTube and Google Music, etc. You can in turn stream from your iOS device to your Apple TV, this way, you can stream chromecast media to your Apple TV."
I hope Apple can approve this FREE app.
It supports YouTube/GoogleMusic/Custom Apps, chrome tab browsing is not there yet due to the lack of features in Safari browser.

Will this support Netflix?

Do you mean netfix chromecasting?
This is not easy, unless netflix app is available on that platform, and assuming it takes the same parameters as the netflix version on the real chromecast device. We will definitely give it a try.
Right now, Windows version supports all features, except netflix.

I would definitely be interested in this app.

still "Waiting for review" status (for 4 days now). The first date I submitted this app was Aug. 22, so much waste of time.
The 2nd time takes same time as 1st time, after any modifications and binary re-submit. It's INSANE!

Gave it a try running YouTube app on my android device and using my iPad 1 as Chromecast receiver. Works out of the box. Why didn't your post the playstore links?
Tried the app, couldn't cast anything (hoped for entire tab casting, later saw it should allow only casting various videos on various webpages).
Maybe it works and would appeal to some but it's not really intuitive..

This gives vGet some competition. Thanks for letting us know.

Does this only cast sites of services already compatible with chromecast? I tried it on videos at amctv.com and couldn't get it to work.

Check out the Chromecast description, not all videos will cast, and that makes sense.
Amctv.com videos aren't in a format that the native Chromecast player understands.

Thank you. Tab casting is cool idea, but it will drain the phone battery just like screen mirroring (Miracast). Let's see if we can make that happen with Chromecast.

About a month initially with the Chromecast "preview" SDK and then a week to update it after the final SDK was released. It took longer because we didn't use the Cast SDK's companion library. We didn't like the default look and feel of Google's remote control buttons all squished up in one corner of the screen. Hope it helps.

...and with the latest update of vGet and its unusually high cost, this browser looks like a sweet deal. I might give it a better test this time around

Maybe this would be a good community to post a beta on for a version that supports 4.4

Sweet but 10 minutes champ? That wasn't long enough to get me past stealing it to buying it .
