Kies popped up with a firmware update for the T679 tonight. My phone is unrooted. I did the update but don't see any difference. I don't think that this is anything like a Android update. Anyone know what this update did?

Latest update was issued a year ago according to this: http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-4259
When you bought the phone it needed the latest update in all likelihood, and now you are getting the notification. Official updates for this device are done in all likelihood. They even dropped the newer Exhibit model the T599 already.

The last update that I had before today was changing the phone firmware from Exhibit II 4G to Samsung Galaxy Exhibit 4G and that was about a year and a half ago. Then this one showed up today. ???

I read somewhere that there might be an OTA available when I first turn on my phone. I'm getting my phone tomorrow and was wondering if someone has taken the update and then rooted yet?
Wondering if the update will screw me on getting rooted.
Thank you in advance on any input you have.

I got phone on Monday, but still haven't got update
The update was for the international version. Tmobile hasn't released the update yet.
My SM-T700 is rooted so I don't get OTA updates. But when I hooked it up to Kies a while ago it said there was an update available so I said OK to install. After it rebooted, it went through an "Android is upgrading" screen where it counted up my apps from 0 to 150. It looked like my phone did when I turned on ART so I was thinking could this be 5.0? But no, it is still showing 4.4.2 in About Device.
Also says
Kernel Version 3.4.9-3702705, [email protected] #1, Sat Dec 27 19:56:44 KST 2014
Build number KOT49H.T700xxU1ANL2
Kies says my firmware version is PDA:NL2 / CSC:NL2 (XAR)
I've only played with it a few minutes but nothing obvious changed
I'm not rooted, also got the update. Not sure what it did.

Did you get the upgrading apps thing when it restarted? Unlike my phone which is on 4.4.4 my tablet does not seem to give me the ability to enable ART in the developer settings. Bu the way it was doing the upgrading apps it looked just like my phone did when I turned on ART. I'm wondering if this could be some kind of preparatory update to get the device ready for the Android 5.x update?
I don't see art listed.

What is the exact model number of your tab? If you check samobiles website there are many updates for our device in different countries which is all based still for 4.4.2. So bummer Lollipop after a few months
Got an update just know as well. UK Samsung Tab S 8.4 user. Took a screenshot:
Sent from my SM-T700 using XDA Free mobile app
I bought a UK Samsung Tab S 8.4 the other day and it had this update. I haven't updated yet as i didn't want to lose the ability to root.
Anyone know if you can still root with the updated firmware?

I'm pretty sure you can. Although cfautoroot can fail. Just flash the new firmware with Odin, then flash twrp recovery and flash supersu. Zip with twrp. That guarantees root most times and that's how I do it on new firmware.
Logged into Kies and it told me I had the latest firmware.
I bought my tablet a few weeks ago on ebay, and this was the build number that my tablet had when I got it. Apparently my tablet was from the Canadian region originally and this update was pushed out to them first. The firmware for it has been floating around on a few sites as well.
I also rooted with cfautoroot on this firmware.
Hi every one
I have a samsung device. I want update my device ( note 5 ) but need a guidance ، because i dont know which one of way better for updating ?? Kies or ota
Whats difference between kies and ota??
Pls someone help me
both the same.
some phones can't update by OTA so kies is the only way.
mostly old phones are better on Kies, like galaxy s4.

kies software is old, now its Smart Switch to update your phone.
i don't know why they different file size. i never really never notice it. but you should have no problem updating through OTA.
If you can't update to Marshmallow Android 6.0 update when its available for your device then try Smart Switch software.
i updated through OTA and the update's been installed and working fine. so you should be ok.
I have 2 Galaxy S5 Active G870A that was never updated past Android 5.0 and I'd really like to do a factory reset and then flash it up to 6.0.1.
I tried doing this with one of them, but when I try to do the OTA it says the system is up to date. When I talked to with AT&T's support they said the update might not be available any more. What options do I have to update to the official 6.0.1?
I have an AT&T S5 Active and the OTA update came as soon as I activated the phone on my plan, just 3 months ago. Don't know the answer, figured it might help to know it's still available.
You can try the post at the url below, that might help.

Galaxy Note 9 on Att. Most recent security update is June 2019. I've spoken to Att and Samsung, tried safe mode, reset, etc. Nothing works so far. Any suggestions? I'm concerned that if I'm not getting security updates am I missing OS updates as well?

Not sure when the camera features came out.
Did you try the Samsung computer app to update?
What about Odin and loading the newest build?
I am terrible at instructions but these 2 PC apps might get the job done.
I did try Smart Switch, it said all up to date. ATT guy said he could see updates but nothing we did could get them to load. Suggested Samsung who I contacted. Tried safe mode, etc. Finally he suggested local geek squad at Best Buy to use Smart Tool to update?? I stopped by but they said they couldn't help.

this site(xda) is plastered with posts on how to use Odin and download the latest firmware/software for your phone and flash/install it.
step 1 search and read about what device model you have.
step 2 download the firmware( system OS) for your device model. web sites and utilities can be used to downlaod the software. frija and sam firm tool are both utilities developed here on xda. search for them.
step 3 research about odin and how to use that tool to manualy update your samsung device with the extracted file downloaded on step 2.
xda is a do it your self type of site. usualy searching would answer all your questions.
What bober said. I have had this issue with At&t since Note 8. Don't get them on Note9 or 10. At&t is horrible at ota's. Some get them some don't. I have always had to flash them with Odin. And they are even worse at posting their firmware. I think the last N9 firmware the post was 1ARG6 or something like that.
My SM-N950U Still Rooted Note 8
I have had AT&T for awhile, and noticed once I switch to unlock phones bought from Samsung directly, I get the OTA's more consistently. Of course this is a sample size of one.i currently am on Novembers 2019 update on both my note 8(no sim, just use as mp3 player) and my Note 9(daily driver with AT&T sim). Honestly I didnt even check for updates, and just get the notice automatically about new updates being ready to install.
I would wonder if something else is wrong, like those above said. Odin to a clean install of the correct firmware and you should be good to go.

Does using Odin trip the Knox of a samsung ?
I haven't gotten any update since February, 2019. I have been skeptical about using Odin to update, so as not to root my phone or trip the knox

No.
Odin is for flashing official Samsung firmware
So Knox remains intact.
Flashing non Samsung custom roms custom recovery and rooting will trip Knox *permanently
Thank you, I really appreciate this. I'll go download the firmware from sammobile
