Hi,
first of all, I'm an Vanir Nightly from 27. November and using Optimus Prime 2.7 (AnyKernel).
And English isn't my mother language, so I hope you understand what I mean
I have noticed, that, when my phone is on silent mode, the speaker activates when I recieve a message or any other kind of sound would be played if the phone wasn't silenced.
It is just some very quiet noise (you just hear it when you hold the phone with the speaker against your ear), but it is there
Either for just a second or two (when receiving a message / phone would play a short notification sound) or as long as some apps like games with music are running.
So here is my question:
Is this just happening on my phone / with this Rom and Kernel combination or do other users also having this problem?
It's not a big problem, but it bugs me a bit, and I think that it has also a little effect on the battery life of my phone

A couple of days ago I also encountered that problem. I put my phone on silent over night and in the morning I received a message and it played the message sound. Silent mode was still on. I am also on Vanir.. I didnt give that much thought because when I got a call in silent mode, my phone didnt go off..

That is something, I have never seen (or heard) on my phone (until now).
I only got this very quiet random noise, which you really just hear, when you hold the phone with the speaker to the ear while it is silenced and something happens, where the phone would make a sound if it wasn't silenced.
Would like to know if it is just a "bug" on my phone, or do other users also have that problem.
Same thing happening with my phone since today...
Using CM 10.2 with Iodak 8.5 kernel
Thanks for the OP. Now I know its not just me imagining noises from my phone!

Hi, I'm totally stoked on what is causing this problem.
Brought a new XPERIA X1, and installed Valkyrie's Rom on it. Whenever i make or receive a call and use the normal earpiece for it, it can vary from 10-40 seconds, the voice just cuts off and i hear buzzing sound, then its all blank, i cant hear or say anything so they other person can't me, or i can't hear them, although the call doesn't hang up. When i do hang up one of these either happens.
-None of the sounds now work eg music player, make another call, system notifications, they are all blank
-Or none of the sounds work, but when i make a call, there is a continous buzzing sound
I thought it would be the vibration tool near the earpiece so i just went settings and activated for it abit so it vibrated for like 2 seconds, and then i could make a call for another 10-40 seconds, before the same issue occured.
I tried redoing the vibration thing again but it didnt work , there is sitll the continous buzzing sound or nothing at all.
I do not know if this is hardware related or just my audio drivers..
PS: My loudspeaker works fine, i can play sounds continously
well did this happen before Valkyrie's Rom?
hard reset ?
use another rom if problem continues
Yeah, it happened before, NRG rom so i thought it was that, so i changed roms and still same problem. Sometimes it happens sometimes it doesn't i managed to get 2 minute into a phone call in recently before i hung up so i dont know if its constant or varies
bump *******
Have you tried the stock rom again?
You could flash back to the original stock ROM. Check the threads on how this is done.
Hi!
Everytime i get or make a call i cant hear my "call-partner"...when i turn speaker on i can hear him perfect! He can hear me also perfect the whole time! When i click on Volume up it shows "Headphone volume" and the over the headphone i can my call-partner. So i guess my phone thinks the headphones are connected?! But... my media player works normally over my speakers and my phone rings, also....
pls help me out...its now almost 3 weeks, that i always have to make calls over the speaker and i flashed every possible firmware...from stock ginger to cyano to miui back to a ginger-rom and and and ....
now im on Miui, cause my phone also goes black during a call and on MIUI i can turn off my proximity sensor
somehow my phones sucks :/ but i love SGS !!

Maybe there is some trouble with your Headphone input detection. Have you tried to use a headphone with it? Do you have sound then?
Thanks for the answer!
Yes, when i put my headphones in, i can hear the voice of the "caller" and i can hear music....but when i put the headphones out again, i cant hear him.
So i thought, perhaps my phone thinks that there are always my headphones plugged in.... but my music player plays sound through the speakers....strange?!
whats going on?! is there a different phone.apk i could try? but i flashed many FW and nothing solved the problem...
or does an app exist here i can test my external ear speaker?!
I vaguely remember a CM7 issue wherein you had to toggle mute to trigger the voice to work on calls. I'm sure your problem is different, since it's happening across multitple firmwares, but it's food for thought.
I would have also assumed your phone was thinking headphones were plugged in when they weren't. But if music plays through the rear speaker just fine, this must not be the case.
Whatever it is, good luck!
Does nobody know a method or a app with what i can test my "Earspeaker" ?
I have the same issue with my i9000M and have been unable to determine the cause. There must be a way to completely wipe the phone and restore a stock ROM in order to reset whatever setting controls handset speaker volume.
psss... noone is looking??? it is top secter Samsung's procedure, do not share:
1. factory wipe
2. flash stock firmware
3. factory wipe
I've got this exact issue.. proximity sensor is also broken and locks up the phone. I disabled it with a patch - but my earpiece is non-functional on stock.
Ideas? Hardware defect?
[Sorry to bump.]
Hi, just upgraded from my Galaxy Note to the z1 yesterday.
Very impressed with the phone so far, but I have encountered one strange problem that I can seem to find no other comments about.
When I connect a headset (the bundled one, specifically) and turn my phone to silent mode so I can enjoy my audiobook in peace without being bothered every time I get a new promotional email, the notification sound plays over and pauses my audio book.
It does this no matter whether I turn the phone to silent, vibrate, turn the ringtone and notification volume to 0, and whether or not I make these changes manually or allow the smart connect app to make them for me.
The strange thing is, it only plays the notification sounds when something is playing through the headset. When I'm sitting just using the headset as a handsfree then everything behaves as expected - if a notification comes in, the phone will vibrate, flash the notification led, but won't make a peep otherwise. But as soon as media is playing, the phone seems to make up its own mind to vibrate and play the notification sound even though I've put it on silent.
Am I the only one experiencing this bug, or, more surprisingly, am I the only one who finds it hugely irritating?
Can anyone else even confirm if this behaviour is normal or is there something bugged out?
Over 60 views and no one can even confirm if this is actually how the phone is meant to deal with notifications?
Yes, I think is just You. Anyway, you have to play with settings because there have to be the solution, if you do not that mean is how supposed to be. If you are Rooted maybe you can edit some notification so if they will not show up you will not listen the sound in the handset.
I've tried everything! On my other phones (used an htc desire hd and a galaxy note) once I had my phone on silent then I didn't get audible notifications whether I had a headset plugged in or not. On the Z1 though I can't seem to get rid of them. I only hear them when I'm playing music, I wouldn't mind if it gave me an audible notification if I just had my headset plugged in as a handsfree and wasn't listening to anything, but having my music interrupted is pretty annoying, and I still don't even know if it's just something stupid I'm doing or if that's just the way it is.
I'm not rooted, I don't really want to since it stops sky go from working, but if it can stop the notification headache I might be willing. Don't really want to install a custom ROM unless the camera performance is as good as stock either
Yeah, I get it too. Too lazy to check the player settings though so not sure if it is something in the player settings that is doing this

Good point, can be the player too.
haven't seen anything in the walkman or audible apps to turn this off and never had to do it on my previous phones. oh well, at least i know it's normal now, hopefully they fix it in an update. thanks.
Hi.
I have searched for this problem and haven't found anything useful. When I get a notification from let's say Facebook Messenger, it's either too quiet or doesn't produce a sound at all. After a couple messages get through one after another, it gets louder.
Is there a setting I'm missing?
I've noticed it too. Whats weird is that this happened to my Droid 3. Its annoying. A great example was my alarm this morning. I heard it really lite then it jumped to its correct volume setting. Every, please chime in if you've been noticing this!
Noticed this on alarm. I don't mind ascending volume but it's not ascending volume at all - more like very low and a crescendo to its normal volume.
This is new with Lollipop for me. It happens with all sound. I can even go to the volume settings, and the first time I 'preview' a sound it will do the same thing before it corrects itself (afterwards the previews will then work fine until I pause for a minute and try again.. then same problem).
Bumping this.. becoming a problem. Anyone have a fix or workaround?
In addition to above, I'm also noticing that I have my volume set to max.. but occasionally I'll find it somehow reset itself to "mid" levels.
I don't think this is something that can be turned off or on, most likely it's some kind of bug. Let's just hope it gets fixed soon, it's really annoying
The Motorola forms say it's a safely feature, preventing you from damaging your hearing if it goes off while it's next to you head. It should at least be an option.

I found that if I use the volume rocker to change the volume it sometimes makes the volume turn off. Instead I go into settings/sound and change the volume from there
Same issue here. Samsungs have this exact same "feature" too, drove me nuts back when I owned one. When I create ringtones, I create them with the intent of getting the impact of the song or melody right in those first few seconds, and "increasing ring" completely ruins it. I installed this app for the Samsung back when it was on either ICS or KK, but sadly it doesn't seem to work with Lollipop. Maybe we can all bug the developer to make it work with Lollipop?

I'm rooted, so if anyone knows where to go in the system files to change this, I'd be willing to try it.

I don't think this is an escalating ringtone feature -- I think it's a bug. Possibly it's just really poorly implemented, but I've used escalating volume on ringtones with CM before and compared to that, the volume inconsistencies here are far too sudden and inconsistent. For example, sometimes half my notification is quite (or possibly completely silent?) and sometimes the entire sound comes out at the desired volume.
It also does it for tone it makes when you change the volume (i.e. the first time you click vol up/down, the tone it makes is way too quite, then you have to change the volume a couple of more times to get it play at the correct volume). Hopefully this isn't something they designed on purpose, b/c if it is then that's just a terrible user experience (why would I want the preview of how loud I'm making the volume to come out at the wrong volume?)

After using my Moto X for almost a week, I'm starting to see what you're saying, but I'm not sure Motorola would see it as a bug. I've noticed more than once my phone will be sitting right in front of me, and while the screen flashes on for a notification, no sound follows it, even though my notification volume is clearly up. If I go back in and try running manual tests, the notification sound works fine. It's possible that my notification tone (I picked Tejat) is just so short, that the 1-2 seconds it plays for is enough to get lost entirely as part of that initial volume ramp up.
Also have the same issue as you with the initial press of the volume control rocker as well...this issue also seems to extend to any menus that involve picking a sound file to play (like picking a ring tone). Any initial file played will always have its first few seconds lost, and then all sounds will play fine afterwards. If you exit the selection menu and go back in, same thing happens.
My guess is that the initial time an app plays a sound, the first few seconds get lost...following that, it'll play it ok. If you exit the app, it seems like this behavior is reset...which could be where it feels like the volume is inconsistent. But this overall behavior does seem like a permanent escalating ringtone "feature".
This is definitely a "feature" that's coded in the framework. There used to be an xposed module that would take care of this and turn it off. I think it's highly specialized to each individual ROM/device, but you guys that are rooted could try it and see if it makes a difference. I know I will once I get my device.
This is part of the system I think. Because when I get a message notification although is less than one second I can hear it perfectly loud and clear even with the phone "deep sleep", but when I get a call the ringtone always sounds very smooth and after one second goes louder. I think this should be an option and no a " must have"
I have the same problem with ringtones, notifications and in-app sounds, and it all started since I upgraded to Lollipop, so I don't think this is a feature, because it didn't happen on Kitkat. Also, when using Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger I noticed that the internal sounds of these apps are messed up, they sound very very quiet or they don't sound at all.
I think we should go to Motorola forums to let them know about this annoying bug.

Agreed, this has to go up to software issue. I mainly bought the X over a Nexus 5 due to the front facing speakers, it is quite a shame that the one thing I was looking forward to has a flaw on it (at least with the lollipop update).
I've noticed this issue too ever since the Lollipop update. At first I thought I had done something wrong because I couldn't find anyone else reporting the problem, but a buddy of mine said he noticed it too. I don't see how this could possibly be an intended function, as most stock notification sounds are so short that they finish before the "crescendo" actually gets to a high enough volume. It also doesn't happen on a consistent basis. I can get one notification that is perfectly loud start to finish, and the next will start super quiet or be completely inaudible.
Does anybody know if there's a support thread for this with Motorola?
I just opened up a discussion on the Moto support forums for this issue. Hopefully something comes from it.
Workaround!!!
Settings --> Sound & notification --> Audio Effects --> Turn the Equalizer OFF for the speaker.
Worked for me!

Not for me. ? Mine's been off for some time.
Hi
These two days that my M7 got very low on internal sound during incoming phone calls, at the beginning it was about 50% volume (even tho the preferences are on 100%) and now it's so low that it's maybe 5% of the volume.
That is crazy, i cant hear anything - have to be inside a closed place for it to succeed, but the funny part is that the other side can hear me great and the main speaker works perfectly when i turn it on to hear the them talking (like i have a choice).
I don't know what to do, i even did Hard reset and it didn't helped! What do i do now?
This is the original ROM, updated to last version of lollipop (even had an update today after it happened but it didn't helped neither).
Thank you

It didn't helped, tried that before i posted here, also yesterday again and nothing.
