[Q] Help with Root - Moto X Q&A

Hey all,
I'm having some trouble flashing TWRP on my phone. I've been following this guide here. When attempting to install TWRP to get root, however, it won't work. I've tried several different versions of fastboot & mfastboot. Sometimes I get a "bootloader variable not found" error, but most of the time now it exits saying it's successful. However, when I reboot into fastboot mode and then into recovery mode, it's still at the stock recovery. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
If it helps, my unlock status code shown is 3.
Thanks in advance!

Had the same issue, what I did is rsdlite back to stock and then attempt to flash twrp ,it worked.
Also make sure the twrp download is OK, you may want to re download it

Forgot to mention I got the OTA as soon as my phone turned on. So go back to stock, root and then do the OTA?

No, ota won't flash with custom recovery.
Which carrier are you on.
Try a factory reset, you will lose all your data etc, so do a backup on your computer

I didn't think it would... I'm on ATT, with a Dev edition. And no data to backup yet, just got the phone today.
Could you point me to where you got the working .img file?

Here' s the rsdlite thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2446515
I believe on your op you used another thread, that thread has I believe the link for rsdlite
Here's the firmware thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538394
Prior to setting up rsdlite make sure you have the latest moto device manager and drivers installed. Also open up the sbf file and find the XML file, open it up and delete the line that has getvar in it
I took the camera 4.2 ota and I could not flash twrp either even though my boot loader is unlocked. I won't take any more ota's , I'll just flash the firmware through rsdlite

OK, I'll use rsdlite to get back to stock, and then flash the new firmware, and then see if I can flash the twrp.img. I saw the line about deleting the getvar line, so I'll make sure I do that too... thanks for the help, I'll let you know how it goes.

It worked! It must have been because of the OTA I got immediately... but flashing the correct 4.4 worked (I downloaded it directly from Motorola, since none of those specifically said GSM Dev Edition (turned out to be the T-Mo one). SuperSU works too, now just to install TiBu and be on my merry way!

I think all the firmware files are for either retail or developer editions, anyways glad it worked. I have no idea why this happens with the ota's?

Yes it will wipe clean everything. Just like the day you bought it from VZW. You will need to root again as well.

This is a time where I wish android had a stable backup option not requiring root. Normally I use titanium backup however I'm keeping this stock. iOS has nailed this with iCloud.

One thing that I forgot to add is you need to remove the getvar line in the .xml file.
I can only say this works for VZW. Not sure about other carriers.
so can someone post that they have returned to 4.2.2 from 4.4 on a locked bootloader vzw device please. I know people said you can, or it worked or whatever. But i just want to make sure that you are on a locked device and didn't misread the thread title or something.
yeah, post screen shots of kernel, etc.
I have personally done this on my LOCKED VZW Moto X.
Works like a charm. The RSD Lite, will flash it back to factory unrooted 4.2.2. You will have to use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2509590 to reroot if you want.

This is very strange. I had read at a lot of places while updating to the camera OTA. that downgrade is not allowed..,,So now it is possible to RSD to 4.2.2 Camera OTA SBF even if we installed KitKat on a non-dev edition phone?

Steps that I took to downgrade from KitKat. VZW Moto X Consumer (non-dev) (LOCKED)
1) download and install RSDlite and Motorola Drivers (I used RSDlite 6.1.5)
2) Download http://sbfdownload.droid-developers...2-13.9.0Q2.X-116-MX-17-57-X-1_CFC_1FF.xml.zip
3) Unzip the file
4) Open the .xml file and delete the line that has "getvar"
5) Reboot your phone to "bootloader/fastboot" mode
6) Open RSDlite and load the unzipped edited download from above
7) Make sure your phone shows up
8) Start the flash
9) Once complete the phone should reboot and start up like normal.
I have not had any issues. I have rerooted with RockMyMoto.

Stock recovery

Hi,
Does anyone know where I can find the stock recovery for the Sprint Moto X? I have TWRP right now and I want to prepare for the Kit Kat update.
Its my understanding that I will need to fastboot flash the stock recovery to take the update. I don't have much faith that a flashable 4.4 rom will happen anytime soon.
Any help would be appreciated.

Well, you could consider visiting -> http://sbf.droid-developers.org/ghost/list.php See if there is a copy of the ROM your phone is currently on... If so, download it and unzip it.
And since you have TWRP installed, I'm going to say you've unlocked your bootloader, and likely rooted.. That also might impact the install of 4.4. Did you remove any bloat, mess with system files, or freeze any apps with something like Titanium Backup? That too can impact the install of 4.4.
If you're interested take a look at -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2536735

I did uninstall some apps, but not much. My plan was to reinstall the factory recovery, then factory reset before accepting the ota.
This being my first Moto device, I'm not really familiar with all this .sbf stuff. Are you saying the stock recovery would be part of it?

There was talk/speculation that when flashing the Dev edition with "non-dev" SDF/FXZ files you'd revert to a "consumer"/Locked device. I am not aware of that being confirmed as 100% true.
When I first got my Dev X, I rooted with RockMyMoto and ran for a week or so before unlocking the bootloader. At the time unlocking the boot loader voided the warranty and I wanted to make sure there were no issues before voiding the warranty. To prep for Kit Kat, I did flash it back using the only 4.2.2 SBF out there, that was for the "consumer" devices. It didn't hurt. I was still able to unlock my boot loader.
At this point, Moto does have the KK dev edition SBFs available for request on their web site if you don't trust using other SBF's. But they do appear to be the same as the "non-dev" sbf files.

Factory reset will not restore any apps you removed from the phone (i.e. if you deleted the APKs).
SBF and FXZ files are firmware files for Moto. RSDLite is the tool to fully flash an SBF or FXZ file.
The thread I linked earlier (said if you are interested... read...) has several options to return to stock, and explains options for using RSDLite to flash a full SBF/FXZ, as well as mfastboot to flash only parts of the ROM file, which will get you back to stock.
Most of the Moto updates perform checks for files, and specific versions of files before installing. If they don't match stock, or files it expects to be there are missing, the OTA wont install, or get the phone stuck in a boot loop.

[Q]Unlocked Bootloader,TWRP and 4.4.2 Update

Guys,i have Retail 1058 Moto X with unlocked Bootloader,TWRP(latest and rooted) and i want to upgrade to 4.4.2!
Some guys already received the 4.4.2 brazilian update via OTA,and extracted the zip file, but, since im on custom recovery, the OTA doesnt reboot the phone into stock and go straight to TWRP,therefore, doesnt conclude the update, and keep restarting!
Since i need the phone,i did a factory reset via TWRP just to get things going!
But,i want to upgrade to 4.4.2!
Is there a way to do that?remove TWRP ou something else?
I've seen some people saying that i need to flash the 4.4 img which it is inside the zip but,i dont have that zip anymore!
Thx in advance!

if you take the 4.4.2 update you will loose root and wont be able to get it back till who knows when.
but you need to flash your phone back to 100% stock just like you did when root your device but instead of using the 4.2.2 CU firmware use the 4.4
here is all the firmware for the Moto X
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0
your device is a Att model so you should be able to flash the ATT 4.4 firmware but im not 100% sure but maybe you will find your carrier listed there.

If he has an unlocked bootloader, why would he not be able to get root back?
I thought when the bootloader was unlocked you had free reign over the device. Shouldn't he be able to upgrade to 4.4.2 and use SU and TWRP to get root back? I don't get why he wouldn't be able to do that.

Can someone else please chime in on this? I have a Dev Edition VZW Moto X, and when the 4.4.2 update is finally available, I want to know what to do. My phone is unlocked & rooted with TWRP installed. Can I just flash the factory recovery and then take the OTA? Or do I have to revert to 100% stock? If I only flash stock recovery and take the OTA, data won't be wiped, will it? That is the big reason I would like to avoid going back to 100% stock if I can.

My hope is that someone on here will repackage the OTA for us to sideload. That would be the best case scenario.
If not, I think you just need a stock recovery, but I could be wrong. I've seen someone say you need to flash stock system as well. I have the same questions as you if we don't get a side loadable zip.

It's not the end of the world if I have to wipe data and restore everything from TiBu, but it's still a PITA I would like to avoid if possible. More importantly, I don't want to run into any issues when installed the update. So if there is any question as to whether stock recovery alone is sufficient for the update to install properly, I will probably go back to full stock to be safe. I guess I have some time to let smarter people figure it out, since there is no update for VZW yet.

What I've read is you need to go back to stock recovery and also make sure any /system files are unchanged. For example I renamed my old exchange apk's (in /system/app) when I put in the new ones from the nexus 5 on 4.4.2, so I would need to name those files back.

I guess nothing, other than TWRP, Xposed, and obviously root. I have seen several people say that you have to unroot before installed an OTA, but I don't know if that applies to the Dev X or just the standard version. A lot of people seem to indicate that you have to go back to stock, so I just want to clarify what is really required.

Good questions. I'm not sure. We certainly root differently than a non Dev edition. They might have some files modified that we don't have to modify. Also, I wonder is going to stock recovery will unroot us.
I guess we wait and stay patient.

Surely there must be a way to flash updates through TWRP?
I want to grab one of these
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0
and flash it through TWRP. Anyone know if this is possible?
Wouldn't mind 4.4.2 right now on my dev ed, to see if my bluetooth problem gets fixed.
Unfortunately you can not take the ota if
1- you have custom recovery
2- root
3- changed any system file
It will bootloop
Clearing data is always required after any ota
The only hope you have is if someone decides to take that factory image and runnit through kitchen to make it a flashable zip. You will also need the updated modem from either 4.4 or 4.4.2 to prevent system settings from fc ing
This goes for any moto, retail and or developer edition
You may also attempt to flash the sbf firmware and remove the delete userdata from the XML but no guarantee that you will not have issues
Hope that helps

To take an ota you must be stock. Meaning everything. As long as you haven't flashed an updated bootloader you can just flash system.IMG and recovery.IMG from the sbf your phone is currently on you can take an ota. A successful ota does NOT require a data wipe.

Surely there must be a way to flash updates through TWRP?
I want to grab one of these

and flash it through TWRP. Anyone know if this is possible?
Wouldn't mind 4.4.2 right now on my dev ed, to see if my bluetooth problem gets fixed.

You cannot flash any of those through twrp! If you want to flash 4.4.2 you need to fastboot the system.IMG and boot.IMG and you will need to wipe your data. If you choose this route you will not be able to take the ota when its available you'd have to wait for the sbf file to be released and update through house of moto, rsd, or fastboot.

1- you have custom recovery

some questions.. and comments...
I agree with #1. You must have STOCK recovery for an OTA to install properly. And #3, because the OTA generally has a file list with check sums to compare against what is on your device to make sure all required files are there and the correct version/size/etc before it will start to install.
#2 I have a question on as I've not had an issue with this unless the root process makes changes to system files (thus causing a problem for #3). I've lost root taking an OTA, but that is it.
Then again, I have a Dev X with unlocked bootloader, and I don't know enough about RockMyMoto, SlapMyMoto, etc was of rooting the X, except that initially they replaced the recovery partition with an image that when selected/booted allowed write to system, etc. This would cause issue with #1 (no longer have stock recovery on the recovery partition), but not sure what, if any system files get touched or altered from stock.
Finally, you mention clearing data being required... This would wipe you back to factory defaults and remove your apps/data. I don't believe its "required" but rather just suggested as it can make the device run smoother after the update is done.

Depends on how you rooted.
If you've downloaded the SBF file for the ROM on your device (if you don't have it, see if its available from -> http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0 ), you can unzip it, and fastboot flash the stock recovery from it onto your device, take the OTA, and then later fastboot flash TWRP back on and install SuperSU again to root.
This assumes you did NOT touch any system files the update will check for prior to running/installing. If you did touch system files, edit build prop, removed/renamed any APK's... then fastboot flash recovery and system before taking the OTA

HELP! Bring Verizon Moto X DE back to Stock.

I'm having a serious issue removing TWRP as the custom recovery and returning my Verizon Moto X 2013 DE back to stock (in anticipation of 5.1). Most of the links to firmware are dead now and I can't get RSD Lite to work either. Any suggestions?

I got the phone off of Ebay and it already had TWRP installed. It is running 4.4.2 and keeps asking for the OTA to 4.4.4. I should be able to download your image and pull it from my computer in TWRP, correct? Still learning my way around custom recovery.

If it is still on 4.4.2, you need the 4.4.2 image, not the 4.4.4. And no, you don't do this through TWRP, you do it through bootloader mode or RSDLite.
I no longer have the 4.4.2 image. You need to find the XT1060 4.4.2 image somewhere online. And a copy of the most recent mfastboot, which is version 2. Then boot into bootloader mode, and flash back to stock 4.4.2. Or use RSDLite, but if you don't edit the xml file, you will lose all your data.
Are you sure you are on 4.4.2? What matters is the bootloader version. What does it say in bootloader mode? 4.4.4 is bootloader version 30.B7. I believe 4.4.2 is 30.B4 but double check that. You MUST know what version of the bootloader you are running b/f you flash back to stock.
Edited:
If you flash back to stock 4.4.2, rather than take the OTA, I would use Motorola Device Manager to upgrade b/c then you would get a copy of 4.4.4 stock files on your computer.
Motorola has the stock 4.4.4 image posted on their site for the XT1060, as well as full instructions on how to return back to stock. I guess you were doing more clicking when getting the bootloader unlock code from them than reading, as they've had EVERY stock image posted for the XT1060 since stock.
If you want to directly download the files http://www.filefactory.com/folder/dd05c058d3ff8dbe/?sort=created&order=DESC&show=100&page=1
or through motorola site https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/recovery-images

I checked ... and the bootloader is 30.B7. I went to the Motorola site and requested the "MOTO X, VZW Dev Edition:KK-4.4.4-KXA21.12-L1.26.1-1 (VZW)" version of firmware. My only issue is how to get TWRP removed from the device. Each time I tried to accept the OTA ... the phone would boot to TWRP and I'd have to clear the cache. I'm new to this stuff, so I appreciate everyone's patience.

Download the stock recovery image I linked to in my dropbox account (XT1060_4.4.4_recovery.img) - that is the 4.4.4 stock recovery for the XT1060. Place the file in the same directory where you have your fastboot and adb files. Make sure USB debugging is enabled in the developer options of your settings on your phone. Then plug your phone into your PC, open a command shell, navigate to where fastboot/adb files and the XT1060_4.4.4_recovery.img are and type:
adb devices
that should give you a pop up on the phone to authorize your PC and then it should return the serial number of your device. Then type:
adb reboot bootloader
to boot into bootloader mode. Then type:
fastboot flash recovery XT1060_4.4.4_recovery.img

Ok so for Dev Eds, Motorola will give you the factory images. My advice is to use MDM to update so you will have it on your computer regardless. If you find the MDM annoying, then you can uninstall it. The nice thing about MDM is it installs the drivers for you too. Many people have issues installing the drives and this does it for you.
Another benefit of MDM is that if you soft brick your device but still can get into bootloader mode, MDM will repair your phone for you. You just connect your phone in bootloader mode to your computer and start MDM and it does it automatically. So I not only don't find MDM annoying, I find it useful.
If you are a Recognized Developer on XDA, then you obviously know what you are doing and don't need a program like MDM to help you when you get into a bad situation. For the rest of us mere mortals, IMO, MDM is nice to have. You not only get the images on your computer automatically, it installs the drivers for you and can repair your device if you soft brick your phone.

When did we start talking about the 2nd generation phone in the first gen forums? Had I known we were on the 2014 X, then yes, you need another method to get the stock image. If you are, you know, on a device actually related to this subforum, and it is a XT1060 or XT1053 (I think that's right), then just download the stock images from Motorola.

[Q] XT1053 TMO possible brick - help please

Hi
Unlocked bootloader, rooted. I'd had some issues with my phone and thought it was a smart idea to do a full wipe and start completely from scratch. I'd done this before and had not had issues. This time round, not to much.
The link to the factory images on droid developers seems down to me. I wasn't 100% sure which version below I should be requesting from the motorola site?
When i tried to install what I thought was a good ROM, it kept saying 'unable to mount /cache /system' and other similar errors. This was when flashing in fastboot. i also tried RSDLite but it came up with an error 'rsd lite failed flashing process unknown fastboot command'.
My questions are:
1. Which version is the correct one for my first gen moto X TMobile edition?
2. When I get the correct version, will the above errors go away or is there some other issue?
Thanks in advance. I've tried to include as much detail as possible.

You can use all of the above IF your device is XT1053 (Developer Edition). The first one is for Lollipop 5.1. 2nd, 3rd and 4th is for Kitkat with different version. The last one is JellyBean (Androind version 4.2.2). The choice is yours.

Thank you. I don't have developers but I read that its OK to use this on a non-dev edition. As they don't post images for non-dev editions that might be my only choice. I tried one here but the errors I mentioned came up TMO_RETAIL_XT1053_4.4-13.11.1Q2.X-69-3_MR2_CFC
Do you think the errors I saw are related to installing the wrong version or something else?

It could be wrong version or the file you used. Follow the steps from below link.
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/recovery-images
I followed the steps from the link to the letter. I still got the same errors, and when I reboot it still just gets stuck at the 'warning bootloader' white and red screen, and never gets into the boot sequence for Android.
I tried both the 4.4 and the 5.1 GSM versions, and neither worked.
I pasted the errors I a seeing in the hope that someone can help

All the SBF files listed in OP are for Dev Edition and TMO. I used 5.1 for my XT1053. If you can go to fastboot and install TWRP, you haven't bricked yet. Tell me:
1) Which version were you in BEFORE trying the fastboot?
2) Which SBF file version did you try to flash using fastboot?
3) What is your Bootloader version. When you press Power + Vol Down and go to BL screen with Recovery etc options listed, check the no. at the top. It should be something like 30.BE (BE is the latest. you can have different version).
4) DO NOT use fastboot. You need to use 'mfastboot' for large system files. Search for 'mfastboot' in XDA. When you tried the fastboot method, did you get any errors especially with the system.img file?
Thanks, responses below

Good news! OMG I nearly cried when I saw the blue Motorola logo appear!!!
Bad news! But ugh I now have the dreaded 'wifi switch won't go on' issue. This is actually one of the reasons I formatted it in the first place! So i can't get it set up at all. Tried a reboot and the same issue.
Should I try a newer ROM (such as 5.1) and see if that fixes the issue? I hope this doesn't cause bootloader issues..! I'm so over being on the fastboot screen
Panic ye not. A cache clear in bootloader seems (for the moment) to have fixed the wifi issue.
Cool. So you are on 4.4.4 now? I didn't have any WiFi issues and don't know about that. Maybe you will find something on XDA.
And yeah you can use the 5.1 SBF file to upgrade. Your BL will be upgraded to 3.0BE after which you can't downgrade the BL. Aren't you getting any OTA updates asking you to install 5.1?

Thanks, yes. I'm not seeing any OTA updates to go to 5.1, which is weird. I don't yet have the TMo sim card installed, perhaps that's the reason? I'm adding a line so need to pick it up today. Perhaps it does some OTA check with the network before pushing it, to make sure its the right version. I'd prefer the OTA upgrade of course
Thanks again, I did the thanks button things. :good::good:
I read somewhere (not XDA) one person got OTA without having a sim card. Anyway, if you want to go to 5.1, I would say SBF method is the best. BTW, 5.1 hasn't been kind to me. I have a thread wherein I have posted the issue about Android optimizing all my apps on every reboot taking the boot time to 10-15 mins. Many ppl r having this issue. So it's up to you if you want to upgrade. And thanks

Thanks again Hitdroid. I'll see if the OTA takes once I get the SIM, else go to SBF method.
