[MOD] On-Screen Navigation Bar - Droid Ultra Android Development

This mod enables the nav bar on the Droid Maxx (and proably the Droid Ultra), disables the capacitive buttons. And i recommend installing the app from the link below.
This mod uses the framework-res.apk from after Software Update 1 (12.15.15 for the Maxx). I do not know if it will work on the earlier verison.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2350732
!!!! THIS NOT A FLASHABLE ZIP !!!!
But, it is pretty straight forward. Unzip, read the "read me", and follow the install instructions.
If anyone would like to help and show me how to make this SafeStrap flashable I would really appreciate the help. And it will allow this mod and future mod to be more user friendly.

Your instruction in the readme is a little off, "cp /sdcard/framework-res.apk /system/framework/" should read "cp /sdcard/framework-res.apk /system/framework/framework-res.apk".
Otherwise, it did enable the bar, but did not disable the capacitative keys. Also, if anyone uses the long press on recents for menu key emulation, it does not work on the on screen buttons.
Finally, you can use the shell command "echo 0 > /sys/class/leds/nutton-backlight/brightness" without the quotes to turn off the capacitative lights, instead of using the app linked.
Otherwise, thanks for the mod! I'm kinda a fan of the onscreen buttons, just haven't had the time to figure it out myself.

Here is an attempt at a flashable zip, haven't done one in a while and can't test as I don't use safestrap atm.
Feel free to test at your own risk, the most likely error is that it won't mount system correctly, in which case it won't install anything. In that case, just mount system manually and try again.

its a modd of maxx framework-res.apk from the maxx, i doubt i would work on the mini. older maxx/ultra builds, maybe. i dont have one running it to test. if you need it for the mini ill do one if you upload your framework-res.apk.

I made an xposed module that will do it.
Here you guys go:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/wjyh62fckhqi2jc/com.geekmod.shownav3_1.apk
Also, you can rename /system/lib/hw/ lights.msm8960.so to lights.msm8960.so.bak to disable the lights on the factory keys if you want to.

Works great, just a half black nav bar background but i am sure I can make the transparent myself. I think the half black is my launcher, switching it changes the height.

Check the OP for the 4.4 zip. I flashed the framework and it works great! I have shownav installed. Not sure about getting rid of the lights. I still use my hardware and virtual buttons, so I didn't change those.

Cool, I just have a Droid mini so I would need the xposed app. Unless the OP wants to put out a little tutorial on the framework edits. I can do it myself.

Its super easy. Decompile, go to res/values/bools.xml, find line that has show navigation bar change to true, then find show menu bar and change to false. That's it.

Either make widget for one touch system bar removel or make a shortcut for desktop to make a one touch system bar removal.
What do you think about that??
Great app as I said before.

The best solution would be, that the statusbar disappears, when you swipe down on the screen , and appears if you swipe up.

There was a request to get the ICS SoftKeys working.
I also wanted to experiment with the softkeys and doing some mods and theming.
So I present the Enable ICS SoftKeys CM9-Beta0 Mod.
Flash the Zip and Clear Cache.
Enjoy
This is setup so the Capacitive Buttons will turn off approx 2 seconds after screen on(***MUST BE ON AUTO BRIGHTNESS***)
The lights will not come back on unless the Capacitive Buttons are touched. Hope this helps.
**I am not responsible if you phone breaks**
Also: Lets thank our great devs for the work they do!
The OG Epic is a great phone and they just keep making it better!
Great job CM Team!
ToDo:
Turn off backlight for Capacitive buttons?

I'd like to know this as well. Practically speaking if just dimming the hardware buttons saves battery then disabling them completely and using software keys should be even better. Also it looks nicer imo.
A question about that clock. Which one are you using? I have the Beautiful Widgets one, but none of the skins are "beautiful". Yeah yeah, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I've been scoping some of the clocks around the Epic forum & there are some good looking ones .

[Tweak] How to remove the softkeys/navbar WITHOUT remove the statusbar.

Edit your build.prop and add this line:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
It's cool if you like to use LMT or PIE, that permit to use the full screen and keep the statusbar features.
Need a reboot.
Don't use "expand desktop" option.
Off course, activate another Softkeys/navbar solution (LMT,PIE...) BEFORE add the line in the build.prop !
LMT : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330150
PIE is roughly the same (less functions) as LMT and it's directly inculded in PA, RootBox...
Please report how it work on other ROM/Kernel.
Edit : Now using PA, just go to Settings/Hybrid Property/Interface dans set Nav. Bar to 0.
That do the trick.
Enjoy
Thanks, didn't think it was that easy.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Thank you for this. Great information. Sadly can't access that file yet until I am rooted, but I do look forward to it.
in pa you simply set navbar to 0%. done. no reboot needed. and pie is not part of lmt. lmt is a ready made google control tweaked a bit. pie is an open source control written from scratch. everything that goes beyond simple navigation is pie and was pies from the beginning. lmt took/replicated some of these ideas now, but please someone stop that meme already, i seriously cant see it anymore. everyday lmt gets another idea from us and people then come and say we got it from them is like a kick in the kneecap.

Doesnt make a difference in PA, same effect as setting the nav bar to 0% in PA settings the issue I have is that PIE works in basic mode where there is only the buttons no notifications when I activate it. Would rather have that function as I liked that part of it .

I use Button Savior with this line added to system/build.prop "qemu.hw.mainkeys=1". Works like a charm. Button Savior is available at https://play.google.com/store/search?q=button+savior and provides hidden soft keys navigation available with a simple swipe or by clicking an app icon. Works with any launcher.

[APKs] The KitKat we didn't get

Nothing special here, just a couple of apks to get us closer to the correct KitKat look.
There is an updated MotLauncher2.apk that has the transparent status bar enabled. In addition, it was modified to remove the dock divider, and use the KitKat apps icon. Also, a 5th icon row was added, but over(under)laps the QSB making it unusable. I only made the change to fix the uneven spacing of the stock 4 row launcher.
There is also an updated SystemUI.apk that replaces the awful signal icons VZW stuffs down our throats with the stock icons from KitKat. All of the other status bar changes were accomplished with Xposed and GravityBox. It should be noted, stock only uses a 4 bar signal, so technically I cheated and used the 4bar for both level 4 and 5.
I am not responsible if you can't follow instructions and brick or otherwise render your phone inoperable!
You must be rooted and on KitKat.
How to install:
Download files
Reboot into Safestrap
Make a backup (just in case)
Select Mount and check System
Open a command prompt (terminal) and navigate to location of downloaded files
Code:
adb shell
rm /system/priv-app/MotLauncher2.apk
rm /system/priv-app/MotLauncher2.odex
rm /system/priv-app/SystemUI.apk
rm /system/priv-app/SystemUI.odex
adb push MotLauncher2.apk /system/priv-app
adb push SystemUI.apk /system/priv-app
adb shell chmod 644 /system/priv-app/MotLauncher2.apk
adb shell chmod 644 /system/priv-app/SystemUI.apk
Reboot
This was something I did for myself. I will not be making any other modifications or make any custom versions of these so please don't ask. I will attempt to assist anyone having trouble getting it on their system, but it's pretty straight forward and I'm not in the habit of hand-holding.
Enjoy!
MotLauncher2.apk
SystemUI.apk

Can I ask what mods you did to SystemUI to get the AOSP look? I want to do my own mod, but changing the same bools.xml values as I've been doing for the Moto X hasn't worked out completely, and still left me with the ugly huge space next to the signal bars. Also, did you find what makes the icons continue to turn blue and show activity arrows like on JB? Thanks!
Replaced all the drawables with the stock ones from kitkat. The vzw versions are wider, which is why you get the ugly gap.
As far as them turning blue, that is gone from kitkat, but if you use the JB icons, you can emulate the functionality. To make it "really" work like JB, you'd have to rewrite the network controller classes. They were heavily modified for the vzw icons to work.

Next to the signal bars, the extra space for signal icon or letter such as "H" or "E". In your screenshots it's gone like on Nexus phones and stock KitKat, but flashing the SystemUI from the OP leaves me with it

Well, those screenshots were taken with the systemui in the OP, so I'm not sure the problem. Are you on a carrier other than Verizon or running in global mode or something?

Yeah, I'm on Straight Talk. You really think that's the problem? Seems to me an edit like this would apply to the phone regardless of which carrier I'm on, or no?

I only made the changes to 1x, 3g, and the LTE drawables. If you're getting different data types, they won't have changed.

Oh I see. What are the default ones named? There are so many in the drawables folder that I'm hopelessly confused...

I don't have any idea on non-vzw networks. You should be able to just look at them and see what matches up to what you see in the status bar.

If you adapt the mod to straight talk, let me know. I'd like to flash it on my droid mini on AT&T.

MOD IDEA to smooth one hand usability

Picture attached will explains it very well.
A little NAV bar tweak will do it all.
what do you think guys?
I am not a dev and i don't know how to do it.

LG devices have already had this feature for a while.
I'm sure we'll see something similar in custom roms soon. But if the one hand use is so troublesome, why not just go to pie controls? Easy to do with root.

yeah, I am not fan of it, but i will give it a try. Very nice to have the options. What is a good free tested app to hide soft keys?

Don't need an app - just modify your build prop and add the following line :
qemu.hw.mainkeys=1

Man, you made it sound as easy as click of a button. I don't understand any of these languages. I only do them if there are instructions, otherwise, forget about it.
Anyway, a free app called UDN lite does the job for me. Then, installed Pie Control and everything is working great.
Conclusion, still want to modify nav bar like in the pic attached above
Thanks for your suggestion BTW!
Modifying build prop is easy to do and a lot cleaner than getting an app to do it. Lmt launcher is a good app for pie controls with a good amount of customization. The app is here on xda
Personally, I DO use build.prop to hide Nav bar, however - its not for the un-initiated. An app may be better. Factory reset can be a pain with build.prop hidden navbar
We have that feature on a nexus 9 ROM called lolipopalooza. Comes in really handy. Dev is craigcgomez. Really smooth ROM too.
This would be a great mod to have anyone heard of any progress?
@bassil2022 check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2996168 I made a request with the dev and I think he may try and put this in his work. He does some awesome work with this modpack he created. It works flawlessly!
I have my navbar hidden by editing build.prop and use Pie https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jun.ace.piecontrol&hl=en
Of course I have it set to a soothing transparent black and not that ugly green. I love it. Easy one hand navigation with just your thumb.

I've used pie control before but I always seem to activate it accidentally while doing other task.

When hitting the spacebar on the keyboard I used to accidentally activate it (I have it only enabled on the bottom edge). But I lowered the activation area dpi and it works well for me now. It's definitely not on par with GravityBox's Pie Control, but until the xposed framework is updated for Lollipop, it works for me.
