I converted dozens of videos last night narrowing down exactly what works and what doesn't. The short story is only stock Android formats are supported natively and only up to about 4000Kbps bitrate (possibly higher with a MIMO router). These files will play using Fling (v0.3) from PC, or both locally and remotely using AllCast (v1.0.0.2) from an android device.
.MP4, .M4V, .MKV using the H264 Level 4.1+ codec
.WEBM using the VP8 codec
I couldn't get the transcoding feature of Fling to work at all it, tried with VLC 2.0.8 and 2.1.1. Someone else can chime in if they know the solution to getting transcoding working.

thanks! I am using it now and it works, I think I had 0.4 before I deleted it or something like that.

If you have this working for sure, can you tell me what kind of codecs you have installed on your computer?
I could not get transcoding to work at all.. What version of vlc do you have, what os type is it? I spent hours and wasn't able to play avi files. Just gave up after 5 hours

Same here..only thing that works 95% of the time is a mp4 file. No luck here with anything else. Also, I'm always getting that dreaded large black bar at the bottom of my video on the screen, with no bar at all up top..kinda annoying!

Leon said the whole transcoding part was very, very experimental.
The long and short is that like any other media player appliance, most times you'll need to transcode content to get it to play properly.
Things will get better for everyone once Plex arrives.

Just finished rewriting it to transcode into MP4 format instead of WEBM, but i'm at work and will have to wait till I get home tonight to test. I'll throw an update up once i've tested one way or another.
EDIT: Transcoding on Fling is still broken, I was able to get it to run with no errors in both WEBM and MP4 format, but MP4 would still show just a black screen, and WEBM would only do audio. Good news though, Avia and Plex apps announced today make this obsolete.

You're welcome. Also hope you saw that aVia supports Chromecast (can't wait to try it when I get home!) and there are bunch of other applications announced including Plex.

Plex announced it yesterday, but at the moment only Plex-Pass users can use it.
Installed the update, but the app crashed on both the phone & Nexus7
Reverted back to backup

For .avi files I just use the chrome interface for plex, add the media to local plex library, and cast the chrome tab while it's playing the .avi file.

There was an issue with the initial release. Re Update to 3.2.1 and the problem is fixed.
As for what file/format works best....
Encode in H.264 Codec MP4. Keep the Video Bitrate lower than 4000. Should play well on any Video player that has CCast support.
Don't assume that because your Android device can play the file that CCast can. Your Android device has a much better processor than your Chromecast does!
And the variety of players available for Android play far more video types than the Chromecast does and will mislead you into thinking it will work!

Playing the video in the browser with Plex and then casting that works great.
Yea but native plex will be better. In my case my pc is not near my bedroom TV with the Chromecast so I would have to get up walk all the way to the pc bla bla to get it done like that.
I'm not putting casting down because it's been quite smooth for me put I can't wait for native plex.

i'd like a casting button to be built into mx player. that way, i can can browse samba shares from my server/nas from es file explorer and play the video with mx player, then cast to the screen. is that possible?

I do something similar with the BubbleUPnP app. My Dish Hopper and Asus Cube are DLNA capable so I choose one of those as my rendering device. Then I pick my shared videos as the source. The built-in media players of the Hopper and Cube then play the files over my local network that I select on my tablet. This also works for files on my tablet if I choose that as a source. I don't think this will work with Chromecast, though, as it is not DLNA capable nor does it support many codecs out of the gate.
When the Chromecast service gets pushed to the Google TV devices this fall, they will fill most everyone's needs. It will give the DLNA support for local files and the internet streaming capabilities of Chromecast with device control. If they also make a mobile PrimeTime app, then you will no longer need to use D-pad navigation for large libraries or channel guides.

Fling Any media files to Chromecast from PC Download

Fling is the latest in a string of applications designed to stream content to Google’s Chromecast device. Fling is a Java application (so it will work on pretty much every platform) that streams media content directly to Chromecast from your PC. Technically, it is possible to do this anyway, but it requires opening the video or song you want to stream in a Chrome tab, and then casting that tab to the device. Fling does away with that nonsense though, allowing for media to be dragged-and-dropped into the application, whereupon it will begin streaming to the Chromecast.

MKV works great! Streaming from my NAS box now. However, the black line for 16:9 is only on top, and picture is at bottom of screen.
However, there is no way to fast forward or rewind.
Wow, this works wonderfully!

Also, you can use the andoid app remotecast https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.benlc.camcast to pause and adjust volume from your phone.

add height=480 and width=760 to your perameters. This will mess with your aspect ratio but it's the only solution I've found. If you can transcode HD then try 720x1280

I don't understand. This isn't working at all for me. Tried both Chromecasts I have on different TVs, but every video file (AVIs and MP4) I try does nothing on the app or on the TV. Sometimes I see a track time start running on the app, but still, nothing but the ready to cast screen TV...
Did I miss something? Running Win8.
I also just updated VLC and still doesn't cast anything at all.
Also, does the config.properties file that creates automatically have to stay in the same location as the .jar file? Do we need to keep this at all?

I don't expect to see anything on the app, but most of the times, the counter for the movie never starts, and even when it does eventually, nothing ever shows up what so ever on the TV. So forget a 10-second delay, I've waited minutes and nothing lol.
Also I noticed that sometimes after loading the .jar, it only finds one Chromecast instead of my 2, or it finds NONE- until I hit refresh.
Ya I can't get it to work either for any video formats. It finds my Chromecast, but when I drag a file, my TV just goes black.

Yes, in the videos I tried, both pause and then play to re-start worked.
Jumping forward/back doesn't work though.
In my test most videos pause like aircast and cheap cast. Fast Internet connection but I just don't think chromecast was built to stream media over local area networks without issues... But what do I know.

Hey all.
I tried using Chromecast today and it just isn't the same anymore.
When trying to play a "Personal Video" there's no option to stream it to the TV.
The only available icon is to share the video, which I did by accident, and now everything is being shared on Google Plus and I can't seem to find a way for this to stop either.
I'm using a Nexus 10, firmware 4.3, and it's not rooted.
Any help or ideas on what has changed recently?
Sees chromecast from ubuntu, nothing on windows
Fling doesn't find my chromecast using windows. but sees it using ubuntu. However nothing plays.
This is sweet!

May change (it seems they've actively adding/changing things) but as of a day or two ago, Avia's FAQ says this is not supported. There is a note about DLNA, if the subtitle file is already on the receiving device, and I have no clue if/how that would work for Chromecast, especially since Chromecast is not (yet) a DLNA receiver.
Subtitles are usually rendered on the Player side either from within the stream or via external file like a .srt.
I don't think CCast can ever fully support external .srt since it has no real filesystem of it's own to load the file from.
But the player app could be coded to show subs that are encoded into an MKV or other container that supports embedded SubTitles.
It might be possible that some sources could encode external SRTs into a stream going to a CCast which would probably be what aVia is doing.
Not sure if Plex does this at all since all of my content that requires Subs has been hardcoded into the video by me when encoded for storage on my server.
Plex does however seem to support putting subs into it's transcoded files if the Transcode profile definition is being read correctly by me...
Not sure if that feature is supported on their current CCast player app they are using.
I use handbrake to encode all my videos and set the subtitle option to burned in so I can watch subed anime on my chromecast.

Yup, this seems to be what HBO GO does, unless they have a really precise way of switching Chromecast from one stream to another (possible, that's what streaming media servers do).
I really appreciate the caption support there - makes the late-night viewing much easier, plus my hearing is poor these days.

It's really the best way to do it...The Text from a subtitle adds little to nothing to the Bitrate of a transferring stream, and Why store two versions when you can send one and let the client side decide to use it or not.
The only reason to use a SRT file is if the Video Container doesn't support an embedded Sub stream that can be shut off or if you need a Subtitle for a language not embedded in the Video container. No way to put every language into one Video file.
At least not yet! LOL

I don't think Handbrake supports hardcoding subs.
It does support adding subtitle tracks but I don't see an option to hardcode subs at all...
I admit though that I don't use Handbrake unless my main converter has an issue with a file...
I use Xilisoft since it supports hardcoding subs and I don't need to have multiple subtitle and audio tracks for my library.

I understand that the MKV can not see the subtitles .. but within the mp4 subtitles should be visible, Chromcast handles subtitles, do not believe me? look at this Youtube video Coca-Cola Social Media Guard
Put the subtitle to ON, do not you like the look? Click Options and choose the size you want, the color you want and the background color you want.
For example from the BubbleUPnP program should bring the option to turn ON the subtitles in the MP4, etc.

Still the case. The CC end doesn't support MKV so it's up to the player/ source end to unwrap it, determine what to send and transcode if necessary.

Chromecast supports MKV natively very well as long as it contains supported codecs.
Thanks for the replies guys. Not gonna have a PC for a while, and I hate being so limited. I'll look for proper codecs til I come into cash for a new pc.

Lots of confusion about MKV regarding CCast.
I was under the impression that MKV will STREAM on CCast, it won't direct play but it can be streamed to it easily using MPEG-DASH. Because Streaming a file this way pretty much strips the container entirely and just sends Video and Audio tracks in whatever codec was used inside the container. The CCast has no idea it's actually playing an MKV file so if the Codecs are compatible it will have no problem.
There is no device I know of that supports MKV natively though Hardware decoder. All devices that support it have software decoding and other MKV feature support built into the player itself or require Transcoding.
I know Plex is currently transmuxing and streaming MKV to CCast which is why they now work there.
But I'm betting your Bubble player on the CCast side is much better than theirs is as far as handling containers.
So maybe you can direct play codec compatible files where others need to send via DASH.
In the end the best way to handle MKV would be to have the Player handle most of the features so the only time external help is needed is to flip incompatible codecs.
And by features I mean the following:
Client side Subtitle rendering and selection (difficult on CCast with SRT but easier with Internal Subtitle tracks of MKV)
Audio Track selection
Chapter support
At least until Google adds this capability into the next Gen CCast OS.
one way is to convert your mkv software subtitles to mkv hardware subtitles
I believe the MKVToolsNix package has a tool called MKVMERGE that will insert SRT files into an MKV as a subtitle track.
Just be sure to test the external subtitle to be sure it's good before you do or you could make a mess.
This is one of those must have packages for anyone who like to play in the MKV universe.

BubbleUPNP doesnt start to play video

Hi everyone,
just installed my sweet new chromecast, but running into a few problems,,
I've installed bubbleupnp on my Windows 8.1 and also on my nexus 5. I can browse the library on my pc (allthough I haven't quite figured out how to include or exclude some folders) and I can also click to play the files on my nexus 5. The nthe BubbleUPNP screen on my TV (via chromecast) does load....but I can't see any picture of the video and the video doesn't start playing.
Does anyone know the solution to this`?

Likely your media is not compatible with Chromecast.
Install BubbleUPnP server on your PC and enable the transcoding option in BubbleUPnP.
is this the setting you mean?
Done that, didn't help :/
when i use my phone as renderer, most files play back just fine. Yeah, I guess it hast to do with the format of the files also...but just can't solve it yet :/
edit: So with an MKV (just a few, not all) it just worked (bubbleupnp on tv brought up the loading bar and then the file started playing).
with .avi it doesn't seem to work. is there any solution to this?

Can you check your CPU workload during transcoding? It might no be able to handle it. If so you can try changing your transcoding settings to increase performance.

I did, and I now also enabled transcoding under the "networks and settings" menu in settings...most MKVs seem to work fine by now, still no luck with .AVI though...

Most MKVs contain MPEG-4 video, so they require little/no readjustment.
AVIs, on the other hand, come from the early days of Windows 3.11 when only a handful of CODECs were included and MPEG-4 wasn't born yet (IIRC MPEG-2 was being standardized at the time).
Most times AVIs will require some kind of trancoding, because few people put MPEG-4 in an AVI, unless it's DivX.

I understand, and as far as I can tell by now I have checked all options for transcoding, but nothing's really happening yet. Do you have any more tipps as to how I could make this work?

Sorry, I haven't quite reached that stage in my setup yet, I just know a lot about video and transcoding.
At the moment HandBrake is chugging away at my library of ~1400 files, conforming them to MPEG-4 for Chromecast as well as other target use.
At current run rate it's going to take 2-3 weeks.
Have you tried casting from the browser to the CCast on the Win8 Machine?
It could be a communication problem on the Win8 side of things...
The Bubble App on android is what would trigger the player to display on the CCast side but if transcoding is needed the stream would be coming from the Win8 Machine and that wouldn't happen if the Win8 machine can't communicate with the CCast properly.
Try using the Cast a tab in Googlcast Chrome and make sure the Win8 Machine sees the device at all....
If it doesn't see it make sure to enable IPv6 in your Network settings of Win8 and Router (not sure why but Google suggests this as a solution)
If it does see it and can stream a tab then there is something else going on and we will have to look into other aspects of it.
after that try to disable the firewall in Win8 and see if that helps...If so then you need to open up some ports for Bubble on the Win8 Firewall.
BTW have I expressed lately how much I despise Windows 8? LOL

As I said, casting most MKVs (not all) works just fine, as well as casting youtube videos and chrome tabs. all good. it's just some MKVs and AVIs in general that don't work with bubbleupnp
I was testing the free version of BubbleUPNP as well and I found out that I could cast a video taken with my phone but an other video, also taken with my phone wasn't casting. It kept going with the progress bar on my TV and after a few minutes the screen went black.
I assume that the camera of my phone always records in the same format and always in full HD, so it is very strange one short clip works and an other short (less than a minute) clip doesn't...
I did not try with the server or a PC

Hi everyone,
just installed my sweet new chromecast, but running into a few problems,,
I've installed bubbleupnp on my Windows 8.1 and also on my nexus 5. I can browse the library on my pc (allthough I haven't quite figured out how to include or exclude some folders) and I can also click to play the files on my nexus 5. The nthe BubbleUPNP screen on my TV (via chromecast) does load....but I can't see any picture of the video and the video doesn't start playing.
Does anyone know the solution to this`?

What is the media server that you use on your PC to access your videos ?
It if it Windows Media layer (WMP), there is a known issue on some setups where no video will play to Chromecast. This is specific to WMP.
Until I find the cause it is recommended to use any other media server, such as Serviio.
I'm having a similar problem, but in Ubuntu 14.04. I followed the instructions on the BubbleUpnp site to get BubbleUpnp server installed. I use PS3 Media Server. For some reason, I can't stream any video files to my Chromecast using BubbleUpnp, even mkv ones. A progress bar flashes on my TV screen for a split second and then nothing happens. Any ideas?

@bhaskarchawla
I really do not recommend using PS3 media server. I suggest trying Serviio.
I had the same problem playing MP4 format. Transcoding is enabled in the server and remote transcoding is indicated. Played on Chromecast with BubbleUPnP on Android, the video starts to load, but stops and return to the background screen. Serviio media server.

ViCast HD Chromecast player with transcoding.

Yes, it does
i tested the app.
only video, no audio. apparently it wont transcode on-the-fly like the app "MegaCast".
no reason from my side to use your app, unless you can do better on-the-fly transcoding, for example just transcode the audio stream and pass through the video stream.
THAT would be a reason to use your app!
it was 1080p h264 + dual language ac3 (i guess) in mkv.

Hi, Purah
Thank you for your review.
Did you cast some local video from your device, or you used DLNA server? And what chromecast version you are using?
Actually ViCast does audio only transcoding when it is possible and it looks like your file is a case. There is a known issue with ChromecastUltra which may lead to behaviour that you have described. We will add this note to the description.
Could you please provide us the file which you have tried to cast?

Excellent App
I have been searching for some time for an app to cast my mkv files with ac3 audio. Megacast trancodes but was dropping out part way through. Finally found vicast and it works perfectly. Thanks. Should ask will you be releasing a paid version to get rid of those annoying ads?

Hi, Thank you for the review
We are currently working on the paid version.
Why cannot i cast movie codec bluray.h264.aac.mp4 from my tablet to tv. On tablet it works perfectly.
Hi,
I've got this "HuiHeng WiFi Display Dongle", which is supposed to do Airplay, DLNA and Miracast. However it has very poor decoding capabilities. As a result, almost none of my local video files can be casted to this device.
My question is, is ViCast compatible with DLNA and/or Airplay? If not, do you have any plans to include DLNA support in the near future? Willing to pay for a reliable transcoding app for DLNA.
Thanks in advance for your time

I'm was planning to buy a Chromecast today to take away with me on my upcoming one month South America trip but the majority of my media is in MKV format, mostly x264 and more recently x265. if viCast can do x264 MKV then I will definitely give it a try. But can ViCast do x265 yet? If not, is this something you think will be possible? Recently I have started only encoding or downloading x265 files due to their tiny size so if I could cast those via the Chromecast I'd be a very happy camper.
Also, is your app able to find and view videos files in hidden folders (ones prefixed with a dot)? My kids use my phone quite a bit so I want to make sure any unsuitable TV shows or movies (or any other, ahem, "adult oriented videos") I might have cannot be viewed by them.
If it doesn't can I make a suggestion? I've seen so many people also request this in other apps - basically you allow support for hidden files and folders but password protect it so even if my 5 year old starts ViCast they can only see the vids in the main Google/OS Videos folder. But if I wanted to watch hidden files I could enter the password (entered during setup) and it would list them and allow me to play them. What do you think?
Superb app! Keep up the good work..
May i have one suggestion though? Please add a video zoom option so that any video size can be zoomed to fill up any screen from where it is watched ?
I have installed de this app but it's not working on Android 9. Every time i tried to cast something the app simply closes itself. The developers still suport the app?
