Okay I am having some problems. I upgraded from the Cyanogen 7 Alpha 3.5 to the new Cyanogen 9 0.6 using the lilputing (spell?) instructions to the letter. Everything upgraded and installed just fine but when it booted up I got a picture asking for pin code/pass code with a numbered keypad.
I don't have a pass code or pin on my TouchPad. What am I supposed to enter here??? Please someone HELP ME so I can have my TouchPad back! Thanks and hope someone can help me SOON! I don't want to wipe the data as I don't want to loose all my apps and games I put on there when I had 7. Is there anything else I can do??? I am anxious to try Cyanogen 9 after hearing so many GOOD things about it! THANKS DEVELOPERS!
sorry but dont think its possible to go from cm7 to cm9 and keep your apps and data.
some wont work on ICS anyway.
Actually according to RootzWiki here: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/15509-releasealpha06-cyanogenmod-9-touchpad/ it states you can do it. My Mother was able to upgrade from 7 (Alpha 3.5) to 9 (Alpha 0.6) without any problems. I just can't figure why it would work on one TouchPad but not another.
There is. When i upgraded mine, i did not lose my apps and data. What i did is I ran the novacom acmeuninstaller2 script in dos prompt and made sure i have the zip file inside the cminstall folder in my tp.

I was able to jump from CM7 to CM9 via an upgrade. However, you might want to invest in Titanium Backup to be able to easily do a complete wipe and easy restore. It is a great product for "ROM jumpers"
I was also able to make the jump, but it made me reinstall almost all of my apps before they would work again anyway. Thankfully I was able to use Amazon for them, as the Market forgot what free apps I had...
I use Astro app backup for my touchpad. It doesn't back up data, but I like it that way, fresh install.
You could try reinstalling CM7, and see if it will boot, then back up your apps, wipe and install CM9. I use Titanium Backup on my phone, but on the TP it was spotty which ROMs would let it open. Because Astro doesn't need root it always works.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
Has anyone tried ROM Toolbox to see if it was any more compatible than Titanium Backup is. I would personally recommend a clean install to make sure no bugs are caused by leftover applications. To each his own though.
They say on rootzwiki that if you use the acmeinstaller2 you shouldn't have any problems upgrading

I am running cm9 a2 on my touch pad and would like to know how I would go about flashing the latest nightly which now include everything in alpha 2. I gather you can't flash from from rom manager. Also where do I get the latest nightlies? Any help would be appreciated.

Do a search in the dev forum for 'nightlies'. In the thread you'll find the download link, I think it's 'terrachata'. Install the file with cwm. (install zip > choose zip from sdcard). Do a wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache beforehand . If coming from cm9 alpha 2, no need to wipe/delete data, factory reset.

Absolutely no need to wipe anything.
I've flashed each nightly "over the top" of the previous version without any problem.
You can use Rom Manager to flash. Just tell it to use the existing version of CWM when it asks and check the version you have manually installed either 2 or 3 and away you go.
Then you can install all zip updates and mods the same way.
Check out buildprop-supreme-rohan-v1.1 for some cool tweaks including 120dpi screen settings.

With any android system, you should ALWAYS wipe at least cache and dalvik after flashing a rom update. It only takes 5 seconds, and can help you avoid big issues.
You can use Rom Manager to flash.

DON'T use Rom Manager to flash roms, it's just a bad idea. Many devices have been bricked because of that app. Just boot into recovery, install the zip, and wipe cache and dalvik. It only takes an extra 30 seconds to do it through recovery, and will make it so you don't have any issues.

Thanks for all the great advice! It would be nice to have a thread about the stability of the latest nightlies before you do a flash. How do you do a nandroid backup before an update? Does it take a lot of space? How do you do a restore if all doesn't go well?

Boot into recovery, and before doing anything else, go to Backup and Restore, then hit Backup. Backups will probably take about 600mb or so, more if you have a lot of apps on there. You only need to keep one backup on the device, and you can copy the backup off the memory onto a computer if you want to save space.

The same way you would flash a rom. Boot into recovery, wipe data/cache/dalvik, then go to backup and restore, and hit restore.
I hate being a NOOB about this...I know there is a changelog that you can find here: http://review.cyanogenmod.com/#q,status:merged+branch:ics,n,z
My question is does anyone know where I can find a less complex or more simple explanation (for us noobs that doesn't understand computerish sometimes! ) of what changes they have made to the nightlies?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Sorry again for the very noob question!

The nightlies are basically compiled each night from the cm9 source. Its an automated process so the changes are what was changed in the cm source in the last 24 hours. Usually its nothing major, if its something big you'll probably see an alpha posted on rootzwiki.

I'm interested in moving my backup from my touchpad to my computer to save space, however, my "backups" folder is empty...
As I'm writing this I'm realizing that I may have preformed a backup before doing a factory settings/data reset/wipe so would that be erased when I did the wipe/reset?
I know now that if coming from another version of CM9 their is no need to wipe the factory data/settings, instead just wipe the other two (forget what their called)
Should be in a folder called ClockworkMod
After updating nightlies
What should I expect to have to re install?
gapps?
dpi fix?
any launcher settings?
what typically breaks/resets and has to be re-configured?
DPI fix is all.
Any changes you make to your build.prop file will be erased on an update from one nightly to the next (or CM9 to another nightly). Anything else - apps, gapps, settings, etc), should not change.
Personally, I've become used to the 160DPI default, which works quite nicely on the latest nightly. Yes, there isn't as much screen space, but I don't mind. I don't have THAT many things I need on the screen at once - one widget, half a dozen or so app shortcuts, that's about it for my main home screen. So 160 works pretty well, especially for office docs and kindle reading.
160 v 120, what do they actually look like when compared? I know that running 160 has the portrait app grid view off kilter (landscape looks fine)
120 I find ends up with a row and at least one column off of the screen, so you can't use them. 160 doesn't have that issue unless you go portrait.
Hey, so yesterday I flashed AOKP on my Droid 4 (my first time flashing..)
I created a backup and everything. Well my phone dosent connect to data while on AOKP (bug?)
So when I to toggle the safe system it didnt work. So I decided to quick toggle and reboot my phone. It just keeps on giving me "droid" the eye then restarts. So I got it to reboot again back into recovery to restore the nandroid. But there was a MD5 mismatch.
Im at school so I dont access to anything. (I cant toggle back to safe system either now, it gives me a error while restoring /data.)
So what can I do?? -panic mode-
Luckily this site wasen't blocked..

I had a similar issue a couple of weeks ago and got an error when trying to restore my nandroid backup to my non-safe system. I went in to advance restore and restored the system, data, and cache separately and that worked for some reason when the regular restore did not.
If you can't get to safestrap menu the best you will be able todo is fastboot to .219 or .215.

I tried doing the advanced restore, but when I tried restore system (I havent tried the other two yet) it gives me a MD5 mismatch error. (tried before and after I posted this thread)
and I don't know how to fastboot...kinda what my phone to be fixed before I go home. My mom will kill me.
First of all, when you say toggling didn't work, what exactly do you mean (what error message did you get)
Second of all, do not quick toggle.
Third, what mode is the phone in now? Try toggling to Safe Mode and rebooting.
Also, what mode were you in when you made the backup? You cannot restore safe-mode backups to the non-safe partition and vice-versa.
Also, you can get AOKP to connect to data by cycling between GSM/CDMA. Yes it is bug.
I was in the Safe System and when I tried to toggle into the Non-safe system it gave me an error when it was trying to restore. I think it was the same "Error while restoring /data" as I got after but I can't be sure.
yeah I know..I just wanted to get back. But good to know Ill be able to conenct to data if I get back to it.
Im in the Non-Safe system right now but I can't toggle back due to the "Error while restoring /data" error.
I did the backup in the non-safe and tried restoring in the non-safe.
I really hope that quick toggle didnt mess me up completly.

You could try doing a factory reset of your non-safe system. Not sure if that would work or not but might be worth a shot. Your could also try booting into stock recovery and doing a factory reset. If you go that route and it works you will have to re-root your phone and you may lose some things.
Ok, so I didn't know there was a factory reset option on the safeboot..lol. I didn't select it but when I turned on my phone a black screen with white text popped up, so i shut it down and on again and it booted up to the set up process. Then a while after I tried toggling the safe system again but it gave me the error again. I also tried doing a nandroid but it gave me a error about the /systemrig?
Then I decided to just boot it up normally and it gave me the set up process again. :/

Glad to hear you at least have a working system again. When my safestrap pooped out on me I had to boot into stock, uninstall safestrap recovery, manually delete the safestrap folder on the sd card, then reinstall safestrap recovery. That finally fixed it for me. I have a suspicion it might have been a low amount of storage space that caused my initial problem with safestrap not wanting to toggle between safe and non-safe but I haven't confirmed that.

Yeah so am I.
Ok so from what I understand I should set up my phone again and unistall safestrap, go into the file manager, delete the safestrap folder and reinstall safestrap and I should be good to good to go with toggling and have it not boot up to set up everytime I turn it on? Then to get back to AOKP I just redo the data wiping and flashing. Sweet.
Yeah that might be it, I've been getting a "Low volume space on SD" error for a while. I didn't know what was causing it to be so full.
If your getting a low disk space message you might want to see if you can find some things to delete or move to an external sd card. I use DiskUsage. It gives you a nice graphical representation of what is eating up your space.

Ok I used it and got some stuff off. Seems like some of the biggest takers were some game data like Temple Run and Spirit HD. heh.
Anyways I did what you said about safestrap, after I finished restoring the rest of my apps..took forever. I reinstalled safestrap and booted into recovery. When I tried toggling it still gave me the "error while restoring /data". Then when I booted up normally I went back to the set up process. Why

That's odd. You deleted the safestrap folder in /sdcard right? Not /sd-ext? If you deleted that then there shouldn't be any data to restore. It should be like you are setting up your safe system for the first time. Assuming that you:
1. Opened the safestrap app and uninstalled recovery.
2. Used a file explorer to delete the safestrap folder in /sdcard.
3. Then opened the safestrap app and reinstalled recovery.
That is what I did and it worked for me. If that doesn't work then I am at a loss. Maybe someone with a little more knowledge of how safestrap works can chime in.
I think thats what I did wrong. I unistalled the Safestap app but not the recovery and didn't know there was a safestrap file in the internal storage.
Ok so far I think I got Stock and AOKP running along pretty nicely. Thanks for the help everyone!
Also, how would I go about updating to a new nightly or another ICS based ROM?
I hope Data connection (3g/4g and wifi) get fixed up. I also been noticing like plugged in a computer AOKP will charge slower than usual. But decharging and battery life seems alright.

Glad you got everything worked out! You should see a link to the nightly builds in the OP of the CM9 and AOKP dev threads. If you are flashing a nightly build of the same ROM you should be able to flash it in safestrap recovery over top over your old build. You should always wipe cache and dalvik cache when flashing a new build. If switching to a different ROM that you should wipe data/factory reset as well.
I doubt that the data connection issues are going to get worked out until we see ICS ROMs based on the ICS leaks. But to use those you will need to be on the ICS leak on stock. Personally I am waiting until the official ICS OTA comes out. Not willing to take the (small) chance of getting knocked off the official upgrade path. If the data issues have got you down I suggest trying out the Eclipse ROM. That's what I am running. Yes, it is "only" GB based, but it is very smooth and has no data issues.
I had the same issue
When mine kept resetting, I couldn't get it to even go to safestrap mode. I had it replaced because of endless searching let to nothing.

Probably not going to see a totally working ICS ROM based off the GB kernel. I don't think hashcode is really even working on them anymore. He's more focused on getting a ROM up and running based off the ICS kernel in the leaked updates. Once the ICS OTA drops we should see some really nice ICS ROMs I think. Or you can jump on the leaks. Personally, I'm riding it out on Eclipse until the official OTA drops. Too many hoops to jump through when messing with the leaks IMO.

Yes, Eclipse is GB with some elements changed or added to give it a more ICS look. Any app specifically made for ICS won't work but I can't really think of anything like that other than Chrome browser. Most apps are still made with GB in mind because that is what most android phones are still running. You can find the Eclipse ROM thread in the dev section.

Hi Guys,
Ok, I've got an HP Touchpad 16gig. I've installed: CM9 Kernal version 2.6.35-palm-tenderloin (9-20121125-Nightly), Android 4.0.4,
I used Acme Installer3, gapps-jb-20121011.
So far it looks great and the touchpad is a joy to use. I also installed gapps but this is where something is wrong, for the life of me I cannot get Google Play store to work. When I click on the Play Store icon or the 'SHOP' shopping bag icon the app starts to open then it just returns to the page I'm on.
I do have an old Google Play accout that I can still access and see the apps I downloaded last year when I had a Flytouch pad. I also have a current gmail account and Google+ account.
So far I have tried:
Updating apps and ROMs using goo.im
Uninstalling and re-installing the gapps folder using a couple of different versions
Clearing the cache and making backups before making any changes etc.
Now I am very new to this game although I'm computer savvy, if anyone can help me with getting Google Play Store to work then that'd be great but please be gentle with me as I am learning as I go....
Many thanks,
Mark

Hi guys, many thanks for all the suggestions,
I can enter recovery but then the pad just starts as normal.
I've re-flashed everything but it has just made the touchpad slower and does not respond to touches very well and seems out of calibration.
I still don't have Google Play/Store even though I used gapps 29/04.
Can I completely wipe all traces of Android from the touchpad back to webos (which still works fine) and then I'll pay someone to install Android on the touchpad. I fear if I carry on trying to get this working properly I'll either completely foobar the pad or I'll throw it against the wall.....
Many thanks,
Mark.

A massive thumbs up sstar for helping me out with my problems with googleapps/store etc. He explained a few things to try and now its all working
I also want to thank all the other members that contributed, I wasn't sure of how to do some of the things you suggested but I read and re-read what you all said and it finally sunk in...
I reflashed and installed cLockworkmod to delete all the Android guff and clear the cache etc, then I re-flashed using the latest CM9, ACMEInstaller 3, 6update and 29/04 gapps, it took two attempts but on the second attempt, success!!!
I now have a fully working Android pad with google store and I'm able to install all the apps I previously had on an older Android pad and a few new ones that look tasty and are essential for day to day usage and also give me better control over what I can actually do with the working device.
You guys have made my day.....:highfive:
Cheers, Mark.
Hi. I'm having a really big problem and a hard time trying to get my phone back to how it was. I was able to do a backup with CWM rom manager before i flashed to CM9. The reason why i want to go back to the ROM that came with my phone is because i'm not able to mount my SD card. I tried it in the recovery reboot menu. I mounted everything, then when it reboots, i go into settings and try to mount both the external SD and the internal SD card, The external one mounts, but i still can't see anything from it. And the internal never mounts.
So i did use the back up utility, and now when i go to restore, It says that the MD5 checksum aren't matching up or something. I'm also scared because it says that the battery is not charging. I've turned the phone off and am letting it charge now to see if it'll charge. But it was down to 11%, And i'm starting to get scared cause i might be without a phone. :crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:
How can i wipe CM9 and go back to the ROM that came with my samsung 4g exhibit II when i got it? this is what it was before;
exhibit ii 4g
sgh-t679
android 2.3.6
kernel 2.6.35.7-perf (I didn't upgrade this)
build #: gingerbread uvle1
P.S. After i rooted it and flashed it into the root_kit. I then flashed it into "cm-9-20121125-UNOFFICIAL-ancora_tmo". So this is the rom that's giving me the problem. I really hope someone understands what's going on and can help me. I just want to go back to how it was before. And 1 more thing. I can only browse the sd card through wondershare mobilego for android. All my files are still there, But i can't see them on the phone, Just through USB connection.
Thank you so much
:crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:

Oh wait, Something good happened. I read somewhere else that i might have to format the internal sd card. I just did that and now i'm able to see my external sd card. all my music and pics are here. Hmmm, weird... now i'm going to try and backup the texts and logs that i saved from mobilego. but i still might want to go back to the factory rom because the screen was bigger.
I just can't flash the gapps .zip file. It says that it can't open and then it just says (bad). So i can't connect my google account to my droid as it stands.
Download gapps again. And flash, Do not restore system apps, only do user apps

odouppi practical
I upgraded to CM10. Now the gps doesn't work. also the usb connection doesn't work so i can't load the cm9 i don't think. If i wipe the ROM, will that load it back to the factory one? or will it make my phone useless?
Update: Ok, I'm able to connect via wifi with Mobilego. Should i upload root-stock.zip and flash that so it can go back to gingerbread (or whatever the ROM is called that is the basic one that was on before i changed?)
Update 2: I'm just having a problem with GPS. in google maps (a program i do use a lot), Is not able to get my current location. I wonder if anyone else is having this problem from CM10

Root-stock.zip will not get you back to gingerbread. You should read the t679 XDA wiki. Five or six times even.
maybe i should try doing this when i'm sober...
Yeah that would help alot

I think i'm going to stick with this ROM. But the only problem is that the facebook app seems to be crashing. it doesn't even load up. and gps works in one app, but not in the google maps apps.
What do you mean Facebook is crashing, on occasion I get Facebook has stopped, but if you hit WAIT it loads just fine

No, It's working now. I had to uninstall it. Restart the phone, Then install it again.
The only thing that's not working is the gps on google maps.

Ok look, a general rule of thumb whenever you are installing a new rom, do a full Rom wipe = Factory Reset. Then flash your new rom. Then proceed to install the necessary Gapps. Then clear cache and dalvik cache. Then fix permissions. Then your set. The only time you can install a rom over another rom is if its an update, from the exact same rom and same os.
Soooo happy with CM10

I This I clear the cache, dalvik cache (and maybe even data). I wiped everything in that menu except ROM and system. It was my first time working with this. I did it in less then a week of lightly reading about it. I'll make sure to remember that man.
Thanks
:good:
P.S. I LOVE CM10. This ROM is just phenomenal. I couldn't believe my eyes when i went from Android 2.3.6 to Android 4.1.2. This site has helped me a lot. Please are very friendly and i appreciate that a lot.
Thanks once again, this site is very helpful.
