[HELP] E:can't mount /data (invalid argument) - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had installed the Miui v5 rom from a 2.3.6 gb base.
followed the instructions in the OP.
i installed the 3.11.22 version. it was good and perfect for a couple of days.
but then i don't know what got into it. it gave me hot reboots and right now i'm stuck at the loading launcher screen. whenever i boot that's what i get. for a few seconds it says loading launcher and then it reboots again.
this is an infinite loop.
i tried installing Slim rom and PA. but after i installed them, i still get the miui boot animation and then it stops right there not going further.
i tried flash stock rom. 2.3.6 going back. the flashing went well. but i don't get into the stock rom. phone bootloops. Although i did get an error after flashing. in the recovery it said: "E:can't mount /data (invalid argument)"
that's the error i got. i was able to get into download mode again. did the flashing process multiple times i got tired. trying different solutions.
I was able to flash cwm. and install MIUI again. this time i got thankfully i got past the boot animation of miui and now i'm back to square one. the same loading launcher screen added up with an imei error and an immediate reboot.
If anyone out there can help me or tell me what's really going on. i would very much appreciate it.
Thank you.

Flash dbdata.rfs as PDA in Odin to fix the "E:can't mount /data (invalid argument)" problem.

Try wipe data/ factory reset in CWM/ TWRP, I had similar problem, but after formatting data, data was mounted but not before.

i flashed dbdata.rfs too
but that error never seems to be fixed.
It shows up after i flash 2.3.6 through odin and the phone reboots to complete the setup.
The setup is interrupted by that error.
hence i can't complete the 2.3.6 setup.
I tried wiping data/ factory reset. through CWM as well as the phone's default recovery.

when downgrading from a Custom ROM to the Stock ROM , you need to use a PIT file, so follow this guide and flash the Gingerbread as guided or flash a rescue kit.
when you get errors and want help, its wiser to take a scree shot and attach with your post or at least write down all the details of that error as it appears on your screen.

i'll update the results.

xsenman,
i followed your guide thoroughly,
flashed the XJVU firmware 2.3.6, with the pit files.
all goes well and completes in Odin.
when the phone reboots to complete the setup.

First remove your Ext SD card and Sim Card and press power button for a min before proceeding to boot phone and check
I think you need to flash a few more times, but a lower version of ROM, following same process to downgrade to Froyo 2.2 JPU for Odin3
if it fails to boot, than its best to flash a CWM recovery to format your data back to rfs (fat32) as it may be in ext 4 format now. This can be done on froyo or Gingerbread ( look at guide for rooting on the same link given earlier)
Check this out! Links to useful Guides and " Banned " Documentaries

Remove ext SD...done
Remove sim...done..
flashed JPU from the link you gave. with the 512 pit file.
flashed pit first seperately. left the phone turned of for about a minute and then flashed jpu without re-partition.
right now i get a new error.
this is what i get:
i formatted internal sd card from 2.2 froyo's recovery. as well as data and caches.
should i try i from CWM?
as you mentioned earlier about data being in ext4. i flashed Slimkat. it asked for confirmation about data being formatted. can that be the problem?

yup, that would be the issue, as it means you have changed the data partition to ext 4, and stock ROM's won't be able to use it. here since you are on the froyo you can flash the speedmod kernel to get CWM and reformat the /data partition back to rfs format, after which you can flash the stock ROM again.
Hopefully you have taken a nandroid backup , if not you can make one before you reformat, such that you can salvage your data later or in CWM you can mount USB storage to copy the entire SD card to your PC first before you start formatting.

xsenman,
after flashing speedmod kernel. my phone stopped bootlooping. and went past setup. now i'm able to use stock rom 2.2. i'm surprised, that i didn't have to reformat.
Thanks very much, i owe you a beer bro. you helped me bring life back to my phone :good:
I would like to have your opinion about how i should proceed. installing the latest custom rom like slimkat. if that really did mess up my data what should i do?
i haven't formatted through cwm yet. should i format it still? as i'm able to boot and get in properly?
thanks so much again. in a way i'm glad i got this problem as much as i'm relieved that i could solve it. In the process i read a lot and gained knowledge.

well basically, the reason why I recommend speedmod (for format and SD card switch) is its capable of reading both rfs and ext 4 . so its working for you here without reformat.
My suggestion would be you remember to always remove any scripts, MOD's etc used for customizing before flashing any stock ROM on it, or stick to the customized ROM, here you are lucky in the sense that it is only data, if system was changed, it would be much more difficult.
Before you proceed further, take precautions like
1) Nandroid backup...that you can restore using current configuration ( froyo with speedmod)
2) efs backup
3) anything else that you need to safe to your PC
After that you can try slimkat, if that's your ultimate choice, without reformatting.

i formatted everything except /boot through speedmod kernel.
and then flash 2.3.6 the files which you gave me before.
and i experienced the same problem with the same errors.
i went back to 2.2 repeating the same steps to solve it temporarily.
Is there any explanation for it?
i'm confused .

you need to find out in what format your partitions are in
you can use terminal emulator and type "mount" to to see, in what format is your system, data etc are currently in or install this app from play store to get details of your mount points and its current format .
The problem could be due to speedmod was unable to format it due to corrupt partition or unknown partition. The issue here is Samsung Stock ROM's will only function when all partitions are in rfs format ( fat 32) . But speedmod kernel can function on both rfs and ext 4 formats.

OK try this, try to flash a Jelly Bean 4.3 or Kit Kat 4.4 on it, the partitions layout on this versions will be changed, so if you have corrupt partition, it may get overwritten or skipped. Hopefully

i think my internal storage is dying
my internal sd card gets detected at times in recovery..and other times it doesn't.
even to boot into recovery i need to try multiple times. to get in.
When i try to install any 4.3 or 4.4 rom i get an installation aborted error. there was nothing wrong with the package i downloaded too
In froyo,
my gallery shows images at times...and sometimes it doesn't. it gets fixed usually after only a reboot or so....
and i can't install apps too..
is there a way to fix this issue? should i try switching storage using your vold method?is it possible with my problem?

No Harm in trying anything and everything, its also possible the Internal SD card may not be be firmly in contact, ( basically its glued to the board) needs reheating the inand chip, look in [Tutorial][A.I.O Rescue & Recovery] My Secure Digital (SD card) Storage
and vold fstab can be edited or SD cards can be switched by a init-D script or even a kernel , look in [MOD][SD card switching] Vold.fstab files modified versions for Galaxy series (depends on ROM) as you can rely totally on External SD card and (remove Internal Sd card)

[Q] E:format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p2

Hello,
after update to stock I9000XXJVP from samfirmare with MD5 check (Odin 1.7, 3 files rom, pit 512, with Re-Partition, auto reboot and bootloader update) all was fine until I reboot the phone.
I got boot loops.
I again flash the phone with the same rom and same settings as above. After first reset I have:
Successfuly installed package.
Successfuly copied media files.
E:format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
Data wipe failed.
Successfuly applied multi-SCS.
Then I choose wipe data/factory reset from Android system recovery (3e) and got the same error:
E:format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
then I choose wipe cache partition and hit reboot system now.
And again boot loop...
Please help, I'm searching for sollution from two days.. I tried to flash others roms but with same result...
Try flashing back to froyo or even ezy base froyo (preffered), then flash ginger rom with bootloaders, flash speedmod kernel (latest) convert everything to ext4 and do a factory wipe in cwm recovery, then custom rom. Works for me everytime.
Goodluck

You can always reflash with .pit and repartition, to fix such partition issues.

I flashed with Odin with 512pit, re-parttion and bootloader update: 2.1 Eclair JM1, 2.2.1 Froyo JPU, 2.3.3 Ficeto_Deodexed_JVH_I9000_ODIN, and stock 2.3.4 JPU.. none of this work, every time boot-loop
I tried speedmod kernel and turn off all lagfix'es. Now all is in RFS.
Why I should convert everything back to ext4 ??
I think my problem is with internal SD-Card.. Flashing ROMs and KERNELs do not touch internal SD-Card.
From recovery I can't format internal SD-Card (memory):
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (No such file or directory)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount SDCARD
your storage not prepared yet. please use UI menu for format and reboot actions.
I have the same problem, Anyone can help?
I had this problem the first time I tried to install a new rom after rooting my phone. There's a thread somewhere with a solution (in the Dev section I think, if I remember rightly) which I followed and it worked a treat.
Just install firmware PDA-I900XXJP1 and pit file 512 with odin. Tick Re-partition. I'm not sure if any other stock firmware works but this is the one advised in the thread and it's the one I used, successfully.
This will get you back to an older version of stock Froyo. From there you can root again and flash an updated rom.
Sorry, it won't let me upload the files for some reason but they can easily be found in the stock rom thread.
Hope this helps.

I've flashed loads of roms with and without re-partitioning and it hasn't fixed this problem yet. I also tried to use 'parted' in an adb shell but it was also unable to fix, change or remove the partitions on the internal sdcard.
I think it must be a hardware-related problem.

Do you have specific stock rom used to fix the mmcblk02 problem of your gt-i9000? because mine I tried from 2.1 to 2.3.6 stock rom but still I can't used my gt-i9000 because of mmcblk02 error when flashing with pit 512 (re-partition tick) and 3 files.

For the "Format Failed /dev/block issue
I had the same issue, 4 issues in fact:
rfs format failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
rfs format failed on /dev/block/stl10
rfs format failed on /dev/block/stl11
Deleting meta data
Data Wipe Failed
I was giving up hope then
I tried this method:
I attempted to wipe all i could: dalvik, cache and data.
I flashed 'pit_512' on its own with repartition checked via Odin.
Back to download mode and flashed GB stock rom 2.3.6
Rooted, again via Odin
Then went into CWM recovery, went to 'mounts and storage' and formatted every option apart from the 'Format Boot' option. All formats successful which was different from before.
Formatting completely factory resets the phone so complete data loss!
Another flash with 2.3.6.GB stock together with the pit_512 repartition checked. (before reflash I did the 3 wipes again, Dalvik, cache, data)
After rom flashed I rooted then tried the formats individually again through CWM out of interest to see if I got those same 4 errors and BINGO!! all went without any problems!!! :good:
Might be worth a try??
:fingers-crossed:
Hope this helps.
format failed
When I use the reset to factory default from the menu I switch to the 3e reccovery and get the error: rfs format failed
But when I use the CWM Recovery and select wipe data/factory reset all format item are OK.
so, what's the difference between 3e and CWM factory reset?

[Q] I9000 Soft-bricked after Jellybean flash

Evening,
After trying nearyl everything I found online to get my phone back into a working state I finally gave up and decided to ask
you for help.
So, it all began with me trying to flash the Jelly Bean Port onto my SGS in the hope it would fix my constant crashes and other problems
I had after another flash.
I got it working at some point, but it did not react when I plugged it in the usb port as mass storage device or any other mode for that matter.
So I tried some other solutions.
A couple tries later i started getting the "cant mount /dbdata" error which i fixed with a solution from this forum using a dbata.tar as PDA, using the JW4 firmware.
However because I wanted the usb to work I tried again to get jelly bean to run, without success.
I'm no unable to boot the phone passed "Enter your password to decrypt storage" or in any other mode.
When flashing I keep getting "Failed to mount /data" which seems to disappear at times when the external sd is inserted.
My Computer regocnizes the Phone as two different drives, even when i remove the sd...
So yeah.
The moral of the story is: I cant get the phone to run on any mode except jellybean and there without usb connection, if i get passed the decrypt thing.
Currently all flashing leads me to the recovery screen saying:
"Can't mount /data " and "Cache wipe failed" after that it just bootloops.
So, can anyone help me out?
P.S. I can at all times enter recovery and download mode.
Hey
If u can enter download mode, why dont u flash 2.3.6??that should clean all your problems..
Plus if you upgrade to JB your external sd-card wont be mounted to ur system...(you cannot alter any data directly to your external sdcard...
There are 3 ways to solve your prob..
1.use CWM..
--goto mounts and storage, then hit external sdcard..
2.use your external memory card directly with ur system..that means without your phone
3.(long method)
Transfer ur data to internal sdcard then use a file manager and transfer to external memory card
Cheers
If I Helped, dont mind Hitting the Thanks button...

I tried this approach and flashed the JVU Version from samfirmware.
It leads to the following error:
Code:
Failed to mount /sdcard (file exists)
(...)
Format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
During the boot up, after the first flash.
Note: The external SD-Card was not in the phone, as well as the sim card.
After that it starts bootlooping.
If I insert the external SD-Card before the flashing process i only get:
Code:
Format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
And the Phone starts to bootloop again.
I've tried to google this and I get two reactions:
The internal SD is fried.
Format the internal SD using CWM.
I believe I did try the second approach, but i would greatly appreciate a short guide on how-to properly format my internal SD

I was under the impression they had fixed that bug in V6.
Anyway, it's not the real problem since I would rather get my phone to work again, before I go ahead and try out jelly bean again.

At this Point, I get the first error concering the formating, see above.
If I still continue and manage to get JB to work (I event tried the kernel cleaning script). I get locked out because of this "Enter password to
decrypt storage" Error. Which is known to be fixed by performing a factory reset, which I cant do, because of the first error.

try and enter any password five times until prompted that this will wipe the card, than you should be able to do so
So, today I decided to buy a new smartphone after one last try of getting my old one to work.
I used the default guide to flash JellyBean and now it works ...
I guess it was scared or something, I'll keep using it to check of fluently it works for now and bought and sd reader to solve the usb issue.
So this thread can be closed.
Thanks to all for their tips.

[Q] Restored to Factory with Odin; still won't boot

HI, all,
My phone was kind of unstable for a while, with lots of error messages saying "this app needs to close." Last night the battery died during the night, and when I replaced it with a charged battery and turned on the phone, it would only boot to the devil kernel screen, then it would stop. I spent hours reading on the Internet and in these forums, and it seemed my best bet was to restore to stock via instrux on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
That seemed to go well, but at the end the phone didn't reboot like it should have. I get to the At&T screen, then the phone shuts off. Not only that, I can't even get into recovery mode now. I don't know what to do now, and I honestly can't understand most of the lingo in the threads to know if there's already the instruction I need out there. I'm sorry to ask you all to repeat yourselves. I'm totally new to this. Please help.
The phone had been rooted and had devil kernel and CyanogenMod 10 (i think). It was running a version of jelly bean that was out on this site in August. That's all I know (ex-bf rooted it for me). Any advice is much appreciated!!!
Try 4-2ndtwin's one click Odin stock kk4 ROM. Maybe without bootloader version, assuming you haven't lost the GB bootloader.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18370912
You will need to get into download mode. There are stickies in this forum that tell you how to do that.
Designgears thread won't help you, I think. It's pre-gingerbread.
If you can get to KK4 ROM, then flash the Corn 7 kernel with Odin, then you will have CWM recovery and can flash the CM10.1.0 RC-2 ROM which will be better than what your bf had available in August.

Thanks for this advice. I flashed the Odin kk4 ROM, and now I get the GB bootloop. Might that mean that I need the bootloader after all?
EDIT: When booting, my phone was also flashing colorful, scrambled-cable-looking screens. I found another thread in the forums where someone had this issue, and the response to that person's query was that the person needed to flash the bootloader. So, I went back to the link you gave me and got the version with the bootloader. I flashed that, and now I still have a bootloop, but it loads a couple of more screens. The colorful screen is gone. Any suggestions now? In reading other threads, it seems like there are a few options. I'm not sure which to go with.
Not sure about flashing bootloader.
Flash kk4 again w/o bootloader.
Sometimes takes two flashes.

I tried again and it booted to recovery. There are some errors. It says it couldn't mount the SD card. I'm copying the errors below in red. My options in recovery are:
1. reboot system now
2. apply update from sdcard [NOTE: I don't think this will be possible b/c of the errors below.]
3. wipe data/factor reset
4. wipe cache partition
Should I try any of these?

I found a thread where someone had the same error message as me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2270364
And the advice for fixing is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1447303
It involves setting up an external SD card to act as an internal one by partitioning the card through CWM. I have no idea how to get into CWM. Maybe I'll still play around with it to see if I can salvage something, but I think I'm going to get another phone to use at this point.
Thanks for your help!

[Q] Bricked/bootloop/no -recovery/ odin cant read file error, HELP?

Hi,
Ive been trying to get this phone working for about 2 days straight now. Tried all kinds of flash methods and so on.
But as of now, im officially stuck, and i dont know what to do.
I have this SGS i9000 with almost certain a broken internal SD (not sure, this is what i have tried to fix by flashing different roms/bootloaders/pit files,U name it)
I'm now at a point that only download mode is available and when trying to acces any recovery (original or CWM) i get the nice brick screen(phone --- ! ---- pc picuture)
Any Help would be apreciated.
Sorry for my bad english, im from Holland.
I don't know the original firmware or anything, i got this phone with bootloop error from a friend.
Thank you for all your help...
[EDIT1]
I am able to enter the Original recovery now, but a lot of errors are on the screen:
Do note that, there is NO simcard and NO External SD-Card in the phone present!
The errors in normal recovery are:
- e:failed to mount /data (file exists)
- e:delete_data_files: cant mount /data your storage not prepared yet, please use UI menu for format and reboot actions

when you get this (phone --- ! ---- pc picuture), you need to re-flash the correct kernel or correct ROM as its stuck in incomplete flashing.
when you get this cant mount /data your storage not prepared yet you may have mp3/junk file stuck in data and causing the issue, so remove Ext SD card, remove sim card before flashing dbdata.rfs file from here
IF that did not resolve it , flash a rescue kit from above link used for unbricking. i9000
Important
make sure your unit is i9000 and not a variant of i9000
charge your phone fully before flashing

Thank you for your reply,
I checked via Imei number what type of i9000 it is and its a i9000.
The phone is without a sim and external sd card.
As of this point a flashed other stuff and i now get failed to mount sdcard (file exists)
copy dbdata media: cant mount sdcard
please use ui.. bla bla...
media files copy failed.
Apllying Multi CSC
Cant acces system csc/kor/system.
Succesfully applied multi csc.
Is there a way to figure out what the correct rom should be? or is there like any 'universal' rom that would work on all i9000 phones?
I read your rescue page, and tried the one click jar file inside your resque kit and also via Odin but still i keep getting errors.
The original problem (when i first got the phone) is a couple of bootloops and eventually it would boot into android.
Whipe of data and cache would solve the problem but it got worse and eventually it resulted into a bootloop from which he booted into android after about an hour or so...
I though i had the right kernel/rom.. and so on...
I did flash a speedymod kernel which booted right into android and with sdcard function.
But it would give errors and bootloop and crash diverse apps (system apps)
I have rooted diverse types of phones before so i am not a complete noob in this area...
Any help on how to continue?
Thnx
[EDIT1]
After flashing dbdata i still keep the same error.
The rescue kit from ebase the download link of the pdf isn''t working.
Any help on that?
I will try all rescue kits available...
and let u know what it does(little hope but)
[EDIT2]
EZBase rescue kit gave me the following errors:
failed to mount sdcard (file exists)
copy dbdatamedia cant mount sdcard
please us ui bla bla bla
format volume rfs format failed on dev block mmcblk0p2
data whipe failed
Multi CSC
Cant acces /system csc kor system
Trying the other EZBASE reqovery now (CF-root and Semphore)
[EDIT3]
Same as in edit 2
[EDIT4]
Gbflashkit gives the following result,
media files copy failed (unable to read above that because normal recovery menu is displayed on top of it)
failed to mount data (file exists)
delete data files cant mount data
please use UI bla bla bla
Updating file system goes correct
wiping cache
formatting cache
cache wipe failed
applying multi csc goes correct!
I already tried de SGS resque kit but it also failed...
Any help ?
[EDIT5]
Did a whipe cache partiton and data/fact reset...
Now when booting into normal rescue i get this:
Copy media files
failed to mount /sdcard (file existst)
copy dbdata media cant mount sdcard
please use UI bla bla
CSC installation goes succesfully
After flasing dbdata again the error stays the same

this would be the clue as to one of the problem you may be having, basically at some point the phone must have been formatted to ext 4, as such samsung Stock rom will not be able to use it .
The solution here would be to flash a speedmod kernel for 19000 ( look in My Android collections ( link below) under kernels and flash that to get CWM, untick Auto reboot in Odin before flashing after that get into CWM recovery and format system & Data or everything back to RFS using CWM universal lag fix menu.
you can also look at My android solutions (link below) for solving mmcblk0p2 problems

Reboot into cwm recovery
go to advanced speedmod menu
do convert filesystems to RFS
cant mount dev block mmcblk0p1 or mmcblk0
no such file or directory
cant mount mnt sdcard
backup failed.
you may need more free space on int sd
aborting
In win7 in the disk module i can see a e and g drive but it says no media .. so im unable to do anything about it.
also on CMW recovery i can get into the mount USB storage menu, but the pc won''t show anything except the e and g drive with no media...

Basically this means your Internal SD card is corrupt , you can try ADB whilst in Recovery to see if you can pull anything from your internal SD card. Look in MY Directory (link Below) about ADB, if you are not familiar about ADB
or you can push a custom ROM into it to flash with CWM
The other option to get phone booting would be to use a two primary partitioned External SD card to act as the Internal SD card.

Ive tried a lot of stuff but adb won't recognise my phone...
I don't get an android device listed in my hardware devices list... only under usb devices it will say a composite usb device...
Even tried a other pc (which is fresh) but no luck either.. when i put my own phone on the same usb cable it recongises it straight away.
So no probs with usb cable/pc.
Any help? external SD-card option, not an option in this case...
Any other thoughts?
thnx for all the help!

Your SDK manager must have installed sources for your Android version to be able to run ADB and recognize the phone. Did you do it?

cm11m2 sdcard mount problem

Hi guys, i haven't seen mention of similar problem anywhere on forums so got to ask you.
After updating from cm10.2 to cm11 monthly2 on i9000, there is no sdcard or internal memory mount in /storage/ or /mnt/. /storage/sdcard0 and sdcard1 are both empty. I can however mount internal memor in CWM recovery and see all the files there.
I will be extremely grateful if anybody can help me. Thanks.

after flashing cm11m2 I booted without full wipe and had a bootloop, then i rebooted and made wipe/factory reset and cache wipe, then reflashed cm11m2 again.
//EDITED:
The problem is very weird. Internal memory started to work properly but external sd card has to be removed during the boot. CWM is also unable to mount external sd while mounting internal memory works fine.

strange issue, so go here and flash a CM11 Nightly to see if it solves it, if not, you may have to revert back to gingerbread and than climb up the ladder to Kit Kat again

Hey I have the same problem! I cant open my internal sdcard, so I cant open camera ( Please mount your sdcard). In settings I dont see sdcard at all and when i try to mount i got "Your sdcard is unmounted". In recovery mode I see my sdcard0 with all files, so i dont understand what is going on...
I have installed TWR,
wipe cache, data and Dalvik
flash cm11 and gapps
reboot
Have i missed something?
I read something about wipe sdcard before flashing cm11, but how it can be possible if I have cm11.zip there?
anyone?
