I'm coming from a Verizon Galaxy Nexus. I was going to wait for the Nexus 5--but everything points to it not being available on Verizon. So...
I enjoy ROM hackery and all that. I don't like the idea of safe strapping specifically because I have to lose available data space. Not even that, but I've heard safestrapping in general is tricky. My brother used to have a Bionic. He safestrapped--he said it was awful the hoops and hurdles he had to get through to use a custom ROM. Luckily, I plan on using the Stock software while using Xposed Framework to be able to customize the things I need. I plan on rooting.
However, I'm going to miss some stuff. To my knowledge, you can't have custom kernels on safestrapped devices (feel free to correct me). I like that since the GNexus had custom kernels and tweaks out the wazzoo, I was able to change the gamma values for the screen to make it look even nicer. I like the GNexus screen. However, I went to the Verizon store today and played around with the MotoX--I enjoy the screen, I love the feel of the phone, it looks great--super fast also. I don't know what to do. I'm looking for some opinions, even if they are biased. Maybe that's what I need.
So.... what do?

If you get the Dev edition you can unlock the boot loader and flash when things become available. If you get the vzw version there is a chance you'll get it before the ota and you can root. If its updated, root isn't available.

But the dev edition is crazy expensive.
kernels are for the most part a no go, on that note once safestrap gets better it is quite easy to use and looks like there will be decent development soon. it wont be anything like the nexus line but even stock with xposed framework mods you can totally customize an already great phone !

Will we ever be able to adjust kernel parameters though? Maybe? If I got a dev edition would kernels be plausible?
you can play with the kernel play with speeds and change governor and shceduler probly more im not sure. anything is plausable on a developer edition as long as someone develops for it.

But what about the non-dev version? Would we be able to change kernel stuff too? I can't afford the Dev edition unfortunately.
Here my experience.
I came from an sgs3, before that I had the sgs2, HTC vivid and infuse... With each one I was a flashaholic, I enjoyed tweaking with the phones, rooting, flashing custom roms, building my own... Both stock based and cm.
I was a little concerned about the locked bl on the moto x. But, I quickly came to realize that this phone was damn near perfect right out of the box, basically what I have tried to achieve on all my other devices, yet failing to do so. Yes, there are a few things I miss, but it pales in comparison to having a phone that I trust to "just simply work" but it doesn't "just simply work" it "fu**ing works brilliantly"
I can now say that I do not miss flashing Roms and kernels, I don't miss backing up and restoring data through nandroids every other day, I don't miss soft bricks and bootloops, I don't miss flashing cm/aosp and breaking functionality... Simply put, i don't miss feeling like I need to consistently flash to have an enjoyable experience. I have found a new enjoyment... Having a phone that is innovative, reliably and comfortable, that works as intended... The battery life is amazing, I don't think I could live without active notifications now and always listening and the accuracy of voice recognition makes hands free use actually enjoyable and practical, every other past phone just made hands free a headache and stress inducing.

Sry the first part of that statement was about the consumer edition lol. You can change some stuff with the kernel but I usually don't mess with that to much. The phone is smooth as hell and just needs minor visual tweeks IMO.

That's what I've heard. It sounds incredible. The only thing I'm going to need to change is the Quick Settings. I also really need quick replies from the SMS app--I don't think there is anyway to get those. :|
I was in the same situation and I decided to switch to AT&T for the moto x. If the Nexus 5 is sweet i can just sell the moto x and buy it off contract...

yes in safestrap..hashcode has kexec tools built in. but the kernel will have to have kexec patches to boot with Safestrap. i know Hashcode is planning on working on that for the consumer version

yeah if you are trying to effectively sell your upgrade, its almost always best to get an apple product.
i mean if you got a gold one right now who knows you could probably do pretty well.

The thing is, I didn't want to spend $200 or whatever the 5s costs. I wanted to spend $100 on Amazon for the upgrade to the Moto X. However, if I paid $20 more, I could get a G2.

valid point.
but i think you'll get more for a iphone.
and i think the market for itis bigger . i mean if the G2 costs $80 less, but someone pays you $100 more for the iphone.. i tend to like doign the iphone route, just because theres so many "THE HOTTEST ANDROID" phone that they drop in price fast. with the iphone if you are slow to sell it, you arent gonna immediately lose value.
if you can upgrade using verizonwireless.com you acn do the VERIZON30 code on say the note 3 and get 30% off. dont know if that works on iphone. and then sell the note 3 possibly is another idea.

So I unlocked my RW moto x and tried flashing a custom rom and surprise surprise there isn't a rom that supports RW yet.
So I was wondering if it would be possible to make a sort of 'patch' for other roms in general that installs the apks need to run a phone on RW. I took a look at a stock RW rooted rom and tried to install a few apks myself, the main RW app installed but wouldn't activate the phone since everything else was missing.
I know there isn't going to be too much of a demand for this since there aren't that many RW users and unlocked ones at that, but it would be very helpful for the few of us there are.

Have you tried xposed and gravity box? You can get most customization options of custom ROMs....and keep the moto x features that you lose with aosp custom ROMs.

Yep yep, I know about xposed modules but from what I've seen of xposed modules they aren't as fast and seamless as a well polished rom like Cyanogenmod or Paranoid android. I also haven't seen all the features I want from a custom rom in xposed modules such as a the cm theme chooser.
Thanks for the suggestion though

You may find the custom aosp ROMs have some glitches for the x tho...... And again, you lose all the unique moto x features. All of them.
That's why there are very few roms for the x. It's not really a flashers phone.... that's for sure. And most seem to prefer stock. Usually with gravity box.
Not to mention the downgrade issues.
As much as I love the moto x... all of the above are why my wife has it now and I moved to the n5. I think the x is the better overall phone, but missed the busy development that comes with a nexus.
The X was so perfect, it bored me. Lol

I'm with you on that, I've been considering switching to the nexus 5 for a while now. the moto x has alot of good stuff but there are a few alternatives to active notifications (and for me personally I don't use active notifications that much anymore since I have a pebble), I rarely use touchless control because in my opinion it is still awkward to just start talking to your phone in public, moto assist can be replaced with anything that schedules when your phone should be silent on vibrate or normal, and besides that the only thing I would miss is the two twist camera launch function.
I mean it seems like it would be harder to do but if someone could modify the stock rom with features of other roms that would be great too. In fact that would be the perfect rom, but I don't see that happening.
Okay guys, I have to ask. I have read numerous posts about Lollipop, including several reviews on several devices. I even tried a custom ROM on my tablet that is Lollipop based. I have to say it, I don't see what all of the fuss is about. I promptly returned to my Kit-Kat based ROM on my tablet, and I have yet to see any pressing reason to upgrade (I use the term loosely) my Moto G 2014 to Lollipop. In fact most of what I have read from those who have has been negative. Okay so there is ART, but I have been running that since I got my phone and on my tablet for 7 months without issues. And from everything I have read, customization is going to be much more difficult with Lollipop.
So tell me, am I just missing something really revolutionary or what?? Is there some dramatic increase in performance or memory efficiency? Or is it simply a matter of just wanting the latest OS. I am truly befuddled by all of the hoopla.
I await enlightenment.
+1
but... but material... and ART...
j/k, honestly I'm waiting to try it mostly because of the lockscreen notifications and the status bar changing colors (lol)
and honestly in the Moto G WhatsApp group I noticed that mostly indians are super hyped for Lollipop, for some weird reason

:good: I hear ya! Exactly my point. So I will stay on Kit-Kat and avoid Lollipop. I am hoping somebody will develop a nice Kit-Kat based custom ROM and/or kernel that will allow overclocking. I'm not an Android developer so I am not able to do so. But I am really quite happy with things as they are so I won't lose any sleep over it.
Thanks for your feedback.
I have to admit I was pretty excited for Lollipop but with some of the developments over the past few days such as the, IMO, inferior lockscreen (having to swipe to input the pattern/PIN) it's put a slight dampener on it, I'm still going to upgrade but I'm not going to rush first day it comes out.
And just found out they have removed the Normal, Vibrate and Silent toggles when you long press the power button, that's annoying!
Yup as you guys said, we Indians sure are excited. I'm just speaking for myself here, and not generalizing, but I do love the new design of Lollipop. IMO, KitKat had a very boring, flat design, which I always used to cover it up with some CM Themes with my old mobile. Whereas the new design gives a breath of fresh air to the OS, which I think Android greatly needed.
As for ART, what you feel or see is mainly just placebo on kitkat. In a sense I really don't think it makes much difference with 4.4.
Disclaimer: I maybe wrong here. Just quoting my experience.
So in short the OS is new, the design is beautiful and a complete overhaul, some new awesome features that weren't available on stock before, and other minor tid-bits are basically the reason why we, a bunch of android nerds (i'm saying this in a positive way) are excited when a new OS gets released.

The Moto G 2014 has no custom ROMs out for it yet. We were stuck with the boring, rooted stock. We couldn't use a theme to make it look something like Lollipop. Instead, we used GravityBox.
Customs ROMs give much more than GravityBox since GravityBox cannot fulfill most of the things we all like about customs ROMs. Lollipop fixed a good amount of the small problems we had with stock 4.4.4; along with a new design and fluent animations. So we all hopped on the Lollipop train because there were no custom ROMs.
Now, had there been PA available for the Moto G 2014, I would have waited until there was a Lollipop version of PA.
well said!! We lack development and thus lollipop will give us a refreshed look...
I dont know, why do we still lack the much needed developments
However, on a bright note. take a look at the moto x 2014 dev section.
Much barer and scarce then here. lol
So Im not much disappointed xD
I'm most interested in projct volta. Read a test these days about lollipop on nexus 5, they increased screen on time about nearly 30 %. Not bad in my opinion...

I agree that custom ROM development is totally lacking with this phone. But I disagree that Lollipop fills any void. As far as Lollipop fixing any problems , I guess that is based on one's own experience and I have not had any problems at all with 4.4.4. That is my whole point, Lollipop does not bring enough of ANYTING to inspire me to upgrade. I don't find 4.4.4 boring at all, I don't have any "problems" running it or using any of the apps I need, and it is very fast and responsive for me.
All of that said I do realize that we all use our phones in different ways that may make Lollipop appealing to many. It just isn't all that for me. Hopefully some motivated developers will come up with some decent custom ROM's for Kit-Kat. But until that happens I am sticking with the stock version I am currently running.
I've got Lollipop on my Moto G and I'm not particularly impressed.
-Unlocking takes longer.
-Pandora lockscreen controls are gone.
-Lockscreen notifications are not what I hoped for. If I get one text it will show some information about the texts. If I get 3 texts it just says I got 3 texts. So I have to unlock the phone anyways, and that takes longer.
-App-specific notification settings don't seem to work. I keep getting daily Subway Surfer notifications even though I turned them off.
-I DO like how the lockscreen camera controls are implemented.
Overall lollipop is meh for me. I guess some Android fanbois are like some Apple fanbois. They can't wait for the next thing that Google/Apple gives them, no matter what it is.

Okay, this I didn't read in any of the reviews.
-So only pandora lockscreen controls are gone or even play music?
-Hmm, and so we can't even expand those notifications? Maybe there's a setting for it? I don't know lol
-Well I'm sure this bug will get solved....hopefully
Anything else you didn't like?

I agree with some of your points here, but to be honest for me it isn't lollipop that is lacking it is the Moto g, deep in my heart i love this device (mainly because of the battery life) but i don't think i can bare the 1 Gb of memory anymore and lack of development, i think the Nexus 5 got way more improvements and that's where all the excitement is coming from. The Nexus 5 was plagued with bad battery life and sub-par camera, audio latency was still bad (well this was a whole Android thing), etc and lollipop solved that. I think most of the excitement you are hearing is people with Nexus 4s and 5s, also a lot of new api's for developers. Yes there are things Google was retarded on removing, i'm hoping they listen to the community and add them back in 5.0.1. Oh and for what it is worth, for me certain apps on my Moto G would stutter like going into menus etc, like Tinder for instance on lollipop the stuttering is completely gone also i have more free ram and i think the battery life improved a little bit more.
[edit] Okay i take back what i said, i just headed over to the Nexus 5 forum and a lot of negative reviews too. I don't know, i don't really have no complaints of it on the G just wish i had more memory, but i knew what i was getting myself into.

The memory issue is a big one for many folks, but I haven't seen any problems (so far) in the six weeks I've had my phone. I don't foresee it becoming a problem since the way I use doesn't tax the memory limits. The most demanding app I use is Hay Day, and it runs quite well. It does crash on occasion but it also crashes on my wife's Galaxy S-4, her TF-700 tablet and my TF-300T tablet as well, so that's an app issue not a device limitation. And I am extremely pleased with the phone performance. It is much improved over my previous phone.
But I can see how the memory would make a difference for many people. And if Lollipop helps then that is a good thing. However, it seems that we are giving up a lot to gain a little.
I was happy with JB & still like it. KK is a little better & I enjoy running it. However I don't care much for L. I tried hard to like it. It has a few features I liked but over all I didn't care for it. I think it is ugly for one & the bugs in 5.0 was driving me crazy.
I went back to KK for now.
I only hope that Lollipop helps bring some development to this phone, because it is really lacking and that is starting to make me want to sell it.

I understand your frustration with the lack of development. Overall I am happy with my phone on stock Kit-Kat with it unlocked and rooted. I am able to remove some of the bloat which helps a lot. But it would be nice to see a custom ROM that allows overclocking and tweaking of the system to improve stability.
As it stands, I will stay with Kit-Kat and not upgrade to Lollipop. I have read way too many complaints about it, and as I said earlier, when I tried it on my tablet I was not at all impressed.
Also what are your thoughts on this?

I will stick to 4.4.4 simply because of my favorite module "amplify" saves so many resources from google. I've used aosp 5.0 and it uses so much more resources. Even with mini or micro gapps.

can you explain this more? I enabled amplify once and had nothing but problems.
I use MightyText, which keeps data active and wakes the phone regularly to upload/download/send new messages. I figure Amplify would interfere with MightyText
The developer has not mentioned a port to ART / Lollipop. So for those running Kitkat, may want to consider moving forward.
You can try an custom ROM, that have some of xposed features. I'm using simpleAOPSP and in linking. But the wifi bug remains and its really boring.

He sure has, as a matter of fact. I believe there's even mention of it in the Xposed framework thread OP. Do some searching. You will find what the dev has said about Xposed & Lollipop.
I've enjoyed the migration to lollipop. I do greatly miss slimkats features (always used slim instead of xposed), but that Dev team is full of wizards who will get SlimLP stable soon enough. I don't mind stock LP though either. I don't suffer from the memory leak that many others seem to have.
I moved forward to lollipop and I like it and am not going to move backwards. However, if I had to do it over again knowing the bugs I have now with lollipop I would have stayed with 4.4 for a bit longer. There are a tone of modules I'm missing, but like I said not going backwards now. I actually really like the way the new app switcher works even thorough a lot of people complain about it, except it still lags once in a while when I click on it. I wish i could dedicate resources to a couple things on m phone to keep them always super snappy. The home screen, app switcher, and hangouts would be great. I used to be able to do this with a module.
Nope, Lollipop is NOT worth losing Xposed at all. Both my Moto X and N5 are sticking to KitKat and Xposed. I have a Lollipop ROM on my N5 and I really don't see what all the fuss is about. KitKat is much better.

KK is better as far as functionality goes... Especially with something like slimkat to completely customize it, but lollipop is sexier imo

Lollipop feels like an OEM skin to me, like TouchWiz. Google seems like they are going for more mainstream appeal with Lollipop, and the road they are taking with it just isn't my cup of tea. I almost vomited when I saw all the pink in the Messenger app. I prefer the more subdued look that KitKat has. In fact, I prefer everything about KitKat.

I can understand it's like an OEM... But NOT touchwiz... There is absolutely no lag, the settings menu (granted it's ugly white) is organized nicely like aosp, no OEM bloat, etc. I do like the look of 4.4 better though. 5.0 does have it's perks as well. I like the status bar, but wish you could customize the quick settings arrangement (KK couldn't either without a custom ROM or xposed), I like the messenger, especially after the update, I love the material design of the apps, flappy droid obviously is a win, etc... I just hope an update drops to somewhat fix the battery a little bit. I miss my 4h SOT and u like others suggest, I'm not going to disable everything that makes my device a smartphone lol
Long time Android user here. I'm debating on whether or not I'd like to pull the trigger and root/flash a custom ROM to my brand new Nexus 6 (seriously, still has that new-phone smell). My girlfriend and I both got these beauties the same day and love them to pieces.
However...
Coming from a rooted/customized S3 and M7 I'm already missing the customization features that rooting devices allowed. Although I wouldn't have any issues doing so, I'm a bit concerned with potential bugs that could occur while using custom ROMs.
For instance, when I bought my M7, before I rooted it, the call quality was phenomenal. Then after rooting/flashing a custom OS, the quality seemed to drop substantially. No matter which ROM/kernel sets I used, there were always data and/or performance issues including, but not limited to, Pandora app skipping even when data (LTE) was at max reception.
I'm not asking which custom ROM is better as that would be a "to each their own" situation. I've, personally, been a fan of Liquid Smooth and ran it as a daily driver for my S3 (and ViperOne for my M7), but from what I've seen in the development pages there are quite a few ROMs I'd like to try out.
I wanted to see what people who've already rooted and flashed custom ROMs thought of their Nexus 6 post-awesomizing. Did the call quality change? Other than listed ROM bugs, were there any frequent issues that continued through various ROMs and kernel combinations?
Thanks, in advance, to anyone and everyone who replies!
Cheers,
Blue

The problem with HTC and Samsung devices, is that they are not truly open source. For a "dev" to get an AOSP ROM built for those devices can be quite an ordeal and can require many hacks to be made and many bugs will be found trying to get the AOSP source code to fit that device... The Nexus does not have this problem as AOSP is designed for it. Even a monkey could compile a bug free AOSP rom for the nexus, so don't worry about that sort of thing.

That's quite a relief to read. So there hasn't been any known issues with the call quality suffering? That is my biggest concern as with my HTC (post root/flash) the call quality was horrendous! It sounded like the person on the other line was constantly mumbling. The quality on the Nexus 6, as of now, is so crisp and clear it sounds as if they're sitting right next to me.
I'll definitely be looking forward to trying out the various ROMs available.

Yep, with a nexus those sort of issues should be a thing of the past. HTC are particularly bad as on teh M7, they themselves couldn't even get GPE to run properly (Speaker quality took a tumble).
Also, you may not know but Xposed framework just came out with an Alpha. In a short while, it wil get more stable and modules will get updated for Lollipop, meaning you will probably be able to add much of that customisation without changing from the stock rom.

I've heard of the manufacturer UI's getting in the way of performance with devices. I'm glad I went with the pure Google goodness this time! I'll keep an eye on Xposed, but I think you've helped my decision in rooting today.
Now to impatiently wait for work to be over and rush home to my laptop!

Good luck.
It is also my personal recommendation that you don't use a toolkit and you use fastboot natively..

It's Nexus man The best dev support is available for Nexus devices All ROMs has bugs and you'll have to bear with it. But the ROMs for Nexus devices meet stable version sooner than others. Taking Parandroid Android as an example. Visit their website and you'll be able to find that the main team focus on the Nexus line and they've legacy team to support other devices. I was also an user of S3 (Exynos variant) and PA used to be a great custom ROM for me

Yes I suppose a caveat to what I have already said, there will still be bugs on roms due to devs making customisations and you will see their bugs potentially. When I say bug free, I'm just talking about a clean AOSP rom affecting the fundamentals of the device.

Yeah. The awesome dev support is the only thing which made me to ditch Note 4 And I'm evidencing that custom ROMs has less Major bugs than stock ROM LOL :silly:

I'm currently running Euphoria OS on my N6. It is based on CM12, and offers a lot of customization options without actually having to enable root. I've been running it for almost a month now, and I have yet to feel a need to go into Developer Options and flip the switch for root access.
From a call quality standpoint, we are all running the same radio versions, so it will come down to your area. I work in an area where T-Mobile is spotty (my building specifically, LTE is stupid fast outside of it) and so I'm eagerly awaiting the update which adds WiFi Calling to AOSP. As it stands now, my phone does activate HD Voice and show an indicator icon in the dialer when I'm on with another T-Mobile user.
Maybe I can use this to convince my girlfriend to let me root hers, as well. She's never had an unlocked device before and she's very cautious about it, but I'm sure I could convince her.
Thanks again, all!
Quick question, does any one have a good recommendation on a guide to root my n6 I don't want to use a tool kit because I'm hearing its better to do root through fastboot if that's correct. I've been rooting phone for some time now but I've only dealt with fastboot once before with an HTC device. All my other devices where s2 to s5. And I usually used chainfires tool kits. So could someone please set me in right direction as far as guides go? Thanks

If you already have TWRP installed, just flash SuperSU. It used to require an insecure boot image due to Lollipop's security features removing root on each boot, but now the new SuperSU injects root each time.

Its pretty simple.
Use fastboot to unlock bootloader (wipes device]
use fastboot to flash TWRP recovery
Put SuperSU zip on sdcard and flash that via TWRP recovery.
There are guides in general. The main thing is understanding using fastboot. I have a thread on that.
Go to general > all in one thread > question 28
Thank you for quick response guys? Rooting today can't take it anymore.

Well xposed is Alpha - not ready for public consumption.
Also, xposed module features are never as good as ones compiled directly into the ROMs. They're just not as efficient. Xposed doesn't replace the need for custom ROMs.

Well, Xposed is working flawlessly on nexus 5 and 6 without causing any issue That's why suggested Yeah, that doesn't replace the need of custom ROM but that actually add more feature of user's choice
