With the AT&T and retail(tmobile) versions of 4.4 you can roll back to the OTA updated version of 4.2.2 by downloading the full image and then flashing with rsdlite.
I am not sure if Motorola changed/updated anything anything further with the 4.4 Sprint image.
This is a link to the file you would use with Sprint:

Verizon Moto X 4.4 return to 4.2.2

I was under the impression that once I accepted the KitKat update, I would no longer be able to return to 4.2.2 and root/all that.
Is this true? Can I still use RSDLite to go back?
I was wondering the same thing on the AT&T variant

You can downgrade to 4.2.2 using RSDlite after the 4.4 upgrade. I have the VZW version, not the AT&T version, but I assume it's the same.

As of now you can use RSD Lite to go back to 4.2.2. In fact if you want root in 4.4 you need to go back to 4.2.2 to start the process.

If your boot loader is unlocked just flash the recovery in fastboot and after doing that it will ask you if you want root, just hit yes and bam you got custom recovery plus root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2534850

Flashed 4.4 TMobile over Rogers 4.2.2 xt1058...

Update: The ATT 4.4 firmware seems to have worked. Everything seems to function just as it should. Will someone release the rogers ota 4.4 update that I can flash in the future? If that's the case would I follow normal flashing behavior to return to my proper firmware?
shartwell said:
The first problem I had was that this 4.4 image had some bugs(Tmobile here: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0). The home button didn't bring me to the homescreen, the push notification area didnt work(clicking the little profile thing for wifi bluetooth etc,) and some other minor bugs.
What did I do? I tried flashing a backup of my clean 4.2.2 -- Doesn't work. Tried flashing another 4.4(dhacker i believe,) boot loop.
I'm tryign to use rsdlite to restore stock 4.2.2 image and worked through soem areas(editing the xml,) but now I get "failed to hab check for tz:0x4e" Google searches didn't return any relevant solutions for my situation.
I had got the OTA update to 4.4 while running TWRP and forgot(and was unable) to revert to stock recovery to accept the OTA update. This is how it all started. Does anyone have a solution to this error code? I just can't seem to find one(it fails during motoboot.img btw).
Ps: I heard it could be my BL being upgraded to 4.4, which peope claim can be downgraded, but I've yet to see how.

The only 4.2.2 sbf firmware file that will flash correctly is the post camera sbf firmware, so make sure you are using the correct firmware, have you attempted to reflash the T-Mobile sbf firmware again? Sounds like a full wipe was not done after you flashed the T-Mobile firmware.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have to love you guys here at XDA
I've managed to get the ATT firmware to work perfectly. Will the 4.4 firmware be added to sbf in a little while(seems the ota is slow. I randomly got it.) for me to reflash like I did ATT?

You can flash the rogers 4.4.2 sbf firmware when its available, the only thing, which needs to be confirmed is you may not be able to downgrade. Do not flash the other 4.4.2 firmware other than rogers just to be safe , people are flashing crap and messing with modems, panicking that their data is screwed and flashing back and bam dead phone. The resurrection thread works for some but not for everyone. Wish people would flash kangakat, eclipse, cm11 or gummy rom , its safer and you have stock based ROMs with all motos goodies and custom

Where can I find installation for CM(my favorite mod) for my device? I haven't seemed to find any. Might be that none has been developed.
Otherwise can you suggest another similar mod that would work for my device.
My data seems to be non-functional for ATT firmware, which is fine for the moment, I'll leave everything as is(unless I install a mod) and flash the 4.4.2 rogers when it becomes avaliable(Do you think it would be within the next couple of days since the OTA is out?)
Ps: The other option I have is downgrading to 4.2.2 than using the OTA update(which is what I should have done in the first place...I forgot how to flash stock recovery for OTA,) but it seems the bootloader has now been upgraded. I don't suppose there is a way around that to restore 4.2.2 stock?

Makes sense. Figured that was it. How can I get a custom recovery onto my phone, though, as it's unrooted on 4.4(which I've heard has no current root.)
Thank you for all the help, hope I can get cm working soon and forget about OTA in the future.

Will the 4.4.2 bootloader work with the stock 4.4 recovery?

I think the answer is no, but I wanted to confirm that.

Interesting, thanks!
It looks like the stock recovery in 4.4.2 is identical to the one in 4.4. I flashed the stock recovery img from the 4.4 SBF that I got directly from Motorola. I wrote down the version number showing when I booted into stock recovery. Then I installed the 4.4.2 OTA update, rebooted the phone and went back into stock recovery and the version number was the same as it was when I was on 4.4.

I'm trying to figure out how one actually flashes the stock recovery so that I can complete the update to 4.4.2. You're saying just extract the img from the official firmware zip and then flash it over in 'download' mode or something, right?
ED: Figured it out but thanks anyway!

im not sure what u are trying to do are you trying to update to 4.4.2
if so find the SBF package and install it with RSD Lite
or find the OTA .zip and install it via stock recovery and it will update.

[Q] Go from 4.2.2 to 4.4.2 Unlocked, rooted, twrp

I have new Verizon Moto X Dev Edition. Messed up. Thought it was already on 4.4.2. Not, it's on 4.2.2. Unlocked bootloader and installed twrp and rooted. Wanting to update it to 4.4.2. Thinking from reading that I need to get back to stock recovery for OTA update if that is possible over wifi since phone is not activated yet. Can't find 4.2.2 stock recovery and not sure if that is what I need to do anyway. Is that what I need to do and/or is there a better way? Thanks

Well I too have a Dev Edition but is SIM-Unlocked so it isn't Verizon.
If all you want to do is update, you could install Custom ROM although you will lose Motorola's Active Display, Always Listening etc...
If you want complete stock and have to reflash TWRP and root your phone, you will need to flash the stock firmware using fastboot or a utility.
Finally found 4.2.2 . When trying RSD fail at gpt bin, also fails there with manual flashing. Any ideas?
Edit...Finally got it. Different version of 4.2.2 did it.

I hope it wasn't the pre-camera 4.2.2....or you might be in a tough spot now.... Risking a brick. ?

Unless the first firmware was also pre camera... Then you're OK.

Taking OTA's is incremental, so if you are the initial shipping 4.2.2 you need to take the first 4.2.2 w/camera OTA, then the 4.4 OTA, then the 4.4.2 OTA... a real time waster and pain in the rear.
Best way... Grab the SBF for the version you want to be on, and flash it... i.e. you mention going to 4.4.2, so... grab the 4.4.2 SBF and flash it.
Since you have a Dev Edition, why not just go to 4.4.4? it has a few bug fixes, and is stable. For me and many others its no worse than 4.4.2 as far as performance and battery.
Once you arrive on the ROM you want, you can flash TWRP and root.

OTA = Incremental. Only patches the changed/updated parts.
SBF/FXZ = "all inclusive" or "image files".. and overwrites entire partitions/parts.
So yes. You can just flash the newer SBF file. (As @Darth said... as long as the SBF you are flashing is NEWER than the version on your phone... i.e. NEVER DOWNGRADE)

cricket firmware and OTA files

in case anyone needs these, here are the firmware and OTA files from the cricket variant.
signed firmware.zip can be flashed while s on if you lock the bootloader and do not modify it. they can be opened, modified and flashed if you are s off.
OTA files require you to be stock and using the correct, matching STOCK recovery.
