[Q] Enable wifi tether on AT&T Moto X? - Moto X Q&A

The Moto X is the first phone I've ever had where I want to stay on the stock ROM, but that comes with a drawback. Because mine is the AT&T version, they won't let me turn on wifi tethering. I am rooted, and have tried as many tether apps in as many configurations as I could, but still no luck. If anyone could help me out, I would be extremely grateful!
PS: I know that previously on the Moto Razr HD, you could disable the subscription check like this:
In SQLite Editor (or comparable), navigate to:
"Settings Storage : com.motorola.android.providers.settings" (the icon is a red and white hammer and wrench)
then: "settings.db"
then: "settings"
then: _id 79 "entitlement check"
Once there, change "value" field from "1" to "0"
That worked like a charm for me then, but I couldn't find any obvious similar hack in sqlite on the Moto X. Maybe someone out there with more experience knows where to look?

MMS Issues on Custom ROMs

I've seen a few different solutions to the spotty MMS issues on custom 4.2.2 ROMs floating around so I thought I would create a thread to catalog them here. For those wondering there is an issue with seemingly all the D4 4.2.2 custom ROMs that causes MMS to randomly stop working. It seems rebooting or wiping cache/dalvik seems to fix it for some but it eventually comes back. I don't send many MMS messages so I can't really attest to how well any of these work.
Solution #1:
1. You will need a root file explorer like Root Explorer.
2. Navigate to /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
3. Rename telephony.db to telephony.db.xx
4. Reboot your phone and all should be well.
(Thanks to NeoPheonixTE on DroidForums for this one)
Solution #2:
Use the Verizon Messages app from the Play Store.
(Thanks to ws6formula350 on DroidForums for this one)
Solution #3:
Go to Settings, Wireless & Networks, More..., Mobile Networks, Access Point Names. Scroll down until you find whichever APN that your phone is using - in my case, my phone uses "LTE - Verizon Internet". Tap on the selection - NOT the blue bubble on the right - and scroll down until you find "MMSC". Tap on that, and in the box that comes up, type "http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms", without the quotes. Submit, press the Menu key, tap "save", back out to the Home screen, and reset.
(Thanks to Jishkah on DroidForums for this one)
If others have suggested these solutions elsewhere let me know and I will give them credit as well.
Good luck and let us all know if any of these solutions work for you!
Hey. Made an account to say this: I'm not sure if Solution #3 works. More than anything, I've found that MMS in custom ROMs are a hit-or-miss; every once in a while, they'll send, but, a vast majority of time, they won't. I found that bit of advice - changing the MMSC setting - on another website, and it seemed to work for me. However, the Droid 4 jumps between EHRPD - Verizon Internet, and LTE - Verizon Internet, so I'd recommend applying this setting to both of those networks.
Once again, I'm not sure if that'll work for sure, but it's worth a shot, no? Another idea that I had would be to copy the APN settings from the stock ROM to whatever custom ROM that you're using - I haven't tested this out, but it may work. It may also bar you from using Wireless Tether, too. Once again, I'm not an expert.

Does Adblock Plus work over Mobile Data (3G/4G)?

I am learning how to live without root.
I've installed Adblock Plus and use the following steps to create a new APN
1. Go to "more.." in settings for wireless
2. Go to "mobile networks"
3. Go to "Access Point Names"
4. Go into the current enabled one (AT&T PHONE) and write down all settings
5. Create a new one, copying everything and set up localhost:2020 as proxy
6. Select the new APN
From browser, it appears to block the ads. Quick test on some applications also seem to suggest this is working.
Does anyone know if there is any problem with this scheme?
Thanks
Thanks for the detailed instructions!
I just setup and it also seems to be working for me too.
Did you ever find any issues with your approach?
With Vzw there is no way to create an APN.
Worked great on T-Mobile. Thanks!
Does not seem to work for me, running Sony Xperia E3 D2203 on KitKat 4.4.2
Adguard does! But needs improvement on my D Maxx.

[Q] Mobile Hotspot Help??

Hopefully someone can tell me what I am doing wrong.
I have rooted my Atrix HD (System Ver. 98.4.20.MB886.ATT.en.US...Android Ver. 4.1.1...Baseband MB886_BP-100740.071.65.04P...Kernel Ver. 3.0.42_gebf622c) installed sqlite (paid) and changed the entitlement_check line (line 57) to disabled to get the mobile hotspot feature to work.
Here is the issue...the hotspot feature is now "working" but it is not. I can change the ssid and the password and the protocols, and I can connect multiple devices that see the phone...now the fun part...NONE of them can connect to the internet. I keep receiving statements saying "limited or no internet connectivity" yet the phone has full 4G internet with or without hotspot enabled. I can surf with the phone with no issues.
Prior to changing the entitlement_check feature, I would always get the "account not setup for mobile hotspot" error message. Now the hotspot is functioning.
For whatever reason, all the devices can connect to the phone. Just no internet...HELP!!??
I am using Walmart's Family Mobile svc (cheapest around) and obviously the phone is unlocked to do so. I have no issues with the phone connecting to the internet. I have tried several laptops, a nook HD, other phones, etc..none will get the internet via my Atrix HD, but do so with my kids Tmobile phones that have no trouble hotspotting.
I bought this phone hoping I would be able to hotspot and have waited patiently until the bootloader was able to be unlocked and was able to program the options of the phone. I am a "newb" to android and not sure what to do next.
Would a new "rom" work...don't know what to do and I sold my old Atrix 4G that had no issues with hotspotting. I am using the same sim card from the 4G (had to sim card cut it to fit in the HD). My kids all have Tmobile phones and can hotspot on Family Mobile like no tomorrow.
Please help!?
Jim
Well, I think I should sum up the guide for you. This one is what I wrote on different forum in my country:
Requirement:
- Rooted AHD
Part 1: Modify system
- Install SQLite Editor 2.0.1 on ATT Atrix HD
- Open app and look at the 1st tab
- Select file "Setting Storage" with small text below:"com.motorola.android.provider.settings".
- Select "settings.db"
- Select "settings"
- Search: "dun_apn_changeable"
- Modify value from "0" to "1"
- Continue searching for "entitlement_check"
- Modify value in "entitlement_check" from "1" to "disable" (type "disable" without quote)
- Exit app and restart phone
Part 2: Config Mobile hotspot
- Open Setting > More > Mobile network > Access point
- Create a new APN and fill in the same APN information as the one you used to access mobile internet but the following box should be:
+ APN Name: "Tethering"
+ APN Type: "dun"
- Save, enable mobile data and enable mobile hotspot.
- Come back here and tell me if it works for you
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1940776&p=34145203
My current APN Type is
default,mms,supl,admin,dun
Since you're rooted, install a custom ROM. Every one I've used has tethering built in.

626s vm hot spot

Hey everyone I'm rooted and everything so I've been trying to find a way to get around paying $30 for a hot spot that should come with the phone. anyways I found a way to disable the "you are not subscribed to hot spot" thing but when I connect anything to the hot spot I keep getting errors saying the DNS couldn't resolve server names. I tried for hours with different DNS servers so I'm guessing it's something vm has done. If anyone could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it I used it a lot before I got this phone and now I'm kinda stuck :/
I know from experience that you can usb tether with pdanet and it'll hide your tethering with metro. It will not however hide hotspot HOW EVER you can use its experimental feature internet sharing which is essence creates a hotspot however I've only ever been able to connect to a phone that was with metro AND the phone that was hotspotting was not with metro. Trying to do so with my metro phone give me dns errors as well.
I haven't tried to use USB tethering yet only because some of my things can't be tethered via USB. I just don't see why I'd be getting DNS errors now and never did before. Oh wel. Surely someone here will have a solution for me soon.

I don't know if you are rooted, but I'm using Wifi Tether Router (just google an apk file) instead of trying for the native hotspot function.

Are you sure? I tried this app before and it wouldn't broadcast the network. And yes I am rooted. I found a way to partially get the native hotspot working but it's a pain in the butt. If I could figure out how to edit the apn settings I'd have it going in 5 seconds but they're locked and htc phones don't have a "hidden menu" like lg phones.
Weird... Well, If you can't get that working, I'll let you know my current configurations for that app.
keep up the good work guys.
I'm looking for a solution for the hotspot on my 626 from Verizon.
native mobile hotspot and tether on cricket
I was able to use the phone as a wifi hotspot by doing the following:
1) install the following apps: MK explorer, Axel (xml editor)
2) phone must be rooted
3) using MK explorer navigate to the following folder (root directory): /system/customize/ACC
4) make a copy of the default.xml file and rename it in case it gets corrupted
5) run Axel and open the default.xml file for editing
6) scroll down about 80% from the top of the file to find the entry (find didn't work for me):
<app
name="Tethering_provision">
^ <item
type="integer"
name="TetheringGuard_Rule">
. 3 (note:dot is in middle)
7) edit the entry to change the 3 to 0
8) use "save as" and save modified file
9) rename the edited file to default.xml
10) reboot
11) go to settings->more->mobile hotspot and tethering, click on Mobile Hotspot, click on OK, change the hotspot name and password to what you want
12) after this step the phone just sat there so I rebooted
13) hotspot now works
I have no idea if this is hidden from the carrier

Enable LG Camera app's 'Shutter sound' setting to toggle camera sound on/off (ROOT)

For those wanting to use the LG Camera app on the V40 but do not have an option to toggle the camera's sounds and want it, then the script below should enable the 'Shutter sound' setting.
*A disclaimer and a reminder that in Japan and Korea, and possibly other countries, by silencing the camera sounds you may be breaking the law iiuc - so do check! - I cannot be held liable if you are arrested, charged, fined, sent to jail, etc. - You do this at your own risk!*
That said, where I am based it is not, and I find the shutter sound annoying. There are modules around that will silence your LG Camera app, they work by changing the files containing the sound into silent/empty ones. Not a great solution if you want to have the choice about whether you want sound or not. However, there is already a setting for this buried inside the LG Camera app and this will enable it for you:
So, assuming you have Magisk installed on your phone, please run these commands from your computer:
Code:
adb shell
su
echo "resetprop ro.vendor.lge.build.target_operator TRF_VZW" > /data/adb/post-fs-data.d/enable_shutter_sound_setting.sh
chmod 755 /data/adb/post-fs-data.d/enable_shutter_sound_setting.sh
reboot
Once it restarts, load up the LG Camera app, tap the settings button (top left?), then if you scroll through the settings you should see a 'Shutter sound' setting you can toggle on and off. I've only tested this on my LM-V405EBW, it is possible other versions may be different.
If you'd like a bit more detail about what is going on here, then:
First (line) just starts up a shell on your phone
Second gives you root (you may need to grant access in Magisk)
Third writes a system property to a file to change the mobile operator your LG apps may believe they are running against. The TRF_VZW value is one of two that will allow the 'Shutter sound' setting to appear in the LG Camera app
Forth makes the file you just created executable to the android system
Fifth will reboot the phone and enable this property for the LG Camera app to use, and give you the 'Shutter sound' setting option
I should point out a caveat: this setting change may mean other LG apps may also make assumptions about what you can or cannot do as if you were a Tracfone phone. This only affects LG apps it seems though, so probably not too bad, but worth knowing perhaps . If you want to remove this change then please run:
Code:
adb shell
su
rm /data/adb/post-fs-data.d/enable_shutter_sound_setting.sh
reboot
Something I don't understand (yet) is why some report that turning the phone to silent/vibrate mode will also silence the LG Camera app's shutter sound too - this does not work on mine... not a big thing as this works well for me. Maybe it is something about starting with a LM-V405EBW V20a-IND-XX - if anyone knows, please leave a comment. Thank you
Finally, If you'd like far too much detail about this under the hood then please indulged yourself:
I downloaded the app from the phone at /system/product/priv-app/LGCameraApp/LGCameraApp.apk
Decompiled it and found this interesting piece of code in the playSound function of the SoundManager class:
Code:
if (!FunctionProperties.isSupportedShutterSoundSetting() || ... )
So looking at the isSupportedShutterSoundSetting function in the FunctionProperties class, we see that this is how it determines who has this setting:
Code:
ModelProperties.getCarrierCode() == 6;
Looking inside the getCarrierCode function of the ModelProperties class, we find that two carriers return a 6, and we also see the system property they use:
Code:
sCarrierCodeMap.put("VZW", 6);
...
if ("TRF_VZW".equals(SystemProperties.get("ro.vendor.lge.build.target_operator"))) {
sCarrierCode = 6;
So by setting the system property 'ro.vendor.lge.build.target_operator' to 'VZW' (Verizon Wireless, I'd guess) or 'TRF_VZW' (Tracfone on Verizon ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) we can enable seeing the 'Shutter sound' option in LG's Camera app's menu. Enjoy!
Update: So after playing around with other LG apps, Phone and Contacts had some issues using VZW. I didn't dig too deeply into this, but can imagine an if statement or two. I found TRF_VZW is largely an unknown operator which seems to default to OPEN, as you would probably want

So this stock is Verizon Wireless - so your build target operator will be VZW under the hood.
You may check this with:
Code:
adb shell
getprop ro.vendor.lge.build.target_operator
If I am correct, it should say 'VZW' - and why you have the 'Shutter sound' setting by default.
Before doing what the original post said, mine was set to 'OPEN' - which is what both my original and flashed firmwares were built with
