[Q] Really confusing SD card bug - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello to whoever reads this thread, I hope you can help me.
I'm looking for help since I've been stuck with this issue for a week now and don't know what to do about it.
It all started a few days after finally getting a 16GB SDCard for my Note.
This sounds weird but I can't install all apps. I can install Facebook, Bacon Reader without problem, but apps like XDA or games won't install at all. The play store will just keep saying "Couldn't install on USB storage or SD card"
I tried so many things that I don't have a clue if what I'm doing is actually useful.
Here is a few things I did to get rid of that problem :
- Wiping cache/dalvik, rebooting...many times.
- Flashing PA 4.0 Alpha again and again
- Looking for the "smdl2tmp1.asec" file in .android_secure and remove it (There's no file at all in that folder for me and I have no idea how people manage to see it since I can't really explore the root folder from Windows Explorer)
So, at this point I'm just tired of trying quick fixes and I motivate myself to do the following:
- Trying to go back to PA 3.99 RC2, but CWM is just going mad at me saying the zip file is not made for my device (status 7 error...)
- Updating CWM and trying to flash PA 3.99 RC2 after the first install failed. Fail again.
- Edit the update-script file from Windows to delete the specific "device" lines as stated on this thread. Fail again ? Fail again.
Some background info as I just thought about something that might be causing the issue.
See, Play Music for an incredibly stupid reason doesn't allow you to save music to an external sd card so I've been googling a lot and came upon that blog post giving a few tips on how to solve that issue. Maybe I f'ed up something in the process since I find that manoeuver a bit confusing.
More background info : I've been using PA since 3.69 and never have had any issue with it until that Alpha version but since nobody is reporting errors in the PA support thread it must be a problem on my side.
Oh, and while I'm at it, the loading battery animation when the phone is turned off looks really odd, like it's android from a decade ago and not the fancy one i put as the thread icon.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance for I really don't know what to do anymore. :crying:
Also sorry for bad english.
FINAL EDIT : Oops. Found the answer by myself, thanks anyway

This bug is supposed to be fixed in the current/next nightly of omnirom.

Thanks for the answer.
So...there's no way to just fix the "Couldn't install on USB storage or SD card" bug ? I don't really want to be forced to change for Omni...

CM7 issues?

I've searched and haven't seen folks with this issue but here goes:
I've installed CM7 (daily release 3/22) on wifes phone (D1).
I've kept the default governor and set the max CPU to 700 (800 drained batterly life far too fast).
After a reboot or fresh install the phone operates smoothly as expected. After a day or two, the UI becomes quite laggy... alomost painfully so. I've tried two different versions of CM7 (I think the other was RC2 available through ROM manager) bot with similar results. I changed the governor to interactive and no difference.
Anyone else with these issues?
My DINC loves CM7... so thisis a bit dissapointing.

I used this and it really has made my phone run smoothly. I run lots of apps and special affects that just tears through my memory if it isn't managed. I had to constantly kill apps before I could start other before I applied this. Only had it for a day but I see the difference.
@OP I'd give his supercharge a try.

Root Done. Cyanogenmod?

I've rooted so much and learned so much in the past month that I'd like to take that extra step. Opinions?
I'd like to try Cyanogenmod, but I've been failing miserably trying to put it on my device.
I've tried flashing it through this way: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S:_Full_Update_Guide but I couldn't get ClockworkMod to reboot. Once I did get it to reboot I had a hard time loading or flashing Cyanogenmod because it kept saying that it failed to load and installation was aborted. What am I doing wrong guys? I'm following those instructions in the link to a T. I put the gapps file and the update cm 7.0.1 in the folder called the external_sd even though I do not have an external SD card, but I was guessing that's where the root of the internal memory is. Am I missing something? Is it really this hard? And is Cyanogenmod really worth it?
put the update/zip file in internal SD,not inside any folder.remove external SD card.now try flashing.

Couple things. When I connect my phone to the computer there is no folder that says internal SD unless the stuff that shows up with all the folders is the internal SD. I do not have a removable SD card.
Do I have to flash or wipe anything before I put the update/zip file on my phone?
Ok, successfully did it! I installed the cyanogenmod so I'll take it for a spin. However, there is one thing that I can't figure out. I'm trying to download all the Google apps from the market, but anything that I try downloading from the market it just stays in the downloading progress bar and nothing happens.
I installed the separate apk file gapps-gb-20110828-signed the same way I installed Cyanogenmod, but nothing. Can anyone help please? Also, I used the Navigation app a lot, but I can't even seem to find that one on the market...
Now it's working. Ok. Few questions for you guys. Any way to turn off an "LED notification" whenever I get a text message the bottom soft keys light up and stay lit up until I check the message.
Still don't know how to get the turn by turn Navigation application.
EDIT: How do you get Swype as well on Cyanogenmod?

I find that the stock keyboard is not the best. I've read that its predictive text and spell corrections is supposed to be good, but it looks like it's not picking up anything at all and it's not correcting any spelling. What gives?

cmod7 kindle app - no menu bar when reading

Don't know it this is a setting somewhere or what, but I have a question on using the Kindle app on the Nook Color running cmod 7 (7.20 stable). The app runs okay, but I seem to be missing a navigation bar once I start reading a book. It only shows the title and where I am - no options to go back to the Kindle menu (like if I want to read a different book). The only way I can get back to the Kindle menu is to reboot.
I've searched the forum and the closest thread to this problem talks about changing the settings - I don't seem to have any settings to adjust. Even if I go to settings/applications/manage applications/downloaded/kindle there still aren't any changable options.
Sorry for so many questions - I'm a noob. I've searched the net on this and searched this forum with no luck.
any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

What version of the Kindle app are you using? Try updating to the latest version.
Also try playing with the settings in cm. Go to settings, cyanogenmod settings, tablet tweaks, and play with checking and unchecking disable full screen.

uh.....I'm not sure
Thanks for the reply! I downloaded the Kindle app via Amazon, so hopefully it is whatever is their latest. I sure didn't know about the settings, so I'll give the go and see what happens! I do get the drop down from the top stating the title, and the pull-up from the bottom, but the bottom only has how much I've read so far.
Thanks again!
Dave
EDIT: Well, I don't have the tablet options. Everything in there is for a phone! Seems kind of weird on a device that doesn't have a phone.
lost cm settings
I tried the cyanogenmod settings, and while everything there was for a phone, I turned off things like vibrate, etc. - pretty much everything dealing with a phone. Now when I try to go back to cyanogenmod settings, the app aborts.
I also look in the dev settings and see a config file in there that set s default resolutions, etc., and includes an option that looks like it hides the menu bar, so I used terminal (I am familiar with Linux) and checked for such a file for the system but wasn't able to locate one. I'm wondering if there's a setting like that somewhere, as I don't get any back arrows, menu, etc., just on the pages, and was wondering if that was also stopping me from getting the full menu bar in the Kindle app?
So you do NOT see the word Kindle in orange Aa, magnifying glass and three vertical dots and a bookmark icon as well as the blue dot and position in book at the bottom of screen when you touch anywhere that is NOT the far left and far right of the screen?
And you do NOT see the back, home, recent apps and "menu" button in the bar at the bottom of the screen outside of the kindle window?
Dev settings? no such beast in CM7 or CM9
There is a Developer options which has nothing to do with any sort of resolutions..
I suggest you reinstall CM7.2 release from the official site, stay out of ADB, and stay away from all the various "work in progress" roms until you can actually navigate the default device...
I think you probably got a bit happy and broke something .. there is a setting in CM7 settings to disable fullscreen apps from hiding the "menubar" at the far bottom of the screen and that should be under tablet tweaks in the system settings app.
Yep, none of those
Yep - none of those. This was just after getting 7.0 stable installed and loading in the gapps, since the gapps file was dated just slightly after that release. Immediately went and got Kindle and Nook reader apps. Tried them to be sure they looked like they were working and then applied the zip of 7.2 stable. I didn't try the cyanogenmod settings until later when it was posted in this thread. Again, there are no options in there for a tablet - only a phone. I don't mind going back and doing everything over, just as long as I don't end up in that deadly embrace of things aborting and google market not working. I'll let you know what happens.
If I flush out the Kindle cache I can get back to seeing my titles, but that really defeats the purpose of reading on the device.
Something is not right
Okay, I downloaded everything again and made the microSD. I booted the microSD, did the format data/system reset, went to mounts and did the format /system, while there I tried the format /data - it fails. I had noticed before that when the data/system reset is run and completes, I can no longer do anything - I have to manually power off, wait a while, and power back on. Did all that, went to advance and cleared the kelvich or whatever it's call cash. Installed the cmod7.20 stable. Took out the microSD and rebooted. All of my old apps, etc., are still there. I also was looking at settings and see that the settings I changed were under "phone", not using the cyanomod settings app - it still just aborts.
So, what have I got to do to completely clean all this stuff off and then try installing again? As you can imagine, the number of attempts, partial successes, successes (at least I thought it was only the Kindle app that wasn't showing the menu), etc., we're talking all kinds of hours starting Monday night - probably at least 10 hours each day. Now I'm no further than when I started. For now I'm going to load the old 1.4.1 image again for the umpteenth time and hope someone can tell me how to clear this all up, or else recommend a different android that will run on the Nook Color without problems.
I still think if I can clear EVERYTHING (well, not /boot, obviously) so I'm starting with a CLEAN slate again it may help. I just don't have a clue how to do that using cwm recovery.
Still no good
I redownloaded everything again, created the microsd and tried to install 1.4.1 just to get back to a clean starting point. Can't get beyond where it asks for B&N userid/password as the keyboard shows for about 1/2 a second, no matter what I do. So, I tried the format data/system reset again and just loaded in the cmod 7.20 stable. Again, after booting, everything is still there - the google apps and all. How do I get rid of all this stuff so I can try an install from a clean slate? Right now I've been going thru all the data folders I can find and manually removing everything there. I would like to delete a lot of apps, but I never seem to be able to "uninstall".
So, before I start over again, can someone tell me how to clear EVERYTHING (except /boot, /emmc [unless I need to],/sd*) so I have a clean system first?
Thanks!

Boot to CWM and do a factory reset. If you don't have CWM on emmc, make a bootable CWM SD. You can get one on my tips thread linked in my signature. A factory reset clears /data, /cache and clears any apps you may have installed to SD. It does not touch boot, system or emmc media.
no good

That's what I've been doing - format data/factory reset option from cwm. Before rebuilding the entire microSD on my Windows PC I have also done a complete format of the media. I then boot CWM from the microSD and install the cmod7 7.20 stable zip - I always assumed this was going straight to the device since when I remove the microSD and boot cmod7 is there. However, none of the pre-existing apps are gone - everything is still there.
I've tried using CWM, advanced options, and format /data - it always fails. So I'm wondering if perhaps the format of /data the is part of the factory reset also fails but the script doesn't error out. Right now I'm going through an extremely time consuming task of manually removing the files and folders in /data via the terminal and su so I get the permissions. If there is another quicker way to clear /data I'd sure appreciate knowing. I've tried some of the treed removes from my Linux experience but they don't seem to work.
Thanks!
Dave
EDIT: forgot to mention - I'm trying your partition restores from the link in your signature - only the "safe" ones - I don't to do that partition 2 stuff and really mess up. Perhaps this will clean everything off.
Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!

I followed the link and did the repartitioning and formating with the first 2 scripts (left partition 2 alone!). Installed 7.20 stable - I now have the bar at the bottom of my screens. I'm waiting to format a 16gb microSD then I'm going to try the Kindle app out again, but I'd say this looks REALLY promising! Your scripts did what I wanted to do - they cleared everything out!
Thank you SO much!!!!!

Thank to everyone!
I just wanted to post a big THANK YOU to all the people who made cwm and cmod 7 so this whole thing would even be possible. Thanks to everyone here who helped me! Now "all" I have to do is just try to learn this! Maybe some place down the road I might try some programming, but I don't know how different it will be from my C using GTK++ on Linux. But first, to learn!
Thank you everyone SO much!

I know you got it all working and I am glad, but just for future reference, the problem you were having probably stemmed from using an old version of CWM. You have to use version 3.2.0.1 or newer or the format of data will fail on the newer nooks. The one in my tips thread is the newest version.
Thanks!

I did look at the the tar file I downloaded when I was trying to install from a 4gb microSD - it does say only 3.0.2.8, so I'm sure the 16gb I ended up installing from was probably the same, so I'll go grab what you recommended!
Since I don't want to have the problem again, I'm DEFINITELY going to follow your advise!
I had another suspicion for what may have happened, and why I had so much problem from the get-go with cmod 7 - I tried someone else's "put android on your nook" thing, which I know tried to root the nook and then dump some stuff in, and that didn't end up working.
I'm just glad your posts have gotten me going correctly!! BTW - the Kindle app works fine now, too!
Again, thank you SO much!!

Want to make sure I get this all right
You've been such a great help - I hope you don't mind a couple of more questions:
- The new CWM you recommend is the 5.x.x.x that's on the link, correct?
- Are there any newer releases of Android for the Nook Color? Right now I don't know anything about Android (complete noob [LOVE the movie on the registration page!] ). I know someone who is quite versed in all of this he mentioned that I'm running some name (honeycomb or something like that) and that there are newer ones out there (maybe that was honeycomb). At any rate, are there some updates I could run to make this any "better"? I know the version I'm running also seems to think it's a phone - is there one where it actually thinks it's a tablet?
Again, thank you SO much!

Yes that CWM is attached to my tips thread linked in my signature.
You can try CM9 which is tablet based, but it is still in alpha and not as stable as CM7. Don't use honeycomb, it is old and very buggy.
Thanks!
Thanks again for the info! I'll get that copy of cwm right away. Since CM9 is still early, I'll wait on any updates. I really don't know anything yet, but I am having fun with the Nook Color being all Android now. It's nice having the Kindle app and the Nook app - this way have all my books on 1 device, and that works great!
Thanks again!

Not a compatible device error

Hello all. This is my first post here so I apologize in advance for the Noob question or my failure to find it buried in the available topics if it has already been answered. I am new to modding my nook and though I have done some reading up on it I know I have a lot more to learn.
I recently followed the following Link found on this site to do an SD card boot of my nook HD+ tablet:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2583952
I am glad to say that I was able to perform this without a hitch and even loaded the GAPPS Kitkat 4.4.X stock package file afterward. It was incredibly easy to do as the instructions were very well written for someone making a first time attempt.
So, my question is this. After doing all of this, booting up in the custom format to kitkat 4.4.x I go to the google play store to install a new game (Star Wars Commander) that wouldn't work on my standard Nook interface and I still get an error that my device is not compatible.
Am I correct in assuming that this error is still occuring because the boot is off of the SD card and somehow it is still reading my internal memory (EMMC) directory that is android 2.x or am I way off base? Did I potentially miss something in my steps or is this app simply looking for something non-software related? I was under the impression that most, if not all, apps only care about the version of android, nothing else.
Any help or directions you can give would be great. I am not afraid to dive into a long read to learn more on how to mod and even eventually root my tablet. I figured I would star with the easy to remove SD card format first for my first try.
It has nothing to do with being an SD install. Play Store uses many properties to determine if an app is listed as compatible with any specific device (screen size and density, version of ROM, device name, etc). There is not much you can do to improve how Play Store lists it. And just because Play Store say it is not compatible does not mean it will not run satisfactorily on your device. In fact, most times it will. The solution is to set the unknown sources setting and install the app from another store (like Amazon, 1mobile.com, etc) or sideload the apk file from another device.
Sent from my BN NookHD+ using XDA Premium HD app
Thanks leapinlar. I will try that tonight.

Error - the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped

Hello gentlemen,
I'm back, with a what I hope is a minor issue. I hope someone can help me.
I have the following head unit (Universal Model):
KLD Universal model S07 - RK3181 (quadcore)
800x480 resolution - KK 4.4.4_23072015
MCU version MTCB-KLD2-V2.67 (Jul 09 2015 19:15:51)
Kernal version 3.0.36+ [email protected] #396 (Wed Jul 22 17:40:16 CST 2015)
Build number RK3188-ENG4.4.4 23072015.09:09:11
CPU ARMv7 1.6Ghz (x4)
It is rooted via the factory settings method. But other than that it is pretty much still stock (I added a cooling fan). The only other apps I add where PowerAmp, PowerAmp Toast, Xposed Framework, XposedMTC, and Lucky Patcher (I believe this app fully unlocks the PowerAmp app). I have had no issue with it for the last 7 months.
However, the other day it took a long time to bootup. Now I have some google service errors: "the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped"
I have to keep on clicking "OK" in order for the error pop-ups to close. I have to repeat this several times until all the pop-ups finally stop. Other than that, everything else is working properly. Although I notices that Xposed and PowerAmp Toast do not start (no icons on the top notice bar).
I tried going to Settings/App Manager/Google Service Framework - and then I click Forces Stopped it, Disable, Clear Data, Clear Cache, Enable. Then I reboot, but I still get the same google service errors.
Can someone please help me fix this? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Galo
PS - One other thing. This is related to the XDA website in general. How can I get rid of that stupid side panel (Analysis & Opinion / More XDA New). It keeps on automatically scolling and gets in the way of reading and typing. It is really annoying. Can someone tell me how to switch this off. Thanks again
Lucky Patcher has a "clear cache" option. Maybe try that? Should force all the Android apps to optimize at boot and maybe fix your issues.
Hello BullGawd,
I already tried that. I also tried going into Settings/App Manager and clearing the cache for Google Services Framework.
I even tried by pressing the small reset botton on the face of the head unit. I am trying to avoid doing a factory reset from the recovery screen.
Has anyone had this issue with this these head units? How did you get this error fixed.
Thanks,
ggee
Hi guys,
My unit is stock. But I think I am just going to flash a newer version of the factory firmware (kitkat 4.4.4). In the old threads there used to be two repositories. One was the huifei-fileserver, and the other was a Google Drive site. Now I only see the huifei-fileserver.
Anyways, I downloaded the latest KLD RK3188 800x480 firmware:
http://huifei.fs-fileserver.de/cont...D 4.4.4/800x480/KLD 800x480 20150820 Factory/
However, it looks like the firmware .img file is made up of two parts. Both are zip files and each one contains a .img file.
-Am I supposed to merge both of these files into one .img file? If so, how do I do this?
-Or am I supposed to put both of these .img files into the root of the sd card (then insert to the gps slot)?
I know how to flash and update the firmware. However, I have only ever seen this process done using one .img file - not two. Can someone please clarify what to do with these two files in order to flash them properly. I do not want to gamble and brick my unit.
Thanks,
ggee
is one an mcu.img file? If so, remote that and only flash update.img

Hello,
The first zip file says Part1 and its 204MB in size. This zip contains one update.img (634MB when extracted). The second zip file says Part2 and its 91MB in size. This zip also contains one update.img (yet it is the same size when extracted - 634MB). This is confusing and should be something easy and straight forward.
I am not sure if both of these files need to be merged. If they are supposed to be merged, how would you do this (what app does this).
-OR-
I am not sure if both update.img files need to be copied to the root of the sd card. However, both files cannot have the same name within the same directory, otherwise one file will overwrite the other. One file name will need to be changed. But I believe once you change the name, the head unit will not recognize it as a firmware image anymore.
Can someone please clarify this.
Thanks,
ggee
ok you need to use winrar first to combine the two. Are you sure these weren't rar files NOT zip files?

Hello,
Yes, these are winrar files and I also use the winrar software. Sorry, I tend to use the word "zip" when talking about compressed file formats in general. Both files I am speaking about are winrar (Part1 and Part2). And each has an update.img file. How do I combine the files? Is there a special function within winrar?
BTW - do you have any idea about my original problem (google services stopped working)? Since I have not gotten a definitive answer, I was thinking about either doing a factory resetting, or just updating the firmware and mcu. I decided to update and that is why I'm stuck on these two "winrar" files, and how to combine them.
Thanks,
ggee
if you search that is a very common problem. Resetting won't fix it. Open first rar and extract. It will then combine the two into one update.img file.

Hello Dave,
Thanks for pointing this out. I honestly have never had to merge two winrar files together before. I was definitely overthinking this process. I guess this happens when dealing with the more complex issues here, and not wanting to brick the unit. I really appreciate it.
As for my google services problem. I have done several searches on this topic. I do see lots of people asking how to fix it. But I do not see posts answering them back with a fix. The only other answer I was able to search out is on the Old Threat Q&A sticky (Problems and Solutions Found by Users):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56791126#post56791126
This is a very vague answer and does not give much detail. I tried what they mentioned and it does not work for me. I think after the Old Threat was split, the answers are probably scattered around in partial chunks. If you have a the link to an answer/solution to this, I would be greatly appreciative. Otherwise, I am forced to have to update/flash the firmware on an issue that probably could have been easily solved. If it is a very common issue, maybe it should be its own sticky so that people can easily see it.
Thanks again.

There is no fix but myself and another person did try a bunch of different versions so search for it to find the most stable version.

Hello guys,
Yes. I was able to correct the problem.
All I did was re-flash the stock firmware rom. You can either re-flash your current version (if you have the update.img file for your head unit model). Or you can find the post in the Android Auto forum that lists most of the stock firmware roms. Make sure you select and download the correct one for your head unit type and model. I simply went back to the seller and asked them to send me the latest official stock firmware rom.
If you have certain apps and setting that you want to keep, make sure you make a back up before re-flashing the rom. Otherwise you will have to reinstall the apps and setting. Since I am basically keeping my head unit in a stock status (except for normal root), I just skipped the back up step and re-flashed the rom.
Extract the .zip or .rar of the firmware rom image. Then copy it to an SD card and insert it into you head unit. Reboot the head unit into recovery mode. Make sure to clear caches while you are in the recover mode, before re-flashing the rom. Then follow the menus for flashing the rom.
Later,
ggee
