Is there any way to tell the phone to open a 3rd party camera app (ie Camera Zoom FX or FV-5) rather than the stock app when the wrist twist is used?

So since the update the stock camera (for me at least) has been much better. I used to use Camera Zoom FX but i deleted it and use the stock since it's easier to switch between camcorder/still shots and i can actually mute the shutter sound.
But as I was playing with it I randomly noticed that you have to use 6MP to get a full screen shot, vs. with 8MP it's kind of centered in the screen. I also noticed in another thread someone mentioned using the 'ok' button on the keyboard could help force the camera to focus vs. waiting for its slow zoom in/out routine. This kind of sparked my interest to what settings does everyone use to get the best pics? Do you still use 3rd Party Apps? Any tips/tricks you use? It's my main camera since i don't own a separate digital camera so any input is welcome
....you can zoom in and out with the volume control buttons.
hmm nobody?

awesome man thanks i'll try it out
does the camera work with other apps or can you only use the system app?
I'm particularly interested in
DMD Panorama
Lapse It
Fotor
can they be used?
I don't know about any of those specifically, but the android Camera API certainly works. Most 3rd party camera apps probably won't recognize the hardware zoom buttons (they seem to work as volume up/down by default), but the special purpose camera app I'm working on seems to be functioning well so far.
ah so zoom is special to the hardware on the device
zooming should still work fine if the app supports pinch zooming.
so does anyone use these apps on the Samsung successfully with zoom?
The "paper camera" app that comes with the camera (AT&T version, anyway) can operate the zoom using an onscreen slider, so zoom physically works in the Camera API, but unless the individual app specifically decides to intercept the hardware volume up/down keys and map them to zoom, then it will need some other way to control zoom (like the onscreen slider in paper camera). How many apps do that (other than the native samsung app), I have no idea.

The Camera button seems to be tied to the "intelligent auto" mode.
Even when I press the shutter button while I'm in the Whatsapp Camera Mode, the Sony Camera App opens and the Whatsapp Camera Mode vanishes into background without taking a picture.
When phone is rooted, try freezing stock camera app and then try again while you have another app installed. That could work

On non root, simply decativate stock camera app . Install new one from playstore, and the button will open your new app. Sadly with a lockscreen you don't get a fast track to the cam, but you will have to unlock your device prime of shooting pictures.
