Any ideas guys?

Yes. Only explanation is that it's somehow controlled by the SIM card. One that's acting normal is on TMobile and the other is on AT&T. Also, both are XT1053, but one shows 4G and another shows 4G LTE. Has to be SIM-controlled... I hate AT&T!
EDIT: nope... not it.

Yes. This is what's driving me nuts. Although one is completely virgin and another one I've been using.
So if you swap the sims between the two phones the odd behavior doesn't also change? I know certain providers like to specify what the phone should indicate, this really sounds like of those cases.
I haven't swapped but saw the other phone show same 4g LTE icon. I guess AT&T is forcing it to always on.

Swapped cards... it is the damn AT&T that's forcing it!

If you want the somewhat technical reason, inside the SystemUI.apk, Motorola has modified it and added a bools.xml which basically turns on and off many carrier related stuff.
For example, Sprint sim cards change the signal icons to 6 bars, verizon 5 bars, and if you had an AT&T phone, the AT&T icons.
Just thought I would add this.:good:
That's what I figured. I also thought that the TMobile version would be immune from silly AT&T crap like this, but guess not.

Well, you do get an unlockable bootloader and no AT&T logo on the back.

is gsm possible with sprint htc one as like droid dna from verizon ?
is it sim based ?
Yes, but you would have to unlock it. To unlock it, you have to have an active Sprint plan.
The SIM tray is located at the top of the left side.
Yeah I noticed gsm option on the phone... Pretty cool

You know what else I noticed? The GSM data option. Has anyone tried it out at all (while on Sprint, anyway)? I'd imagine you'd get hit with a roaming fee of some kind, if you even managed to pull a connection. I don't know that Sprint has roaming deals cut with GSM providers.
How the heck do you remove it? Or can you?

You can't without rooting.

I guess since it's allowed on the iphone, people don't really care, so they thought why not do it for all the phones. ATT does it will all their phones.

Going from verizon to att isn't much of a difference. I guess you should have gone with tmobile if you didn't want carrier branding or bloatware. The tmo moto x has nothing.

I bought a htc one on ebay and I was able to activate the phone no problem and it works but im having a few issues. The biggest issue is that the phone network operator name is HTC and not sprint. So when you are at your lock screen it says htc at the top instead of sprint. Then I noticed that under mobile network settings I don't have roaming control or data guard or any of those settings....they simply are not there. I'm guessing I don't see those options because of the network operator name is htc and not sprint. Ive done a factory reset and no go....did the whole prl and profile updates.
Is this phone unlocked maybe? It has a sprint sim card. Anyone have any clue as to what is going on?
It sounds like it maybe a unlocked HTC One I'm not sure to be honest with you, does it register Sprints LTE network?

Yea it registers on the 4g LTE network. Again the biggest problem is that I have no options for roaming, data guard, international roaming etc

Hey there. I got this new moto x and have been holding off on is upgrades until I can get my bearings on what I need to do to ensure fully unlocked and customizable phone in the future as I caught wind of issues doing so post kk. Twice now my Sim has stopped working. Wondering if this was a known issue or if I need to investigate prior to visit the warranty
Thanks in advanced for any feedback.

Just understand that if you really have an XT1053 on ATT, it doesn't support all the bands ATT uses for LTE so you'll fall back to HSPA

Interesting. On 4g now and thought I checked for compatibility.
My issue is that I drop all communication. Not that I step down in speed.

Right, the missing LTE bands shouldn't cause total loss of service.
For ATT there is 4G HSPA and 4G LTE.. not sure how the GSM varients report each. And the XT1053 does support the primary LTE band ATT uses.
Hey there,
I had the same issue. Got a XT1058 and am using it on T-Mobile. I kept loosing signal completely. Sim Card not recognized.
The problem I found is that if you are using a sim card that has been cut to fit the tray will cause signal loss issue.
Went to T-Mobile got a new sim card and been using it without a problem.
Let us know if this helps you.

I've searched everywhere.. All throughout the q&a but nothing so my apologies if I missed it or if this was posted/asked again... But anyway is the sprint nexus 6 compatible with other carriers like straight tall or att, T-Mobile, Verizon? And if so will it get 4g LTE on those networks?

I also have a similar question. Can a sim card from an overseas carrier be used on a Sprint Nexus 6?
Im not too sure about your question but based on the following website, it seems positive.

yes. itll work on att, and sprint/verizon(if the imei gets put into their system since they are cdma carriers, or you put in a currently used nano sim). the tmobile nexus 6 is exactly the same as the one you buy from the play store.
I'm successfully using Straight Talk with the AT&T SIM on my Nexus 6 from Sprint. It's an unlocked phone despite what the guys at the Sprint store try to tell you.

you can't change it manually. it gets changed according to your service/sim card.
That's what I figured
