[Q] Decryption - Moto X Q&A

Is it possible to decrypt using the stock ROM, or at least get TWRP to be able to backup the encrypted phone?
Thanks

Umm, I think you mean deodex or odex.
And yes but you need an unlocked bootloader or root to install TWRP.

No I encrypted the phone from Settings > Security> Encrypt Phone. I know on the Nexus 4 there was an option to decrypt afterwards. I also knew that TWRP could mount the encrypted partition on the N4. I have Verizon now though so no Nexus for me. It looks like the Moto X is only able to be decrypted via factory reset. I was wondering if there was another unofficial method to decrypt such as a command line command.
Thanks

You didn't state this in your OP.

Sorry. I thought asking to decrypt was clear enough. (My bad) Anyway is there a way to get TWRP reading the encrypted partition? I want to have encryption for security reasons, but still be able to create TWRP backups in case I break something.
Thanks
PS: Decryption works fine too since then I can TWRP backup and re-encrypt.

How did you get TWRP to work with encryption on your MotoX?

TWRP sadly does not work with the encryption. I had to reinstall the stock recovery, encrypt, then install TWRP again if you want. You can't flash or make nandroid backups but at least the phone is encrypted.

As far as I know there is no way to install a recovery without unlocking the Bootloader and you will need CWM or TWRP to install this fix.

How did you install TWRP if your phone is not unlocked?
If you have a working recovery it would not hurt to install the fix, as it seems to be the only installation method
Of course I can not garuantee for anything.
Because you do not need to unlock to install recovery....
Just flash the zip in either cmw or twrp recovery
Or just extract the build.prop from the zip and push it manually.
But to be honest, why does barclays need a build.prop tweak to work. I wouldn't trust my bank in this case

I know is slightly OT, but how would I do that? I thought you would have to flash some custom kernel to get a working recovery. The dual recovery for locked BL is still work in progress isn't it?
Thanks in advance!
It works fine for 40 seconds then reboots. That's more than enough to flash a small zip like that. It just is not write long enough for a backup or restore.
Also you do not flash a partition for recovery as Sony devices do not have a recovery partition. Recovery on Sony devices hijacks the chargemon file to boot up into it.
I am not 100% sure about all the technicalities so don't shoot me if I am wrong on that, but the recovery for locked bootloaders will work for small flashes.

Sadly the barclays banking app doesn't work on a rooted phone, and this is a fix for it to work.

Are you sure? What part of rooting affects the build.prop? None that I am aware of.

Only way with a locked Bootloader is described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2455959
But it is still in development and I would not advise it if you're not 100% sure what you're doing.
You could also unlock your phone and flash the Advanced Stock, Doom or any other kernel containing a recovery, but you will loose your Sony DRM Keys (Camera, X-Reality,...). They can be backed up (Backup TA partition) and restored, but the procedure is not that easy either.
Is this banking app really that important?

I understand that bit, but rooting does not affect the build.prop, so why would modding it let the app think your phone is not rooted? Please can you send me a link to the thread you posted a picture of so I can look inside the zip and see what it is trying to do

bumping this thread as it's related to my post since that's my Cwm zip in op, barclays checks the build prop for the debug keys and if it's successful says Device is rooted, barclays latest versions have much more advanced detection methods

Does it wipe whole data, including user data?
Right now I use stock 4.3 only with root and custom TWRP recovery. It would be the best for me to flash .ZIP file with rooted 4.4 trough recovery
At the beginning you have to choose if you want to format the user data. But ur right, the easiest way for those with custom recovery is a flashable ZIP.

For a Wi-Fi tablet, you really generally only have to push /system and maybe /boot through fastboot. It's two terminal commands, which is rather faster much of the time. That said, that presumes familiarity and comfort with the fastboot tool.

Especially that I don't want to backup all my aps with TB. And I don't even know it there's root already for N7's kitkat so I could restore all apps with Titanium Backup
Going back to stock and flashing the OTA using TWRP was the easiest method for me, now I got 4.4 rooted with OC and perfectly running.

All y'all are overcomplicating this. There is nothing magical about the google script and download. Its just 4 partition images (boot, system, data and recovery) and batch file that runs a simple script to flash them. We already have the data we want and the recovery we want. So pull the images out of the file (they are buried under three compressions...its ridiculous). Pull boot.img and system.img. Then boot to recovery and factory reset. Then boot to bootloader. Then in a terminal on your PC, fastboot flash boot boot.img then fastboot flash system system.img. The reboot to recovery and flash the latest supersu.zip. The reboot, setup and restore with Titanium. Done. No need to ditch your recovery or blow away the media section of data.
Caveat...this assumes you are already on bootloader 4.23. There is no new bootloader for KK.
Can someone post power.grouper.so from /system/lib/hw 4.3 version? can't flash 4.4 because custom kernel and that file is unexpected contents... flashing stock kernel didn't help
Waiting patiently, I know it'll be out eventually and I'm in no rush. My tablet's usb connection hasn't worked in a long time, it charges fine but lsusb never registers anything. It's a hardware problem, I replaced the screen last month and I noticed the plug was slightly damaged.
TL;DR Some of us can only upgrade from a flashable zip, no usb connection means no fastboot
Thanks

KTU84P (4.4.4) Updater

Your bootloader must be unlocked to use this. If your bootloader is not already unlocked, unlocking it will wipe your data and this method is not recommended.
This is a modified factory image that will not erase your user data or custom recovery. This can be used even if you’re rooted and with modified system files, xposed framework, or custom recovery. Once installed you will lose root, just flash supersu in your custom recovery. Xposed should still be on your device so just go into the app and re-install it. For any modified system files, you will have to re-modify those.
This is intended for those on the stock rom, rooted, and with a custom recovery. It’ll work if you have a custom rom but will put the stock system on.
I am not responsible for anything you do to your device so flash at your own risk. Always backup before doing any significant changes to your device. I would recommend off your device in case something happens
.
To use, download the modified factory image here http://d-h.st/mYI Use 7-zip or winrar to extract the files.
Supersu by chainfire can be found here, CWM / TWRP / MobileODIN installable ZIP: http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu
Boot into the bootloader. From a cmd window opened where the flash-all file is just type flash-all. You can use shift, right click on the occam-ktu85l-Modified folder to open a command window in the correct folder. ADB/FASTBOOT must be intalled on your PC.
You can also just double click on the flash-all.bat
This is tested on a windows machine; however it should work on a Mac too, flash the flash-all.sh.
work like a charm on Mac
Man, you guys are fast! :good:

Thanks, that was one suggestion I've found. Unfortunately nothing has worked for me. It apparently is a bigger issue than I knew. There's already a ticket for it here: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=62516 Hopefully they fix it soon, because with 4.4 and 4.4.2 I got a lot of random reboots, and with 4.4.3/.4 I can't enable the wifi hotspot.

Anyway, I will try with Wug and report later with results.

Worked flawlessly. Of course you can manually fastboot flash system, boot, and radio and not the data from the occam zip package so as not to lose your data

Forced Encryption Question.

OK so I flashed CM12 and it encrypted my device again. I attempted to flash Pure Shamu and realized It would not run once it asked for a password during the boot process because encryption was active. Here's the main question If I install a ROM that requires encryption to be off Like Pure Shamu, could I format my data partition after flashing the ROM so it could boot properly??
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
You can unencrypted by wiping data (and storage) if your ROM / kernel doesn't enforce encryption. This will mean losing all your /decade data though
wiping data/storage won't unencrypt if you are using an unecrypted kernel. formatting data will do it though.

Agreed, by default in TWRP formats when wiping. But if you have set the "use RM -Rf instead of format" option, you'll need to unset it or use the format options.
Yea basically, I'm going to install a ROM that uses a unencrypted kernel, then format my user data before I boot the ROM, should do the trick right ? I'm also using TWRP recovery. Ive been flashing ROMS since my gnex, but this encryption stuff has made it a pain .

I haven't set anything other than what is set by default in TWRP. So I it should properly format the partition and allow a ROM with a unencrypted kernel to boot up right?

flash the rom/kernel/gapps/su first. because after formatting your data, you will lose all your storage.
Yes for sure, My process would be to wipe factory reset, install unencrypted Kernel/ROM, install gapps, install SU then format user data, then boot ROM . one last question, when should I be unmounting the storage ?

Move app to SD card without root on T713?

Is it possible to move applications to the SD card without root on the T713? If so is there anything special to do to make that work? I put in an SD card, but none of the apps I've been moved on my old asus tablet are showing any way to move them. Given that the device only has 32G of internal memory, I'm really hoping there is a way to do this.
Thanks,

The answer as of now is no, this cannot be done. But, with 32GB of internal storage, why would you need to?
A few large games can burn through that space pretty quickly. I have used FolderMount with root before to help do similar, but I was reading about some issues with DRM video after rooting, so I don't know if I want to root or not.
