Chrome on Android? - Google Chromecast

I thought I read somewhere that you can cast your Chrome tabs on your Android device to the Chromecast. I can't find any information on it anywhere. Am I crazy?

Yes you are nuts. They are apparently working on mirroring but don't expect it anytime soon.

Not mobile Chrome. Only desktop (computer) Chrome.
Mobile Chrome doesn't support extensions, hence no Cast extension and no casting.

Thanks. Seems like a huge oversight considering the desktop Chrome is capable.

Design decision, I'm sure.
The desktop Chrome does real-time encoding of the tab (or desktop), in addition to whatever rendering is going on. That's how it achieves tab casting - and that's why tab casting doesn't work well on underpowered machines. It's also why there's lag.
Makes more sense for them to pursue screen mirroring built into the kernel, rather than an app, to reduce latency and ensure a good user experience.

Actually the issue is that the Mobile version of Chrome does not support Chrome Apps like the Desktop version does.
To cast from Chrome requires an Chrome App available in the Chrome store...
I suppose at some point in the future they will find a way to make Chrome Apps work on Mobile Chrome.

I sure hope so!
Didn't the guy who used to be in charge of Android recently take over Chrome?
Or some department that control both maybe?
It's about time they make Chrome fully functional on Android.

Yes, only if your computer is running XBMC at the time and yo have UPNP sharing turned on.
However, you don't need the XBMC program on your tablet to stream music or videos from your XBMC library on your PC; You can use UPNPbubble from the Play store to access the shared library and MX Player (or any other player) to play them.
i have an iomega nas drive and its streams great from it to the nexus 7 ... the only thing with videos its still software decoding not gpu yet

Hopefully we get Teg3 support on XBMC when it hits beta. There is definitely not going to be Teg2 (h/w decode drivers) for XBMC Android, but theres a chance we could see Teg3 fully supported. :>
That is fantastic! Can't wait to try it.
They really need to work on a touch friendly skin for xbmc though, I can see him struggling to hit list items.
theres two skins cooked in to the (precompiled apk) download build, confluence and a touch friendly theme for smaller screens

Not true. I've been using a beta version I found somewhere around here, and it works exactly like XBMC on a PC. You can add sources from several kinds of network shares or local stuff on your device. I stream all my stuff from simple windows/smb shares, with no special sharing program running on the PC, and it works great.

I installed the APK from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1772433
It struggles with 720p MKVs right now, but I don't think it's optimised for the Tegra 3 chipset yet.
yup, it's software only decode for now.
even so, it's still a very awesome build for a pre-alpha :>
Tried it out last night and work really well streaming from my Nas.
Anyone have a link to getting LiveOnlineFooty on XBMC

i never understood the whole point of XBMC .. so it allows you to stream movies/music to a device correct?
yup, that is kind of the best bit of xbmc, means you can store your movies on a central server and access them on multiple devices throughout your house. Mind you the awesome plugins that stream from external sources is a very close second.

I use XBMC as my main media centre in my house, usually I use androids and iphones as the remote controls for my TV with XBMC running on it, this way is a bit around the wrong way but I can see it being awesome for things like the nexus Q and TV's with embedded android who can suddenly grow full featured media centres

Stream with Plex!

Bare wit me I'm tired and going to bed in a few min. I started playing with chrome extensions and turns out Plex works pretty great.
Heres what you do in a nutshell. if you use plex already skip this.
1. download install plex media server and set it up using folders with your videos to add to the que.
2. the above might just work with Myplex.com but I have both. So get a my plex account and link your plex server/files to it.
3. install the plex chrome extension.
4. go to myplex account and your library. que up a video and start playing, cast it to chrome then hit full screen on the plex player. your audio and video will automatically size and cast to the tv. how awesome is that?

no it won't work over tablet as of now. really the op is only making people aware that it is possible to stream all your local content regardless of codec through the browser. then it's just casting that tab, it works alright but is nowhere near flawless and the limit is 720p.
i am really really hoping that it gets integrated to the app itself, but it doesn't seem to be a top priority for the devs. i do think they will get around to it eventually though.
I just read a report this morning that the Plex devs are optimistic that they're app will provide support soon.

I read the same thing and it appears they are only saying that due to a tweet from last week that they had ordered some. In the plex forums the only thing that a developer has said is that they won't start working on it until they have their devices. i do expect them to add the functionality, but i doubt it will be in the next few weeks. they generally aren't the quickest at adding new features.

Yeah, good to know. I'm still hoping that the developer of MX player decides to update the app. That would solve all local streaming issues. Just connect to LAN on ES File Explorer and then stream the video using MX Player.
I emailed the dev from mxplayer and they said a new app would need to be made. Apparently the app can't support both the chrome and android sdk. I'm not sure how accurate that is maybe they have to look into it a bit more. I think there is some confusion since the sdk for the chromecast is chrome sdk not android.

As was said, tablet apps are different, this is glorified mirroring. it's not perfect. it's more or less a proof of concept. I'm sure if you messed with buffer rate it would probably speed things up a lot. I was up all night and just kind of knocked off my seat when I saw audio reencode on the fly. What's kind of crazy is the plex plugin seems to figure out what you want and tries to do it for you. I don't see how the plugin is resizing when you hit full screen mode It's like it's interfacing with chromecast. Like for example if you try to play a avi by dragging it into chrome you get no audio but if you kick it into plex the audio gets turned off on the pc and put to the tv. I think plex guys should have this golden in a short time. as a fairly long time plex user. almost 2 years on roku. they rarely announce their Dev stuff they just one day release it.

just start casting then hit fullscreen video
when video is fullscreen alt+tab is handy to set tab focus to desktop if you want to continue using your PC for something else(windows key)

CheapCast in Google Play Store

https://plus.google.com/107130354111162483072/posts/bc1TZChjhRE
Installed it on my NeoTV Prime and it works great with YouTube videos cast from my Samsung Galaxy S3.
EDIT: Well egg on my face. Seems it was not CheapCast that was sending YouTube to my NeoTV Prime. YouTube will cast to my NeoTV Prime without CheapCast even installed. If anyone has Netflix and NeoTV Prime could you confirm this as working for you?
EDIT. The new update to CheapCast will not run on NeoTV Prime. Causes Force Close.
Waiting on Chrome Tab support now.
EDIT. Chrome can see any device that I have CheapCast running on (Galaxy Tab 2.7 and MK802IIIs) and both respond to a Cast from Chrome but nothing plays and Chrome errors out shortly. Both the Tab and MK802IIIs are running the updated CheapCast.
EDIT. I can cast YouTube video from my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.7 to my MK802IIIs most of the time. Sometimes complains about taking too long to play but for the most part works OK>

Emulate a chromecast on other android devices.
Since it's beta I figure you want feedback. Here is my setup: Source: Galaxy Note 2. Server: Galaxy Tab 10.1
I started sending a YouTube video. It started but after 20 seconds I got a continual spinning circle on both the source and server.
So, I shut down the server app on the tablet by pressing the stop server button. However, even though it was shutdown on the tablet it would play that 20 seconds of YouTube over and over again. I couldn't figure out where it was playing. It didn't show up in the app, it didn't show up in the YouTube app, nowhere. I could just hear that video playing in the background. I finally reboot the tablet to stop it.
Don't mean to be an ass, but what's the point of this? Do we really need to use our phones as a "remote control" for our tablets?

Think it through. Most of us have an extra, old Android phone laying around. Just buy a $5 MHL cable and connect to your TV. Now you have a Chromecast for $5. If nothing else, it will hold you over until Amazon gets them back in stock.

It depends on your usage scenario.
For instance, I have an old Android phone plugged into the aux input on a stereo, which I use to stream music. The phone is less-than-accessible, so it'd be great to be able to control it remotely from my phone.
In my living room, I have an old Google TV (The Revue), which Google isn't going to be adding support for casting to. Being able to queue up music and such from my phone would be nice, but what will be nicer is when apps that don't have Google TV versions add Chromecast support. HBO Go, for instance. I think that's the place this helps the most, allowing you to use phone/tablet media apps on older Google TV devices, and some backwards compatibility scenarios (Imagine HBO Go only supports Jellybean, and your tablet can only run Ice Cream Sandwich).
Imagine having this app on something like a Kindle Fire, where it might allow you to stream media from an application that's unavailable in your sandbox (which is really the same situation as Google TV and outdated versions of Android).
Also, considering Chromecast can be added to iOS, imagine there are apps available only for iOS that support Chromecast. You could use this to get whatever they provide onto an Android device. Essentially, it's useful in a number of various situations where (1) the target device doesn't support something your phone does (2) the target device is less accessible than your phone is (3) the target device is more visible than your phone is.
Heck, it's even somewhat useful to be able to send media to a tablet without having to pick the tablet up. I have a Nexus 7 sitting in a stand, plugged into the charging cable, paired with some Bluetooth headphones. The charging cable on the Nexus 7 is very, very short, so I have to unplug the device every time I pick it up. So, there's some small convenience to be had even in the phone-to-tablet scenario.

EXACTLY! I only got one Chromecast before they were sold out. But I have an Android stick/dongle on the other TV. By turning that on, I can cast to it OR the Chromecast on the other TV. Can't wait to try it!
I am curious if this emulator is hindered by the same API restrictions as the actual Chrome Cast? If not, that would make this very interesting.
I am guessing it will probably be hindered instead by lack of proprietary binaries... Netflix and so on. It should be easy to support non-Google-approved features like what Koush has been working on, though.

In my opinion the nice thing would be to have the ability to cast content instead of stream content.
What I mean is that aside from sending a movie from our phone/tablet/computer to the "cheapcasted device" (streaming), it would be nice to open a movie on netflix/youtube/vimeo/ on our phone/tablet/computer and tell the "cheapcasted device" tablet to download it directly from the servers of the video site (without needing to stream anything from one device to another)
Can anyone confirm whether Cheapcast used UDP multicast to identify it on a network? I have an Asus tf700 that doesn't show up on my main router(linksys e4200v2). Ifi connect to my secondary router I can see it if my phone is on the same 2nd router. Chromecast works fine on my primary router and is visible from both devices. It is only visible from devices on my secondary device if it is directly hooked up to the 2nd device.
Do note my primary router works as the dhcp server while the second one is a reapeter bridge.

Unless I am totally confused my your post you have it backwards. When you cast something, for example you are in Youtube, select a video then cast it to Chromecast (or CheapCast) your phone is just telling the device to stream it from the Internet. You phone is basically done at that point. Once the SDK is offical there will be apps that allow you to cast a local video in which Chromecast (CheapCast) will stream it from your phone...

rPlay for iOS - a ChromeCast receiver submitted to Apple Store

This app is now available in Apple Store:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/rplay/id692511073?ls=1&mt=8
I submitted an app to Apple store, called rPlay, which does Chromecast emulation. The app is being reviewed right now. Here is the description:
"rPlay tunrs your iPhone/iPad/iPod into a chromecast device, so you can stream music and video from another device using chromecast enabled apps, such as YouTube and Google Music, etc. You can in turn stream from your iOS device to your Apple TV, this way, you can stream chromecast media to your Apple TV."
I hope Apple can approve this FREE app.
It supports YouTube/GoogleMusic/Custom Apps, chrome tab browsing is not there yet due to the lack of features in Safari browser.
This is a YouTube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4urxecUbAk
Some screenshots are attached:
We will also release a Windows and Android version soon. On non-iOS platforms, rPlay is much more than ChromeCast, it also has AirPlay/AirPlay Mirroring, and upcomping Miracast emulation, etc.
Some screenshots for the Windows version, will be freely available, most likely next week or two.
Windows version supports AirPlay Mirroring, ChromeCast (YouTube/Google Music/Browser Tab mirroring/Custom Apps), etc.
Can't wait. Sounds awesome!!

This is not easy, unless netflix app is available on that platform, and assuming it takes the same parameters as the netflix version on the real chromecast device. We will definitely give it a try.

Check out the Chromecast description, not all videos will cast, and that makes sense.
Amctv.com videos aren't in a format that the native Chromecast player understands.
Tab casting

Why didn't your post the playstore links?
Tried the app, couldn't cast anything (hoped for entire tab casting, later saw it should allow only casting various videos on various webpages).
Maybe it works and would appeal to some but it's not really intuitive..

Thank you. Tab casting is cool idea, but it will drain the phone battery just like screen mirroring (Miracast). Let's see if we can make that happen with Chromecast.
Added the links to Play store as well.
How long did it take to implement this?

About a month initially with the Chromecast "preview" SDK and then a week to update it after the final SDK was released. It took longer because we didn't use the Cast SDK's companion library. We didn't like the default look and feel of Google's remote control buttons all squished up in one corner of the screen. Hope it helps.
...and with the latest update of vGet and its unusually high cost, this browser looks like a sweet deal. I might give it a better test this time around
Maybe this would be a good community to post a beta on for a version that supports 4.4

Split Browser 2.9.2 (and trial 2.4.2) support Chromecast on Android 4.4 devices. Please give it a try and let us know!
Dude, this needs a lot of work. It is pretty much unusable

10 minute trial = license patch
Sweet but 10 minutes champ? That wasn't long enough to get me past stealing it to buying it .
