[Q] Back on XDA, but now a newbie again-need help - Galaxy S 4 Active Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
Wow, XDA has changed - use to come here when I had my HTC Touch Pro- now back, after Iphone - with a S4 Active GT I9295 and a newbie again.
I would like to be able to delete all the bloat ware that is on the phone, make some tweaks to increase battery life and improve the phone, and maybe in the future install custom roms (ones I've done some serious catching up) but I'm completely new to Android and all it's associated wonders
Could somebody be so kind to point me in the direction of some " newbie info" on the terminology - which root to use - which apps are bloat - which are not, etc, etc, etc.
In the old days XDA was always a great source of info and help and hoping that it still is.
Thanks in advance to everybody who can help me on my way

HELP!! Regards Roms etc.....

Hey guys, please help before my brain fries completely.
I've recently downloaded the Diamond Project ROM, which I love, although have just noticed this is quite old so wondered what the best new ones are??
However, reading the ROM development page has completely confused me as they are all on about different versions of this and that, different windows mobile version....................... its all greek to me. Escpecially with the 50+ pages about bugs and fixes etc........ lol
Can anyone help?
ps - I am in England and on O2 if this helps?
Try Shaks v4.10. No bugs (at least for me) very stable and very fast, lots of new things included.
Very good support in case there is something wrong.
You might need to get comfortable with the new notifications manager but it's great once you got to know it

newbie question

hi everybody with good mood
i'm new to this forum, new owner of D2....
is here anybody, who will advice me how to tweak my WM?
- touch3d somehow doesn't offer too much user comfort
- colours are too sad
- there are no shortcuts for favourite contact (i would prefer 9x9 matrix)
- facebook missing
- is there possibility to have actual info about currency trade market? (i can see only stocks)
- etc.
i'm really new and i believe, that many of those features i've written is available, but i don't know how to achieve it..
also, I would appreciate some list of apps, which you prefer to install (which are usefull or/and can make fun)
i've read few contributions from this forum.. but i'm lost
what is ROM? Radio? is it safe to change the ROM?
thanks for any tip in advance..
and please stay in good mood

Well, let's see what we can do for you.
Firstly there is a rich mine here of information about all your queries and the way to find the answers is to first and foremost use the search function.
I know it can be a chore and easier to just ask in a genera way, but, members get somewhat weary of answering the same questions over and over again.
Read everything you can and then re-read. It really will pay dividends in the long run.
You will become an established knowledgeable member in your own right and earn respect from other members.
Now on to some of your issues.
My TD2 is (was!) T-mobile branded and out of the box it's a pile of s**t!
Having got that out of the way, I have over 9 years experience with wince (yes the core OS is still wince) and over the last 3 years I have come to know that whatever HTC devices are capable off will be attained by the great work of the more senior and knowledgeable members here.
Leave it to the network carriers and it will never happen or if it does it will be way down the line.
So, you will have to look for a stable cooked ROM that will be tweaked to the balls and really show what the TD2 can do. For that you need to know all about flashing and in the correct manner. Learn about SPL and HSPL and the different versions and what they are for. Read other comments and reviews and then try different ROMs with different radio ROMs. The performance will be enhanced and the device will become more usable
ROMs are the OS (operating system) packages that are flashed to the permanent non volatile memory area of the phone. Radio ROMs are the additional packages that are flashed either along with or separate to the main OS ROM. (to do the latter you need to understand HSPL and SPL). They provide the GPS, WiFi and phone funcionality. A good one will improved operational sensitivity.
If you can progress to that level of understanding then all your other queries will be answered by the knowledge accumulated along the way.
If you get to a brick wall with anything by all means ask. There will be someone who can help, but, use the search first!
Welcome aboard.
believe me or not, you helped me more, than you thought..
I just needed to know the correct keywords..
one more time, thank you

[Q] What's Next?

Well I got my Captivate today and immediately I was put off by all the "bloatware" so I looked for an easy way to root my phone and get rid of all the AT&T stuff. Well easy because I don't have much experience with ROM's or rooting at all. The most I've ever done was create a gold card for my old HTC tattoo.
So I went ahead and used Unleash the Beast V0.2 to root my phone. Now it's working great and runs really smooth with just a little occasional lag.
My question is though, is there anything else I can do to optimize my phone? It's still stock ROM. Should I flash a new ROM on my phone? I want to her your guy's opinions and experiences. Thank you.
Well to start you off I would say read read read then read some more. There is tons of info on the boards here but you just have to read a bit to find it.
Head over to the dev section and start with the sticky's and go from there.
Just to give you a little taste and help clear up that lag for you.
Voodoo lagfix.

Any advice on where to start if interested in ROM Development?

Although I appreciate the work that the developers have put into their GTab 8.9 ROMs, I am a little disappointed in the lack of selction to choose from.
Lets just say I was interested in trying this myself...
Where would I begin?
Do you need to know a lot of coding to do this? (I am a mechanical engineer by training, but have a great deal of computer know-how.)
I don't have massive amounts of free time available (I have 2 kids aged 2 and 4), so family time occupies the majority of my time.
This is probably never going to happen, but I was just wondering what was involved in doing this work.
Thanks in advance!
PS: I am a Mac user - not sure if this hinders me or not, but I can dual boot into windows 7 when needed.
just a noob answer..
first.. What kind of interest you choose?
If you choose performance or overclocking you can start from kernel development..
You need windows or linux/unix Environment to do that..
If you want to build the ROM from the start, you can choose AOSP,ask developer if you want to help them..
Or maybe you can start from Odex and deodex stock ROM, zipalining, tweaking some buildprop, theming with framework..
Most of the tools for that is build for Linux and Windows, i dont know for MAC user..
Hope this help a little for you..
Edit: by the way this not QA section, you post in wrong section Moderator will move this..
