[Q] GsmInboundSmsHandler Killing Battery - Moto X Q&A

I have a T-Mobile Moto X running 4.4 with an unlocked bootloader and TWRP installed with ART. Today, while taking exams, I felt my phone getting really hot in my pocket and after exams were done, I checked my battery usage to find that Android OS, which normally takes up about 15~25 percent of my battery, was taking up 41% of my battery. I also checked Wakelock Detector, which revealed that "GsmInboundSmsHandler" kept my phone awake for over 3 hours. I searched this up on Google, which only revealed some code, and then I searched it up on xda, which revealed that it had something to do with my voice mail. This makes sense as somebody called me and left me a voice mail, but I checked my voice mail and deleted it right before taking my exam, so the voice mail was only there for about half an hour while the problem persisted for over 3 hours. Also, I placed 2 calls that lasted about a minute long after my exams, and somehow, that combined with my call to voice mail drained 23% of my battery.
Any light on this situation would be greatly appreciated.

If someone could report this to Moto... It doesn't seem like a widespread issue as Google brings up nothing.

Do you use tmobile visual voice mail or other tmobile app?
I used to have that too, but after uninstall it, you'll be fine. Don't know if greenify will work or not, but I figured I don't really need tmobile's app.

For me it happens even without any visual voicemail apps. What truly impressed me is that even with this wakelock, I was still able to get around 20hrs with around 4.5 hours of screen time.

Did this happen allot of times? One time? Sometimes things just get stuck. Reboot, fixed.
Sent from my XT1058 using Tapatalk

The problem seems to have gone away and no, I do not have the visual voicemail installed. I was just hoping that somebody could give advice on how to prevent this in the future, but I think a reboot would have worked.

I'm running the TMO kangkat ROM on Bell. I get this wakelock after I receive a SMS quite often. Not sure how to prevent it. Don't see any TMO apps anywhere.
Sent from my XT1053 using Tapatalk

I too am getting this wakelock. I can reproduce it by calling my phone and leaving a voicemail. Thus far the only way I have been able to get rid of it is to check voice mail to clear the indicator and the reboot.
I should note this is on AT&T using a developer edition phone. Kit Kat was installed via an OTA. Phone is rooted via TWRP method but is otherwise stock.

FYI. I switched from ART to dalvik today to install xposed and the wakelock still occurs when I get voicemail. So it's not an ART problem. I tried clearing cache and dalvik cache again and no luck either. Switching default sms app didn't have an effect.

It looks like the update to 4.4.2 has fixed this issue for me. Made a call to my phone. Left voicemail and no wakelock this time.

I have same problem. Did anyone find a solution?

Same problem here. Did anyone find a proper solution? gsminboundsmshandler ist preventing my Moto G (KK 4.4.4) from going into deep sleep mode.

Why is Voicemail keeping my phone awake so much?

I'm a bit confused here...I use GSam Battery Monitor to keep track of everything b/c I'm anal about whats running on my phone and lately, if i check "Time held awake", voicemail is number one...like today...2h 59m and the phone has only been off the charger for about 7 hours....does that make any sense??
Voicemail is in the top 3 of power used at 12.9%...If i check "number of times waking device", voicemail is nowhere to be found in that list...
So is this normal or is something crazy going on?
Wakelock Detail:
starting cm_vnote service 1h 31m
cm message wakeup 1h 29m
18 wakelocks.
Is this a visual voicemail app that came preinstalled? If so, disable it assuming you're on Android 4.0 or above).

Mine has been awake since I unplugged. I would guess the reason were not seeing the times waking the device is because it's not waking it, it is holding it awake.
I'm on vipers newest, and this did not start until I switched to his newest. But I am always deleting useless apps, I wondervif your are doing the same?

Why not just use Google voice? When you set it up it will disable the Visual voicemail app.
Or you can just freeze it and I'm wondering if you can use the pm disable command to disable it

Notification delay issue?

I have a delayed notification issue on my device. Whether I'm on stock version or using ARHD, the issue is still there. Even I used an app called push notification fixer, it still can't help. So anyone can help me pls??
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
I'm also having this problem, I've already tried the AT&T version and the US unlocked version, on stock software and ARHD. It happens with all of them. Power saver is off, phone set to keep data connection even when screen is off.
So far I've noticed that Whatsapp, Gmail, and Google Voice are affected. I wake up in the morning and have to go to each app and refresh to get my messages, and sometimes even during the day I get the notifications hours late.
It's driving me nuts and ruining an otherwise fantastic phone!! I'm surprised there's not that much talk about this on the forums.....Any ideas?
Notifiction Delay only using data
first of all, i have a HTC One (available to use on all networks) with delayed notifications whilst the phone is sleeping, ofcourse ive searched and selected all the correct settings but unfortunately i still get delays.
However, this problem only occurs whilst using the data package, i dont get this problem on wifi even if the phone has been sleeping for hours, the problem is only whilst using the data provided by etisalat. (the data works fine whilst using the phone, but when the screen turns off it just seems disabled) Ive tried multiple sim cards, still the same problem.
I contacted HTC, i hard resetted my phone and adjusted the necessary settings i was instructed to, but no use, they told me to send my phone for repair using the warrantee, the repair shop said it was a feature of the phone and ALL HTC ONE PHONES HAVE THIS PROBLEM, i then emailed and complained to HTC customer support and they agreed with the technician saying it was a permanant battery saving feauture and a new device would not be sent to me,
so, is this true? does everyone experience this issue?
I found an app 'Push Notification Fixer' , it requires rooting the phone , do you think it will solve my problem?
any help on how to proceed would be much appreciated,
thank you
Problem solved. U can download an app called Push Notifications Fixer. Use this app and everything should be fine. Btw change of firmware also solves this most probably, not confirmed.

[Q] Motorola assist wakelock

So I've been using and enjoying Motorola assist since I got this phone. Recently, however, it's running constantly in the background and absolutely killing my battery and making the phone run hot. The only remedy is to disable it altogether. Is anyone else experiencing this?
Yes, I'm experiencing the same starting today. I, too, had to disable the app because nothing else worked. There are a couple Play Store reviews saying the same, so this is definitely happening to a number of people, but I haven't found anything more detailed yet.

This just happened to me today. Dropped me to 20% battery by lunch when I noticed, with Assist eating 41% of the battery. Haven't had time to troubleshoot it myself, but I shut it down as well.

Appreciate the responses. It literally just started happening today, but as far as I can tell there have been no new updates to Assist since 12/19, so I'm totally at a loss for why it's not closing properly. I really like using it. I've reported the issue to Motorola, so hopefully it gets addressed soon.
Moto Assist went nuts last night on both of my Moto X's. One running 4.4 retail, one running 4.2.2 Rogers. I can only guess it has a bug with the new year or something. It killed the battery on both of my phones, this is the first problem I have had with it.
I am only using the sleeping feature. Even after a reboot it is still killing the battery, I have had to force stop it.
I am thinking there will be a lot of people with a dead Moto X on a pretty important night tonight.
I just began having problems with it last night as well. Kept my phone awake 51% of the time and woke my phone up some 6000 times according to Wakelock Detector. Eager to see how soon Moto comes out with a fix. Pretty nice to see them responding to some of the Play store reviews (not any regarding this bug so far though).
Make it a user app and greenify? I've never used it.... But just throwing this out there.

Sleeping mode is causing the issue. I just talked to a friend with a Moto X who only uses driving mode in Assist and he isn't having the issue. Just tested it on my end (I normally have all 3 enabled) and keeping the driving and meeting modes active while turning off sleeping mode resolves the issue. I suspect it's date-related.
Hey guys, I started having this problem today. The "top" function in Elixer2 shows "Motorola Assist" and "Settings Storage" both using 18% and 33% CPU, respectively. My phone is also very warm and the battery is draining fast.
I disabled Sleep Mode within Motorola Assist, and force-stopped the service (as well as Settings Storage) and the problem seems to have subsided.
That's quite interesting about it being related to the date!
Glad I froze it on day one. Lol

Wow... I'll have to try disabling sleep mode. I don't really use it that much. I do use driving mode since I commute frequently.

Moto assist
If you go to the time setting and set the date for January 2nd 2014 you will see that assist starts working again. When I set it back to today's date it's a no go, so Io bet after tomorrow it will be fine.

Jan 2nd 2014?
Yeah, I noticed last night that Sleep mode didn't work at all. Even tried removing updates, clearing data, and re-downloading the update.
I re-enabled it after my clock went to Jan 1 2014 and it has been fine on both 4.2.2 and 4.4.
Yeah, working fine here but I had to disable and re-enable it today.
So weird... Glad to hear it was a simple issue to work around.

Mine does/did the same thing. Never figured out what it was. Now it is up for sell and I am using my newer HTC One. I think it might be the power saver but never got around to testing it. In PS mode it is supposed to turn data off when the phone is sleeping.

messing around with the settings and found it has something to do with the lock screen security. When its set to "none" the notifications works fine. I have tried a couple of the apps for screen locks and are not satisfied with them as far as thier looks. I am really hoping when ATT finally released the kit kat update it will fix this problem. I just sold my LG G2 to get this phone. Kinda disappointed now that ATT released its update today.
I used to have the HTC one but didnt like not having the sd card. I found I like the bigger screens.
Did you finally figure out the solution? I am completely stock, not rooted and have the same issue since last 6 months. I never had any lock screen, so thats not the issue, I always have my phone unlocked.
The problem is not app specific. The delay in notification happens all across the board. When my phone is sleeping, i dont get any notification. As soon as I wake it up, all notification come at the same time, including Yahoo mail, Gmail, hangout messages, whatsapp, Google voice, twitter and others.
It seems like the wifi/data is disabled when phone is sleeping. I double checked in the Advanced Wifi option that wifi is always on. Some people said that the push notification heartbeat might be the issue but why only few of us are seeing this issue and not everyone?
Anyone have any solution?
I have always had my Note 3 on PIN, and I always wake up to at least 2 or 3 emails (sometimes many more), and at least 2 or 3 days I wake up to a new text (I don't text people normally, but Amazon texts me to let me know an order has shipped, etc.)
So it's not the email or text app and it's not the lock screen "as a rule on all devices". It could be a few different things, like allowing wifi to be turned off when the screen is off (that saves so little battery it doesn't make any practical difference - turn it off and keep wifi on all the time). I don't normally run with 3G/4G on, but that shouldn't turn off during sleep, so it wouldn't cause the problem.

[Q] SMS delay problem

Hello guys
i just got a LG L90 a few days ago from T-Mobile
But I suspect there is some SMS delay problems with it
somehow i don't get sms for maybe hours,
and suddenly sms just come popping all up at around the same time
I tried with a few friends. some got it normal but one got my sms 2-3 hours late!
However there are times it work just fine with everyone though
Wondering if any has met the same problem and if there is. Have you figured out a solution for this?
I have contacted T-mobile just now and hopefully the assistants clearing cache method will work for me
No you are not the only one, I too have the same problems (although not as extreme).
As for a fix, luckily with KitKat we can choose a default messaging app and I recommend chompSMS or Textra, they seem to eliminate those pesky delay problems, but although it works for me, I can't guarantee it will work for you.

Yeah, I've switch to Google hangout, still a delay :crying:
And also my device suddenly wouldn't charge earlier, i had to disconnect and reconnect 4-5 times before it charges
using Google chrome also keep killing background tasks, keyboard wouldn't show up, screen dimmer keeps getting killed
even the whole UI blank out sometimes and I'm forced to restart
I think I should try flashing a custom ROM? would it be something about the custom one? i don't have much apps installed, problems shouldn't be due to a lack of RAM...
Anyone can help?
There are a few Roms available, check out @Quarxs one about cm 11

Did you ever resolve your texts not going through? We have an L90 bought from tmobile prepaid but activated with ultra mobile. Sometimes go to send a text and it just says sending and doesn't go through. At this same time I tried to send a text to that phone and it wasn't received. Rebooted the phone and the messages started going through. Using stock messaging app. I haven't tried a different app. It's my daughters phone and she doesn't deal well with changing the apps around so I want to avoid it if possible.
