Hi, I'm new to the whole "smartphone world", and haven't decided if I should go for the Z1. What I'd like to know is if the 3 buttons at the bottom of the screen (Home, back and i don't know what the other does) can be set to accomplish another task and/or are customizable (the icons I mean).
Thanks.

No, in stock rom you can't but if you root or flash a custom rom they can be modded like you like.

In the new Android 4.3 (stock) you can download themes from store made for our Xperia Z1 and the Xperia Z Ultra, Each theme changes the iconsof the 3 buttons.

I don't need a lot of added functions, but I would love the ability to go "back a level in menus"
Maybe its I am new but can find no reference to the ability.

Not sure if you are running stock or some other mod, if you are rooted you can get the Button Savior app or Softkeys app. both present the standard android keys on the screen for you to use.
I will take a look at softkeys.

I ended up using Button Savior, because its got the option of having the button displayed permanently (unless you "x" it out).
You can swipe to the left on the taskbar to go back.
Sup,
When you longpress the Home button you can swipe it up to the Google Now.
I don't really like this Google Now. It would be way better if you could start any App via Home button. i.e Camera.
So does anyone know of a fix/hack/mod to change Google now ?

and i don think on stock rom maybe u can change it by custom rom like CM
check feature of CM10.1 for xperia Z
http://www.xperiablog.net/2013/03/05/cyanogenmod-10-1-now-available-for-xperia-z/
You're right. But Longpress also works ^^
Ah well, I'll wait for official 4.2 and switch toa custom ROM then.
Hey @Haldi4803
I suggest you take a look at the excellent Slide Launcher which allows for launching multiple custom actions, including camera app, quicktext a contact, etc.
If all you want is launch a single app, no question asked, you may use Home Button Launcher
that looks awesome! Thx dude!
Hi,
Not sure if this is bug or not, but all the icons on the Xperia Z are only touch responsive if you press on the upper left corner of the icon. (except for the back, home, task keys)
If you press it like you normally do (in the middle) it will show you the animation that it's pressed-in but will not do anything else.
And press-hold on the icon will jump to the add home screen pane.
I'm on the latest firmware build .434, the only way I could fix this; is to reinstall to its original state via SUES.
Anyone else experiencing this, or know more about this problem?
Thanks in advance.

Solution: Go to settings > Developer Options > Enable all three Animation Scales.. Reboot.
This is a bug in Xperia Z launcher. I myself found this solution
#love this launcher on my Xperia Arc.
Sent from my Xperia Arc using xda app-developers app

Thanks lovemyarc for your answer!
Yes, indeed I did disable all the animation scales!
Because I didn't needed them, thougth it might speed up 0.01%
Anyway since restoring I haven't disabled those functions and the bug hasn't occured anymore. :fingers-crossed:
Cheers!

Try using GMD Autohide Softkey
=)
The Hybrid rom has a softkey toggle within the power menu. which hides it there and then, so is pretty useful.
You can also use this app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1497558
requires a reboot though, works on the T, I've used it
Hi,
is there a possibility to change the back function on the display? Tried Custom Navigation Bar, but it says it is incompatible to this device because there is no next button in the compatibility test. Just want to mirror it because I am used to find "back" on the left side from my previous Xperia phones...
Maybe someone has an idea to this.
