[Q] Sort some things out (HTC One) - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey xda,
I kind of feel like needing help understanding my situation. Normally I read a lot and understand all this stuff around modding quite ok, but I'm at a point with too many grey zones of half-understanding, I guess.
So I have an HTC ONE, bought in germany half a year ago, with Sense and all that HTC-branding. When the google edition came out, it was easy installing a custom recovery and a vanilla JB google rom (I'm not quite sure today why I did it, but I also flashed HBOOT to 1.54). There was no need thinking about s-off (I'm still s-on) and RUUs. Even OTAs worked seamless.
Then came the OTA for 4.4, I hit update and got stuck in a bootloop. Finding out that it was cwmr took me a while.. I began reading and realized that I would need s-off to install the OTAs. Here's my first question: Why? What changed that I can't install it via custom recovery like before?
And is it just a matter of time, until there's a flashable version of vanilla kitkat?
Now I'm running OneDroid by ssrij, which doesn't requires s-off - why doesn't this one need s-off, but most of the others do?
Any words for clarification would be really appreciated!

I would forget about the why and just get busy getting rumrunner to work to get s-off. just flash a stock rooted 4.3 rom and use rumrunner.
also make sure your on TWRP 2.6.3.3 before flashing any of the kitkat roms
this is as close to pure android as I could find
HTC One Nexus Edition 2.0

luckily I'm still happy with onedroid rom, so no need for further experiments
but the why is bothering me nonetheless. especially: is it just a matter of time (like something official isn't published yet) till there's a s-on flashable vanilla kitkat?

[Q] Trying to install the 4.3 OTA to a stock rom, stock recovery, but having issues

Hello all,
Firstly, I've got a (still unlocked) U.S. dev edition with S-On and Hboot 1.44.0000. I've been trying to install yesterday's OTA, but I can't seem to do it. The only changes I've made to my One since I got it were rooting it and installing TWRP in order to flash the MoDaCo toolkit. I understand that the stock recovery is needed to flash OTAs, and so I used fastboot to flash the stock recovery, but when I try to install the update, the progress bar in the recovery goes about 1/4 of the way and then it stops and displays the red triangle with exclamation mark. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, honestly.
I've seen varying advice aimed at other people also having difficulty suggesting I need to relock the bootloader (though as a dev edition, it was never locked, right?) or to get S-Off and then flash it somehow, so I'm not entirely sure what to do. I'd rather not resort to using a RUU as I will lose all of my data.
I didn't think a developer edition phone would be this difficult to deal with, as I've never had any problems flashing countless ROMs, kernels, etc with other android devices. I've never had an HTC phone though, so I've got no experience with S-On/Off, and to be honest I still don't understand what it is.
Anyway, how should I proceed? Thank you.

Thank you for that, but I mentioned that I didn't want to use RUUs. There has to be a way to do this without losing my data.
1) Put your phone in s-off now that you have the 1.44 hboot, trust me is better for you.
2) Maybe you have a custom kernel.
For install OTA you need stock rom, stock recovery and stock kernel.
3) Maybe more info can help us

I'm having the exact same issues. I'm on HBOOT 1.44, S-On (I'd love to get S-Off, but revone keeps giving me error code -1...), and previously got the OTA's to work by flashing stock recovery, running the OTA, then reflashing TWRP. This one doesn't seem to work that way, though. If you figure anything out, or find the right stock recovery, please do share!

Hboot 1.44, ROM 4.3, Firmware is ??? What do I need to do?

Sorry for making one of these but I can't find the answer to my specific situation so I'm asking for some guidance: I'm S-ON btw
When 4.3 came out, I just wiped and flashed a custom 4.3 Rom like normal not realizing that I would need the whole new firmware to be fully functional. I can't delete system apps and xpsosed installer will never stick past a reboot and other misc stuff.
Then I tried flashing the new firmware over the top of the custom 4.3 ROM. But I kept getting a ERROR 99 or something, couldn't get it to work and gave up.
Now I'm on bad boys 4.3 rom and I have no idea what firmware I'm on cause I don't see it listed anywhere in the Rom.
Now from what I've read, it's advisable to be S-OFF for all future stuff so, what steps do I need to follow in order to gain S-OFF, completely update my phone to the new 4.3 firmware, radio etc... then be able to flash a 4.3 rom and then carry on with my usual root shenanigans like normal?
I have the 1.44 hboot (May 8) so if I read correctly, there is a way. I just need all the steps laid out in front of me cause I can't figure this one out.

Ok thank you. So then at the end of those steps when I have achieved S-OFF, what's the next step? Cause won't I still be on old firmware?

Yes once you get s-off you can flash the firmware manually.

[Q] HTC One w ARHD12 - how to get Three's 4G update?

OK, so about 9 months ago I rooted my Three branded HTC one, installed CWM recovery and put ARHD12 on there and it's been brilliant. Three are now rolling out the 4G radio updates which as far as I understand is entirely separate to any ROM such as ARHD. So how do I get the radio update? Do I have to go back to stock? If so, now's the time to confess I didn't take a backup before I installed ARHD. So I guess I need the most recent Three RUU - do I have to remove CWM before I install it? I'm not a n00b - I managed to do this on my own last time and I'm fairly technically competent. The only problem I have now is one of time - I can't spend an entire day figuring stuff out due to the 9-month old bundle of joy that requires a fair bit of attention! If you can help me with a fairly simple outline of what to do in what order, that would be very much appreciated. Cheers!

You will have to return completely to stock. That means everything must be as it was out of the box. As for the ruu for your carrier, if they released it then it should be in one of the stickies.

I'm on Three in the UK and before I flashed a custom ROM I made sure I got S-Off then flashed the latest unbranded firmware(FUU_4.19.401.9-TWRP2633_combined_nowipe.exe which I got from XDA) and then changed my CID to SuperCID. After that I flashed custom ROM without flashing a stock ROM. LTE/4G works perfectly ok.

Thanks Heat57. I'm currently S-On, Unlocked, Tampered. I've also found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2419699
which seems to contain all of the radio files in the world, and also all of the firmware. This radio:
(1.29.401.12 WWE OTA) Radio_4A.14.3250.13_10.33.1150.01L
Looks interested, but you say you never flashed your radio? When did you get your one?
I'm thinking from your post I'm going to get S-OFF (using Revone, yes?) and flash a firmware to see if the 4G radio options show up. I can't see the one you mentioned - could you recommend one from the above thread? Also, it says TWRP - I'm using CWM - is that a problem?
Final question - if I do a backup I'm backing up the radio and firmware as well? So if I make a total plums of this I can get back to CWM and restore?
TIA for any further help you can give me

Well, I flashed the firmware, which amongst other hardware bits includes the radio. My first goal was to unlock the bootloader and then S-Off, as the latter removes any potential issues with firmware flashes and the like. I also went and changed CID to 11111111, which I understand is SuperCID and enables flashing of firmware and ROMs of different CID designations. Please beware, YOU MUST BE S-OFF FOR FIRMWARE FLASHING!!!
Regarding your question of revone, if you're on hboot 1.44 then yes, revone, hboot version 1.54 and 1.55 only work with rumrunner and latest versions require the 'firewater' exploit.
I am relatively new to HTC, although I owned an original Desire many years ago, so I still remember the peculiarities of HTC ROM. I had a Galaxy Note 2 and rooting and flashing ROMs there is a piece of cake by comparison. I digress.
Unlike most other manufacturers, where you get everything included in the custom ROM, it seems with HTC that is not the case, hence if you want to update your radio for example, you need to flash a firmware package. Therefore, I am not certain if a Nandroid would restore the firmware, if you encounter any problems, maybe someone more knowledgeable can confirm. In any event, if you're S-Off then flashing any firmware for the M7ul should work, so worst case, if you mess up you could always flash the one I pointed out via adb. Here is a link to the latest firmware http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2485651
Regarding the recovery, I just prefer TWRP and use the one but last version 2.6.3.4, which works perfectly. #However, there is no reason why your CWM should not be adequate. Before I took the jump, after just receiving my One, I read through the threads for about a day to make sure I got it right.
Finally, if you end up rooted and S-Off then there is a supper little flashable zip called 'Guru_Bootloade_Reset_1.0.zip' that allows you to remove the tampered flag, relock the bootloader and unlock it again by simply flashing it and selecting what you want in it's aroma installer. You'll find it on XDA as well, justuse the search function.

[Q] Finally got round to S-OFF but would like help with next steps please..

Hey all,
I am happy with all things rooting/flashing etc... been doing it for years. Problem is when i change my phone i usually go for a different make thus need to learn all new procedures. I rooted my HTC ONE with no issues, and i have been upgrading my TWRP with flashable zips.... Alas now i need to do more to get phone uptodate with firmwares etc...
Today i finally got round to S-OFF my phone (i am on 1.54 HBOOT) and all is good. I would like to upgrade the firmware and HBOOT to newer ones simply because i feel i need to now. Reason being - i am so many firmwares behind now the new ones have got to improve my phone (Some areas my reception is rubbish if not non existant!!). I need to update my TWRP to 2.7.1.x too as the new Viperone ROM wont install on 2.6.3.3...
So i was going to install https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1LQDLpVZYyUpXPgC2sh1BvAS9Oo8B-fTiZU_JhpIH-fU/pubhtml the latest file from here - 18.08.2014 6.09.401.5 http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23622183712458599
c650f37bde1ef869ed1218c23047fafb m7_ul TWRP 2.7.1.1 but i wanted to double check that im ok to do so and its the right file??? This i presume from what i have read will update the firmware/radio and latest TWRP with stock HBOOT of 1.57??
Can anyone just clarify if this is right please before i go ahead... If i should do the HBOOT/firmware/twrp all seperate thats fine... just wanted the advice first from more knowledgeable people!!! :good::good::good:
And... if it is right - should i reflash the ROM i am on after or as its a no-wipe it should boot ok??
Im really sorry if its a simple answer. but i just cant get a definitive one from all the threads i have read - plus some mention MID and CID which i was hoping i wouldnt have to touch really if i can help it...
Really do appreciate any help here... sorry for the long post...
ps i am currently running ViperONE 6.2.1 if that makes a difference..

[Q] S-off with rooted HTC One M7 - HBOOT 1.57 S-on

Hello!
I've decided I want to turn my HTC One (International version) into a Google Play edition. I've watched a bunch of videos, and went for it. Everything went fine until the step where I should get S-off. I've tried quite a few tools, but just get an error that my version is not going to get S-off.
I have seen people been able to work around using CM11, but from what I've understood, you need S-off to write anything to /boot, which is where I presume CM11 would be flashed. So, am I missing anything important? Is there a workaround if my phone has HBOOT 1.57, and not S-off already? I hope someone can help me!
TL;DR: My phone is unlocked and rooted, but I can't get S-off using any of the most popular tools. My HBOOT is version 1.57.
I hope someone smarter than me is able to help me! If you need more information, please leave a reply and I'll get all the information I'm able to.
In advance, thanks!
Kcdyb
No, you can flash cm11 with s-on. You have to have a custom recovery with which to do it, though. I don't know which tutorial you're using, but it should have a section where you flash the recovery after the bootloader is unlocked. If your bootloader is still locked, then... Are you rooted?
I'm pretty new to HTC, I just came off of samsung, and they seem straightforward and simple by comparison, but with s-off, it seems like there's more room for customization with HTC phones...
Anyway, I found that TWRP won't flash cm11, but Philz_touch will. If you're rooted, grab rashr off the play store and you can flash both of these recoveries right from your phone. I'd go with TWRP 2.6.3.0, though, since the latest didn't like my backups.
Then once those are installed, you boot into bootloader and volume down to Recovery and it'll pop up in a few seconds where you can take backups (<--DO THIS!) and flash new roms and kernels and such.

Have you tried Sunshine S-OFF, it will cost $25 but it is worth it. Once you get S-OFF you can change your CID & MID then flash the GPe RUU or ROM.
Thanks a lot for your replies!
I have actively tried figuring this out alongside reading for my exam today, and recently found and interesting option to work around S-on. My total goal is getting GPE Lollipop on my HTC, and I just now found a thread discussing using a backup from OPs phone. According to many users in the thread, they have been able to recover this backup and successfully run Lollipop with S-on. I did consider buying Sunshine, but due to finding the backup-option, I wanna try the free alternatives first. My goal is like I said running GPE, and I will most likely not install other roms on my phone.
My phone has an unlocked bootloader, custom recovery CWM v6.0.4.8, and my phone is rooted with SuperSU v2.37 at the moment. This might change some since I'm trying to recover a specific backup as my current tactic.
Your replies have definitely added to my understanding of the workarounds, and are much appreciated. If the backup-method don't work, I will try your methods!
PS: I posted in the backup-thread asking some questions. I'm posting my link here to string them both together in case someone else looks for an solution to the same problem I had.
