I picked up a Chromecast a couple of days ago but am having trouble with it and I can't find a decoder ring for the status LED. I don't see a Q&A form for this device or the info in the FAQ so I'm posting here.
Here's my issue: After initial setup/connection I was able to cast youtube/music/pandora just fine. I noticed that the status LED during that time was solid white. My assumption is that this is the status which the device should always be in. However in the morning (same thing 2 days now) I no longer get the cast icon in any of the apps, even though the chromecast app says that the device is "ready to cast". At this point the LED is blinking white. Does this mean disconnected from router? Unplugging/plugging the unit back in from power/HDMI fixed the problem but it just reoccurs the next morning. Any thoughts?
I'm using a Linksys E3000 router running Tomato 1.28 I believe. AP isolation is OFF.
Anyone have a full breakdown of the LED meanings?
Ps: i forgot to add that for a successful reconnect I have to unplug both power and HDMI, plug power back in until the LED goes solid white, and then plug HDMI back in. Just cycling power does not work.

Don't trust the status given in the Chromecast app - it has a tendency to be incorrect with respect to Ready to Cast, Needs Setup, etc. Always go by what Chromecast shows you on the TV screen.
Blinking white - Chromecast is not connected to a WiFi access point (this is also the state it goes into when it needs to be set up)
Solid white - Chromecast is connected to a WiFi access point (it may or may not have access to the Internet)
Solid Red - booting, or settings reset triggered (by holding button down)
As for your problem...
The first thing I'd try is using the HDMI Extender - that will reduce the amount of WiFi signal interference/blockage you get from your TV.
Check your router's (advanced) settings for any power-saving features. Some APs reduce signal strength when there's little/no WiFi activity, so it might be dropping the signal enough that Chromecast loses its connection.
Not sure why you have to unplug HDMI - you shouldn't, unless your TV is providing enough (or more than zero) power on the HDMI port to keep Chromecast alive or semi-alive. Does it show any light or attempt to light when you plug it into HDMI but don't have the power connected?
I already have the extender on. No power through the HDMI but it won't reconnect unless I unplug it. I have it powered externally and not via TV's USB port. Don't remember any energy saving features on the router but I'll take another look.
I get excellent reception during streaming so I don't know why it's disconnecting...

Well, I'm not sure what happened (maybe there was a firmware update?) but Chromecast has remained connected and stable for the last 3 days.... I didn't touch anything... go figure.

If it makes you feel any better, either we're both crazy, or both not.
The same thing happened to me. WiFi simply would not stay connected with 12072, everything was fine on 13300. It would complain on first boot, then would reconnect in a few minutes and stay connected.
Yeah, seems like whatever happened fixed both problems because it now even reconnects after a power cycle (previously I had to disconnect HDMI also for it to reconnect). Sweet!
I got a connection issue similar to this then other day and had to run the installation app again to get it to reconnect.

Couple of months old this thread, but had the same issue, watch a movie through Avia yesterday, came home from work today and it was blinking white, reboot didnt help, unplug and reboot didnt help. Had to reset with the button pressed for 20-25 seconds.. works as it should now tho.. :cyclops:
I've done a few things recently that seemed to have all but stopped my Chromecast connection issues.
1. Changed my phones IP from DHCP to Static. You do this by selecting you're Wifi access point and holding down on it until Modify Network comes up, select it, then check the Show advanced options box, then you'll seee the option to change the IP settings from DHCP to Static.
2. Go into Avia's setting and make sure the Lock Wifi on box is checked. Be warned though this does cain you're phones power so switche it off when you've finished casting.

#2 is the main one here, though your phone might have been hopping between IP leases if you router's DHCP lease time is set very low. Usually it's ~8 days which should more than cover your phone disconnecting WiFi and reconnecting a few times, unless you're binge-watching multiple seasons of something.
Hey guys I am having a similar issue with my chromecast and I am unable to tell if my chromecast is bricked or is it some software issue, I was able to cast all my apps in the morning but when I reconnected my chromecast back with the tv it showed me an error with yellow exclamation mark but after that when i reconnected my chromecast nothing comes on the tv and there is a constant red and white led blinking on my chromecast since.
If anybody could help me out with it I would be grateful.

I keep my Tilt connected to a PC all the time when I am not using it.... To charge it, and transfer files etc.
The problem is that it never appears to turn off when connected, specifically the screen. Now I don't know if phone screens really suffer from any type of "burn-in", but I'm sure there is some type of limited life on the screens.
I have set the Start > Settings > System > Power > Advanced to turn off the device on external power after a couple of minutes, but it does not appear to do anything.
The settings in Start > Settings > System > Backlight > External Power does seem to work. I set it to turn off backlight after 30 seconds and it does.
I often hit the power button on the phone to turn it to standby when I go to sleep but the screen is often on again when I get to it. It think if it gets a call it might wake the screen, and never shut back off.
How can I ensure that the screen stays off (or powers off after activity) while the device is connected to the PC?
thx
Well there is a light in there that can burn out. Um, what happens if you hit that side button that turns that light off? Works for me when my preciouses is blugged into my comp.
the problem with pushing power button when connected to computer...it turns the screen off, but also breaks the connection to Active Sync for some reason..it charges the phone but activesync connection goes down.
but im a newb on the tilt so there might be an option to enable active sync with display off.

ooooooh you know what, whenever I close wow out when I'm done, there is a window saying that active sync was disconnected. I just thought it timed out or something. Hmmmmm
After is has synced do you really need it to keep refreshing?

That works, but the problem is if someone calls (or maybe if some other notification comes in...SMS, email, calendar appointment) it lights back up and stays on.
I'm not concerned with ActiveSync disconnecting, I just want to plug it into my computer to leave charging and I would rather not power the device ALL the way down.
-thx
I guess I need to pay more attention to mine.

There are programs that you can install that will shut off your screen but leave the rest of the device active. I wouldn't worry about the screen burning though. My Wizard was on like that all the time for over a year (stupid WM6 bug prevented you from turning the phone off if it was plugged in to USB), and my screen never showed any adverse effects.
As long as your backlight goes off, you will be fine.
Hi all,
I frequently charge my X1i through USB. There are 2 problems with this method, however.
1) The device goes into USB drive mode, disabling my SD card apps (I keep them on SD card AT ALL TIMES due to frequent backups/restores)
2) Screen does not turn off! while connected to computer! The screen only dims, but does not turn off.
WITHOUT resorting to a) plugging into wall outlet b) connecting to Activesync, is there any to fix these behaviors?
Thanks!
just let it go into activesync mode, that way you can still access your files on your phone and micro sd card from both your pc and phone. And if you dont like the screen not turning off, they just change the settings or just press the power button, to shut off the display.
I know about the power setting, but when your computer is connected to the computer via USB, it refuses to turn off the screen (only dims it)
what? one simple button press and the screen is off. the device is still visible to the pc. I do it all the time - r3a generic uk rom.
in power options u can set after what time it disables screen... default is never

Weird. When I'm connected to Pc, it dims the screen, it does not shut it off. Also, it does NOT auto-shut of screen after the 2 minutes specific in the Power options
You can also use "safely remove devices" to disconnect the data connection from the phone, it'll still charge.
There's nothing we can do AUTO. But like said before, a simple pression on the power button will do it, or you can use My Mobiler and press F11 on your PC.

Yep, I've had 5 different WinMo devices since '05 and they all worked as expected except the X1. I like to use it as an MP3 player at night, Pocket Player has a sleep timer built in so I just like to leave it running as I drift off most nights. But if I do anything, change the volume, rewind, anything at all the screen comes back on and stays on until I hit some other button to turn it back off. All my other devices obeyed the settings you set in the Power tab, but not the X1...
I'd very much like the screen to auto-off if I tell it to while on USB power. It's not only wasting power, but it wakes me up and gets me fumbling for the tiny power button at 2 in the morning. Any fix would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Peter
I bumped up thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561832 Since it has a better title and shows the exact same unresolved issue...
Reg Fix
Adding this potential fix here as well so anyone subscribed to this thread sees it.
Ok, I think I have a fix for this. I googled around some more and found that this might be an HTC problem more than an SE one. There were various registry keys people suggested to try to fix the 'backlight problem' - which may or may not be related. None of those suggestions seemed to work, but I kept changing keys myself and eventually found this seemed to do the trick.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\Timeouts\ACUserIdle: 120
I confirmed that changing this value affects the amount of time before my X1's screen turns off - but my MP3s still play with the screen off and my phone wakes on receipt of a new call. This value is the # of seconds before the screen turns itself off (in this case 2 minutes). You do need to soft reset for the change to take effect.
This doesn't seem to be posted anywhere else that I've found doing this to fix this issue issue - I changed a few other registry keys as well that might be enabling this fix. So anyone with this problem, please do give this a try and if it doesn't work I'll post the other keys I changed as well - and if it does then post to say so and we're good
Peter
Update: I tested it also while hooked up to the computer and it does work with the phone accessible through active sync with the screen off and the battery charging (faster now that it isn't competing with the screen for power, except for the 2 minutes before it times out). If I want to use it I just click a button and the screen stays on till I leave it alone for 2 mins and it remains off. Get a call or a message and the screen goes on for 2 minutes and then off - Exact same behaviour on AC and USB - exactly the behaviour I wanted .
Okay. I noticed today that when pressed the power button to wake my phone from sleep the wifi or 3g (depending on where i was and what I was connected to, ie home or away) icon was not showing and thus indicating that it wasn't connected. Hmm, I thought it was odd, maybe it was a display error. But I then noticed that my emails and gmails all came through a few seconds after I unlocked the phone (and the connection icon appeared) and that they had all been sent whilst the phone was asleep. So, it seems to me that the phone is disconnecting from any data source when it goes into sleep mode. Now, I am right in thinking that the whole point of push notifications or setting your email to sync every 5 minutes is that the phone will remain connected even whilst asleep, and then wake up (briefly even) when it picks up an email?
I had no power saver on, no smart sync, wifi set to never sleep. Is this normal? It's pretty important that I get my emails as and when they sent to me. Any advice would be great. I am wondering if it's a bug, and whether I need to take to the phone back to exchange for another one?
Info: not rooted, stock rom software no. 1.28.61.7, kernal 3.4.10-gddcfb8c [email protected] #1 SMP PREEMPT, carrier EE (UK).
Cheers
you're sure power saver in the top menu wasn't on? because that's what it does, turns off wifi and data when the screen is off for an expended period.
maybe cycle it on and off a couple of times and see if the problem persists...

No, isn't normal.
So, can you upgrade to the latest firmware and, maybe, do a full wipe?
Did you install some app for battery?
And check that your power saver isn't on...
Check under power, setting that sleep mode is off. That on by default on mine. It turns data off after extended screen of time and doesn't require the power save to be activated.

Hmm, no additional battery apps, power saving toggled and definitely off (I purposefully turned it off because of it's data management policy), and sleep mode set to off.
So, I'm right in thinking that you/others actually get notifications then? and wifi/3g is working fine? Looks like it's a return and hope that the next one works (I only got the phone 7days ago). My software update says no updates available, though this is likely to be EE fault. If I can get the shop to exchange I might just do that. Ho hum, another 3 hours setting the thing up again then...
It seems to be a Wifi switching itself off problem...

So, a quick update in case anyone else is having this problem.
I reset the phone to see if it would make a difference and it kind of has. Now I have noticed that if I am using mobile data it's fine. Things are pushed, notifications come through. But if I use Wifi it's a different matter.
it seems that with Wifi on and connected then it works for around 15 minutes when the phone is sleeping (I have done a few tests). After this it seems to shut wifi down and hence no notifications. So it would seem to me that although Power Saving is set to OFF, and Sleep mode (ie no data in sleep) is set to OFF, the phone is still disconnecting from WIfi regardless of the settings. Which is a bit frustrating as I don't want to be connected to the mobile network all the time, especially at home, but still want to know if I receive emails.
Anyone else experienced this Wifi switching itself off issue (and then switching itself on as soon as you manually wake the phone?)? I have to decide whether to return the phone for a replacement or not. If this is a wide ranging issue it might not be worth it - though I'd have thought a simply thing, like keeping wifi on at all times wouldn't be hard to make sure it worked.
there are a few apps available on the play store such as "keep wifi alive" which might do the trick.

Okay, now I feel a bit of Doughnut! I think I've found out what was causing this. So, even though I had Power Saver OFF, Smartsync OFF, Sleep Mode (disconnect data whilst sleep) OFF, I hadn't had a proper look in the Wifi settings, and under Advanced I found:
Advanced>Keep Wifi on during Sleep. This hadn't been set to Always and was set to 'Only when plugged in'. So, changed to 'Always' and now it seems to work (and that would explain why I got emails through the night when charging).
So, apart from feeling a little red-faced for not exploring every single menu available, I am happy it (seems) sorted. If anyone has wifi dropping whilst phone is sleeping it seems there are four steps:
SmartSync = OFF [in Mail app]
Power Saver = OFF [in status bar and Power Settings]
Sleep Mode = OFF [in Power Settings]
Keep Wifi on during Sleep = Always [in Wifi>Advanced Settings]
Hopefully this'll help anyone else who has been having a bit of prolonged blond moment with the phone settings. {retreats to corner}

I have similar problem. Even when I have everything OFF as you suggest, I get disconnected a second after screen goes off. When I turn phone back on, I can see that wifi is on, but all aps are off and wont connect again. I have to turn wifi off and on and applications like skype go again online. I have this problem at home and also at work on corporate network. I have even tried apps that should keep wifi on, but with no change.
Interesting is that after the phone goes to sleep mode, I can see that speed of wifi is changing on phone. The phone actualy stays connected to wifi, but doesn't send or receive data.
The router at home is TP-Link 1043ND with DD-WRT (flashed to last firmware to see if it fixes this problem). I'm not sure what brand and type are corporate APs, but could be some cisco or similar.
Any advice what else I could try?
Got my chromecast day and tried setting it up, first few attempts failed. When I plugged the CC into my TV, the screen shows the 'home' or default CC setup screen then it goes blank.
Eventually I managed to set everything up without plugging the CC in, it updated too. Then I tried casting from youtube, it found the device no problem but when I plug it into the TV, after about 10 seconds or so of casting the device 'resets' and then the CC logo appears and it says 'restoring factory settings'
Bought this brand new off eBay, unboxed. Seems bust to me. Anyone else had these issues? I've tried different HDMI ports and using the USB/AC power. The TV is a Samsung.
TLDR It works fine until I actually plug it into the TV, then it resets itself and I have to do the setup over.

What is the first 4 of your serial?
Some units have buttons that tend to get stuck in the pushed position, which will cause a settings reset like you describe.
You can...
get a piece of weak tape (scotch tape, painter's tape or light duty masking tape) and stick it to the button, then pull it off
push on your reset button firmly (but not crushingly), wiggle slightly, then release to see if it pops back up
flick the button with your fingernail
That's done it! The button didn't seem depressed but I pressed it a few times to see if it 'clicked' back out, didn't seem to make any difference, but when I tried the setup again it ran smoothly!
thanks dude!
:good: Funny little buttons...

Sounds like you need a reset as it does not seem to be booting properly....
What screen do you see on the CCast?
Are you powering the chromecast from the tv's USB? It's possible the voltage supplied from the TV is not compatible with the chromecast. Try the wall adapter that came with it.

Try gently wiggling the button back and forth - some units have had "sticky" buttons, though in your case it sounds like maybe it's misaligned and not pushing the actual button.
You could try flicking the button with your finger too, but if you really can't reset it, probably best to get a replacement.
Try logging in with the setup app and doing a Factory Reset...
After I did a factory reset of my Chromecast I had issues setting it up with my mobile device (nexus 6). Turned out that I had privacy guard on and it was blocking location from the Chromecast app. Once I allowed that it setup just fine. Hope that helps anyone out there.
