[Q] S3 mini - damaged charging socket, not rooted - can I back up? - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I've been meaning to root my S3 mini for ages, and it's developed a fault with the miniUSB (or whatever it's called) socket. It's had the problem before, and when it was sent off, the device was wiped. Is there any way I can back it up before I send it? I'm nervous of trying to root it in case something goes amiss with the socket while it's rooting...
The problem it's having is that it often refuses to charge and I have to take the plug out and put it back in several times before it notices it. Then after it's charged, when I unplug it it still thinks it's charging until I shut it down and remove then replace the battery. I guess the charging socket or circuitry is a bit buggered!

Charging i9000m Disconnects/Connects

Hey Guys,
Can you tell me if my phone is screwed? I am starting to realize that its getting more difficult to charge my phone. When I plug it in, then it starts charging, but when I move the phone (like the cable where it connects) it easily disconnects. I thought it may be the cable, so I used another one and its the same thing! I believe its my charging port.
My fear is that if it gets worst, I cannot charge the best phone ever, and I just bought it.
Any ideas?
Could it also be the power socket? Does the charger plug fit in snugly?

[Q] Galaxy note not charging

Hi,
First off, I have a non rooted, stock Galaxy note. It's not modded in any way.
The problem started occurring yesterday, all was just fine before. Since then, it won't charge no matter what USB cable or charger I use.
1) Phone on
- I plug the charger to the phone : nothing. The phone doesn't register being connected to the OEM wall-charger.
- I connect the phone using the OEM USB cable to my computer (tryed 3 different computers) : Nothing.
I also tried another charger and several USB cables : no luck.
2) Phone off
- I plug the charger / I connect my phone to a computer using USB cable : the phone boot up and doesn't charge the battery.
Any thought ?
Thx in advance.
Try using some compressed air to clean out the usb port on the Galaxy Note. I had a similar issue with an iPhone once and there ended up being a piece of lint stuck on 1 of the contacts which made it unable to charge. Could be the case with your phone. Other than that contact Samsung and see what they can do for you.
Thx for the advice.
I'll try that out and call over Samsung.
Try factory reset if that could help..

Update:
I tried a micro USB Host Cable (OTG Cable) and it's working fine : recognized and plugged in USB stick is working fine.
Also, I tried a factory reset after backuping my data. All went fine but sadly the problem is still there : no charging.
More update:
After two days, It started working again as if it never happened.
Still wondering what might have caused it
Might be the dust that settled on the battery pins and the contacts on your phone.. happens some times .. glad its back to work.. poor thing..

Happened to me too! It wouldn't charge until I turned off the phone. It worked after I cleaned the phone and usb cable's metal parts--sorry no correct jargon for this--with rubbing alcohol. Make sure there's no lint left from the cleaning.
Yup, had this. On charge with stock charger in the mains. Battery dropping fast, back (top) getting warm. I turned the screen off, left it for 5 mins. Looked again, it was 2% less!
Reboot fixed it.
There did not seem to be any rogue program using the CPU, but I now have a meter and a better logger to examine this if it occurs again. I assume the system got into a loop somewhere, although the phone was normally responsive.

Happening to my phone as well right now. I was worried that the battery is dying so I got a spare online. But it doesn't make sense that its charging and know that it is on one state and not the other.
I panicked so I replaced Rocket Rom with Cassie's. It's still doing this.
Have you guys checked if there is a weird smell from your battery? I thought that was something to look at but dont all batteries smell like that?
galaxy note is experiencing the same hardware problems as galaxy s2 phones. I am very pissed off at samsung. I bought a new galaxy note in dominican republic and after one month of delicate use the phone developed charging problems. Drive mode would start automatically or the phone would shut off all by itself and a battery removal reset would turn the phone on again. then finally, the phone would stay in charging mode even after the usb charge cable is removed. the phone would discharge quickly and then would not turn on. I finally gave the phone to repair dept at claro phone company. they would not fix it and are just showing me a middle finger. Now I guess, I would have to learn to change the charging port myself. After seeing galaxy s2 videos, I see many ribbon contacts would get corroded and need to be cleaned frequently. Many phones were just less than 2 months old and had so much corrosion on the contacts. this is bad design and I think the high current draw for a dual core phone of that huge screen size is causing all kinds of electrical corrosion on the contacts inside the phone. this sucks majorly as I loved the phone when I had it working fine. Now I think I have bought a problem with my saved cash. I will try to repair my own phone soon as I get it back from the repair dept.
My Galaxy Note is doing a similar thing. Not all the same symptoms, but a few similarities.
The other night, when the charger was plugged in the phone kept changing it's mind whether it was plugged in or not - probably every few seconds I was getting the chime it makes when you plug the phone in. I eventually managed to charge the phone by turning it off, removing the battery, replacing it, plugging the charger in, waiting for it to start charging, then turning it on.
Today my phone was trying to tell me it was charging when it wasn't even plugged in to anything!
As with the above post, my phone has been getting hot occasionally and the drive mode has started by itself a few times.
I've used three chargers and four cables.
I'll be taking it along to where I bought it from later on today.
Battery not charging
G Note Battery is not charging .. same problem as of 1st post.
Changed usb cables, chargers, thru PC, laptop, direct wall, cleaning etc
Every thing fails. one month old set ?
OMG, glad to know I'm not the only one. Bought a Galaxy Note from a brazilian network provider (VIVO) and after 1 week of usage I'm experiencing the same problems as you guys.
My phone will only charge when it is powered off and USB connection does not work anymore (even in download mode). Before the problem onset, I noticed some MTP connection and SD Card rescanning without connecting to the PC.
Did a factory reset and got no results. Downloaded Odin Mobile and flashed stock rom and the problem persists.
Has anyone found a fix or the cause for this?
Thanks!
Missing my old Galaxy S...
Strange! After a full night charge, now I can unplug and plug the battery and continue charging from where I stop without turning it off.
I can now get beeps when connecting to PC. It show MTP-Inicialization in the Note screen but I have no access to to Note partitions in Windoes Explorer.
Update: One more strange thing just happened now.
Went to college and left it charging. When I came back at night, tried to connect the Note to the PC and everything is working ok now.
What?!?! Now I'm confused. How can I send it to warranty now? I think I'll have to wait a couple more days.
issue as well
That is my 3rd galaxy note, first one screen cracked, second dont ask me why it was not modified at all but it was so sluggish and froxze all the time, my 3rd one it is rooted device and i have similar issue...I am thinking is it because i was charging it from my wife's htc one phone? I thought they would have the same pins...anyway it is doomed, i tried so many chargers and problem not solved
ok i can comfirm to everyone that i have fixed the problem by buying contact cleaner spray and sprayed inside the usb and beautiful all back to normal!
Nooo..
Have a charging problem as well :/ It detects the charging cable and shows the battery icon with the circle about to charge. But it just turns off before it starts charging, turns on shows the icon again, turns off, turns on, shows the battery icon and so on. I have tried with two different chargers. For me i looks like the voltage is too low? Maybe the battery needs a jumpstart? I'll just leave it in the charger and see what happens. Suggestions welcome
Edit: It's just two weeks old, damn it. Last night I used it untill the battery was empty. That is why I think the voltage is so low it doesnt accept charge.
Edit2: Fixed! Puh! I was right. Battery needed a higher mah to start the charging. Leaving the post as it is for future reference.
same problem here, however it charges from my laptop... how strange?

[Q] Note keeps saying charging when not plugged in

Hi all,
I've noticed today out of nowhere, that my Galaxy Note keeps turning it's screen on due to being connected to a charger, when it hasn't. I've tried turning the phone off since it was seriously draining my battery, but it turns itself on and goes to the battery meter and then restarts again. The charging symbol appears when using the phone on and off, and I was just wondering what I could do to fix this?
I've tried flashing a new ROM incase but the problem is still there :/
Thanks in advance!
Try cleaning the contacts on your usb port.
Also your usb port could be damaged.
I have also a similar issue on my n7000 I replaced the port and its fine now Samsung ports from factory are crap

It also happened to me. I had to open up the Note and clean up the usb port to get rid of the problem.
Phone Charging when Not Plugged In - The Definitive Answer
Samsung Galaxy Note
I've had same problem as reported by many others with phone displaying charge icon when not plugged in. I've tried all the recommended solutions. Here's what I've found:
1. Not related to JellyBean update (it happened just after I updated but turns out to be coincidence)
2. Factory reset or flashing doesn't help (it's a hardware problem)
3. Clean out the USB port (there's all kinds of fluff, dirt, lost keys, foreign coins etc in there!) - don't use soapy water for this...
4. Bend the pins (gently) so that they are located in the centre of the port.
In my case it's the charging cradle I was using that was damaging the port. I'm using a flip-case on my phone which means the phone doesn't fit in the cradle properly and I was having to force it to sit on the connector. The pins had become bent and were shorting out against the edge of the port.
Replacing the port is painless, if you have any mechanical aptitude. Numerous youtube videos show how to change it.
Takes about 15 minutes. Just make sure you get the correct port. If you get the wrong one, you're signal will degrade
considerably
I had the same problem and I have managed to solve the problem by replacing the usb port. I bought the usb port from ebay but you must open up your note first to see which revision of usb port board you have inside the phone. I think it makes a difference so the revision number has to match with the old port.
Cleaning the port and straightening the pins helped for a few months but then the problem came back again. changing the old port for a new one solved the problem. I think their usb ports in galaxy phones are crap.

Galaxy Tab S2 SM-T710 overheating when OFF and plugged in!

Hi everyone,
I'm really hoping someone can help me.
I have a Samsung galaxy tab s2 8inch. It is the SM-T710.
It was working fine playing music on a Bluetooth speaker system then the battery died.
Tried to charge it and it was acting funny, said it was charging then got to one or two percent and i attempted to power on while the device is on charge and it powered on then turned off within a few seconds.
Let the tablet charge for a while now and its not really going up and the screen has gone off and its not turning on and i now notice its getting really hot at the bottom part of the screen slightly above the home button.
Removed the charger and left it for one hour, then came back and tried with a different new genuine Samsung charger and cable, and still getting extremely hot within a few 5 - 10 seconds just above the home button.
Unplugged it and left it till the next day and attempted to charge it again same thing.
I though it could be either: A faulty battery or A faulty Micro USB charging port flex (possibly short circuiting).
Now Ive opened up the whole device and taken apart every item on the mother board following a tear down video on YouTube.
I then connected a brand new genuine battery to the board and removed the old one, and the device was still overheating however this time i could pin point the exact source of heat on the motherboard which i will circle on an image but cant attach to this post as i need ten posts.
The images are on my public google drive but i cannot share the links here any ideas?
I then thought the micro USB charging port flex is causing a short circuit and so i completely disconnected that and the overheating problem still occurred.
Then i disconnected each and every component one by one and still the same thing on the motherboard keeps overheating excessively within seconds of connecting the battery to the motherboard.
Now Ive completely removed the motherboard from the frame and Ive connected the battery to it and same overheating issue.
Now Ive reconnected just the micro USB charging port back to the motherboard and attempted to plug a charging cable into the port and exactly the same thing still overheating excessively.
I really do not want to replace my motherboard simply because of the data on the device etc.
Can someone please tell me what the red circled item is in my image so i know what is overheating!
Could it be the CPU?
Is there ANY other way to replace JUST that part, even in china? Can anyone advise or help me?
Many thanks to the people who patiently read this and helped.

+1
I guess the motherboard got corrupted
First off, do not boot up an almost empty device. Second, it is entirely normal that the bottom area (charging port, home button etc) gets hot while charging. It will fade after the battery got some essential energy. Third, do not deplete the battery completely, if possible. In the long run it may damage the longevity of the battery.
Was there ever a solution to this issue? I'm having the same problem.

Slow charging and fluctuating current on S5 mini

Hi,
My wife's S5 mini seems to have developed a nasty habit of not even fully charging overnight.
When using a USB powermeter, I see the current fluctuating between (roughly) 200 and 800mA. Other devices on the same multiport USB charger have no such issues, so it is not the charger.
When using the OEM charger and lead it will also charge very slow, to the point where it may not even be full the next morning.
I downloaded the Galaxy charging app (very informative on my S4), but it always shows 1mA chargingcurrent, so I assume it does not work on the S5 mini.
I cleaned the USB-port on the phone and removed some lint, but no difference.
Wiggling the micro-USB-plug makes no difference, nor do different charging cables.
We switched the phone OFF and removed and reseated the battery: the problem persists.
What I did NOT yet do is swap the battery (we have two same-age S5 mini's in the house and only one has the issue). If I can pry the second one from my daughters hands, I will try this and report back. Obviously if the problem moves with the battery, it is the battery. If not, it's the phone. Or if the problem is gone, then it is just those darn Gremlins again.
What I also did not do is boot into safe mode (or whatever is sometimes adviced) as the phone does not go through its battery fasst, it just charges very slow. An inefficient app would also not explain the fluctuating currentdraw (certainly not it dropping below 500mA when battery is 80% empty), so atm I don't consider an app to be a likely culprit.
Any ideas are welcomed.
Ideas:
1. Install and use the free app Ampere to check both cable and charger;
2. Turn phone off and plug in charger, even off it shows the percent charged, so you can check if it's system software problem or not.
Check if the micro usb port is dirty. You can't imagine how much dirt can get there, specially fibers from clothes. Normally I use a needle to clean it, maybe there is something more appropiate.
Got the same problem after 3months use.
To avoid this problem:
1- Plug the charger
2- After 5 seconds connect micro-usb into the phone
If you connect first the phone to the charger it will not charge properly
