bit lost in "new i9305 what now" thread - Galaxy S III I9305 (4G LTE + 2GB RAM) Q&A, Help &

I was following this thread here: [IMPORTANT][GUIDE] What to do after you have bought your Galaxy S3 4G GT-I9305? and I got a bit lost in part 6.
I've done following:
1. Kies and drivers and on PC
2. IMEI/NV backed up on PC (USB modes set forth and back)
3.-4. Rooted and CWM recovery installed
5. Nandroid backup taken on external SD
6. Soo I got my backups secured in 2 locations..but what now?.. It says I have to go to part 2 and continue where I left off?
quote:
"Remember where you left off in 2nd step above? Well now you can go back and complete the partition backup of the efs folders. You should be left with 4 backup files for this final section of the backup process >>> http://splashurl.com/o7hwdsr"
But there is no mention of efs folders in part 2-link. I'm confused. I'm not native english speaker, so that messes up things sometimes.
BTW I did install Cerberus ROM at some point (Don't ask me why. Love the features, but don't know if there's any benefit it being flashed).
So I'm Rooted, CWMed and installed Cerberus ROM. I guess I have no stock ROM anymore?
And last: Is there a place you can search stock ROMs?
Edit #X: I found stock rom for what I have in phone. Galaxy S 3 LTE GT-I9305 I9305XXBMI3 Android 4.1.2

My first language is English and I didn't quite get it either. But following all the steps gave me nandroid backup and i think the qcn file is good enough for you to restore. seeing as you managed to flash a rom I guess you're all good. I was following the steps too and after I didn't get that part I just went ahead and flashed ROM, had no problems, maybe it was an edit error and guide maker forgot to add in something?

Difficult but reads as backup EFS to me and its no harm to have more than one backup .
So I'm Rooted, CWMed and installed Cerberus ROM. I guess I have no stock ROM anymore?
Correct.

[Q] Nandroid backup

Hi all
Is Nandroid backing up all the apps I've got at that moment? Or it just saves system files?
Like a complete and exact "photo" or are there things that I should do on my own if I mean to recover exactly as it was...
I assume that no wipe is necessary...
Thanks!
What's the truth about Nandroid backup?!
i guess there's no need to open a new topic, because i got kinda the same question
before you guys start to redirect me to the "search" function, i want to assure you that i have been using it, but i have found myself in a very strange situation, one question, two different answers... and because i'm new to the whole root stuff, i want to learn everything correctly before starting to make modifications to my phone
The question is: Nandroid backup, does it also back up the kernel or not?
I mean, if i root and install a custom rom that also comes with a custom kernel, will i be able to use my previous Nandroid backup to restore my phone to the old rom & kernel?
Searching the forums, i have found 2 totally different answers!
Answer 1: Nandroid does not backup the kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=806340
Answer 2: Nandroid does backup the kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=844352
So, please make me and all of us root noobs understand once and for all, does it backup the kernel or not?, will we be able to restore from a custom rom+kernel in case we need to?
and does it backup apps?
OK...As I understand it....
What does Nandroid Backup?
The ROM Itself..Obviously.
All your system settings, emails, SMSes, etc
All the Apps you have installed, so no need for TB
The Kernel you have installed (though there is controversy about this, and to be honest, I have never restored a nandroid backup when I had a different kernel already installed...however it really doesn't matter since kernels are easy to flash)
What does Nandroid NOT backup - This is VERY IMPORTANT
The modem (not a big deal)
The File System setting (A BIG DEAL)
This I think is where the confusion arises concerning the kernel being included in the nandroid backup. For many people the kernel is all about the lagfix. If you have installed a lagfix on your phone via the kernel, say changing the file system to Ext4, and then flash a Nandroid backup that includes a stock kernel or other kernel that does NOT support Ext4, you are in for a world of hurt...and in this case hurt means endless bootloops.
The way you avoid this is, if you need to flash a Nandroid with a kernel that does not support your lagfix...go into recovery, disable whatever lagfix, tell it when it asks that you wish to REBOOT INTO RECOVERY after the change....then flash the nandroid you wish.
This is why it is very important to keep regular nandroid backups, and to wait and see if a ROM/Kernel are stable for you before applying lagfixes or other tweaks.
So, let me see if i got this right, Nandroid does backup up my current kernel along with my rom, but if i apply any changes (lagfix) to my kernel afterwards or change it with a custom one with lagfix, nandroid won't be able to restore it anymore...
so the whole problem here is that nandroid is not able to backup / restore The File System setting, this being the rfs / ext4 transition
If this is the case, it seems that the Nandroid type backup is not as powerful as i thought, you can't really change from one rom to another in just a few clicks, but then again i guess that all the customs roms already come with some type of lagfix and you can make a nandroid restore between them, the problem would be when you want to revert back to a stock kernel, then you'll have to disable the lagfixes or simply flash a stock kernel and then restore the stock nandroid backup
so, i got this right guys?

Yes as I understand it.
You see Nandroid can't convert your file system or change anything, all it can do is flash a disc image onto your phone. If that image can work with your file system, you are golden. If not, it is like flashing a Mac OS image onto a Windows machine....nothing will work right.
However the good news is that most custom kernels support Ext4...so really the only problem comes when you try to flash back to a stock image...or vice versa.
got it then, thanks for your answers
and, if i still got your attention, maybe one more question
i just downloaded a stock firmware from samfirmwares.com, and all i got is a .tar file, can i use it somehow to flash just the kernel from it or i have to flash the whole firmware?
if i flash the whole firmware, will it also change my PHONE and CSC?, because the .tar file must be put just in the PDA section in odin

Yes, it will flash the PDA, csc, modem and kernel...the whole shooting match. The single file firmwares are designed like that to avoid mismatches and issues. Once you flash it, flash a kernel that supports cwm (I suggest speedmod or something by CHAINFIRE) via odin, then flash a new csc and modem if you wish from recovery.
Remember that installing a new csc will do a factory reset so do it before reinstalling apps.

finally i got enough info and i can start my root & flash procedure, guess i'll also learn a few other tricks along the way, this community is definetly the place to be if you want to learn how to "really use" your device
the whole info about the issues with the Nandroid type backup should be integrated in one of those massive info topics, so the root noobs like me know what they're dealing with

Hey guys i actually used the search button (yay) and this is definitely the most informative one regarding the topic.
However i still have one more question: does it backup files and folders as well? Ie. my Nexus S storage is mainly used up by my videos and music (about 7-10GB) which are in their own folders and not tied to any apps in particular. Hence if it does include those i wouldn't have enough storage space to create a nandroid backup am i right?
Edit: thanks to the search button i didn't realise that i posted on a Galaxy S forum please forgive me, the question should still be relevant to the topic though

As I understand it, it does save folders and files, so yes if you have large data folders on your internal SD it will make GIGANTIC nandroid backups. You may want to store such files one your external SD.
I know that there is a version of CWM that does not backup /data/media in Nandroid on the Galaxy Tab 10.1...perhaps there is something similar that I don't know about for Galaxy phones. Does anyone know?

Struggling With ICS EFS/IMEI Restore

Hey all,
I should mention first that I have a DesireHD and have never worked with a Sammy before today.
I went about looking to root and upgrade my friends SGS.
Followed this guide and all went swimmingly.
I got my head around what ODIN is and does, what files are what and how the procedures work for Samsung phones.
ICS booted and performed exceedingly well apart from the IMEI problems.
Now, over the past few hours Ive tried everything from as many guides I could find about backing up and restoring /efs. Nothing is working.
Ive tried all flavours of ICS ROMS but they all end up with a completely blank IMEI and unknown details in the phone status menu.
If I flash back to stock GB located in the kit from the guide all is well, phone works. ICS - no IMEI.
I took several backups of /efs using RootExplorer, Nitrality and taring through ADB. The restore just not work.
I also manually fixed permissions through RE and also using ADB shell.
The only common thing is that the IMEI through *#06# is completely blank, not 0's or 049 etc, just blank.
What would be my next step from here to get it working with ICS? Have I missed something? Is it just not going to work with this particular device?
I probably wont have the phone again till next week as I left it on rooted stock GB for now so have plenty of time to dig a little deeper into the issue ut would appreciate any help.
Thanks
Hello.Ive been on ics since the beggining and at first i had no problems at all.Last couple of weeks i started to have problems with phone signal and imei.Kinda lost baseband, huge battery drain, phone shutdowns and when restarted no imei or baseband unknown.Went back to Gingerbread and all was ok despite some battery usage but my phone has 2 years and i cant ask too much of my old battery. Was kinda disapointed but today i flashed Elite rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1621976 and for my surprise the phone handle well without loosing imei or baseband.
So my advice is to get chainfires recovery for gingerbread and then flash Elite rom.It will give you a bootloop when restarting so you have to remove the battery, get to recovery and flash the rom again. Good luck
PS- Dont forget to wipe data, cache, dalvik and system before you flash

Coolio, theres a couple of apps in there that I hadnt come across so Ill defo give them a try at the weekend!
*sigh*
Still no luck with any of those apps.
Im gonna try everything from scratch tomorrow using the original CWM backup I did rather than from the rooted stock I flashed from the guide.
Am I missing something here? It seems that no matter what I try it will always give me a blank IMEI.
It wouldn't be by any chance be a I9000m or b? Probably a stupid question, but you never know.

Did you backup the efs before your first flash, the procedure I have always used is root stock rom copy efs and flash custom rom. Not sure if cwm backs up efs in a nandroid

I pretty sure its just a standard I9000, it was Vodafone UK branded before I got my grubby mits on it and I read a guide specifically for the M which lead me to believe it wasnt anything special. When on official GB its just says I9000 still?

I only really went of this from the guide:
THIS ROM AUTOMATICALLY SAVES YOUR IMEI FOR RESTORING IN CASE YOU LOSE IT!
after seeing that I took a manual backup of it the /efs as well and every time I flashed with ODIN using the GB flash kit from the guide I checked that the phone side was working then took another backup of it then.
I have several copies of it made from the GB kit, tared in adb and several apps used to back it up.
Your right with the CWM backup though, I read a post that said /efs is a separate partition that doesn't get backup up with CWM
My thinking at the minute is that either Ive missed something related to the branding side of it. I know one DHD I did needed things like a goldcard etc as it was Orange branded or the /efs backups I have have somehow been corrupted.
Now, Im still getting used to the versioning of Samsung FWs. Its currently on
Code:
GT_I9000_XWJW5_XDJV1_OXXJVC_Sbl
is this newer or older than
Code:
CWM ValuePack XXJVU Odex/Deodexed 2.3.6 [06-01-2012]
? It works fine on the first GB one.
Im thinking of flashing the second one today with odin then trying the stock AOKP rom as it doesnt install a kernal but flash Semaphore seperately. All the other ICS roms I tried flash a kernal before hand if that could make a difference?
Man, gotta say this /efs has proper knocked me over. Im not great with non-HTC products lol
Have you tried flashing semaphore.tar from the semaphore ics thread before anything else? It's kind of an all around wonder medicine for flashing issues.

first android + first rooting

Hello,
A few moths ago i bought my first android device, the Galaxy Note. With time, i learned about rooting and instaling roms. I finally decides to root it, but i have some questions about it and i hope you could help me.
For root it, i will follow the steps of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
And i choose to root stock ICS with safe kernel (what does that mean? I search but it's still not clear to me)
There, it says that i have to download a file according to the installed rom here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
The info of my note is:
ICS 4.0.4 N7000XXLRB
Kernel 3.0.15-N7000XXLRI-CL811902
So according to the second thread, one of the following files should work:
XXLRK
XXLRL
XXLRT
XXLRU
XXLRW
But I don't know exactly which one? Does it matter?
Now, evidently after this i will try to flash a rom (after i learn how to do it, altough i already have an idea, i just have to choose the rom)
My question here, is it possible (before flashing the new rom) to backup the actual rom? (not necesarily the apps since i can install them again) so i could install it afterwards in case of anything that could go wrong or if i don't like the new rom, etc. I guess that a factory reset with the flashed rom will not work.
I hope you could help me.
BR,.
Check the build number of your rom in about phone section ...check the last 3 letters and choose the kernel from the 2nd link you provided.
put it on ext sd and flash from stock recovery and done,
done you boot .. again boot into recovery and this time you will see cwm-philz.
go to backup and restore and do a backup ... this will backup your entire ROM all apps and data.
Hi, thanks for your answer.

BR,
It's the last 3 letters not start 3 letters. So if you rom build number is LRK then LRK. You have not mentioned your rom build number. There are no options.
Yes once backup done, you can follow the procedure and flash custom roms

I see, but the author of that post said that you can mix builds as long as they are similar, like LRK with LRI or so... but not LRK with ABC for example... that's why i asked that... And what do i do if my buid number is not there?
Yes that's true. Ics kernels are compatible with other versions too. Like ddlr9 can be used on xxlrt
i see, but then wich one i choose, or i can use any?
can you see your rom build number there..? if not then you can use LRK or LRT
OK, thank you so much...

Hello, I just root my note... :victory:
Now, I tried to do a backup, but i got an error... i think that's probably for lack of space in my external sdcard... i just have a little bit under 500Mb...
How much space will the backup take? Can i do the backup in the sdcar in the phone?
Could depend on data
Stock ones are usually 700-1Gb
Choose the option of backup to internal sd
hi, thanks again.
Trying to free space in my ext sdcard, i found a new folder clockwordmod... i guest that is what i just installed...
Inside of it, there are 2 folders: blobs (520Mb) and backup (16 Mb)...
I guest i must not touch the blobs folder, but cai i delete the backup content, i'm guesing it contains the failed backup i just do...
After freeing space (2.5Gb free) int the ext sdcard, i've trying to do the backup, but know i get this error...
backing up data...
error while making a backup image of /data!
And it stops... I don't think is a space problem, right?
clear the memory so that there is enough space. delete the blobs and clockworkmod folder
boot into recovery. go to backup and restore and make the default backup format to tar and not dup. then do a bakcup

[Q] Can we verify whether or not our backups have been corrupted?

Hey guys, I just have a general question that (seemingly) applies to all Android phones. I'm posting this question in the GS3 mini section because I have a MetroPCS Galaxy Exhibit [SGH-T599N] and I guess that's where we're we've been relegated to, but this question, as I said, could really apply to any phone. My question is this: how can I verify that my NAND backups are not corrupted?
Here's some context: I recently flashed to CM 11. Everything's running great, it's my daily driver, and I love it. It's easily the best, most smooth ROM I've ever used but I recently discovered a need to flash back to the stock ROM backup I was running pre-CM 11. Before I flashed to CM 11 I was running the standard JB stock and incidentally I was also using a different Kik username. After flashing to CM 11 and installing Kik, I decided to make a new username. Now, given that I never logged out of that old username (the one I was using on JB stock), I know that if I were to flash back to that old ROM, I'd boot into a ROM that's logged into that old account. I need to be able to do this because I need to access that old Kik account's chat logs for personal reasons. My problem now is due to two issues: my amazing stupidity and...well, no that's really it.
At the time I was running stock I was running CWM recovery. I made a backup using Rom Manager but like an idiot I backed up to my internal SD card. In order to flash to CM 11 I had to wipe my internal memory, which eventually lead to me losing that backup. My only silver lining is this: I made one backup to external sd about a week before I flashed to CM 11.
Here's where it gets messy: Not knowing that the backup on the external sd was for my stock pre-CM 11 ROM, I stupidly deleted it to free up space and began saving files onto the external sd card. After I had flashed to CM 11 I made about three CM 11 backups. I deleted my pre-CM 11 backup because I mistook it for one of these three CM 11 backups. Upon realizing the height of my stupidity, I just finished recovering these lost folders and files using a data recovery program, but I have no idea whether or not the files have been irreparably corrupted. Is there any way I can verify that this backup is still good to use? I don't want to risk attempting to flash back to my old ROM only to have it wind up bricking my phone. Does anyone know of a good way I can figure this out? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,

I deleted my pre-CM 11 backup because I mistook it for one of these three CM 11 backups. if you recovered it immediately after deletion - then it's most likely still good. I don't think there's any way to fully verify backups; but I will say this if you do chose to use that backup and it fails, you should easily be able to flash any rom over again to correct it, or even use odin to go back to stock rom and try again. The only way you truly hard-brick phones is flashing something over usb and it gets disconnected haflway through, or you accidently flash somethign to the wrong partition (if you were using hiemdall), generally speaking for nearly 80% of bricks are sem-bricks and should easily be able to recover from.

Thanks for your quick reply, Exo. I'm curious, do you think inspecting the .log file would be able to give me an indication about the integrity of the backup? In going through old backups I was able to open the .log file in Notepad and read in plaintext what was written there. If this could be used as an marker of the backup's health, then it seems I may be out of luck as the .log file for this backup seems like nothing but jibberish. I've opened it with Notepad, Notepad++, and I even installed a different third party program that's reads .log files exclusively (called Baretail), all to no avail. I'll try flashing to this backup in the meantime but I'm curious: do you think attempting to read the .log file could be a good way to verify the backup's integrity, or is there something I'm missing here? Thanks for your time.
Adam
First you should make a nandroid of your current ROM (CM I presume) so that if you brick your phone while trying to restore the stock backup, you'll still have the CM backup to restore if something goes wrong and the phone can't boot or says that there's no os installed.

[GT-I9070] Unble to root
Hello guys, hope you are well.
As I have less than 10 post, I came here to Q&A to seek for some assistance. The problem is that I cannot root my Samsung S Advance (GT-I9070), I am trying to do so with the method mentioned in the quote below. Basically, when I am in the "Recovery Mode" and when I go to the external storage to open the .zip file, the .zip file is not there...
Any clues?
Model Number:
GT-I9070
Android Version:
4.1.2
Baseband Version:
I9070UBLPK
Build Number:
JZO54K.I9070UBLPK

I finally managed to root JB. It is a hassle free process. No kernel changing required.
It doesn't increase the binary counter.
Download here : Root
How to :
1. Download the zip and place it in the root of your sd card.
PS : SD Card is a must.
2. Reboot to the stock recovery.
3. Select install update from external storage.
4. Select the root.zip file.
5. Viola
Enjoy your rooted JB.
Note : This method has been derived from a method to root SGS2. Thanks to Phil3759 and his thread.
Be a sport. Buy me a coffee..!!

Put that zip in the root of SD Card, not in some folder you have there.

Repartition your external SD card. http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SD_card_partitioning
It is not formating, it is partitioning. Ofcourse backup files from it first.

Hi thank you for the help!
I have found the following app that might do it just with the cellphone:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sylkat.AParted
Going to try it out!
EDIT:
I just finished rooting with the method posted. Thank you for the help, I do not understand why my previous FAT partition did not recognized the .zip file. I tried the method using the MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition and worked as a charm.
Thank you for everything
Regards!

noob to rooting
hello, I am a complete noob to rooting.
Although i have my s advance ( on stock jelly bean now ) since more then 2 years now, its only now that i have decided to install a custom rom ( kitkat 4.4 , cyanogenmod 11 to be precise ).
I have been reading around and have seen many people flashing new roms losing their imei no, efs, etc and also may sites advising making a nandroid backup of my current stock rom in case i want to return to it. And that we need to root our device to make up a nandroid and to back up our efs and imei no, etc.
Have also read thtat to go back to stock ROM after rooting, Supersu ( already comes with the package needed to root ) can help me do it just by clicking some buttons ( as easy as that )
So I had decided to root my device to get all the above and came to Shaan`s thread describing how to root s advance. And i read about this temp CWM recovery bit and need to partition my drive, etc.
Now my questions are
a) what is this temp CWM and what is the difference between temp CWM and permanent CWM?
b) Can I make a nandroid backup using the temp CWM?? And can i recover my stock rom if i need to get back to it?
c) Do i need to make a partition using this temp CWM? If so can i go back to the state of stock ROM when i want to revert to it?
d) CAn i make two different backup recoveries ? one of stock ROM and second of debloated rom ( i would like to get rid of samsung apps .
e) Where does the nandroid backup / recovery get stored on the phone?? on internal memory or external memory?? ( i have only a 1 gb micro sd card )?
f) after rooting and doing all of the above can i flash cm 11 kitkat rom or i need to get to unrooted status to do that??
Thanks in advance for the answers and sorry for all the noob questions.
Noob to android - no answers for my questions?

To answer of points a - e is here.
To answer the points f: to be rooted, and already installed CWM while. Or if you want to install a permanently CWM when the stock ROM, then you must install a custom kernel After that, you can flash the CM11 or AOSP ROM.

the link provided was really helpful in clearing a lot of things except
a) what exactly is the difference between temp cwm and permanent cwm. Can i make a backup ( make a nandroid backup ) and make a recovery of the same in case i want to revert to it afterwards ?? ( I understand i will need to install the temp cwm again to do so ).
But will it give me a back up to make that recovery ??
And thanks a lot TPD-21

Of course you can make a backup since the first of installing CWM-temporary, until the permanent CWM. So the conclusion is that: CWM installed while in the stock ROM can be made to:
a). Make nandroid backup.
b). Restoring a backup Custom ROM and stock ROM and of course it's also included CWM.
c). As long as your device is rooted, and as long as it also CWM temporary or permanent at the time still in stock ROM can still be alive and doing everything you want.
Hope it helps. ?
