Chrome+Chromecast & Tab Casting is a no go. - Google Chromecast

So I don't know if anyone can point me in the right direction, but I just installed the Chromecast for my parents, have it working on my tablet, phone, brothers MAC with 0 issues, but when I try to cast a tab, the TV screen goes black, for a few seconds, then the Google Cast extension goes red with the x telling my to try to cast again or check network settings.
I'm using a Win 7 OS, latest Chrome, turned the firewall off to test, Anti-Virus, reinstalled the extension, the browser, ran as admin, changed compatibility mode in Chrome properties & still absolutely NOTHING.
My brother added the extension to the MAC, & everything mirrored right away from every tab he sent.
Is there something I need to be looking for as to why this isn't working? I've searched high & low for troubleshooting, but decided someone here may have experienced the same issue. The Chromecast is updated as well. This should have been a simple install the extension in Chrome & go, but is turning out to be a headache.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update/reinstall chrome. Disable every extension, clear browser cache and reboot computer. Good luck & Merry Christmas.

Will try this. The post above yours was already done along with everything else posted earlier I mentioned & didn't work.
Hopefully your solution will work. Pretty odd the MAC just worked. If anything I was expecting that computer to have issues.

What are the specs of the Win 7 computer?
Also, enable the Cast Extension's option to automatically resize the browser tab - that'll reduce the CPU requirement, if it's a CPU speed issue.

OK sorry I thought you were having that problem on all not just the PC....
You say you shut off the firewall but in most cases there are two in Windows...The one that comes with your AntiVirus/Security Suite and Windows Firewall.
If you got both of them off and still nothing....
How is the PC connecting to the router compared to the other devices?
Is the PC wired while the others are Wireless? (I know the Androids are Wireless)
If you have a router that has Guest Access and use that for your PC many ports will be blocked as well.
Also what file are you trying to cast? Can you cast that same file or Tab from the other devices successfully?
What is it your trying to cast and from where?
In the end your probably right it is isolated at the PC side but that also makes it much harder to troubleshoot since we don't know what is running on your PC that could interfere.

So a little more information...
1. I'm just trying to cast a tab in general. Nothing fancy. For instance a site with a recipe. Did the auto resize thing & nothing. The laptop is old, but not old enough to not handle the tab. It also has 8 of RAM.
2. The laptop is connected to wifi. 2.4 GHz.
3. The firewall on Win 7 was off, & nothing is running firewall wise with the anti-virus program.
4. Guest access isn't on.
5. My brothers Mac Book is connected identically to the network as is the Win 7 laptop. Both wirelessly. All he did was launch Chrome, install the extension & off he went. Had facebook up, YouTube, pictures, etc.
6. Tested an iPhone, as well as my Nexus 7 & had no issues getting Pandora to work, YouTube, etc.
I haven't had time to try all of the networking stuff mentioned as I am not over there, but seeing how every other wireless device is working, I don't see it being anything network related aside from a setting on the laptop that is related to Windows somehow. It shouldn't be that complicated.
I hate to return the Chromecast, but I bought it for my parents to use with the laptop. If that can't work, it's pretty much useless.
I will try my laptop which is running Win 7 when I go over there on Saturday, but if that works, the only thing would be a setting. Even if CPU was an issue, which it isn't, I can't see it not mirroring a simple site with text & pictures. Heck, even the Google start page with the word Google.

First thing to check is what setting the network its set to (Unknown, Public, Home, Work) - only the latter two will work as the former two block lots of ports.
After that, try Resetting the Windows Firewall config - I've seen cases where it can interfere with things even when turned off. (Insert WTF)
After that, check for any network filters, like those installed by some combo antivirus/firewall packages, and any VPN filters.
You could also try booting Windows in Safe Mode to see if that makes a difference.

Safe mode works, but that's it. Another laptop was tested running Windows 7 & no issues there. It's also less powerful & older than the one that doesn't work.
It appears to be just the one laptop. I also updated all wireless drivers & that didn't help. The sad thing is, is that the laptop trying to be used was wiped & set up from scratch. So there really isn't a lot of garbage on it. Windows, your general programs & updates & that's it.

Someone mentioned needing to enable the Portable Media device or Wireless Media device (I can remember exact wording) firewall option. Not sure if that's Windows 8 specific or not.

USB tether w/o Root. PDAnet for Android Available now!

Hey everyone, PDAnet is now available for android!
http://junefabrics.com/android/index.php
PdaNet does NOT require root access or hacking your phone's firmware in order to work. It is just a regular Android application that works on all Android phones as-is. Currently this initial version supports USB tethering on the T-Mobile G1 phone. Tethering is secure and will also charge your phone at the same time. Your phone can either connect to 3G data or WiFi.

It works perfectly, and root access is not required.
Enjoy!
Good find! Works best with Opera browser (other browsers such as IE and Firefox, won't display pictures for some reason...) Has some connectivity issues when using longer than 5 minutes (yes, I have enable usb bugging enabled and stay alive while connected via usb) All and all, a good program for your laptop without draining your G1 or when the REAL internet goes out. Good find! Thanks! Also, incredibly simple to use!!!
EXE installer? WTF?! How does it work? Does the program require something on the computer-end too?
I'm Linux user, so I can't use it?
Yes, it seems to be only compatible with windows. Since you're in linux, you may try running it through WINE to see what happens.

Did you experience the pictures not loading problem also while using IE or firefox?
this doesn't really seem to work yet
I was able to install it without much trouble and the initial connection looked promising (well, some pages came up anyway).
It was basically impossible to connect to Speedtest.net however and Speakeasy only rated my connection at 287/283 kbps at best (the G1 was on WiFi). I tested it again with the G1 on 3G and got a 409/330 kbps (doesn't that seem weird that it would rate better on 3G?) but then it seemed to stop connecting somehow and I had to restart the program and reestablish the connection on the PC. After a few more minutes it happened again. I would call this basically not useful at the moment, but I hope they can work the bugs out and get some decent speed out of it.
For reference, using Tether WiFi to connect to the G1 over 3G Speakeasy rated the connection at 699/316 kbps. And in my experience it's stable/consistent.
As a disclaimer, this was on my work laptop which has some pretty hefty encryption software installed. While this may be the problem, I didn't have any trouble connecting initially (multiple times).
Additional:
Their "reviews" section is just "customer testimonials", as my honest yet critical assessment of the app's inability to perform as intended was NOT posted and they didn't even bother to drop me an email to try to sort out the problem. I hope they can improve on the app, but they're quickly losing my respect and interest.
I just got this. I dl it to my sd card, connect phone to pc w usb, ran exe through windows. Installed program automatically onto phone. Windows asks to install driver for g1 and it does the work from there.
It seems to work ok, the first few tries on my desktop it would disconnect after a few minutes, restarted phone and its been better but still only seems to stay connected for about 20 min, which should be ample time to do alittle websurfing without getting mad about disconnects.
well they might not have replied because they are aware of the problem, and they clearly state that this is beta software. if you look at the known issues the first one is about the connection dropping and having to reconnect.
once they work out the bugs this software will be pretty useful because of how easy it is to use.
if only i could plug the g1 into the 360 would save me $100...or if i could share the connection with my windows media desktop(i use it as a media server for my xbox and its not even close to a internet connection).
i tried to connect it but it does the network doesnt have sufficient MTU settings. xbox live requires a minimum MTU setting of 1364.
darn.
ill be watching for updates though, should be useful once fully operational.
i've been using mine for a while now...no problems once i turn off the wifi switch on my laptop...recently when i plug it in tho, it says PDAnet is expiring soon...is this supposed to be a paid app?
This app is gay... It was pretty good at first... but once the guy updated to r1.5... its been acting gay... it would come up with random blockings... it blocked www.google.com... wtf?... and wikipedia... yahoo answers... so I just got root and installed WiFi Tether for Root users... works way better and doesnt have blocks...
USB tether 4.2.6
This is supposed to be plug and play. A lot of people have said it's great. I have not been so fortunate. Anyway, could someone give me directions on how to use this. 1. plug in phone via USB. 2. settings/wireless settings/ internet tether (on). 3. Go to PC and click on G1Tether click connect. For me this does not work. Help.
This application is a fine hold-over for people who are too stupid to get root, but it is a VERY VERY poor imitation of tethering.
1) A real tethering solution will NOT require proprietary crap to be installed on the CLIENT.
2) Wired or Wireless tether for root users *IS* a *TRUE* plug-it-in-and-it-works solution. Run the program on the phone, plug in the wire, and you're done. No weird nonsense to be installed on the computer.

hotspot gives increasingly higher numbers

I am running frf91 and my hotspot is working. Every time I turn on the hotspot function of my phone and connect my computer, my computer sees it remembers the SSID and password but reports a higher number than the time before. For example my SSID shows 'androidap (5)'. Five is the number of times I have turned the feature on my phone and then connected my computer. I don't know if the problem is my phone or computer. I am using a dell latitude 6400 with win7 64bit.
It has something to do with your computer, more specifically - with bloatware that is most probably installed as WiFi control application. Nothing to do with Nexus. SSID doesn't change, otherwise you wouldn't be able to connect to it.
Thanks for your input Jack. My computer is recently formatted and I am only using the windows software to manage my wireless networks. I am not using any third party software. What kind of bloatware were you thinking? I am using Microsoft security essentials for antivirus but otherwise I try to keep things very clean. Maybe it's a driver issue? Any other thoughts?
Usually laptops come preinstalled with management SW from their manufacturer - including WiFi management apps that are bundled with the WiFi driver (Intel, Dell, etc). If you didn't install it and you're using the default Win7 networking - then my answer above isn't applicable.
Any chance of a screenshot showing this number?
Also, you could try changing the SSID, registering the laptop on the new network and checking if you're getting the same number increase as before.

'bleedin Windoze again then !!
I have a Lenovo laptop with a fresh copy of Windows 7 Professional. No other WiFi management software.
I have this same issue. Everytime I WiFi tether, I get a new network connection with an increasingly higher number. It's not the SSID that changes, though. That's always the same. Just the connection name changes.
I prefer to just tether with USB, anyway. That way my phone gets a charge a the same time. I mostly use my WiFi tether for my iPad.
I have Win7 at home, I'll test it later.

Thanks again. I have tried changing the ssid and I am getting the same results. I have found that if I keep tether running on the phone and connect multiple times from the computer, the number doesn't climb. But when I toggle tether on the phone and connect it creates a new, higher number. Of course my mac friend can't reproduce this error with his ipad, all is fine there. I have reproduced this error on two win7 64 machines and an XP profession 32 machine.
The screenshot you requested is attached
I noticed this too even with USB tether. I am fairly certain that this is because your computer counts each connection as a different network because your phone uses dynamic ip addresses and that creates a different default gateway for your hotspot each time it is connected.
Ok, looks like it's creating a new "public network" each time you're connected to tethering.
I couldn't replicate it on XP, since XP doesn't create network profiles for connections.
This is a stock Android issue, right? Not something screwed up in just custom ROMs?
Can someone point me in the direction of the bug report on the Issues tracker? Or isn't there one?
It's because it is in a different IP range all the time.
You're worrying about nothing. It's simply a trivial number, nothing to even concern yourself with.

No it isn't.
It's the MAC addres that changes every time.
Doesn't happen with the sense HTC hot spot or with barnacle.
It's incredible that no one has looked in to this annoying bug.

Wrong. Windows 7 takes 5 minutes to connect to the network when this happens, as opposed to the usual 10 seconds or so.
If it were just the number that had changed, nobody would care.

Setup question - technical query

I have my Chromecast already set up, and am forging ahead with learning and reading tricks on here, but I was curious about the set up process itself.
Think about it - I have an encrypted WiFi, and there's no open WiFi around me... But somehow when I was setting up the device, the program on my laptop knew the code that the device was broadcasting. The device clearly communicated out to the internet BEFORE I set up my WiFi password in the setup program. I'm wondering what the trickery was that managed that, or am I missing something critical in the process here?

Pretty sure the device uses ad-hoc WiFi and/or Bluetooth to perform the initial sync. There is a thread about how your desktop must have a WiFi card in order to set up the chromecast (but Streaming from Chrome over ethernet works after initial setup).

Didn't think about an ad-hoc solution. And the setup program could be set to look for its broadcasts... Nor did I even consider using anything other than my laptop on WiFi to sit RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE TV and play while setting it up.
That sounds plausible, though it felt like wizardry at the time.

I thought the same thing at first, but after setting up my second Chromecast using the Android application, you can see it messing with your WiFi/Bluetooth settings in the status bar when initially searching for Chromecast devices.

Chromecast seen from mobile devices but not laptop

I had a defective Chromecast that finally got replaced. That old one used to be recognized by my laptop and the mobile devices (iPad, Galaxy Note 2). My new one arrived and I performed the setup from my phone vs. from my laptop. Now, I can only see the Chromecast from my mobile devices and NOT from my laptop. Help is worthless, and Google Support is just about as useless... Has anyone experienced this? The only thing I can think of is that the first time, I set up my Chromecast from my laptop and then it was viewable from all devices. This time, I set it up from my mobile device and now it's only viewable from my mobile devices... Any suggestions?

I'll give it a shot and it will likely do the trick, but why should that make any difference? Know what I mean? It's on my network, can be seen by other devices, it shouldn't matter which device set it up as long as it's properly connected to my local network and visible.
I'm having the same problem here.
I live in Austria so no official support right now but anyway...
Chromecast can be set up with Notebook and Android Phone without any problem.
It was always working with Android + google music, youtube and netflix (with dns hack)
It was never working with Notebook and Google Chrome Browser and plugin. Chromecast isn't listed in the Chrome Browser but I can find the device with the windows configuration app. Very strange and clearly a bug and no network problem.
Right now, no support from Google... -_-
PS: hard-reset and reconfigure over notebook is useless. Still not working and I guess and expect it makes no difference to configure over Android or Windows...
PPS: Windows 8.1 was used...

No internet/networking

Virtualization is enabled in BIOS (Dell XPS 13 9350). Not sure where to go from here. Have been searching the web for the past hour.

Also came here for a solution to this. My Host PC has internet access. Thought the Player would use the same automatically but it has no internet access.
Let there be networking in Remix OS player!
Same situation here.
Mine can access the internet connection from the PC but the Remix WiFi settings are non-functional. If its set to WiFi Off, I still can access the PC connection, if its set to WiFi On, I cant see any wifi networks. In either setting I cant see any of the nodes on the local network. Maybe thats how its supposed to be for now...
I've alerted our developers about this and they'll be putting this high in their list of issues to fix. I'll update here when there's relevant news. Thanks!

And yes, the host has internet access.
Any News?
I have Lenovo Z470 i3
same issue
So there is still no solution? searched couple of hours until at least to find this thread, that I'm not alone with that.
Edit: Dell Latitude E6430 with i7.
Notebook has Ethernet access to internet via proxy or WiFi connection. Remix OS Player only has WiFi, turned off, can be turned on, but nothing happens.
Same as others above have internet on host and can use through host but is slow and won't turn on on player.
Same here since the beginning on Lenovo G580. I gave my laptop name cause some dit, but looks like more it's no connection for google play and not a problem with the hardware the player is used on. Most of my downloads were possible from web browser/else solution, but I can only remember few download/install/update with google play, except while on the lock-screen, I can see download and updates happening after launching the player.
Hope theses details may help.
Internet is key feature to your soft.
Same here, 1.0.104 build 2016092703 can't have any internet access. The only network option is WiFi, but it had nothing appeared no matter it was turned on or off.
Is there any FAQ about networking? In case if I missed.

Sorry. But my connexion is now working for any task from within the player, so I'm at least noticing people to re-download/install. I don't know from where the issue comes, nor if there are more than one with the same result, I'm not a dev.
Plus if it's related, I probably don't own the same computer as you do.
Anyway. Internet is working ^^' (there is an update to Remix Wi-Fi app too. This may be the reason ?)
And like AmoraRei says, remember to modify your antivirus/firewall/windows things rules or to create specific ones for RemixOS. People sometimes fail to catch the notifications about connection prevention, or are just in auto mode so sometimes there are programs that may lack full connection possibilities.
