Play Movies - Google Chromecast

Last night I tried playing The Heat from my nexus 5 and nexus 7 via chromecast and both times my devices rebooted and wouldn't start the movie. I'm wondering why this is and if it's a common issue.

Just to cover the bases, make sure related apps are updated. A number of the Chromecast-related apps have had updates in the past week or so.

Can you be more specific here?
Which device rebooted? Chromecast or the nexus?
If it was the Nexus then that probably has nothing to do with the CCast at all...
Possible that you have issues with DRM on your unit that GooglePlay doesn't like...(I'll assume that is not the case and that you can play directly on the Nexus and it only happens when you send to the CCast.)

How do you plan to use it? (with your phone)

How do you plan to divide the usage between your phone and Nexus 7?
First, of all, right now I have 3.7 inch Desire S. Which is why I think the pair of combination will be perfect.
When the Nexus 7 comes, I will put all my ebooks, comics, movies & shows, pictures, and games on it. Web-browsing will also be done on it. I also can put documents for school to read on it. It will become a total media consumption device.
As for my phone? It currently holds all my music, and I use it as my mp3 player wherever I go. Even with the Nexus 7, the phone will be better as an mp3 player because it is smaller, and I can hold it in my hands and pocket easily. Of course the phone will also be used to message, and talk. 3.7inch is perfect for this, as I don't require any media consumption on it.
Whala, I have 2 devices which are perfect for their own use. 7 inch is better for media consumption, and webbrowsing. Phone for communications and music.:good:

I'm planning on doing the same as you. Unless I can't bring my tablet with me, of course. I'd imagine it would be damn good for browsing xda-developers.

I just ordered a galaxy S3 and now this.
plan on making this my reading and gaming device so I dont have to worry about the battery on my S3 dying.
I will use my Galaxy Nexus for phone calls, texting, and navigation like I do now. The Nexus 7 will mainly be for gaming and reading. The Xoom will be for heavy duty stuff...web browsing, productivity, etc. The Nexus 7 will probably never leave my house. Since it's WiFi-only, it really has no use for me away from home since I don't visit very many places with public WiFi.

Not yet sure if I'll be getting this but I'm in dire need of a 7in tablet. (Had a Witstech a81e that I got rid of about a year ago and I've been without one ever since.)
If I do get a Nexus 7 it'll be for book reading, internet browsing, and movie watching.
If it's able to mount flash drives and the like then I'll probably try booting Arch Linux or Backtrack.
If it's about to mount removable storage AND has a better DAC than my Galaxy Nexus then I'll use it for listening to music. I don't have a very large collection but half of it is in flac and I'm slowly buying the albums that I don't own so that I can rip them in flac as well. That puts my collection at just over 25GB as is.
I am actually considering selling my e4gt buying a little POS phone and using this as everything else I'd need I work in a hospital so there is always a wifi connection there and same thing at home. I really looking forward to seeing this in person.

Yeah, I definitely have that option. Problem is, the battery life on the Galaxy Nexus is horrendous enough with LTE on. Don't know if I want to add WiFi hotspot on top of it. hahahaha Of course, I could always turn off LTE while tethering and just go with 3G...except that 3G speeds here in the Durham, NC area are atrocious. I don't think I've ever topped 650kb/s down on a 3G connection. I could tether it to my Xoom, which is much better on battery when LTE is on, but if I'm going to bring my Xoom out with me, why do I need to bring the Nexus 7 too, ya know? haha

Nah, you'd want a 10.1" tablet for HD porn viewing...gotta see all that girl on girl stuff in the most intimate detail possible. LOL
I gonna use this for everything except for calls and texts. Where ever I can't find WiFi, I'll tether.

I'll use my Nexus S for calls, texts and music and the Nexus 7 for everything else.
I'm hoping the 5 month wait endured for the Nexus 7 will be worth it.
Nexus 7:
Reading, games, web browsing, gtalk/skype and email checking at home with the nexus 7
Movies when on the road the Nexus 7.
Teamviewer to check in on the R+D PC test suite.
Developing Android / Labview integration on the Nexus 7 for R+D at work - start to bring tablets into the workplace for product R+D, test and control.
Windows Laptop:
for overnight trips for video and serious stuff (HDMI out too).
Phone (HTC sensation):
MP3, phone calls, IM, email, capture of photos / video on my , wifi tethering to nexus 7.
Unfortunately (youre going to say.. what?!), I have an HTC One X. Yep, lol. I feel like I should just downgrade my phone, but only if there is a viable option out there at around 4 inches. I say unfortunately because my phone is already large, so it wont be a huge upgrade in size
So between my phone and this tablet, phone will handle of course calls, and everything I do outside of my home.
The Nexus 7 will handle when I check email/news/etc after waking up in the morning or before going to bed, media streaming, gaming (it should be easier to play on the larger screen), basically anything at home not involving phone calls. Most importantly, I plan to bring it to university as I'm expecting to have to stay 8-10 hours a day there.
I'm gonna mount the sucker in my car. Tether to my AOKP i777 for extra awesomeness.

Good luck on HBO Go or MAX Go. Those don't work on anything bigger than phones. I find it offensive that it still isn't available on a single Android tablet, regardless of screen size. I know they just released HBO Go (but not MAX Go, wtf??) For Kindle Fire, but it'll probably be months before they would consider allowing it to run on a Nexus 7. I'll stop there but suffice it to say that as an HBO and Cinemax subscriber, it annoys me that the Go experience is available on the iPad but not a single Android tablet.

Nexus 7 case & stylus and initial comments.

I ordered my Nexus 7 (16 GB) on July 30th from the Play Store, right after I got an email saying this version was now available,
It arrived August 2th at the end of the day.
I scrambled to find a case to protect it and read about the Poetic cases here.
I thought about using it naked with just a film to protect the screen, but ended up opting for an inexpensive case instead.
Amazon had this one for $7.95 with two day shipping for Prime customers.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008IEGS4C/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01
At the same time I decided I'd look into purchasing a stylus too.
After a little research I settled on this one.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00495WTTC/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
Of course, wouldn't you know David Pogue would have an article in the NYTimes about the use of the stylus, one day after I ordered this one!
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/02/t...s-state-of-the-art.html?_r=1&ref=personaltech
The case and stylus arrived in the mail today.
Total cost for the16 GB Nexus 7, case and stylus was $306.22.
So far I couldn't be happier.
I love the tablet size and features.
I love the fact that it can fit in my purse or jeans pocket.
I love the fact that it doesn't have a lot of other piece parts to worry about.
Yes, I think it could use a rear facing camera.
That hasn't been the case with my use of other tablets, but the 7 inch size would make a center rear facing camera more practical.
It's less unwieldy than the 10 inch tablets.
That would beg the question of other ports, HDMI and accessory storage and additional cables.
Plenty of room for other versions of 7 inch tablets, but this minimalist version is fine for me.
I do miss Flash support.
There's a lot of content on the web that still uses Flash.
I can't use Amazon's Prime streaming video, though using the xScope Browser I could still get it to work with Ice Cream sandwich.
The microphone app was great with maps.
It took me right to the location with street views too.
There's a lot to learn and I've just touched the surface in 24 hours.
So far so good...onward and upward through the manual I go.
Yes, I recommend this form factor and design!
Thank you too for your recommendations and suggestions in this forum.
you can use flash

When I tried the Flash Plugin using Firefox Beta on an Amazon Prime streaming video, I got no sound.

When I tried the same procedure on a another flash video, however, I had sound.
Any idea why the plugin doesn't produce sound for Amazon streaming video?

I'm not sure I'm downloading the correct Flash Plugin from Four Square because I'm still seeing the same thing happen.
Could you please tell me who did the Plugin you are recommending and how long ago it was produced?
It's hard to see the detail of the available Plugins if you don't know the author and date.
Thanks!

My goof, thanks for pointing that out!

There are several on the 4share.com site.
It's curious that the procedures you recommend work with other Flash content, just not for Amazon Prime streaming video.
Now that Apple has announced their Amazon Prime app, we need one for jelly bean too.
It would be especially useful if someone could dream something up that would work with Chrome.

Does Google like to toke, or is it just a big coincidence?

Has anyone noticed that on every picture of the screen -- Nexus 4, 7, and 10 -- the time is 4:20?
I also noticed this on a screenshot for the control panel on my laptop's Synaptics touchpad settings. Is 4:20 common in screenshots for some other reason?
Ordered mine from T-Mobile today and won't get it until the 22nd. Ordered as an upgrade to my G2. None of the stores in the 250,000 people metropolis had it today.

Alternative to nexus 7

I hate to say it, but im just fed up with my nexus 7 and looking for any other android tablets out there that work. im going to return it and get a refund to use to by a different tablet.
I really liked the nexus 7 and really wish i did not have to switch, but its just one issue after another with the nexus 7, and now my nexus is basically useless because it is always having trouble connecting to wifi. I have searched for a fix and there is no sign of a fix from either google or the community that fixes this issue. And before that issue there was the bluetooth stuttering and the nexus refusing to play nice with other chargers unlike every other android device ive seen. My nexus sometimes even refuses to turn on, and only does after holding the power button down randomly over a period of hours.
So im wondering what other 7 inch tablets are out their (other than the kindle or ipad) that would be a good alternative. Right now im looking at the galaxy tab 2 because it is cheap and has good specs as well
You'll be sorryyyyy

There's a reason those Galaxy Tabs are so cheap. It was never a well reviewed tablet to begin with. It's an old piece of hardware, and you don't even get all the neat little software tweaks of the Note 8. I can't imagine a scenario in which that's a better purchase than the Nexus.

Never had any of these bugs on my either of my N7. Sounds like you got a defective one or you made a poor flashing decision. What rom/kernel are you on?

Well then i need to somehow diagnose the problem.
Is there any log files that android creates which might give a clue to what exactly is going on when it tries to connect to a wifi point? or any console or something similar which will show what is going on?
U might want to try the old classic test, try another router.
Maybe at a friends place, mall or something.,

There is no good alternative for N7, and even if one emerges - it can only be the successor.
Other tablets that MAY be more powerful/have bigger screen/be equipped with better batteries/etc. will only be actual for few months then the vendor will release an updated version or forget about the device completely
I don't understand these complaints... My N7 32GB Wi-Fi has been fantastic and bug free. Honestly, the battery is great, Wi-Fi is great, screen has no issues...
What the heck are you doing to your N7 to break stock performance? It's a great tablet out of the box.

Alright, look here. You have 3 choices:
1) Wait until Google I/O for the Nexus 7 successor announcement
2) Change your kernel/ROM combo
3) Sell your tablet and downgrade to the GT2
Usually WiFi instability is a kernel issue so your problem may lie there. Some other members were saying it ISNA router problem, and it can be, but its unlikely. Good luck with whatever decision you make though.

Yes, but as someone said above that's what the warranty is for...
I was having connection issues with my N7 because I had 2 different wifi routers with the same SSID. This wouldn't have been a problem except that one was an 802.11n and the other was 802.11g. Silly thing kept switching AP's.
By some wild chance is your router a Dlink? My n router is.

Au contraire!
The OP is written in such a way as to imply that the problem is a well-known software defect that "Google isn't fixing". The fact that other N7 users - stock or otherwise - don't experience any similar difficulties should help the OP understand that there could be a whole variety of other factors involved, e.g. hardware defects or an interop problem with other networking gear.
It takes two to tango when it comes to networking, and - despite standards - interop problems between WiFi gear manufactured by different vendors are a dime-a-dozen.
For instance, I've personally experienced interop problems between a different android device and a WiFi router, where that router was successfully being used with a wide variety of other devices. Despite it being "obvious" that the Android device was the source of the trouble, the solution that eventually worked was to update the firmware on the router. What that demonstrates is that it is possible for bugs to exist *between* two devices; it is very difficult to assign blame in those circumstances.
The OP should probably try seeing what his/her result is with a variety of public hotspots (as previously suggested) - if the trouble persists over a large number of different pairings, then either he/she is the unluckiest person in the world, or the particular tablet in question has a problem of some type specific to that unit and not experienced by the user base at large. The only way to logically come to this conclusion is to be aware that plenty of N7 owners do not experience such troubles.
cheers

The screen will split right down the middle top to bottom. Half will be the game or app i am in and other half is home screen...
Its weird it did it on 5.0.1 while watching YouTube. Now on 5.1 it no longer does it on YouTube but does it randomly while playing bejeweled game and a few apps (chase bank,XDA,Facebook).. By pushing power button off and on fixes it... Anyone wish to explain.... This is the only issuing I am having....... Already uninstalled and reinstalled apps.....

It's a common nexus 6 issues, the screen freezes, get the phone replaced,
There is also a workaround of using lean kernel which remedies the problem.
Ultimately, I'd get the phone replaced to have to problem resolved once and for all.

He has the note 4 since then he hasn't had any recurring issues that he had with the bejeweled game . If it acts up again then I will exchange it...
My major issue with exchanging the phone for one problem is I get another phone with a far worse problem unless they give me one that is brand new and not refurbished... I had Samsung Galaxy s3 that had a issue, exchanged it that one had a totally different problem it was refurbished and was given another refurbished and yet again finally I raised a fit and they gave me one brand new out of box.......
