[Q] Rooting at&t Moto X on 4.4 - Moto X Q&A

Hi all I am fairly new to all this and it has proven somewhat of a task to root my Moto X. It is an at&t and I am running 4.4 KitKat. Is there any way that someone can give me a link on how to root my device from scratch or from the very first step necessary. A video would be amazing but I will take what I can get. Cheers.

Here is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538896. Video is included into instructions for preliminary steps (RockMyMoto, MotoWpNoMo) which are to be taken if you are running 4.4.

any ideas of what to do when you do it, and you go to apply 4.4 update and keeps rebooting?

alot of people seem to be having this issue and the only time this happened to me was when i still had a custom recovery installed you have to be completely stock. then follow the guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538896 step by step and dont forget to do step 2 and 3 even thou they are the same command. and you should have no issues.

I have to say this this is absolutely the best guide to get this phone rooted and customised. Got my Bionic on Monday and after a little bit of light reading on these forums I now have a rooted stock system and with Safestrap I have a system that I can mess around with.

I'm curious what happens if I follow this and I'm on .896. I'm already rooted, but nothing like roms, themes or mods have been installed.
Any objection with me making a video tutorial following all these steps?

Is it good to do a factory reset before doing a root? Or any other tips or suggestions before starting?

Pretty sure when you do this it will wipe you phone so factory reset eould be a wasteof time

You shouldn't reset anything before you begin. This method will create a backup of your stock system using SafeStrap. You can always return to your original setup using SafeStrap. Just reverse the toggle setting for Safe system (step 21). The wipe in step 22 is all you'll need.
I'd recommend reading a little about how SafeStrap works if you're feeling uncertain. There's a link to the Safestrap website in the "Credits" section of the OP.

I'm using [H]on3yScr3am: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/10340-tpax-hon3yscr3am/ (Props to MasturMynd).
I'm not sure its technically built for 901, but its working fine for me and looks awesome. Basic steps to installing are 1)Download .zip to SD-card 2)Backup (step 20 in OP) 3)Install .zip in Safestrap (steps 23 and 24 in OP). Wipe shouldn't be necessary for this theme, it is built into the script.
Always backup before you do anything.
Other themes ("Tpax") for Kin3tix are here: http://rootzwiki.com/forum/264-th3oryrom/
When I get some time I'll break this down further and add to OP.

Nope. I use the external sd cuz I have more room there. Just keep it organized.
When it comes to the .901 file, the file reads Blur_Verzion.5.5.893.XT875.Verizon.en.US.zip
The file name makes it look like the one pre .901. Can you confirm the file is correct and just named wrong? With MegaUpload gone, I'm not sure the MediaFire link is correct. I'm looking for another source for .901, but in case I don't find it....

Motorola names their updates based on the filesystem they are REPLACING. So yes, this is correct. I did my homework before I wrote this up, promise
Thank you. I appreciate that. Seemed odd, but was thinking that exact thing. Running a backup with Bootstrap first, then will install this and move on to test out some ROM's.
Has anyone made progress with unlocking the bootloader? I just got the Bionic a few weeks ago. Sure isn't like the Xoom when it comes to customization.
I just wanted to thank you for the excellent guide. I'm now running the ROM w/ the HON3YSCR3AM mod. It's really cool. Apparently there's been some issues between the dev's who made some of this though.
I really hate that there is so little out there for the Bionic. Hoping the bootloader can be unlocked so we can see some real developments come about. I like Moto phone's, but will avoid anything with a locked bootloader in the future.
I followed the steps verbatim. I could have sworn that last night I was on 901 and now it shows me on. 893. Should I run the update again or what should I do? Eclipse is running.
I also am getting the default tether or mobile hotspot notification when I run wifi tether... Is there a fix for this?
I also usually run the application Klink by faveset and since the root it will not recognize my phone when I hook up the usb.
Any ideas.

Just explained in the several post above you but since you missed it. You are on 901 but for some reason when you flash a 901 compatible rom it'll say 893 in phone info. But if you had just did the update and boot up your phone before flashing a rom it would've verified you are actually on 901. Weird I know. I did this this morning cause I was worried too that I wasn't on 901.
Perfect thanks!

[Q] How to Root Verizon Moto X 4.4

I am straight new to the Moto X, I came from the Galaxy S4. I have the ability to have an unlocked bootloader (Dev Edition). How do I gain root access? And from there how do I begin flashing new ROMs, TWRP? Links and/or step by steps would be great! Thanks!

Ah, I didn't realize you wanted the long version. If you follow jcase's instructions from start to finish (including running Use RockMyMoto and MotoWPNoMo) you'll be good to go. First thing you'll need to do is use RSD Lite to downgrade to 4.2.2, from there you can use a bunch of exploits to remove write protection (MotoWPNoMo) and root 4.2.2 (RockMyMoto). Once that's done, you can upgrade to 4.4 and follow jcase's guide (SlapMyMoto) to root your Verizon phone with 4.4.
If you're new to rooting, follow this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2603358
If you've been around the block a few times, you can jump directly to this one:

This thread has bad information. He needs to unlock his bootloader since he has the dev edition, and flash TWRP.
He does not need to revert to 4.2.2, that's only for the people with locked bootloaders.

TWRP:

I can see someone wanting to do that if they had a non-dev edition phone which was unlockable, in order to save the warranty, but unlocking the bootloader just makes sense if you have a dev edition and want to root. It's literally a 5-10 minute process, and very simple to follow.

i agree with you the one thing that i cant stand about the Moto X forum is the important info is not sticky'ed like it should be to help new comers find out how to do things. i know when i first got my moto X 3 months ago i unlocked my bootloader but because i could not find a good guide i did the whole slapmymoto steps to root 4.4.
this is one of the reason's why i try to answer any Q and A i can and why i try to keep my guide as updated as i can i just wish they would sticky it for people to find it easy. but anyway back to adding how to unlock the bootloader to my guide.
While this thread is still active, is there any way to root a verizon phone on 4.4 with a mac? I have seen several guides, and they all mention using windows software.

Moto X OS Updater

Hello everyone,
I am posting here today on the topic of the Moto X OS Updater. I have the VZW Moto X Dev Ed running Rooted Kit Kat 4.4. I do not want the new update and it is asking me everyday if I would like to install. As I am not interested in doing so I would like to remove this. Is there a way to shut down the updater or maybe even remove the apk? If so what is it called or how do I do so?
Thanks in advance!

The main reason people want to get back to 4.2.2 is to root. with the DE you can root with any version because of the unlocked bootloader.

From what others are posting using the unofficial fxz, you can run the 4.4 system with the 4.4.2 bootloader and I would presume the 4.2.2 system, too although I don't see where anyone has specifically tried that. However, if you do run a lower version of the system than the bootloader and accidentally take the 4.4.2 OTA again, you will brick. So you would need to freeze the OTA app to avoid that.

DO NOT DO IT! Just search this forum, downgrading causes bricks, and most likely you will end up with a phone that doesn't work at all.
