Gear custom rom installation issue - Samsung Galaxy Gear

Dear all,
First of all, thank you very much for the efforts made on this forum and thanks f0mey for the fine work and I hope I am not breaking any rules by posting this issue
I have come across an issue while trying to install the custom ROM null_, I have tried two different ones (16 & 17)
the issue is that after rooting and installing the custom null_03_TWRP2.7.tar.md5 file using ODIN, i have uploaded the rom file ("null_ 16.zip" / "null_ 17.zip") using mobilego in the download mode in /sdcard and tried to go to the recovery, it doesnt boot up witht he recovery but it shows: "install system update" and it wipes the device.
I have checked the rooting, supersu requests authorisation to give root access, tried to select the rom in ROM toolbox but can't get it to work, it keeps wiping the device
Am I doing something wrong?
googling around shows that many users are having the same issue, somes of them found that the file was corrupt in the /sdcard/ but mine I uploaded it many times and always same result
can you please help?
Thank you

Hello and happy new year!
I am very sorry as I forgot to mention that I have deleted the recovery-from-boot.p file from the system folder as well but still wiping the device
to be sure, I have rooted the device, went to the download mode, executed ODIN, after the reboot, deleted the recovery from boot file and copied the rom and rebooted to the recovery mode but then it wipes the device
done something wrong?
thank you for your help, much appreciated!

You need to delete the recovery-from-boot.p PRIOR to booting in this OS..
Otherwise it will just reflash the stock recovery..
Easiest way to flash is untick the auto reboot option in ODIN, flash the recovery, reboot DIRECTLY into recovery either with adb commands or by using the hardware key.

Can't boot into recovery!

I just rooted my Nexus 1 Froyo per instructions on theUnlockr.com. I installed ADB first, Then proceded to root. I then flashed a recovery rom: recovery-RA-nexus-v1.7.0.1-cyan.img. This was successful. I then booted phone into recovery mode. Selected recovery and the first couple times I received a black screen with an exclamation point in the middle of a triangle next to green android. I flashed recovery rom once again and this time it allowed me to enter. I made my backup image and even booted into recovery mode againwiped phone clean and restored image. I thought I was golden! Later I tried to boot into recovery mode again and I received same problem as mentioned above. I tried again no luck. I even flashed recovery rom again and It still dose not work. Why could this be happening? I even went through the steps to root phone again (that went well). But still no recovery mode. I even tried another recovery rom: recovery-RA-nexus-v1.7.0.1.img. It did the same thing. Worked one time and then nothing! I need to fix this before I load custom Roms.

I was able to flash recovery via your instructions but phone STILL will not boot into recovery mode. I hold down the volume key and power.....all I get is triangle with droid net to it. Im going to try and Un-root my phone and start from scratch! Thanks for the help!
you are getting the triangle with the droid because the recovery did not flash correctly, try usung rom manager if for nothing else, just to install Amon/clockwork

Did you remove the two scripts like you were told? /system/etc/install-recovery.sh and /system/recovery-from-boot.p

Cool thanks for the advice! I did try Rom Manager and used Amon/Clockwork recovery. After flashing the Recovery Image I booted into recovery from Rom Manger. No problem! BUT.....when I rebooted phone from recovery menu I again went in to Rom Manager and tried to Boot back in to recovery and I got the triangle with the Droid next to it. I pulled battery and started phone again. I flashed Amon/Clockwork recovery again from Rom Mang. and again I was able to successfully boot in to recovery. This pattern goes on and on. It seams that every-time I want to boot into recovery I need to flash Amon/clockwork image. Somewhere phone is not retaining the information. Everything looks to work just fine as long as I Flash before I go into recovery. I'm sure this is not the way it should work. Any ideas?

Khaytsus,
When was I told to remove the two scripts? Where did this come from? Please let me know what they are for and why removing them would help? Also, if I do need to remove these would it be done by using Root File Manager, finding file and selecting delete? Sorry if I sound new to this.....it's because I am! LOL. Thanks for any help you can provide!
Try this.

It's documented in random places, of course the post below also has the same info. I don't know precisely what the two files do, but they apparently try to restore the recovery.
Trust me, it will fix the problem. Remove them, re-flash recovery.

So, I'm not the OP, but I am having trouble deleting the files despite the fact that they are both say "YES" in read and write in properties. I tried to reflash from ROM Manager and I keep getting an error there. Not sure what to do.
BTW, I'm using a Galaxy Nexus. Would love some help as this is all uncharted terrain for me.

If I understand, your problem is that you can't actually flash a custom recovery from ROM Manager ?
Which do you use ?
Are you trying to flash a recovery in recovery mode ?
Please link here files you tried to flash.

I can't flash from ROM Manager. Initially, I didn't want to purchase the download capability. So, first, I used the program tools and flashed from there. I got Clockwork Mod to work, but then when I restarted it and went into "recovery," I got nothing.
Now, I can't flash at all.
The galaxy nexus should have fastboot capabilities, this is the best and safest way to flash your recovery partition
Be sure to use the proper recovery image for your device
If you need help finding it or setting up fastboot let me know

I have only ever found a guide for a temporary flash. I would follow the instructions and then CWM wouldn't stick. =\
So here is the typical steps to follow
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img
And that's it, were you using fastboot to just boot it? Were you doing another method? The more details you give the faster and more accurate your help will be

I used instructions from http://androidforums.com/internatio...root-samsung-galaxy-nexus.html#enter-recovery.
The ROM wouldn't "stick" and then the USB wasn't even recognized by the end of everything.
Start by booting into your bootloader and writing down everything word for word on that screen here. Next boot to recovery and write down what you see there. Even better upload pics of each. Again the more detailed you can be the more help you can get

I tried two different Odin packages I897UCJF6 and I897UCJF1, both give me the same issue.
I think my only option is to use a nandroid backup from a fresh install, can anyone send me a link to one please.
If you did a master clear it deleted everything on your /sdcard volume... so of course it isn't finding an update.zip package there =P
if your recovery is black screen w blue letters, That is samsung recovery.

I can get to samsung recovery, but when I click reinstall packages it fails if there isn't an update.zip file in the /sdcard directory.
I poked around the clockworkmod update.zip and found out it deletes the /cache/recovery/update.zip and installs a modified /sbin/recovery; among other things, but I think those are the files that are most important to me right now, are those files not restored by Odin?
btw I'm new to android but I'm a linux admin and programmer so I have a basic understanding of how this works, now to just dig deeper and find out where it's going wrong.
Odin will wipe everything on your NAND clean, this does not include the /sdcard area (internal Sdcard)
Doing a master clear wipes everything including your internal sd (so if you had already had a clockwork backup it would have gotten wiped as well)
Rom Manager/Clockwork creates a folder on your /sdcard called /sdcard/clockwork, and within that folder all of your images are stored. Clockwork uses and update.zip file to install itself on boot up (through stock recovery)
I'm not entirely sure what answer you're looking for though, so I figured I'd just lay out a few facts in hopes that one of them might help
Thanks for the reply, I know the basics of how clockworkmod/nand work. What I'm trying to do is restore my phone to factory condition, Odin restores everything except the recovery manager, for some reason I'm stuck with the modified recovery that needs an update.zip. Before I made any changes, when my phone was new, if I booted into recovery and selected reinstall packages it would run the default att/samsung recovery program and reinstall default packages(as far as I can remember, please tell me if I'm just imagining this, ive been flashing and reflashing my phone countless times so I could be really confused), thats what I wan't to happen, now it just gives me the error:
e: can't open /sdcard/update.zip.

Just so I understand. You go to recovery and it tries to install an update.zip without you doing anything? This isn't normal.
I'd do another odin and a master clear. That really should do it.

No, he is saying that when he first got the phone it used to reinstall the stock packages when he selected reinstall packages. Now it doesn't and instead just says it can't find update.zip. He just wants to make sure that on a stock recovery it's not supposed to install anything when he selects reinstall packages.
If you did a master clear and have not manually put an update.zip file back into the root of the sdcard, then you will always get that message because the file does not exist. If you ran the 1 click odin and restored the phone, then you are back to stock. No further actions necessary.

Lol Jeez with all the hard issues we get around here it's the simple questions that confuse the crap out of us
Thread moved to Q&A.

Stuck on bootloader unlocked screen.

Hello,
I yesterday got new at&t Atrix hd with android 4.0.4. I updated to newest 4.1.2 (I think). I rooted it with Motochopper. I tried to install CWM with Myth Tool. Didn't work.
Finally I installed CWM with this method.
Install CWM Recovery by Epinter
Read Epinter's RAZR HD CWM Thread
Download the recovery image
On stock rom, navigate to /system/etc and rename install-recovery.sh to install-recovery.sh.bak
Reboot into fastboot -- use "adb reboot bootloader" from Terminal\Command Prompt
Wipe the existing recovery -- "fastboot erase recovery" !
Flash the recovery with "fastboot flash recovery cwmrecovery6028-xt925_20130219-epinter.img"
That's it, CWM is installed.
Click to collapse
Then I installed [ROM] CM 10.2 (Android 4.3) for AtrixHD from zip in CWM. Everything was working great till turned Atrix off.
Then it stuck on "bootloader unlocked" screen. Most of the time I was not able to enter CWM but one time somehow I managed to enter CWM, if I use restart option in CWM after restart android loaded successfully. Tried restart again but I was not able to enter recovery and got stuck again. After messing around with volume/power key somehow android loaded again successfully (without enter recovery).
Now it's working but I'm scared to restart or do anything.
What do you think? What should I do? Is it ROM problem, system or what?
Currently there are no install-recovery.sh (or install-recovery.sh.bak) file. Maybe this could be problem?
I would appreciate any help.
Thanks!

Are you sure the install-recovery.sh file is not installed? Just to make sure, I would install Root Explore to use that to check to make sure.
I don't have root access but I think I should be able to see that file, right?
Do you have root access? You need to install a file manager like Root Explorer so you can easily change the file permissions and rename the file by adding .bak to the end of the file name.
Weird, I don't see it either. I see it in mine though.
No, I don't have root access. I hope it's ROMs issue. CM10.2 doesn't come with root access. There are weird things going on with my phone. I really hope that other ROM will fix that. Thanks for reply.

I also have problems getting straight into recovery sometimes but if I hold vol up+vol down+power I can select recovery from there. as far root on cm 10.2 flash superuser.zip
Can you tell me what key combinations you use for what purpose? I doubt you make a mistake there...

Just bumping this one
I am pretty desperete now
RSD'ed to Mexican retail
Rebooted fine but I get N/A in every device property value in RSD
When I flash CM 10.2 (wiping cache/dalvik/factory reset/format system and wiping caches/factory reset after) It boots fine the first time and gets stuck in Moto log/Unlocked bootloader when I reboot
I know I missing something but WTF am I missing?

[Q] Galaxy Gear wont recover as TWRP

Ok, so I was following this tutorial on how to put a custom ROM onto my Galaxy Gear by The Unlockr.
And this problem has happened to me twice already and Ive went back and double checked all of my steps alot of times on the 3rd try, but it still happened.
The problem is that after I move the custom ROM into the gears SD card and then I put it into recovery mode all it does is say "Installing system update" and then it boots up as a newly reset gear.
What are the actual steps that you are taking to accomplish this...you are rooted I assume did you flash the null twrp recovery with odin

Yes, Ive successfully rooted the gear and flashed the recovery using odin on all times Ive tried it.
Heres what I did:
Enabled USB Debugging on Gear
Installed Samsungs Drivers
Plugged in Gear and let drivers install
Ran Cydia Impactor
Hit start on Impactor
Allowed access on the Gear
Hit start again (This time it finished the process)
Used WonderGo or whatever to put SuperSU on the Gear
Ran SuperSU and accepted the binary update or whatever
Now it is successfully rooted.
I then Downloaded the Recovery from the link in the tutorial. The file name was "null_03_TWRP2.7.tar.md5"
I opened Odin and unchecked the auto reboot box
I clicked AP and selected "null_03_TWRP2.7.tar.md5"
I hit start and it said that it successfully flashed the recovery
I opened WonderGo and under my device I hit files then chose SD card
I clicked add and added the ROM I downloaded from the tutorial, the ROMs file name was "null_21" and it was a ZIP file
Once it was done moving it to the SD card I checked to see it was in the right place, the root of the SD card, it was.
I Unplugged my Gear and put it into the menu that has "continue", "download", and "recovery"
I selected recovery
But instead of it going to TWRP it went to the stock Android System Update screen and then when it was done it rebooted as a new, reset gear
After you flash the recovery the null_03_.. you should boot up right into the recovery if not from there you should figure out what's wrong !!

Yes....When you finish flashing recovery hold down the power button for 3 seconds or so boot Into the 3 options and choose recovery twrp should pop up then ...I usually backup my stock rom first then wipe dalvic cache and factory then flash the custom rom ...profit !!

Yes, thats what im saying, i know it should boot right into TWRP but it doesnt, it just boots as a new Gear. And i cant figure out why.
Sounds like twrp is not sticking. There are lots of posts about this
I think best way to fix is flash stock mk7, then try and install twrp. You may need to stop odin from auto rebooting and may also need to remove a file from the gear (can't remember the name, but have a look around)
boot twrp gear

If you Flash TWRP recovery trough Odin, like it is mentioned in another thread all about flashing, you can install CM13 (which is basically Android 6). You don't have to install SuperSU.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...install-twrp-custom-roms-g800f-t3439853/page1
This explains just how you do it, of course you have to flash files specific for G800H and not for G800F if you have the Snapdragon version.

Thanks for answering. I think I screwed up a little. Installed twrp and rooted then I tried to install CM but it failed. I read that the reason is I got an old version of TWRP. So I wiped all but I still have TWRP and rooted. How can I wipe everything? And start as you indicated me? And where can I find a TWRP updated version because I can't find a compatible with S5 mini in the official website.
So many thanks in advance!

Just go to Androidfilehost.com and search for hennymcc than go into his CM13 directory for S5 Mini and download the TWRP there. You can flash it via Odin. Then you don't have to root. Just install CM13 from the same directory. No need to root at all. If you want to, just flash SuperSU which you can find on Google.
If you want to wipe, you can do that in TWRP under the option wipe -> advanced wipe -> and mark data, cache, dalvik cache and system.
Thanks again! I downloaded the recovery you told me. There's just a part that I don't get well:

Doing that I will erase the old recovery and the root? Because It's weird that recovery autodelete itself. Or how I have to do to delete the old recovery and the root? Or if i flash it with odin the new recovery will replace the old one?
Sorry and thanks in advance!

You don't have to delete it. Just flash the new recovery via Odin and than go into recovery and do the wiping I told you.

Hi Zocker1304 and anyone else who wants to help. I downloaded the twrp from hennymcc from Androidfilehost.com and flashed with odin but now the recovery is broken. I lost the twrp and the original recovery too. When I try to go to recovery I get this message: Could not do normal boot. And goes to odin mode. What should I do? I'd like to delete everything and put it all again from zero.
Thank you in advance!

Go to advanced tab on Odin and activate Nand erase all. I don't know if that will help, but activate that and than flash Stock again. That will erase everything.

I made that and everything seemed right but then I tried to install TWRP from the link you gave me:

If you Flash TWRP recovery trough Odin, like it is mentioned in another thread all about flashing, you can install CM13 (which is basically Android 6). You don't have to install SuperSU.

This explains just how you do it, of course you have to flash files specific for G800H and not for G800F if you have the Snapdragon version.

And first when I tried to go to recovery went to odin mode. And then I restarted my phone and tried again but this time I got the old recovery. So evidently I'm having a problem with TWRP. Whan can I do?

Aaaaaaah you are on Stock right? If you are on Stock:
Flash the TWRP I told you via Odin and right after the flash finished press the buttons to enter recovery. DONT LET IT REBOOT! if it reboots, you have to try again. You have to go into TWRP right after flashing, because otherwise TouchWiz restores the stock recovery. It only does that on the first reboot. Once you were in TWRP, it stays.

I totally did it that way! because that's what the tutorial says. And eventhough it failed. So I don't know what's the problem
Maybe I need root after all and that's why it don't work. I tried a couple of times more and still had the problem

Did you flash stock in between so everything gets erased? With activated NaND erase button? Under the advanced tab in Odin?

Yeah. Did everything. Is TWRP indispensable to have for installing rom? Is there any other recovery?

There are other recoverys but TWRP works fine and is the best recovery in my opinion. And no, you can flash any zipaligned ROM with the recovery.
