Hi guys,
hope I am putting this question in the right area. I basically wanted to ask if it would be possible to root my HTC one, then NOT flash a new ROM, but only flash a new kernel. As I want to remain on stock, but get features like sweep2wake and DoubleTap2Wake; and maybe some features to help assist battery life.
Thanks in advance guys.

Yes it is. Unlock the bootloader, then flash a custom recovery, flash superuser ZIP and a custom kernel through it.
There is threads here how to root
Unlock bootloader first
Then download custom recovery TWRP
flash recovery and then flash kernel.
Easy as that.

hey guys !!
just got a vivid !
it is gsm unlocked from at&t and i'm using it in india !
as i just got it, i am a complete noob at it !
i have flashed atrix, thrill, n900, hd2 , etc so i am not a noob at flashing !
i dont want to s-off my device and want to install all the custom roms without doing it
someone pls guide me !
thanks....
Go to the HTC website and find the latest ICS RUU for AT&T and run it. Unlock your bootloader. Flash a custom recovery (I prefer the WCX one). Then install whichever kernel + ROM. You say you aren't a noob at flashing and such, so I assume you can do that without much hand-holding? If you need more info then follow the guide in my link but only do the steps I just told you above.

I wouldn't even attempt it without knowing the full ins and outs of what your doing. I would read, read, reread all the issues others have had. Then learn what not to do by those people so you don't end up with a brick. After you have read, read, and reread, and understand then you can attempt it. That's what I done and have never had any issue on this phone flashing anything. Please don't jump the gun and try to do this without reading!

That's how I did it...but without posting questions...I'm no expert but I read, searched and reread when migrating from icrap...didn't want to ask questions which have already been answered in other posts...that is what irritates devs...I don't think people mind questions...but at least do your homework first..

also i saw some roms have written ""s-off only"" so as my device is s-on i can't install them right !!

You can flash faux123's if you would like. I use the kernel myself and can say that it's the quickest, most stable, and most battery friendly kernel I've used so far. You could flash those S-off ROM's as well, you would just need to extract the boot.img from the rom .zip and flash it through fastboot.

Use THIS to root. Make sure you are on ICS though so you have the updated HBOOT
If you want a stock Htc sense 3.6 (The one that is offical for our device) I would recommend Wild Childs WCXbuilds.. You can google WCXxperia for his site.
If you are looking for a newer Htc sense I would recommend Homeslices "BoRKeD" Htc sense 4.1 build
Hopefully that can help ya out.
I got my HTC Vivid a few months ago and I upgraded to ICS and I dislike it a lot but I was wondering how to downgrade it easily. I also found a kernal source for GB; will that help? How do I downgrade my phone back to GB?
Unlock bootloader, flash recovery, flash GB ROM zip. That's the fastest and clearest way to do it.
If you found a kernel see above.
If you found kernel source, you will need to compile it. compiling is not hard, setting up a cross platform development tool chain is :/ Specially when you dont back all the way out and build your system kernel for ARM instead of x86 (
Not to hijack your thread, but shouldn't a downgrade to GB most likely be fine with an ICS kernel?
I only think of this as normally a kernel revision or 3 isnt a problem under GNU/linux, but is android/linux different in that regard?
Where would I get the GB ROM file?

what they said above, unless you mean you found a literall source like the code? then you'd have to compile and then flash.

Hey Winston, I have a few questions... I belong to alot of different forums, and I got help with my husky, so to pay him back, I am helping him with his phone. He has an i-9000 on t mobile. It is freezing on him alot. He is stock, and has never modded a phone. Could you help me with which rom, and and kernel is the best gingerbread experience? Can all i-9000 phones use the same roms, and kernels? What is the best way to root? I have had a fascinate, and understand Odin, but most of my phones are HTC. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

hi friends i have captivate for more than 4 years never rooted it or did anything
now i broke my primary phone and it has went for repair which might take around a month
so am planning to use my captivate again
i am on stock 2.3.5 AT&T rom my phone is network unlock
i want to use a rom for daily usage just whatsapps FB viber and few other app
so i am looking for a good rom and planned to install gamerzRom
but am afraid will my network will be relock to AT&T as am in India using it with local provider
other think what i need to do in order to use this rom.. like su and cwm a guide will be helpful
and if my phone get locks to network how can i unlock it network again
- Your phone can't be more than 4 years old. Captivate was announced in June 2010.
- Once unlocked it will stay unlocked after JB upgrade.
- Follow this very clear and easy to understand guide for upgrade procedure.
- Start with CM 10.1, this ROM is the base for almost all JB ROMs for Captivate. You can flash after whatever you want.
- You may need to replace your battery.

About upgrade process just read the guide. It contains all answers to your questions.
The last official ROM for Captivate is GB based Samsung TW, all ICS/JB upgrades are custom ROMs.
[Stock ROMs](OneClicks Master Collection) is the very first sticky thread in Captivate Android Development section.
Please, spend some time to read the information provided on XDA before asking basic questions. Many knowledgeable people sacrificed a lot of there free time to explain everything you need to know about Captivate. Before you run into problems, try to understand the upgrade/downgrade process. And be very careful when playing with images containing bootloaders. Unsuccessful attempt to flash bootloaders will hard brick the phone and this will be the end of all your questions. Good luck!

I don't know what "sense 5 launcher" is, but I can make almost any launcher mimic Sense interface using corresponding themes, icon packs, widgets, etc. - all available for free on Google Play. Note that you will not be able to 100% duplicate Sense interface features unless you buy a HTC phone. All HTC additions to Android OS are proprietary software and not available for download/use on non-HTC devices.
Thank you !

In order to run ICS/JB ROMs you need to have GB bootloaders. In other words, it depends where you start from. If you start from 2.1/2.2, then you need to update the bootloaders. If you start from 2.3.x, then no need to flash bootloaders. This is also explained in the guide. Same thing with stock ROMs. If you never had GB running on your phone and you want to flash KK4, then you need the package with GB bootloaders.
Just a warning
When flashing the bootloaders theres more chance of something to go wrong. I bricked a phone permanently like that.

presently am on GB 2.3.5 I897UCKK4 so i dont need bootloader.. and only by rooting and cwm i can flash any of my desired rom base on GB/ICS/JB
^
Since u r on KK4 u should have the GB Bootloaders. (Unless u see a total pixelated screen when u boot ur phone. If u do, then u don't have the Bls. Otherwise ur good to go.)
And here is a [Utility]KK4 Easy Root by Red_81 that u can gain Root access through and also get the KK4 Corn Kernel that has CWM Recovery so that u can proceed with flashin ur rom of choice.
See post # 4 in the thread linked for a workin download...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26710533&postcount=1
And in my opinion, i would suggest stayin away from flashing ICS Roms, because of the possible encryption unsuccessful bug.

I give up... This question is also covered in details.
Hello XDA Members,
I bought a GS3 I9305 Model 2 Months Ago and I'm new to Android
Here's What I Want
I want a rooting guide for my phone including necessary backups like nandroid, /efs partition, custom recoveries...etc but mainly without flashing Custom Roms (I mean Only To Install root Apps).
But I want also the guide to teach the way to Flash Roms like CyanogenMod JellyBean 4.3.
Google Apps (Gapps) links For My Model and if i will need them if i root.
I am planning also to install ported apps on ROOT only phone without Roms is it possible? and how to do it?
As far as I know some ported apps are flash-able zips and others are being pushed.
I took a look in this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2344125
But it was in general so please don't post asking me to refer to similar threads
One Last Request I also want an identical Custom Rom Of TouchWiz based JB 4.2.2 fo my model that doesn't contain tweaks, and i think it will look similar to this http://s4tips.com/how-to/4-2-2-rom-for-galaxy-s3-brings-some-of-s4-functions-installation-tutorial/
Thanks.. Looking forward for your aid
If you search the forum it's all there. And There's no 4.2.2 Sammy based ROM for the i9305.

Like everyone else, start learning by searching and reading. Youtube is also a great friend. If you're stuck after this it's something else.

Great, I deleted everything.
Ok once more time.
Download and install USB drivers for your device (you will get those with Kies.). (computer)
Download and install Odin. (computer)
Download pre rooted stock Odin package (search for this in development section of this device.). (computer)
Connect the phone with your computer, and flash the package with Odin.
That's it. Like that flash counter stays 0 and you have stock rooted ROM. Just unroot before sending it to warranty service.
