Yes, just open the app and use the media controls.
From what I've found, whatever music player is currently running on your device at the time, the media controls on the Gear will control it,

Can agree with the above, have used MX player, Spotify, Google music and now stock samsung player. All works good.
You can even control YouTube and other video players

This. Can confirm.
Not for me. Just tried it on Google Music and it turned on the stock music player and started playing from the first song in my files.

Same experience here.
It works when the player is actually playing something. If you pause then when you unpause it will use whatever default player you have, but it will work as long as you don't stop playing. Switching songs will work tho

You have to make sure that the player you want to control is the only one active on your device. If you just listened to Google All Access and want to control Poweramp, make sure All Access is closed all the way.

I only use google. Never used any of the other players.
Not anymore
I used to be able to control Google Play Music from the media controller however, after a firmware update at the end of Jan it no longer works. If I try to skip track it opens the Samsung music player and starts playing that. Annoying as this was one of the functions I really wanted, skip tracks whilst walking without having to dig your device out.

Hi All,
I noticed that my froyo stock music player on my captivate does not allow me to continue where I left off whenever I close the application. The stock music player on android 2.1 was able to do this. It gets kind of frustrating to start the song list from the beginning each time I open up the stock music player. Is there another alternative music player that is better than the stock music player? Or is it possible to load the stock music player for 2.1 on froyo?
I hear ya its annoying. Dont know how to fix it but would like to know too

When you open the player there should be a now playing tab. Tap it to get to the last song played.

Na man with the new froyo leak if you pause music and say get a phone call like just happened to me end the call and music player is closed and doesnt pick up on song if reopened(no now playing). Same thing with openi.g apps after pausing music.

Really? When I'm listening to music and get a call it pauses the music. When I hang up it goes right back to playing. I never get the chance to pause before answering the call.
Yeah I'm not sure what the deal is. I got a call earlier it paused it then when I hung up... nothing. And I checked it out again and if I pause it and do something else and come right back its still there. But if I wait and take a minute its gone. Whatever just waiting for official release whenever that is to fix some issues.

I don't see the "Now Playing Tab" on my stock music player. It was there on android 2.1, but after upgrading to Froyo, I do not see that anymore.

That's the exact same problem I'm facing. I'm currently using "mixzing" music player. It's works pretty good. It also allow me to select where my music mp3 folders are located and only play that folder.
I have the Gear and SN3. I want to be jogging and advance the next Pandora song from the Gear if possible...
I downloaded Media Remote
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appshroom.mediaremote
But this just does as the media controller on the device and does not advance Pandora...
Anyone able to do this?

I have not tried it with Pandora, but when I play Google Play Music on my Note 3 and use Media Controller on my Gear it allows me to skip tracks. Also I used Media Controller with Doggcatcher on my Note 3. The trick for me was to load those up on the phone first and then Media Controller seems to use whatever the active app is. Not sure if it would work with Pandora but I'm guessing it would be the same.
I just tried the Pandora app with the Media controller and it works just fine.

Well I did but accidentally and dont know the combination yet how I did it. So if I have Pandora open and then open MC on Gear when I hit forward it opens my default app "Player Pro" and pauses Pandora...
Somehow I end up with PlayPro showing paused in notification area and now Pandora advances... How dont know how I got there...
When listening to music (I've tried several apps) in the car using A2DP and getting turn by turn navigation I have an issue with the muting. It only happens when using bluetooth. The map app mutes the music when needed but I get no sound (directions) for about 3 seconds. I may hear the very end of the directions or not, depends on how long it takes. It seems Google Map knows to mute the music but that is also mutes the map app for a while.
This worked perfectly on my S2. This is a bone stock SM-900A
Ideas?
I have the same issue. Using the stock music player, switch to the Google player and all is good.

Thanks for the reply
Tried that, didn't help me. Nor did PowerAmp or Rocket music players.
ATT update this morning, hopefully that made a difference. I'l re-install the Google Player.
Just realized that with stock music controls that works for play music, doesn't work for Pandora. I can pause music but not change songs. Anyone know of a app that will allow this?
Edit: I'm actually thinking I can't change songs because I'm out of skips. Hopefully that's all it is.

Hi all,
I have not been able to find any way to control the Google Music or any other application from the watch. I was expecting not being able only to launch the music application from it, but also to control the volume or to switch the song.
I have found in Google Play Store applications like this (trial and then allow you to purchase the license):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.barkside.music
If there is no native way to do this, i really cannot understand as i see this one of the most logical applications to use from the watch.
Cheers.
You can play, pause, skip forward and back tracks with the Google Play Music app and Android Wear directly.
When playing music it should automatically display on the watch.
If not, check and make sure you haven't muted the app.
Music Boss works for most players.

I haven't muted the application. The strange thing is that just in the moment i hit the play button from the phone (Sony Xperia Z3 with Android KitKat 4.4.4) the notification for the music appears, but hides immediately. Maybe its an issue from my phone.
Thank you very much for the quick answer .

Thank you, i will try to continue searching the reason why the Google Music default notification disappears immediately, but if not, i may try Music Boss.

I'm trying to determine the benefit of Music Boss. I have used it with the 3 main audio apps I tend to use, all of which notify to my watch (TuneIn Pro, Sirius, and Google Play Music). They are set up in Music Boss as well. So when any of them are playing, I have two different cards - one for the app itself and one for Music Boss. I can't seem to see how Music Boss gives offers anything beyond the separate apps, other than a common interface. Can anyone with more experience using this app tell me what i'm missing? Thanks!
same here, I found that android wear supports quite a few music apps out-of-the-box.
like vanilla music - they havent released a wear-related update afaik, but when I play music with the app it shows up as a card on my phone with play-pause and I can swipe into a next-previous-vol up-vol down screen
Sony Walkman, Google Music and Spotify works on my watch. No need for Music Boss or anything. Phone is Z2.

I finally found the problem. Sony Xperia has a free application called SmartKey:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sonymobile.extras.liveware.extension.smartkey
With this application it is possible to assign extra functions to the button to answer calls in the headphones.
Anyway, this application was interfering with the SmartWatch option to show the controls in the watch graphic interface. Removing it or disabling it solves the problem.
Thank you very much for the help .
