[Q] CM 11 question about updating build.prop file - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Any issues with updating the build.prop file in the latest CM 11 for the KFHD 7? Certain apps do not work since it thinks it is a Kindle Fire HD 7 -- which it is One app is IMDB. If you edit the build.prop to change the below two lines:
from:
ro.product.model=Amazon Kindle Fire HD
ro.product.brand=Amazon
to:
ro.product.model=Nexus 7
ro.product.brand=google
it allows the application to run fine once the tablet is restarted.
Will I run into any issues since I made this change?

You can try downloading Titanium Backup, back up your apps, remover the apps giving you trouble and reinstall them via Titanium Backup. This works a lot on crashing/fc apps.

[Q] some apps not working(google play apps)

I have the kindle fire hd 7", rooted, with google play running and working. however, some apps, such as pair, say they are not compatible with my device. i had the first kindle fire with cm10, and it ran these apps just fine. why wont they appear, and is there a way to fix it? ive tried sideloading, and they download, but dont install.
I would also to know if there's a fix for that. Anyone ? Thanks.

Well, I have a similar problem with my HD 7, and my only clue is that there must be some information bytes that the device is not giving the Google place store application. Because the play store looks at both vendor name and screen density, plus other factors I wouldn't know, something is missing. All I can say is that it could be something really simple, or it could be just the early ness of the ROM.

what i've done
I've found that if I can get the apk file on my device it will still install. All but a couple have worked with no problem. I use my phone to get the apk and then put it on my device
Build.prop is the answer
Simply navigate back to /system/build.prop and change ro.product.model to "GT-I9100", and ro.product.brand to "samsung"
Reboot and all of the market apps should work.

Another workaround could be install the android bazaar market to get the APKs

[Q] Is it possible to reinstall Amazon Silk?

So I rooted my new fire hd and installed chrome, and ended up making the dumb mistake of uninstalling amazon silk thinking I don't want it now. I want to re-install it so that at least when I tap the web icon on the top carousel it wouldn't give me an error saying failed to load web browser. I tried the Kindle Fire First Aide reboot of the device, but I must've done something wrong because when the device loaded up the system files for silk were still missing and I still had root privileges. Thanks so much!
Have you tried to install the silk.apk and elevate it to system/app/?
sent mysteriously through airwaves by my kindle fire
I'm also looking for the silk browser port?
There is an old thread ([PORT] Amazon Kindle Fire "Silk" Browser) abot Silk working on CM7.
I was trying to install new extracted files from latest AmazonOS on CM11 but it's not that simple.
KitKat WebView engine uses chrmium insted of webkit. This may be another hitch.

[Q] How can I sideload an app onto my k fire without a file explorer.

So, I cannot register my Kindle with amazon, therefore I have no access to amazon in order to get a file explorer. Without a file explorer I cannot see/find/open an APK file to install a program.
I was going to use the root here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2096888 , however the kindle I have is version 7.46, and i believe incompatible with that kfirstaide. So, How can I install a file explorer, to my kindle fire hd 7, without a file explorer?
again connecting to amazon via registration is not an option.
Thank you
Use this to root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
From there u can side load the Google play store using kffa I think.

Blacklisted Kindle Fire HD ... Amazon Kindle App says installed but not in apps?

I purchased a Kindle Fire HD off Amazon that said it couldn't be registered to an Amazon account but I didn't care as I wanted to put a custom ROM on it anyway. I had a heck of a time attempting to root it, wound up buying a factory fastboot cable and using the KFHD System.img Restore Tool I now have 7.4.8 rooted on my Kindle Fire HD. I installed the PlayStore seperately (because if I chose option 2 with extra launchers and PlayStore the WiFi wouldn't turn on but it worked with Option 1) and attempted to install the Amazon Kindle app so that I could redownload all my books I had on the original Kindle but it says it is already installed and won't let me install it again. It is not listed in the apps on the Kindle and it doesn't give me the option to uninstall it, just Force Stop and Clear Cache.
How can I get the Amazon Kindle app in the app section or carousel?
It's already installed. Go to the original launcher and click books, and that's the kindle app. If you wanna get the Play Store variant of it, install ES File Explorer, enable Root Explorer (if you've rooted, root if you haven't), go to /system/app and delete it from there. I dont specifically remember the apk name though. Good luck.
