So the built in EQ seems to work lovely when I plug in my headphones on anything like Pandora, YouTube and even notification noises on my phone. However, if I just use the phone speaker the equalizer has no effect at all. Not a single change in sound from Extreme Bass to Vocalizer setting when watching YouTube and Pandora. Does anyone know why it only works via headphones and not over the phone speaker?
Seems to work just fine for me. Having owned an HTC One before this, the external speaker quality is a definite step back. That said, I can notice a difference when I change the equalizer settings, albeit the fact that the audio pauses between settings (when playing on YouTube) makes it harder to tell.

weird
Can you test it on Pandora too? I really can't tell a difference only when headphones are plugged in
I think I can, however like YouTube it is a very subtle difference between even what should be opposite ends of eq. (Extreme bass brilliant treble)
Edit: I noticed the largest difference when using Play Music.

I think Pandora is the only thing that doesn't let the equalizer affect for some reason. It's just weird on headphones it works amazing

Hi,
I've got beautiful Sennheiser Momentum's here and I've got a problem. They make scratchy noises in higher pitches, say slow or silent songs with high voices. This happens with Beats off at the last two volume settings and with Beats On even before that. The same mp3 does not sound scratchy when I play it over my PC with the same headphones plugged in. It's defnitely the phone because the In ears that came with the phone sound equally scratchy at exact the same volumes.
Is there any way to equalize the standard audio settings without having to use another audio player? I am running ARHD 31.6 and tried it with and without PureXAudio, doesn't change anything.
I reset my phone now to make sure the XAudio-stuff isnt flying around, but the problem remains. But I think I found the culprit, the particular song where you can hear it really good simply seems to be too low on volume in the file itself - i can barely endure other songs at that volume, very loud, so I think the song has a low db and the htc just isn't that good when it comes to making songs loud and so it starts to scratch. Is there any way or EQ that can fix that or a normalizer?
I have noticed that my phones speaker was louder and better clarity on first use but after that it went downhill from there. My phone is currently in for repair due to a total speaker failure after the phone got really hot while using a CM 10.2 ROM, do not know if that was the reason but that was the ROM I was using at the time.
Well my best guess is that the built in EQ isn't the best out there and causes screeching in some frequencies. I can't notice anything in most of the songs but there are some which are problematic constantly and they are 320kbps and sound fine on my pc.
Hello,
I am noticing problems in the sound of my Z1, mostly only with its external speaker (I mean, not when using headphones). So I am pretty sure it is not a software problems, or it should be through the headphones too.
I have played some songs to test it well, disabling all the clear audio, normalizations, jingles and bells. Also the eq disabled, xLoud disabled. All the sliders of the eq at min (-10). Then I have put the first slider (400hz) at 0, and moved it between 0 and +10, adding later also the 1khz one.
This way I was able to track the problem. Can you please confirm if you too, with some different songs, can hear from the speaker a somehow distorted cracking sound? You can play also with the volume, normalization and xLoud to make it more evident to your ears.
I also have noticed this problem using some free apps to make music. So I would like to invite you to try it too, with any app you may have to make music, or try the one I used, which is SphereTones. With this app I can clearly notice that the sound is perfect through the headphones, bad through the speaker.
Then I tried an app called Springs (if you search for it you find many and I cannot post link because this is my first post, so, well, it is an app whose name is simply "Springs", with a white icon with black spheres. Developer bérenger recoules, category "music & audio"). With this app the sound is very bad also through the headphones. The developer has got no idea why and the reviews are good so I am curious to discover with you if the problem is in every Z1.
I also have noticed that the quality of all possible audio recordings (audio notes with any note app, also the mini app of the Z1, and also the apps to make loops with your voice) is very bad.
And finally, the phone calls quality is not so good. In this case there is no difference between headphones of speaker, so I have no idea why.
I discovered that in the call settings there is an eq and setting it to smooth is a good idea, also by disabling the speaker voice enhancement the problem is reduced, but not completely. Basically, the sound is somehow buzzing/crackling/scratching.
So.
Do I have a faulty phone?
THANKS
Well mate you skip important part.
If you suspect it's software fault - could you tell us which firmware are you using?
Are you on 4.3 or 4.2.2?
I don't have that problems, I found XZ1 very good, clear and loud (I'm not even using my bluetooth handsfree anymore - in the car - I just flip to speaker and I hear other side loud and clear).
Also, even I'm not that much into music - I'm very satisfied with sound (YouTube or walkman)...

Mine sounds fine too, back on 4.2 and still in 4.3

Ah, right, sorry
So, 4.2.2, because the 4.3 is not yet available in Germany.
All the apps and system, all is updated to last version.
I did a factory reset and also a software repair with the pc companion, but nothing changes (apart the lost of time and some problems while recovering the backup, damn it..).
Ok, faulty phone then?
Did you try with this spheretones app? I am curios because with that app (which well, the only problem is that sometimes it is kind of difficult to create the sphere) the distortion is very clear, while with music it depends on the music, some make it more obvious...
Hi, just got my nexus 6 and noticed that the top speaker is louder than the bottom speaker was just wondering if this was normal also the speakers become distorted on some music but is fine on other.
Wondering what yoir experiance is with the speakers.
My speakers sound perfectly uniform no volume differences between the two. I haven't really experienced any distortion but I suppose it would really depend on what type of music you are playing. In the end these aren't boomspeakers and they are small. But for what they are they still sound pretty good.
yea might have just been the music i was playing because when listening to some youtube videos the speakers seem to sound the same I just recon some of my music isnt proper stereo or something because some things sound uniform some doesnt.
Just restart the phone. This seems to happen to me from time to time.
Hi there!
TL\DR - Stock Nexus 6 Headphone jack produces noise\unclean audio when playing at low volume . A bit annoyed and wonder if i can do something about it.
First poster and a new user of Android in general, and I got myself a Nexus 6 as a first android phone. Love it so far.
Except for one minor issue.
My audio quality with the headphone jack is a bit strange.
It has background static when audio is playing low, or if there is a low audio portion of a song or video the headphones.
My old Iphone 4[yes, I used that crap for four years] had no problems with this.
I've tried a couple different headphones, but they both have the issue.
My main ones are a pair of Shure SE425 inear. So I hear everything crystal clear, including this annoying static.
I have very sensitive ears when it comes to audio and usually listen to music with "one bar" volume, sometimes two when watching something.
Is this a common issue?
My thoughts are that either the WiFi antenna or something similar is interfering, because the jack isn't shielded or something.
Might be some kind of decoding issue?
The phone is untuched with it comes to rooting or installing apps.
It's basically as stock as it can be.
Kind regards.
Despite my tinnitus (not caused by listening to loud events, etc.), I have sensitive ears, as well.
I have a Nexus 6 64GB running stock 5.1.1. My Sennheiser headphones (both portable and heavier monitoring types) don't exhibit this static you described, even at lowest audible level. This is for playing high quality MP3 files using PowerAmp, as a quick test.
What audio source are you using, please?

I have the same issue, after the recent update on 6.0.1
Audio Player used: Google Play Music and Blackplayer
Video Player: MX Player, VLC and Youtube.
The issue is same as the above since the recent update.
I Bought this phone 2 days ago, when I first unboxed it, I tried out the earphones that came with it, i was listening to a static noise so I was ready to throw them in the ''trash'', but when I tried my normal earphones, same issue remained... its really noticable on lower volumes
It happens the same thing on the speaker of the phone, except its super hard to hear it unless you put your ear on the speaker, so its not much of a problem
but using earphones gets really annoying... do i have a faulty phone?
Edit: the static noise is not constant, when there's no sound playing, it stops after like 2 seconds, and then when i play something it comes again
I just checked mine and I don't have that noise ... I have a PRA-LX1....B170, rooted with magisk and Viper4android and the audio modification library modules for magisk, don't know if that has anything to do, although I don't remember having that static noise the first day I bought it either.
Mine had that issue, I was able to minimize it using Viper4android and by using Honor 6x kernel from K-rom v2
I also have this. Although I don't pay much attention to it since I don't hear it when playing music, it is a minor annoyance when pausing music or videos. Is it kernel/firmware related?
I have same problem too (model: PRA-LX2C636B160). I tried stock player and some premium player players such as PowerAmp, JetAudio HD Plus, Neutron but nothing fixed. Looks like common problem.
Same for me.
Seems to be related to the NFC, I turned it off and and so far, no noise again
Also facing this problem.

I have exactly same issue. Its really weird, annoying. When play music, there is no static noise. When I stop music, static noise comes.
