Hello all very long time lurker but am here now for some help. So a few questions and description of what i wish to achieve.
I have a POS iPod touch 4th gen that I have had 2 and half years or something and really want to replace. Also have an Xperia X10 and shortly will have an LG Optimus 2X. The X10 will function for phone duties until the Xperia TX become available in Australia.
Back the the O2X though. Now turning an android phone into a Portable Media Player (PMP) is something I have been wanting to do for a while now. Naturally though this brings up a few things that will not be needed.
For the music front end I will be using Player Pro and Pics and videos will primarily be held and viewed in QuickPic.
The phone will still need to retain wifi and bluetooth capabilities, however I want to fully disable all other forms of connectivity as I will have no need of it and will not be using a sim in the phone as this will be dedicated to music, movies and pics. So does anyone know the best way gor me to go about that?
I will also have a hell of a lot of unused and unwanted apps. I would love to be able to really strip the phone back and free up as much space as possible. Now in the past I have been able to uninstall pre-installed apps from my X10. I am just unsure how to go about it on the O2X. Does anyone know how I would go about completely removing the phone, contacts, calander, stock music, stock gallery and other assorted apps?
I would also need to be using a kernel with the voodoo sound mods for the wolfson DAC. Now I was wondering if there was any recommendations there?
Finally I would also like a recommendation of the most stable ICS based ROM to go with the voodoo kernel. I would like the ROM to also include a modifiable set of notification bar widgets so I can easily turn on and of things like wifi, bluetooth, gps, airaplane mode and adjust brightness. Anyone know of anything that would fit the bill?
Must also come with a working camera app (does not need to has video recording working or panorama just basic camera duties please). Any other suggestions that you may think of feel free to post them.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and hope some of you can help me out here on my project to make an Android PMP out of a great little Android Phone.
Stoner
Note to mods: hope I am posting in the right section, feel free to move it if I am not.
Since connectivity is already built in into the android OS, you can't disable it, but I think keeping your phone in airplane mode all the time should do the trick. Anyway, taking out the sim card already disables all connectivity that involves telecommunications.
If you want to remove system apps, you have to root your phone first. The forum already has so many guides on rooting. Then all you have to do is use any root file manager, go into system/app and delete the apps there. Not everything can be deleted though, some are crucial for the functioning of the phone.
The other way is to download a rom, open the zip and delete everything you don't need that's under system/app and install it. No guarantees that your phone will boot up though, if you happen to hit an app that is crucial for the rom to work. Then you can flash the rom and it's done.
There are many kernels that use voodoo, just find one that fits any rom of your choice.
Finally: ICS roms still have some bugs, seeing that you are going to use it as a PMP, I recommend not upgrading to ICS or later until roms made from LG's sources start popping out. I hear that CM10 (that runs on jellybean) will be released shortly after LG releases their ICS update.
Almost all roms have a camera app, no worries there!
TL;DR Install any rom you'd like that seems to fit the bill. Root your phone, open the particular rom's zip file and remove apps you don't need that are in system/app, flash it to your phone (with recovery mode of course). Flash kernel to your liking.
Looks like LG is no better than Sony when it comes to OS Updates haha
shall look at stock based Rome for now then. Try and find a JB skinned one if possible.
Then play trial and error with what apps I can remove before flashing and which I have to leave and possibly just freeze. New it was something simple but its been a while. I hope I can remove all the basic apps that make it function like a phone otherwise I guess I will make do with freezing and hiding them. Love removing all clutter possible.
Will be waiting to see if CM10 can come along much less buggy than all the CM9 and ICS ROMs that I have looked at. Silly LG hampering the development of ROMs because there isn't an official ICS update to work off and its late 2012 already. Hoping for some good news though with what I have read about SK and them getting ICS.
Hello people.
I recently bought an xperia z1. A very nice phone which works really well, except for a few things. Hence this topic.
I experience good battery life and quite fast loading of apps etc, but i notice that scrolling inside some apps goes stuttery and laggy. Something i didn't expect from a phone with this kinda hardware. Ecspecially phonebook, call log and gmail have problems with this, just like facebook for example.
Now the questions.
Is this a thing that will be fixed in a future firmware release? And if i install a custom rom using a something like doomkernel, will this issue be better?
It really bothers me somehow, and i don't mind unlocking the bootloader to fix this issue. But if i'm not sure that it will fix this stutter and lag, i think it might not be worth it getting problems etc with warranty.
Thanks in advance for answering
Yes, it can be improved. There is not fix on that and no one can said perfectly what is related too. I got some light laggy launcher but i live with that as it do more stuff than the stock one.
So, if you find an application laggy is not the phone, is the application it self which is badly coded and don't working correctly as it should.
I give you an example, I have Virtua Tennis purchased long time ago, V2.0, then updates after updates the game become laggy as hell, what that mean, that mean updates are ment to improve the application but if they are bad coded they will give you laggy issues, I reverted to v2.0.
At the end I don't think a Firmware will solve all this problems but you can be sure, you will get improvements installing Custom Roms or Custom Kernels which are ment to performing your device.
I don't saying it is worth to unlock bootloader, check also the applications which working in background, all the time they are the main reason for laggy phone as they run and eat ram and CPU.
You have to spend time flashing some latest FW and find the most stable combination.

Thanks for the quick answer!
And what you're saying about the background apps eating ram and cpu, i was thinking the same thing. I notice the lag is random, sometimes it goes quite fluent and sometimes its like i'm working with a phone that can't handle the os because of low specs. Really weird. Is there any tool that gives detailed insight into these background apps and stuff?
The main thing bothering me is the phone/phonebook/call log app which is delivered from sony itself. It's just text, and even that makes the scrolling in that app very stuttery. While i get updates for apps like album, and the scrolling inside that app goes smooth as silk. Just like scrolling within chrome (although it sometimes hangs for a very short moment).
And btw. rooting and deodexing without unlocking the bootloader, will that help too? I guess there's tools that make better performance too then. Or is working with unlocked bootloader better?

Yes, there is an application which check what application wake up your phone or running when the phone is in sleep or even when it should be off but is not. At the moment I don't remember that application as I never used that one, but I know there is as it was mentioned many times for the same reason and battery drain.

Root your phone will definitely help in many ways as many Applications to check your system need Root access, and also if you find an system app that cause your issues and uninstalling is necessary then Root is needed too. Deodexing can improve the customization as it meant for it but is not for performance, so is just up to you if you want to do it or not. There is no tool which will improve performance on your phone, my personal opinion they are all junk application, like the kind of System cleaner. Android is not Windows.
Rooting and Deodexing can be done without Unlocking Bootloader. Unlocking Bootloader is for flash Custom Kernels only. You still can flash Custom Roms based on Stock Kernels.
I'm really thinking of doing that right now. Also because of scrolling cache, which i think might be the cause for the issue i'm having trouble with.
Do you know something about it?

Not really but that kind of stuff it can not be done without Root, I guess.
Where did you find the information about it?

I noticed that custom roms like romaur and ihackers included that mod. Then i looked it up on google and found some articles which said that many apps have a bad way of handling that cache. I also don't have any experience with other firmwares than the unrooted 4.4.2. Hence my question.
Now i'm also thinking that sony puts alot of effort into optimizing apps for this purpose with new devices, maybe that's why i hear that the 4.2.2 experiences are much better than the newest 4.4.2. But that can also be a bit negative thinking, since i still got hope that future firmwares will make scrolling through call log/phonebook or gmail better.
Although on my old xperia s i noticed the same. With the 4.1 firmware installed, the facebook app scrolled alot better then the with the updates that came after it. Just like stock browser always been the best scroller. Unlike chrome and firefox for example. On my z1 chrome clearly is the best scroller btw, just hangs sometimes. But then it's on long facebook pages etc. Otherwise its very fluent.
Hey there,
Been running Cyanogen on my HTC for a few weeks now and i'm pretty happy with the move. Just a couple of beginner questions...
Google Now, I had google now running as I wanted (as per standard android, swiping to the right on the home screen). But now I have a screen only showing that there are 3 CyanogenMod updates available. How can I get it back? And it leads to...
... Updates.
What is the best way to get and download updates, i'm only really interested in the "safe" options, not a BEta etc.
Backups:
I downloaded Titanium backup for this (was recommended on here) and tbh I'm a bit confused what the best way is to back up my device in case there are issues etc with any updates.
Any other tips much appreciated!
For the past few weeks there has been some blog posts, user complaints, and activity on various forums about the new Moto G 2014 having trouble with ram and keeping apps open (multitasking). I understand Android is intended through its design to close active apps when RAM memory runs low, however an increasing number of users are saying even basic multitasks (say using Chrome to browse the internet while trying to stream music from Google Play forces crashes or apps to close). The most activity I've found and participated in is on the Motorola Ower's forum.
Can anyone with a new Motorola G 2014 please comment if you are having this problem or not? And if so, please support the effort to get it resolved by contacting Motorola to ask for a remedy.
The defect exists for me. Every time I switch betweens apps, no matter which, the app restarts.
It is really annoying, especially since I had no problems with my old HTC One X (1GB RAM) and a Moto E (1GB RAM) I had for a while, and fewer problems with many of the 512MB RAM phones I tried.
Yes
Yes, the problem exists, and no real solution came. Thinking about sell it... maybe try a Zenfone?
Same with me. Gets very frustrating using the phone. The phone is perfect in every other regard, except multitaking.
Almost forgot:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/help/design-defect-regarding-memory-t2953501
Don't get a huge amount of force closing of apps but when I do it's annoying, the screen redraw when going from an app back to launcher is really starting to grind on my nerves though, seems to be happening every time I head back to the launcher now, tried wiping the cache in the recovery, works for a while and then back to "Normal!".
Hoping that lollipop will sort it out but from what I've read so far it's not looking hopeful, plus the update seems to be on the back burner now for motorola, was talk of the moto g being the first to get 5.0 but now with LG G3 etc. all get the update looking like we've been forgotten.
Have been looking at other phones, as much as I like the moto g 2014 and the fact I use a sim for calls/texts and another for very cheap data, I may be heading back to a more premium single sim phone, have come from a Nexus 5 I find the moto g memory problem very annoying.
No force closing here, listening music with poweramp and surfing with Chrome at he same time is no problem.Till now I never realized an app to force close.
Ram usage is about 60%.
Ive noticed issues. All we need is a rom with init.d support so that we can set minfree settings at boot. I rooted my phone and ive adjusted minfree settings with romtoolbox, ive noticed a major difference.

Care to share some of your settings/tweaks?
Sent from my XT1064 using XDA Free mobile app
Forground Application- 4MB
Visible Application- 8MB
Secondary Server- 16MB
Hidden Application- 32MB
Content Provider- 48MB
Empty Application- 64MB
Or you can use the mild settings.
Babe I'm gonna leave you
I said baby, you know I'm gonna leave you.... sold my Moto G2, tired of the annoying memory bug....
In the last fight against the evil MemBug, I got an almost good result:
No redraws
Background music ok
Better multitasking
But I had to disable all Motorola servies and apps, use Greenify donation and MinFreeManager (Agressive)....
Maybe it was solved, I dont know because I already sold and buy another, no time to find out.
Moto, utter disapoint.
Bye, bye, baby bye bye!
Yes, it exists and it is a very big problem as you can't even listen music while you are browsing internet because the music player gets killed within few seconds after putting it in the background.
Motorola needs to fix thus asap. Its really frustrating. Anyone found any possible solution? I used minfreemanager con aggresive. It helps a bit but it still kills the apps

If Motorola doesn't fix this the solution is a custom rom. Just wait until Lollypop and you will have millions of custom roms fixing this. Nowadays we don't have these custom roms because the cookers are waiting for Lollypop as it is not rewarding to build a rom based on Kit Kat with the new update around the corner.
Turns out i wasnt able to solve the issues i was having. I think its due to lollipop. After a while apps just start crashing and get progressively worse with multitasking. Ive noticed that its not actually changing the minfree values in lollipop. As time goes on the only way to fix my phone is to boot into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik. Otherwise it bootloops...
So im going to revert to 4.4.4 as soon as i can find a valid link to download it........

Yep, i know custom ROM's will fix this problem eventually. The thing is way too many people are afraid to start messing up with the phone because you can brick it. Personally, the first ROM i see for xt1063 i will flash it xD. But to all the people who don't know how to do it, they will have the problem forever, or until Motorola fixes it. I had a Huawei Ascend before this Moto G and with 30 mb free almost all the time it had better multitasking

Yes, I understand what you are saying but when you flash a Custom Recovery is literally impossible to brick your device. And you are right, I have a backup Huawei with 512 mb of RAM and it does not have this sort of problems. Same happens to my Nexus 7 with 1 GB of RAM memory.
EDIT:
We have some news from Motorola regarding this issue. Thanks to the reports done in this thread:

An Android blog posted this:

We're working on a some things to improve your experience. We do not recommend rooting or unlocking your bootloader. Thanks for all the feedback in this thread.

Well I decided to start using Nova Prime Launcher again since I own the full paid app, using the option for Aggressive Desktop the home screen redraw has stopped, press home button from any running app and it now goes straight to the launcher with absolutely no redraw, so at least that's one problem solved. Just as a test I briefly used the now launcher again and the redraw came back almost straight away.
Hello everyone, sorry for my english its not my native language.
I havr been having the same multi tasking problems, fed up about this trying all the solutions i have not been luck.
I decided to flash my phone with a custom rom and to disable lots of motorola services at boot and i cam say after 2 days of use my phone only kills old apps.it is working geat and fast, the only app that works little bad is skype
I installed andro x custom rom
Hope it helps
I don't have this problem so thought I would post some details about my set up and see if helps you. My phone is rooted, mainly so I can use apps like Xposed and Ti backup, and I'm using a custom pINKman kernel , though fairly sure it was fine on the stock kernel.
I have disabled all the apps I don't use, so maybe this is why I don't have the issue you have?
As a test I've been playing streaming music from BBC iPlayer radio in the background, browsing with Dolphin browser with 3 tabs open and switching between them (Google Chrome is disabled), looking through the gallery, reading email, sending sms, using BBC News app, opening Netflix, took a photo, took screenshots, opened the home screen several times and scrolled pages, (Nova launcher), no lag or redrawing. Streaming music continued playing without interruption, except momentarily when a got a new email notification which is how it should be. No apps FC and no noticeable problems.
I've uploaded screenshots of the frozen apps that I don't use or want running. Maybe this will help?
I have followed the ROM page of z3c ever since Lollipop was released. I know Sony said they would roll it out during January but as I experience som ui and hardware problems I thought maybe L would improve that - and for curiosity of course.
Did anyone try this one: cm-12-20141219-UNOFFICIAL-z3c.zip? I can't post the link because I am an 'unexperienced user' so I need to post another 9 posts before I can post external references, so search it on Google.
For the time being I tweaked the phone by unlocking he bootloader, rooted it, installed uk firmware rather than dk, formatted external sd to accomodate for the link2sd app - and moved the unodex apps. With TB I removed the bloat. Xposed gives me lollipop ui buttons.
Now it just do some weird stuff.
Music from different music apps suddenly starts playing. Alarm sometimes not working(fixed with Timely), camera error at startup (fixed with Google camera). In calls ppl tell me the sound is bad (microphone/software flaw?). I heard this from a friend with a z3 - poor microphone quality, general issue?

I dont have any experience about rooting a Xperia device or unlocking the bootloader, but it is known that
1- unlocking bootloader is going to reduce quality in camera
2- that rom, the CM, is a WIP, there are many, many things that dont work with it.
3- to install firmware from other countries, with flashtool, no root is required.
Those are the things I know. I hope another person can come to the rescue. I dont know why are you getting those issues with the stock dk rom.
EDIT: Just realized: wrong forum, this should be in Q&A
