[Q] Wifi never goes off in sleep mode - Moto X Q&A

I have a strange problem. I set the 'Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" to "Only when plugged in" but I see that Wi-Fi stays always on, also during sleep. In addition I noticed that the largest battery consumer is Android OS. Any ideas what's wrong?

Under Wifi Advanced Settings, you probably have the option for "Scanning always available" enabled. This keeps wifi available for location services, and makes it look like it's always on to the power monitor.

No. It is disabled

Your battery usage doesn't look off. Android OS is almost always the biggest battery consumer on mine unless I'm using the phone heavily. wifi is typically 3-4.
I easily get through a day on a single charge. Usually I've got between 20-40% left at night depending on usage.
As for wifi I don't know. Perhaps there is another app keeping it on. I would try turning all location services off and see if that changes anything.
I'm curious why you'd want wifi off. generally it will default to the mobile signal which will use a lot more power. only reason to turn wifi off is if you don't have access to it.

[Q] WiFi Battery Drain

Alright I hate to ask this question, but my searching and reading is not leading anywhere. I recently upgraded to GB (Illuminance with Corn) and I'm loving how fast my phone is. The only problem I notice is how fast my battery drains while on WiFi (Wireless N with WPA2).
Example: I was at my parents house for 2.5 hours, but didn't bother turning wifi on. I only lost a few %. Once I got home, I kicked on the wifi and within an hour I lost 20%. It appears that when wifi is turned on it is almost constantly in use. I checked for rogue apps and data usage and found nothing. The only thing I notice is that every 5 seconds (yes, I actually timed it) it is polling for new networks.
After doing some reading I checked and the build.prop mods are in there (wifi.supplicant_scan_interval).
Any suggestions on where to go next?
Recap of phone config:
Rom: Illuminance 3.01
Kernel: Corn 7.06
Modem: KK4
Yeah...I've noticed that the build.prop tweaks for wifi scanning don't actually seem to change the scanning interval on gingerbread ;/
Try going to, Settings> wireless and networks> wifi settings> menu button> advanced> set wifi sleep policy to "when the screen turns off"
That'll help while it's asleep.

+1
I switched my ROM from Apex to Illuminance to test a theory that this functionality would work as it had in the past on Apex ROMS. For whatever reason kernels/framework were swapped in a newer version of Apex that killed this very helpful functionality. Once I switched to Illuminance and enabled the functionality, it works again and I get 2+ days worth of battery life with moderate usage (rarely a video/music played, but I do a lot of browsing and email usage/fb/twitter usage is high).
It drove me nuts on Apex trying to figure out the issue. I had thought my settings.db files that control the wifi functions had gone corrupt and the dev ignored any requests for assistance.
Glad I made the switch.

That was the first thing I noticed. The ROM defaulted to Always On. I changed that the first day. Unfortunately, I still have the issue. As it stands, I only get one day at most out of my charge. The only thing I let sync is the gmail account. I mostly browse and talk less than 1 hour per day.
I'll try to do a more statistical approach when I get a chance. I'll see about taking readings ever half hour with the wifi on and no other use.
I was under the impression that if the phone downloads data over WiFi it actually uses less battery than if it downloaded data over 3G. When I'm at home, I leave my WiFi on intentionally when my phone is asleep so that my incoming email is more efficient since I have WiFi available.
Am I wrong here? Just curious if I've been mislead all this time.
I don't think you're wrong. That is why I always use wifi at home. I think I found some errant scripts that were running and causing the excess battery drain. I have taken those off.
I'll probably master clear and reload when I'm no longer on call this weekend just to make sure I got everything.

WiFi remains active even after I disabled (battery)

Guys, tonight I decided to switch off mobile data and WiFi when I went to sleep. Now noon, when the battery was almost over I decided to analyze some attention to battery depletion statistics and realized that even turning off the WiFi it continued to appear that spent the whole night on. Also, see that shortly after I slept network operator turned yellow. How to explain? My carrier has the much more stable network overnight just by reduced use and the absence of network overload.
He had the 3g network enabled, less mobile data.
It happens to me too. I guess it's only a visual issue, I dont think wifi is draining battery life.
Due to Wi-Fi scanning always available. Its actually keeping the Wi-Fi on if that option is chosen in Wi-Fi advanced options. Turn that off and you'll see that your Wi-Fi actually shuts off.

[Q] Wifi is off but shown as on

Anyone came across the situation that the system suddenly show wifi is on inside battery page but is actually off and I haven't turn it on manually?
It seems to be on inside the battery page sometime in the midnight but I double checked the wifi page it is off, and I am sure I have turned it off before I went to sleep.
And yes I have checked previous posts and my situation is:
1) as seen from the battery page, wifi use turned to positive some time in the midnight when I haven't touched it, and kept on until I notice it.
2) confirmed unchecked scanning always available, also wifi on during sleep turned to charging only and I was actually not charging last night
3) I habitually turn off wifi by default and only manually turn on wifi. The wifi page also shows the wifi is off
4) the wifi bar on battery page goes away after reboot, without me changing any setting. And I want to know if there is any other way to do it.
5) battery usage seems to drop like wifi is really on, i.e. quicker than when it is off.
So the problem is, how do I know if wifi is really on, when battery page say it is and wifi page say it isn't? And what possibly triggered this irregularity?

I discovered that bug months ago, also related with a high battery drain with Google Play Services.
Sometimes is there, sometimes it's not; haven't found a workaround.
Yes you helped me earlier with the Google play services in another posts. Now I have upgraded to the stock 5.1.1 and basically the google play services now stabilized (in a sense that it drains me battery but not as harsh as before ). So I think my current case may not be related to google play services. I just don't understand why different pages can show different wifi status, particularly when it started during a night time when no one has toggled it.

Wi-Fi constantly on?

I have disabled the scanning for WiFi and even when I have WiFi switched off it doesn't seem to be off. Its constantly on. Any idea what's the issue?
Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk 2
I have this problem too. I'm sure the wifi is off, everywhere else report that it is off, but the battery page say it is on.
I think it's a reporting issue. I sometimes see this. GSam will show Wi-Fi is off, and the Wi-Fi entry in the stock battery stats page will both say Wi-Fi was off based on the time on number it reports.
When you first turn on Google location services, there's a message that pops up that asks if you want Google to use wifi to determine your location. It also says that this means wifi will continue to look for hotspots even when it is off. If you said yes to this, that may explain why wifi still takes up battery when it is off.

Need help in understanding battery drain and (possibly) fixing it

I'm suffering from excessive battery drains on Note 8, Nougat 7.1.1. The battery drain is excessive when on idle mode/when the phone is asleep. I have installed BetterBatteryStats (gave it all permissions) and tested with different settings for a couple days.
My findings:
I strongly believe the issue is with my wifi.
Day 1: I kept wifi on, turned off "adaptive wifi" and "wifi power saving mode" and set "keep wifi on during sleep" to always. Battery drain was very excessive at home. In BBS, wlan_rx_wake and powermanagerservice.wakelocks were very high and phone didn't doze much. When I left home and went to the library and was connected to my school's wifi, the phone dozed, and the two wakelocks mentioned didn't occur any more. In fact, from the screenshot you can see the two flat regions are those when I was at the library, and the downhill regions are when I was home.
Day 2: I kept wifi on, turned on "adaptive wifi" and "wifi power saving mode" and set "keep wifi on during sleep" to never. No change. The results were just like day 1. Excessive wakelocks and battery drain. In fact, funny enough, the wakelocks occurred more often as if "wifi power saving mode" was doing the opposite of what it was supposed to.
Day 3: I turned off wifi completely, and was on cellular the whole time. Battery performance was amazing. Lost 5% over 10 hours, and I actually used the phone during this time. I made calls, surfed the web and texted. Additionally, the are no excessive wakelocks, and the battery plot is nearly flat the whole time.
In conclusion, I am really confused. At home, wifi kills my battery. At school, wifi doesn't do anything weird. It makes me feel like this is more than just some setting on the phone or some bug with Nougat. Maybe some networking issues with my wifi at home? I was hoping I could better understand my situation by getting help here. Any feedback is welcome. I have screenshots from each day so tell me if you think they'll be helpful. Thanks.
Make a factory reset... try that, it makes my stars better.
Could very well be caused by Wifi calling. Try switch off Wi-Fi Calling at home.
I remember having this issue in past with my Note 5 icw bad Cell reception at certain locations.
But wifi calling is always on, regardless of what wifi I'm connected to. It must be something specific to my wifi at home.
