Horrible Wakelock - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have this wakelock called diagnostics.client.wakelock that's destroying my battery. I've searched Google and here to get some more info but couldn't find anything. Anyone know of a fix?

Recently I've heard that wakelock drains battery while I am sleeping. At first I thought it was a Social App or background data running while I was asleep but today I made sure everything similar to that was not running.

My GN3 phone had been doing great with battery usage until this month (use less than 20 percent per day).
To resolve the problem, I rooted my phone and backed up everything and did a factory reset.
I found that my wakelock time was less than one percent until I installed AT&T Visual Voicemail, PayPa,l BofA, and Shazam.
I have since done another reset and installed Google Voice instead. My wake time is still less than one percent now.
--------------------------
After a few days, I am seeing the horrible wakelock again. Ugh.

After no success fixing this wakelock issue and battery drain, I got the NB4 software update OTA today and it looks like the problem is fixed.
--- Not fixed.

I was still having the diagnostics.client.wakelock with NB4, too. I switched to the X-Note 7 ROM and the battery drain problem was gone. During the night, I was seeing 0.2 percent per hour battery drain. That still did not tell what was wrong with NB4.
Just recently, I switched to FireNote as that is closer to AT&T stock MJ5. I started getting the same wakelocks again. Someone in the FireNote thread reported that he never gets that wakelock and that is must be an app. I went back to re-install FireNote and put a few of my testing apps on and found the wakelock again. After removing each one, I found that Active Apps widget was causing the wakelock problem. That widget is not available on X-Note 7. This is one of the first widgets I always install.
I still see occasional diagnostics.client.wakelock but not the hundreds per day as I did before.

New IPC Wakelock

Just started getting this a day ago. All syncs turned off, most Samsung apps frozen, literally nothing extra running in the background and can't get rid of this wake lock. No search results on it either, any idea guys?? Phone went from 100% to 64% overnight from 2am to 8am because of this. Won't stay in deep sleep.

Same here. Just noticed this yesterday. Been searching and have found nothing. BTW, I'm 100% stock (not rooted).
Update 1:
Been playing around with basic settings.
Turned Wifi off : No change (IPC still running)
Turned GPS off : IPC stopped running!!! Still too early to tell, but is your GPS on?
Update 2:
Turned GPS back on : IPC did not restart (phone is now deep sleeping)
Going to turn Wifi back on ......
Update 3:
Wifi back on and IPC did not return. Hmmm, gone for now, but for how long. Still try turning off GPS as that is when it stopped for me (and has not returned even though I have turned GPS back on.) BTW, GPS was not showing as a battery drain while IPC was, it could have been coincidence, just documenting what I've tried.
Problem happened again this morning.
I turned GPS off, problem stopped.
I turned GPS back on and the problem did not return.
Still no root cause, but when it happens, cycling GPS seems to stop it (at least temporarily.)
Glad you found the solution. I finally gave up and just wiped my device because it was draining too fast. Will definitely use your solution in the future if it reappears

My battery life was running perfect, I even bragged about it to friends then all of a sudden a few of days ago, I face the same exact issue. Until now, I can't figure it out. I already did 1 clean wipe (factory reset) and everything seem to be ok for 22 hrs. Then out of nowhere, Wakelock ipc00000024_er.serverthread starts sucking my battery dry all over again. I tried toggling GPS and Wifi but no luck as it's still running in the background. I'm not sure if it's an app causing this or if it could possibly be from turning off a lot of bloatware?
I bet the option circled in my pic was on when you had the problems, right?

Definitely not on or checked and I rarely enable GPS.
I haven't installed any new apps to my phone recently. Only 2 things i've done right before this started happening was 1. unlock my phone 2. turned off and force stopped dozens of ATT bloatware.

Hmm bizarre man. I am not rooted but I have been getting excellent battery life with that box unchecked but with GPS actually on.
Sorry I was of no help.

I am getting this wakelock as well. Happened after I froze some stuff, so I'm going to experiment.
l was getting this wake lock as well and noticed that in battery stats, the GPS was showing as always on despite every location option being turned off.
After reading up a bit, I uninstalled the task killer I was using. I think some program put in for a location hold without specifying a timeout for releasing it. The task killer then abruptly killed it, and the lock was never released.
Everything seems back to normal now after the uninstall and a reboot.
Hope this helps somebody.

After factory resetting my device it went away. Now after two days of not changing any settings it is back
I too continue to randomly suffer from this problem. I'm finding that cycling GPS does not always work (neither does rebooting).
These "Android OS" wakelocks drive me crazy, its not "Android OS." can be uninstalled.
I'm still fairly convinced that it has something to do with Location (GPS). Could be weather, Google Maps, Google Now, ...
And this is back again. Does anyone have this?
Seriously I am not even installing apps from the playstore. After around 3 days it randomly comes back and doesn't stop. it consumes about one percent of battery every 3 minutes according to BBS. Thinking about selling the phone because of this.

Have you had any luck with this?
I just got back from a 1 month trip to Thailand. I took out ATT sim card and popped in a local SIM card by True Mobile with only 3G support. I had zero battery issues and no Wakelock ipc00000024_er.serverthread for 1 whole month. Now that I am back from vacation, popped in ATT sim card, Wakelock ipc00000024_er.serverthread is back in action draining my battery at a rate of almost 10% per hour. (Running stock with most recent ATT OTA update)
I wonder if this issue is directly tied with 3G/4G or SIM card use?

Resurrecting an old thread. I've been getting this ipc wakelock for the past week. Is there anything that helps this? This is really frustrating.

The issue was never resolved. I ended up rooting and installing x-note rom which is currently running flawless. Smooth as silk, no ipc issues and battery life is insanely awesome. With stock battery i'm running 24-29 hrs moderate to heavy use. With my hyperion extended battery i'm running 48+ hours with atleast 10 hrs screen time. No battery drainage or non sense wake locks on X-note rom.
If I were you, i'd ditch the ATT stock rom, it's night and day.
I just started having the exact same ipc00000024_er.serverthread wake lock and I can't find a solution. Newly rooted, so I don't know if that has something to do with it.

There's nothing you can do if you're still running stock. I've tried to solve the problem for months.
Go install a custom rom, X-note 7 is badass. Kiss ipc000024 goodbye!
I was having issues with this wakelock as well. Toggling GPS on/off fixed it for me. Perhaps Ingress was locking the gps position... dunno.
---nevermind, it returns after a while just like the guys above mentioned---

Wakelocks and Massive battery drain!

Hi guys,
After updating from a March nightly to the latest Cyanogenmod nightly I've been experiencing the worst batterylife I have ever had!
I mean, seriously. Charge it up at night, place it by my bed and it's completely dead in the morning!
So it loses 100% battery overnight, with no usage whatsoever
I've tried beanstalk (Also Cyanogenmod based) and experienced the exact same issue. A full wipe and a brand new Cyanogenmod update and it's exactly the same.
I really can't return to stock as I'm making use of a lot of Cyanogenmods features.
The wakelocks are:
As reported by BetterBatteryStats:
Msm_hsic_host
And also a msm_camera wakelock poped up at the top of the list once.
Needless to say "Android OS" tops my battery usage screen with over 90% usage
Is anyone else experiencing the same issues? Anyone know a fix?
I'm basically without a phone right now

I've got the same issue here, but for me it's caused by Google services. At times my battery drains within 4 hours, even if I don't use the phone.
But at some times (most of the times) the phone just acts normal.
Before 4.3 I never had this problem, waiting for 4.4, hope that my problem will be gone. Else I'll just go back to 4.2
Aha! Success!
I have found the issue, I'll post it here if anyone else is having the same issue. Not sure if it'll help you though Dsteppa as your problem seems slightly different to mine
Although I would recommend "freezing" google maps as a starting point. See if that helps! Many android devices suffer from a similar problem, chances of it helping you is about 70%. If you're rooted it's relatively easy to do using apps from the playstore
Msm_hsic_host is used to "mount" the 3g modem as a usb device.. At least that's what I've gathered from various sources. Some phones have a kernel issue which stops the modem from being "unmounted" when data sending/receiving has been completely and thus drains the battery.
Turns out Msm_hsic_host was working as intended. It was actually an app which was apparently steaming data in real time, forcing the 3g modem to remain at full power and preventing the phone from sleeping. The unusual thing is that this app claimed it only consumed less than 3% and didn't even show on Better Battery Stats!
Uninstalling the app instantly solved my battery power issues! So for anyone experiencing similar issues, check for any apps which could be using "realtime" streaming; Such as third party Twitter / Facebook or even Email apps.
Hope this helps!

5.1.1 Battery Drain

Is anyone else having huge issues with battery drain after updating to 5.1.1. I've disabled all the crap, wiped my cache, disabled enhanced LTE. and have minimal apps installed besides stock. Just took the phone off the battery charger. It was at 100% when removed. It's been sitting for 40 min with the screen off. The battery is down to 93% already with 3% being used by Android system, 1% by system UI, and 1% by Android OS. This is nuts. I can't even get through 1/2 a day of regular use. Any ideas?
Big time. My phone isn't going to sleep. My Android System Stay Awake time is more than double my screen on time.
I'm having the same problem. I currently have Location History turned on to get more surveys on Google Opinion Rewards (I could turn that off if I wanted to); and I also know that because I'm not in WiFi during the day, the Lollipop mobile radio active bug keeps the radio awake way longer than it should. It's crazy that I can leave my phone alone during the day and watch it drop ~5% an hour because of the horrible standby behavior.
There is something wrong with your phone or app. I have about 100 apps. No problem here.

Or it's something to do with the AT&T version of the firmware as yours is an international version and not having issues.

Battery drain issue is related to the AT&T 5.1.1 firmware.

I guess it might make sense to stay on 5.0.2 in hopes of a future bootloader unlock and to stay away from a potential battery draining bug. If only AT&T would embrace a more open approach to this model phone. I only got this phone because the nexus was out of stock and I was in need of a new phone. My trusty old S3 was a godsend, with its unlocked bootloader and fully open platform. The fact that AT&T is closing up the ability to root the phone is drastic enough, let alone introducing bugs that make you want to throw the phone at the wall (battery drain).
How can I see what is keeping my phone awake without root? It's staying awake 3/4 of the time and below is a shot of my app usage. What I can tell it's a system issue, but not sure. And yes I factory reset twice and wiped cache.
Same here. factory reset cache wipe x2 and have everything non essential disabled. It's driving me nuts! This phone was a rockstar until this update. Going to best buy tomorrow and will see if the Samsung folks can reinstall the update or something. I'll post what I find out.
Battery life is worse than my old s4. The screen barely takes any of it, when it used to be more than half the battery life on my s4. Yet I still get about the same screen on time.
Yup I completely agree. Left my phone at 53% overnight and I woke up to the phone completely drained and dead. It's ridiculous.
I noticed something odd. On wifi, battery life is great, maybe 1% every 2 hours idle. But without wifi, battery life goes down 10% an hour idle.
Finally made it to the Samsung center at best buy. The guy was able to force the update again and everything went smooth. So far maybe a little better, not sure yet. I'll post when I know for sure if it worked and was a bad update.
So after the forced re-do of the update it wasn't any better. List 20% at night with everything off. Dido another factory reset and cache wipe and that seems like it might have fixed it. Only 4% list last. Not as good as it was but definite improvement. Hope this helps anyone else with same issue.

TurboRZR please update... would love to know if that fixed it before I wipe my S6 for a second time.
I too am having an issue with the new 5.1.1 update where my "Android System" is getting stuck in a stay awake loop draining my battery. Sometimes a simple restart will fix it for a few hours, but it will always come back.
I installed wakelock detector and set it up to run on a non-rooted phone. When I pulled the statistics , the biggest battery drain I had under "Android System" was diagnostic.client.network. Nothing else even came close to the drain this resource was pulling.
This was as far as I was able to get as I have no idea what that is or how to disable it if I even should.
I have resolved the issue on my S6 Edge, I even attempted a factory reset which didn't resolve the issue. I had noticed my Wifi usage in GSAM was very high (50-70%) and after some searches I found that someone else posted in a different forum (I think it was the S6 Active forum) that the issue was related to multicast being enabled on wifi routers. I disabled it on my fios router (it's in a hidden menu) and it resolved my drain. I am now at 12 days uptime without a random drain. I also had to disabled Enhanced LTE as that was causing a HUGE drain at times when I didn't have LTE. I hope this helps.

Battery life

Are you guys seeing a change in battery life on 5.1.1 as oposed to 5.0.2? I am, and I miss my old battery life. It's not bad by any means, but I do notice a difference. Right now, I am using greenify, and package disabler. Is there anything else I can do to get back to 2-3 days usage and over 10 hours sot?
Also, is there any way we can get smart Manager back?
Well I'd start from getting rid of greenify... It's useless on modern phones
Please excuse brevity and typos, written on a mobile device
I've suspected that causing an issue so I Uninstalled it. Any other manager like a smart Manager that we can use?
I get all day battery, and coming from V10
M S6 updated to 5.1.1, and I noticed that Google Play Services is draining my battery very quickly. Have you noticed anything unusual?
When there are updates in the play store, I have noticed that it causes a drain. This is Google play services

After the last update I had the same issue and still not have figured out completely. But I installed a couple apks for play store and Google services. It fixed those but still disappointing battery life.

I have Google Play Store working now! I had to contact Google, they called me within a minute and walked me through a couple steps ( beyond the ones they provide as a troubleshooter) with no luck. the last step before a factory reset was to delete my google account and reinstall it. I am happily updating apps as I am writing this!!
Something definitely happened to the battery life and it must be a google app problem. My battery was fine after the 5.1.1 update few months ago and suddenly a week ago (or two) the battery started draining fast. Also in the morning instead of the usual 3-6% drop I see at least 13% drop.
Do you know a good app which can show me why the drainage?
My friend had a similar problem on his Note 4. His battery went from 100% to 20% in one day with maybe 15min usage. He downloaded app Clean Master and cleaned the system (or what ever that app does). That solved the problem for him,at least so he said.
My battery life is back to normal, after removing my Google account and reinstalling it! I am happy again!
I haven't had a single problem after the update. I'm getting several days out of my battery - but I just use it for calls and texts. Still the best battery life of any phone I've owned...

[IPSECADAPTER] partial wakelock keeping device awake >95%

Does anyone know what is IPSECADAPTER and why is it keeping my phone permanently awake?
Samsung Galaxy S5, Android 6.0.1. Stock ROM, unrooted.
This wakelock occurs often, but not always, after app updates from Google Play are installed. The phone is left on charge overnight and play store auto update is enabled, updates seem to happen overnight. On several occasions when I unplug the phone in the morning this wakelock goes nuts and burns through my battery, but I have no idea what it is or how to stop it. I have to check the battery drain in the morning and restart the phone if this wakelock hits.
I have searched for IPSECADAPTER but found nothing anywhere on XDA or elsewhere. I don't know how I have managed to find an issue that no one else has ever seen! I have only had the phone a couple of months, got it 2nd hand, gave it a factory reset and it installed a bunch of updates when I first got it.
BBS log snippet below.
NlpWakelockAdapter is another culprit that burns though my battery on occasion but that seems to be related to areas of poor signal or similar.
