My phone is rooted but bootloader is unlock able as its a T-Mobile Sony xperia z. Is there anyway that I can use a wifi tether app to take advantage of my unlimited data? I haven't been able to find one with the right settings. Thanks

Do you want to use your mobile phone as an WiFi hotspot ?
Just open settings -> More... -> tethering & portable hotspot (german: Anbindung & mobiler Hotspot)

Yeah I know about that. The only thing is if I use it like that T-Mobile only gives me 2.5 gigs of lte. I wanted to know if there was a way I could take advantage of my unlimited data plan as a wifi hotspot.

Hmmm, think you'll have to talk to T-Mobile support. I thought if you ave LTE flat you also can use it with other devices via WiFi Tethering.

ummmmm the stock rom has this built-in.... I thought.
Settings>Wireless&Network>Tether&portable hotspot
Yeah stock android has tethering built into the OS. Up to 8 devices I believe, or close.
So that won't require me to pay through ATT? Could anyone elaborate?

Yes
yes you don't need to pay the carrier i got t-mo and I use tethering all the time. It works great or download barnacle for creating a wifi hotspot, thats better.

I think this isn't entirely true. The carriers have some control over this, and AT&T recently changed their tethering policy. That might mean you can't tether without the proper account.
The carriers can't control tethering. They can attempt to charge for it, though, using various methods of detecting you tethering.
That's what I'm thinking about; because I bought this phone from someone here and the line is still registered to a Capptivate, how could they know if I'm tethering or not?
I would have increased upload ans download usage but... other than that how could they know?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
That, to me, is a form of control, and what I meant.
I don't know if they do this, but theoretically, it could be built into the system to know when packets are the result of tethering. More likely, is that it is built into the phone software by the carrier, and so the N1 wouldn't be subject to this because the carrier doesn't have control over that.

I see everyone is using the term "tethering" to mean your phone sharing its internet connection via Wi-Fi? I guess the definition has changed -- to me, tethering was always using your phone as a dial-up modem, i.e., using a dial-string to connect to the internet, no? For example, using BT DUN (which is advantages, as you can keep your phone in your pocket and initiate an internet connection right from the computer, although I have yet to see an implementation of this on Android). In this case, carriers can tell. For example, with Rogers, the dial string is *99# so they can tell if you are using data over that versus using data on device via the normal APN.
Yes, I believe the most of the reference for "tethering" is changed from "legacy" reference - it's either USB or WiFi tether, and in both you don't actually use the phone as a modem to establish a connection, but use its own connectivity and share the access to it.

I guess I need to catch up with the times! To me what your describing was internet connection sharing, not tethering... I guess my age is starting to show!
Since I didn't see a thread about this wanted to start it. Has anybody successfully gotten WiFi Hotspot after rooting? Found a thread in the Sprint S5 forums about it here, don't know if we could use this same method.

Install Xposed Framework and download a module named X Tether. It will allow the native wifi tether to function.

Wow. Got my phone yesterday. Got root. Saw this thread today. Got tether. Thanks.

Works like a charm with att unlimited plan. Make sure you restart after installing x tether. THANKS!
So X Tether can provide a mobile Hotspot or is it for "tethering"? If it's for tethering I already use clockworkmod tether for that.
EDIT: Got it working, thanks for all the help everybody. Now I wonder if we can get a Mobile Hotspot indicator in the notifications bar. Guess I need to follow the thread I posted and I'll let you guys know how it goes. Leaving this thread open for now if anybody needs future help with this.

If you want a "cleaner" method that goes through the default Mobile Hotspot, try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2310850. Works for me and I'm on a non-AT&T SIM.
If anybody is interested in the wifi Hotspot toggle in their notifications menu, follow the link I posted.

I'm in the U.S., thinking of ordering the U.S. model to use it on AT&T or T-Mobile. I wonder if it can do Wi-Fi tethering out of the box, or i have to root it first. Thanks
Works fine
No root required , comes with it out of the box

Not sure about the other US carriers, but T-Mobile can tether just fine on my unlimited t-zones plan. T-zones generally does not allow any tethering, and I've never been able to tether on a T-Mobile branded phone without some kind of hack.
I tried it and it works on AT&T.
Hi, can someone please see if FoxFi USB or Wifi tether works on 5.1 update? Or if native wifi tether can be made to work, which I assume it wont since root is needed. Does FoxFi work?

AFAIK, 5.1 has a built-in check to see if you have tethering provisioned on your plan.
Edit: Also, if you have one of the newer data plans, tethering is included, I think.

WiFi tether will not work whether you use the native app or any 3rd party apps like foxfi. I haven't tried USB tether yet, but it worked on kit kat before root was available.

That's what I'm interested in, wether FoxFi USB tether will work on 5.1. I assume Wifi tether wont, unless it's a miracle.

I'm currently doing USB Tether on FoxFi, but WiFi Tether does not work "without a mobile hotspot plan". I just sent this message plus watching YouTube through USB Tether.

Yes, I am on 5.1 and USB tethering is working, now if there's a limit I don't know; I'm unable to test at this current time
EDIT: I should clarify that I am on an Unlimited Data plan, which means I am NOT paying for the Mobile Hotspot. When I started the FoxFi USB Tether, the only thing it asked me was to install the PdaNet+ program and everything worked as expected!
I am looking at getting this phone in a week and was wondering if there is away for unlimited tethering.

one way that i know off is getting Wifi Tether Router, i haven't use it for about 2 or 3 months but when i was using it, work like a charm .
I once saw Legere's comment about T-Mobile is cracking down hardcore tethering users with "non-usual" ways. Not sure what the penalties are but i would be really carefull if I were you.
1. Use a VPN on the tethered device.
2. Use a tethering app, like WiFi Tether Router.
3. Never ever use the built in tethering method if you're on a stock or stock-based ROM.
4. Simple.
Using a VPN hides your data packets and prevents T-Mobile from inspecting your data packets to find out where the data is coming from. It is none of their business in the first place. I suggest doing this no matter what if you care about privacy.
What VPN service do you recommend and how do I go about setting it up.

I don't recommend one. Google it to find a list. Decide which you prefer. Most VPNs will provide an app or instructions on how to set up in Android.
