Hey all just wanted to verify some things and sorting through all the threads is becoming a bear. I cracked my screen the other day and while at work a spark landed directly on the FFC lens. I'm going to be bringing my phone in to best buy for insurance and want to go back to stock.
Currently s-off twrp 2.6.3.0 running beanstalk 4.4.2 1/3/14
My question is the order for returning.
1. Backup SD card to computer
2. Flash stock recovery
3. S-ON
4. run RUU
Thanks for the help!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
1. Backup SD Card.
1.5 S-Off
2. Run RUU. The RUU file will replace your custom recovery with stock. I wouldn't worry about S-off or S-on. They don't see that unless they reboot the phone.
I just had to return mine for a replacement, the ruu I ran said to relock the bootloader before running the ruu, witch I did and it ran fine, so I'm not sure if it will run if you don't.
Also I couldn't get fastboot to work on my windows 8.1, I had to use my old vista laptop.
I didn't soff, I read it was risky.

Thanks for the help guys, so you are saying I shouldn't have to worry about s-off? I did it just in case I wanted to flash a Google edition ROM, never got around to it.
So its
1. Backup SD card
2. Lock bootloader
3 run ruu

You can't update via OTA if you have a custom recovery and rom, you need to go back to stock if you want to do so
I agree with the first reply. Just return it. I completely bricked my first One and took it back to Best Buy. They didn't even turn it on. They just made sure there wasn't a rock in there instead of the phone. LOL
You're good. Just do it. :good:

Gotcha. Can you just flash the stock ROM from here?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2224752
If not there, copy the RUU and run from inside TWRP?

OK so now I have an OTA update available for my HTC One. When I try to update it takes me to my custom Recovery TWRP. Will this help me to obtain stock status? Also what is the next step after booting into TWRP?? Sorry I am a noob to this but I can hold my own with good instructions. TIA!!

I don't believe the OTA update is going to help you at all. Here's what I would do. The factory RUU (ROM Update Utility) that HTC provides is an executable that you run from your Windows PC (XP preferred). You don't have to load it to the phone - your phone just has to be connected.
A couple questions before we begin:
1 - Which phone did you get? DEV 64 - AT&T, Sprint, or T-Mobile?
2 - Do you want to save anything on that phone?
If no to 2, just continue. But if you want to save anything you'll need to use either Titanium Backup or Go Backup & Restore Pro (my favorite). Back up to the cloud or copy your backed up items off your phone if you wish to keep them because you're about to wipe it clean.
You can find the RUU for the DEV unit here - http://www.htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads. You may need to register at htcdev.com to access this page. But here you'll find a list of downloads - some are CRC (kernel source code) and one is RUU (WWE stands for World Wide Edition). Download that to your PC.
Not sure if this is necessary, but I would boot to recovery and wipe data/factory reset my phone. This will erase anything that you have on it. I'd also wipe the cache and davlik.
Next once the RUU is downloaded and you're sure you've backed up EVERYTHING you want to keep, double click on the RUU. It should be cake from there. It'll restore your One back to factory standards and you should be able to send this puppy back.:highfive:

Also, if you bought the unlocked version from HTC like I did then you're fine with having it factory unlocked with an unlocked bootloader. You don't need to re-lock that.
By the way, here's a graphic of the file you'll want to download and run on your computer when you're ready to restore the phone.

Ok, I don't think so. Sorry. The RUU appears to be for the Dev edition only. That was the mistake I made and I completely hosed my previous phone. I see the one that you bought here: http://shopamerica.htc.com/cell-phones/productdetail.htm?prId=41589
Until HTC releases an RUU for that device we can't go that route.
The only other route would be to flash the stock ROM to your phone at the link here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2224752
Follow the instructions. You'll end up adb flashing the stock boot.img and stock recovery back to your phone. Those files are discussed in the first post.
It's a little more work, but this is the kind of stuff that I love staying up late for. Good luck and sorry we couldn't do it with an RUU.
:fingers-crossed:
Let us know how you make out with this.

Hello everybody,
I am considering rooting my htc one, but I have a few questions about returning to stock and rooting before I do.
Edit: When I say I want to return to stock, I want to be able to receive and install ota updates from optus.
1. If I make a nandroid backup straight after I root the phone can this be used to return to stock if I reflash stock recovery or do I have to flash ruu?
2. Is there anything else I need to go back to stock if the above method does not work? Where can I find the optus ruu?
3. When rooting with the all in one toolkit, do I select att htc one or international htc one? I have a HTC One 801s that is locked to Optus in australia.
Thanks in advance, if I do root my htc one, I'll probably only be flashing roms if that matters. My phone is an australian HTC One 801s that is locked to Optus.
Anyone?

1: yes you can
2: to go completely stock, flash stock recovery (to receive OTA) and re-lock boot loader.
3: International (AT&T is US based)

How do I relock my bootloader?

Often you can get faster answers by searching.
Drop to fastboot on the phone and issue this command from your PC:
fastboot oem lock
You don't need to relock to install OTAs.
Sorry about that, I guess I was being a bit lazy. Thanks for all the help you guys gave me.

Well when i instaled the guru reset i had to lock the bootload so i asume it has returned recovery to stock, if not what can u do anyway?
And yes im missing the flashlight, but i didnt notice other missing apps.
Well, the guru is an ruu, i tried with the .exe ruu but didnt work, maybe coz i was an earlier version i think.
Did u put your phone into ruu flashing mode there is a guide on here how to do this. Straight away missing flashlight app will stop the ota.

if you want to get your bootloader to say LOCKED, not relocked, then you will have to go S-Off. otherwise your phone will say RELOCKED at best.
you can check my guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541082

U can try flashing a stock recovery as well.
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.IMG
Extract it from a stock update zip.
I can not see y it is not working. Plenty of them in original development section also guru reset as well.
Do a step by step of what you have done.

I have been waiting for 4.4.2 before I rooted my One. Is there a way to backup everything before I do it? I know unlocking the bootloader wipes the phone, I am just trying to save the hassle of redoing everything if I can. I don't think there was a way to backup a stock ROM last time I did this.
This is my second One. The first was unlocked, rooted, S-off and running ARHD. I had a hardware issue and got the phone replaced via insurance (I bricked the phone trying to go back to stock) and HTC would not fix it because it was unlocked (should have kept my mouth shut!).
I am familiar with the tools to unlock/root my phone as of 4 or 5 months ago. Has anything changed or are there bettor tools/exploits now? I just want to run the stock ROM rooted and have no need for S-off.
Thanks in advance!
Sent from my Nexus 7 FHD using Tapatalk Pro
You can temporarily boot into a recovery rather than flash it and make a backup from there, including your stock recovery. If your unlocking and rooting your one, why do you not want S-Off. It's a get out of jail free card when everything else fails

Hi all. I just had my M7 in bootloader mode and noticed that the OS is blank. I have been trying to run RUUs and flash new firmware with no success. 2 things
your bootloader must be locked (if your s-on)
the firmware must match your phone and must be the same version you have now or newer
Thanks. I am-off. I will check more when I get home tonight.

If your s-off you just need to edit the android_info.txt in the firmware to match your phone
you can flash any firmware without relocking the bootloader
